Background Information 2: The Aniverse
By Gideon Kalve Jarvis
The second of the Big Three of the Selected Universe (hitherto SU) politics and diplomacy, the Aniverse is a loose collection of more-or-less allied star systems whose principle inhabitants have an almost overwhelming resemblance to anthropomorphic Earth animals. Located to the Galactic Left of the Sol Imperium, the Aniverse produces vast amounts of raw materials as well as high technology, while still being noted for having a general interest in ecological protection on all of its principle planets. Besides these traits, the Aniverse is also generally recognized as being the single most populous section of the SU, with perhaps the most diverse set of inhabitants.
Perhaps the most chaotic and independent mix of planet-states in the SU, the Aniverse is noted for regularly both churning out conflicts, and for taking conflicts of other regions of space into its borders. Two of the most notable warlike factions of the SU - the Saurians, lead by Andross, and the Toad Empire, led by the artificial intelligence KOMPLEX - originated from the Aniverse, and act as a demonstration of the price of the freedom demanded by each of its member planets. This same freedom made it possible for the human known as Julian "Eggman" Robotnik to make his own revolutionary inroads on the Aniverse world of Mobius, where a more repressive or suspicious society would have stopped him before he made any headway.
Despite these drawbacks, the incredible levels of freedom possessed by most members of the Aniverse planets also allows almost universal sharing of information and resources. Trade restrictions and tariffs are minimal, and only the most noxious of substances are considered illegal. Technology, therefore, is fairly widespread, and almost universally available to all citizens of Aniverse planets, and extensive communication networks exist between many of these same planets, ensuring even faster and more efficient sharing of information.
Naturally, the biggest question most people have about the Aniverse is simply this: who exactly is in charge here? The answer is a complicated one. Most planets have their own local forms of government, and the Aniverse as a whole does not seek to infringe upon the rights of its individual members. Overall, the Aniverse is nominally governed by a council known as S.P.A.C.E. Originally founded in the wake of the Toad Wars, S.P.A.C.E. (an acronym that stands for Sentient Protoplasm Against Colonial Encroachment) is both the primary military arm of the united Aniverse, and also its principle regulatory agency for trade, diplomatic relations, and intergalactic law enforcement.
The major problem, of course, with such an independent set of planets, with such a poorly-funded oversight organization, is that S.P.A.C.E. regularly finds that it can't afford to equip itself with a standing military of any serious power. Thus, S.P.A.C.E. is regularly forced to rely on mercenaries and vigilantes and freelancers of all sorts in order to accomplish its ends.
A few of the more notable operatives and organizations that provide regular assistance to S.P.A.C.E. and its associated planets:
Danger Mouse: Perhaps the most highly-decorated official agent of S.P.A.C.E....and also perhaps the only regular agent of that agency to have survived for any significant length of time without either retiring or entering some sideline, such as show business. This incredible, one-eyed white mouse is known for almost impossible levels of precision in all his acts, is a trained master of espionage and counterespionage, and is a seriously deadly hand-to-hand combatant.
Bucky O'Hare: Captain of the S.P.A.C.E. craft Righteous Indignation, Bucky O'Hare is an expert at doing the impossible with minimal equipment and support. This green-furred rabbit and his fearless crew (which is rumored to include a human boy, though these stories are unconfirmed) almost singlehandedly disabled KOMPLEX, destroying its primary core, thus ending the menace of the Toad Empire. These days, the Righteous Indignation spends much of its time on regular patrols. Its crew pulling wages until retirement...or the next big crisis occurs, whichever happens first.
StarFox: Actually a mercenary unit, but one known to work almost exclusively for S.P.A.C.E. or its affiliates. The StarFox team is also known to provide air support, with occasional ground assistance, to various freedom fighters and other revolutionary groups suffering under various forms of tyranny across the Aniverse, with some additional work in the Sol Imperium and even rarely the Realm of Magic. Headed by Fox McCloud after he inherited the unit from his father, James McCloud, the StarFox team's Arwings have proven incredibly versatile and capable of outmaneuvering almost any fighting space force in the SU.
Ratchet & Clank: The ampersand between their names is insisted upon by both members of this partnership. Ratchet the Lombax and Clank the robot are an incredible team of spacefarers and superheroes. Ratchet, while fumble-mouthed and terribly shy in public, is a surprisingly dynamic figure with incredible training as a combatant and also as a space mechanic. Clank, on the other hand, is smooth, suave, and debonair, and has been known to do occasional work as a secret agent for S.P.A.C.E. when requested. Unfortunately, Clank also likes to perform on television and in movies, which somewhat limits the secrecy levels of missions on which he can be allowed.
