The Brood - Chapter 7
#7 of The Brood
ENJOY! I hope :)
On the way to Lake Charles to do the shopping that Chloe had mentioned I pulled out my phone and called my mother. I invited her to lunch at my favorite place in town. It was a seafood place that had the best fried catfish. I figured it was about time that I explain what was going on, the truth, and I was nervous as hell.
As Chloe parked the car in the gravel lot I hopped out and breathed in the mid day air. It was refreshing to say the least. I had a lot on my shoulders now and getting to just let it all go for a few hours sounded like heaven. We made our way into the restaurant and stood in line to make our orders. It was no typical place. You had to go up to the front and look at the menu they handed you as you entered and you place your order and wait to be seated. I ordered a big plate of fried catfish and shrimp while Chloe ordered a shrimp po-boy.
Soon we were seated at our table waiting for our order when I spotted my mother making her order. When she was done I waved to her to come sit. When she got to our table I stood and hugged her.
"Oh Tara. I have been worried sick. Are you going to explain to me what has been going on? Oh hello!" The bubbly woman that was my mom spotted Chloe and shook hands with her.
"Chloe this is my mother Brenda Zusak. Mom this is Chloe. Sit down mom and we will explain everything. I don't know all the finer details but that's why I have Chloe here with me." I motioned to Chloe.
My moms face seemed to cloud over with worry. "Is it bad?" She had reached out and grabbed my hand gently as she hung her purse on the back of her chair.
"Mom, it really depends on how you look at it, really. I don't think its bad and I am one hundred percent positive that Chloe here doesn't either." I said as our food arrived. We chatted a moment with the cute girl that delivered the food until she went about her business.
"Tell me before I explode from the suspense." My mothers finely wrinkled face scrunched up in concern. Her long graying hair braided down here side. We didn't look much alike and she always told me how much I took after my dead beat father.
"Alright." I sipped my sweet tea, took a breath and told her everything that happened from that night in the alley up until today, leaving out the whole make out session with Cane of course. Chloe would chime in once in a while to fill in blanks on facts and any question my mother had I could not answer.
I nibbled at my fried fish as she sat there staring at her own food, seemingly processing the information.
"Are you ok?" I touched her shoulder and she jumped. She laughed a little and nervously drank her own drink.
"Yes, yes I am ok. My mind went blank for a second. So you're one of those now. I never thought much about them really. Oh honey, you should have just told me right away instead of making me sit at home causing me clean my whole house twice over." She patted my hand as I slumped into my chair a bit. My relief evident.
"I thought something was different honey. All your tattoos are gone! I never liked those things anyway!" She laughed and so did Chloe while I glared at her and pouted a bit.
The rest of our lunch went by smoothly. We ate, chatted, laughed and overall had a good time. At the end of our meal my mother had to leave to go back to work. He hugged, she cried a little, and said see ya later.
Getting back into the car I let out a deep breath.
"Well that went rather well! Didn't it?" Chloe asked as she started the car and drove us out of the lot.
"A lot better than I could have ever hoped for. Man, I thought she would go into shock there for a minute there." I fanned myself. The car was like an oven but the AC would kick in any moment.
"Yeah, me too." She laughed.
*****
We drove to a few stores and picked up some things I needed. We even set up an appointment for someone to come by and install blackout curtains for my room. I even picked out my own set of towels and other bathroom accessories. We also had way to much fun in a book store. Soon we had to much in the car and were forced to head home. I liked that...Home.
Pulling into the drive to the house I jumped out and grabbed an armful of bags. I felt weird having had spent so much money but Chloe had insisted and wouldn't take no for an answer. I had to admit a day like this is one I had been dreaming about my entire life. My mother and I had never had very good luck in our lives. She managed at a grocery store and I spent most of my time just trying to make rent with my art sales. That was not to say that my art was not good, it was, it was just hard to find buyers for my style of work.
Upon entering the foyer we were greeted by Gavin.
"I see the ladies have been shopping." He chuckles. His tall dark form hugs Chloe and then offers me one. I take it gladly. I am not able to wipe the grin off my face. This man was already becoming very dear to me for he was the first person there when awoke that day.
"I tried to stop her." I smirked at Chloe and she shrugged as he led us to the Den.
"Well Chloe told me in a text that you wanted to talk to me about the finances?" He asked as the three of us sat ont he massive couch that faced the gorgeous view of the back property, porch, pool and all.
I sat my bags aside and heard Josh coming in with Donny. Their arms full of the stuff we had bought. I felt a twinge of guilt but mostly humour. I watched them for a moment struggle with the bags n boxes to set them off to the side. They seemed to be sharing a joke and laughing. I smiled and turned to Gavin.
"As I told Chloe, and as you can see, I am no good with money." I waved my hand in the direction of the bags I had set down. "She mentioned something about an Allotment? Is that going to be like an Allowance?" I scrunched up my face in thought for a moment.
He nodded and after a moment or two of thought he nodded. "Yes. Well. We all have jobs that either coincide with the investments that we manage or here at the house. So it is only fair that we all have a certain amount we get. You however have the biggest job just being you."
I gazed out at the property through the expansive windows and pondered that a moment. The sun was setting. We had been gone all day.
"Will I ever feel at ease with all of this?" I asked myself more than the others as I rubbed my temples.
"The full moon is tonight. After that. I am sure things will fall into place for you My Lady." Chloe reached over and squeezed my hand.
I nodded then heard footsteps behind us. I turned to see Donny and Josh standing there. I smiled warmly at them. "Hi guys." I said almost meekly. What the heck...
"I think I am going to sue for this back injury I just got from bring all that stuff in." Donny faked a limp and made a face of false pain. I rolled my eyes at him.
"Very funny." I grumbled as Josh came closer.
"I do believe I will go cook dinner now. Any special requests?" His question directed at me. I thought about that for a moment and snapped my fingers.
"What about Tacos!" I exclaimed. They all started laughing and I crossed my arms indignantly.
"Sounds great my lady." He touched my shoulder and I smiled at him.
*****
All of us but Donny sat at the table in the dining room a little while later talking while Josh was preparing the delicious smelling tacos. I was beginning to wonder where he was. So I thought I'd ask.
"Anyone seen Donny?" I blinked around. I was beginning to feel a slight tingling in my feet but I just ignored it.
Gavin coughed and looked at Chloe and seemed to visual urge her to say something. She sighed and turned to me from my right. "I think you'll just have to wait and see." Was all she said as she fiddled with her hot tea bag, dunking it over and over.
"That sounds very cryptic Chloe. I don't like it." I grumbled at her. Sipping my chocolate milk I turned to a sound at the arched entryway. In came Donny with his hand behind his back. I blinked at him.
Coming right up to me he got to his knees with his head down. "What...Are you doing?" I saw that his ears were red in embarrassment but his shoulders were tight with determination. I liked those shoulders...a lot.
"I am doing something that I can't help but do. Tonight will be your first shifting and you will choose a mate if not more. I hope to be one of them." He pulled out from behind his back what looked like a bracelet only larger and made of leather. It was finely crafted, braided, with blue beads throughout it. Also in his hand was a single long stemmed white rose.
I blinked a few moments. Unable to speak, what was I to say, I was railroaded. I knew that this was what would happen but that did not mean I was ready for it.
"Oh." I made a little O with my mouth and tenderly took the rose and the bracelet like thing.
Chloe spoke up. Smiling wide as if with pride. "It's totally normal Tara. You will know whether or not you choose him. When you shift tonight you will know. He will not take offense if he is not chosen. He is simply making his interest known. That bit of leather there is an armband. When and if you choose him it is customary for the duration of your relationship to wear it." Her voice so soothing I had to believe her. Though I could not help the blood rushing to my face and ears. Not to mention in lower areas of my anatomy.
I turned to Donny and took his chin gently in my fingers and lifted his head so that I could see his eyes. I searched them for the truth. "Is that what's going on here?" He nodded a little as my grip was not tight. "Then I accept your band in the event that I do choose you."
He smiled a little smile and I could see his muscular chest, through a tight black tee, let out a breath he was holding. I gently touched his cheek and he got up and took his place at the table to my left. Josh came out with a large platter of tacos and we all dug in.
Soon we were all sated and talking of the days activities when I began to noice my fingers were tingling now too. I stared at them around my cup of tea. I had gone quite as I focused on the odd sensation. When Donny noticed that he stood up. "I think it's time." Then everyone got quiet.
"What?" I blinked at them as I set my cup down and shoved my hands in my lap.
"Your hands are tingling aren't they?" Gavin this time. His face peaceful. As a matter of fact they all seemed pretty peaceful if not a little excited.
"A little." I said when I noticed they were all standing I blinked at them. "Okay. A lot. My feet have been tingling too."
"Then we should go outside. The first shift can get a little messy." Josh said as he stood and came over to me. "Come on."
I nodded. I think I was a bit zoned out because before I knew it we were out past the pool outside. I could see the moon beginning to crest above the treeline. It was large and orange.
"Oh my, an Orange moon on your first shift. This should be interesting." Gavin noted.
"Could one of you show me your shift? I'm a little nervous." I squeaked and felt Donny's arm come around my shoulders and squeeze for a moment.
"I'll do it" He said and kissed the top of my head.
He walked a few feet away and crouched down. I didn't know what I expected because I never once seen a shifter do their thing. After a few moments I saw him squeezing his eyes shut and suddenly he kind of roared. It was a strange sound to hear coming from a grown man. Then there he was standing, no, towering over me. I stared at him. His fur was almost completely white. He had black from his chest up though. Behind he a wickedly long pink tail swished. I was in awe of this creature before me. I looked up into his rodent face and saw his sapphire blue eyes smiling at me. "Feel better about the shift now?"
His voice was a few octaves deeper than in his human form and his rodent nose twitching. Amazingly long whiskers vibrated as he stepped closer to me.
"Where...Where are your clothes?" I squeaked. They all chuckled of course.
"No one knows where our clothes go when we shift. Younger shifters have to strip but us older ones have no need." Gavin chimed in.
I suddenly went red when the thought occurred to me that he was nude under that fur. I did my best not to look down.
To my right I heard grunting. I saw a little ways away Josh had already shifted. He was a creamy tan colored wererat. His eyes were a bit more icey blue than in human form. He walked over to us and stood near Donny. Not quite as tall or built but just as impressive.
The tingling had spread over most of my upper body now and my lips felt like I was kissing a battery.
"How do I do this?" I whimpered as I began to slump to the perfect emerald green grass.
"Just let it happen. Embrace and it will just happen. Chloe and I will wait until you're done. We would rub your back to help comfort you but that would only cause discomfort than do any good." Gavin explained as he came to my side and crouched to look into my panicked face.
They went silent then and I closed my eyes and forced myself to breathe. A moment passed and nothing happened except the spreading static electricity across my body. Opening my eyes I looked to the large moon for guidance. I wasn't sure why but that helped because it happened.
One moment I was slumped on the grass the next I was in a crouch. I felt as if my body was painlessly being ripped apart. I heard myself make a sound very similar to what Donny had done only much louder. My hands went out to brace my fall and I stared at two very large pink hands tipped with very sharp looking claw like fingernails. Looking further up my arms my fur was a deep grey, almost blue in the light of the now silvering moon.
I slowly got to my knees and stood. Stumbling a bit I felt a strong arm come around me to steady me. I looked at Donny's black furred rodent face and felt something like a smile come across my muzzle. He seemed to be smiling back.
"You're beautiful." Was all he could say as he nuzzled my cheek. At least I think I had a cheek.
Something blurred my vision and I batted at it only to see my fingers get tangled in amazingly long blue hair. "Blue hair?" I squeaked. My voice a huskier tone but still mine. That blue hair strait, silky smooth, and went all the way to the ground. I blinked at it.
I heard Chloe make a sound and I looked at her. She had her hands over her mouth, tears streaming down her human face. "He is right. You are the most beautiful Queen I have ever seen!"
I then saw all of them, except Donny, come and kneel before me. I felt a sense of pride swell in my chest. Not because of any vanity I had, which I didn't, but somewhere inside of me it all felt right. As Gavin and Chloe Knelt they shifted. Gavin was a solid midnight black coloration, eyes just as deeply black. His frame dwarfed Donny's a bit. Chloe was similar to Donny only with large patches of black here and there. She was about the same size as Josh.
A moment later they were all standing around me.
In my chest I knew they were mine and I was theirs and I wanted to explore my new body but something else was starting to make itself known inside me. I need I couldn't quite place until Donny let me go and stood directly in front of me. He was only a little taller than my new frame.
"Do you feel anything when you see me now?" He asked. Deep voice vibrating through me.
"You mean anything more than I already felt when I looked at you before?" I said tilting my head. Cascading my new azure locks to the side.
His rodent esq eyes seemed to go a bit wide as he stood there. "Really?" He asked.
I nodded and then did something I could not control I reached up and grabbed him roughly by the scruff of his neck and pulled him down onto his knees. He made no attempt to protest only dropped to the ground. There he wrapped his arms around my waist and nuzzled my paler colored belly. Right then I felt something between us connect as I ran my nails through his fur and caressed his large rodent ears. His muzzle rubbing up against my chest now. My small breast covered in fine fur of a paler gray. My nipples just barely peeking through. I knew I should be embarrassed, I tried to be, but I couldn't muster up the feelings I should be having. Only a deep sense of purpose. I knew right then and there that I was their Queen. I knew they were mine and I would never let them come to any harm if I could help it.
I looked up from gazing at Donny still wrapped around me, nuzzling my chest, and saw Chloe chasing Donny and Gavin relaxing on the grass watching the moon. I smiled wide and gasped when I felt something hot and wet across my right nipple. Looking down at Donny sheepishly eyeing me. "Sorry?" He faked the apology and I laughed a deep throaty purring sound.
"I chose you didn't I?" I asked. He nodded.
That night we played, chased and rough housed with each other. Gavin just sat and watched, occasionally letting me tackle him and gently bite his neck. All he did was chuckle and let me. When we had gotten all our energy out we all laid out in the moonlight near each other and talked. Donny and I curled around each other. Fleeting thoughts of Cane came and went. I did not want that to spoil the night, not that I dreaded seeing him, I just wanted to only think of this night. Soon my eyes drooped shut and I fell fast asleep. Visions of all of us romping in the moonlight danced in dreams, not a care in the world.
