Fire burned the ground, a young child stared into it all alone. Yet, from afar, he was watched by a creature ever living thing feared. As the boy drew closer to the flames, the more the creature stared. A predator to all, but this one prey drew an interest to this one. It came its way behind the young child as silent as its eight foot form could. When the creature heard the lessened breaths from the child, it decided the young male was asleep then used its deadly claws to pick up the ladder form. It bounded away to the nearby cave system to a nest that it had made. There among the rocks, fur, and various hides was a smaller version of itself that looked at the intrusion that disturb a nap. A quiet growl comforted the hatchling, "I bring you a mate, my daughter." The voice was little more than growls and grunts, but the little female understood it well. "Mate? I have not brought males to me yet..." "I know, but this little prey creature is different, other prey flee at its scent even its own kin. Protect this one and we shall teach him our ways." "How, mama?" "We shall find a way..."

Years later, a man of twenty whistled happily as he went into a small settlement to get supplies, but today was different. The creature the man grew up beside followed close behind him. Humans aimed weapons at them yet fear held them back. They went up to the local vendor and bartered for a week's worth of meat. The locals eagerly accepted the offer and allowed the estranged couple get out of sight without incident. The couple chuckled as they walked side by side. "Eltris, I am proud of you. Most would have attacked them." "I am not most. I am your mate and I promised to protect you, I shall keep that promise." "I know, mother made that very clear before she went to the Dark Mother." "Of which brings that I have made a nest." "Nest? W-what do you mean?" "My eggs shall rest upon her resting bones. I will laying in the next few weeks." "Laying?" "Yes, mate." The female growled. "We are being followed." "I doubt they are dangerous, but just in case, shall we lead them in a loop to hunt them?" "I shall bring them in, get behind." The human owned a gun, but he rarely used it considering his lover could be far more affective. He drew it then dove into a bush and waited. The female went down the path one hundred paces then waited. A few moments later a human with a rifle came up behind her and passed the bush where her mate hid. "Deathclaw! What have you done with him?" The strange male aimed the rifle at the back of her head, she turned and huffed. "Nothing." She spoke slowly in a language that burned her throat worse than the firewater that her mate had brought home once before. The human shook as he heard the voice that came from the beast. Her mate came up behind the human with his pistol and pressed it against the nape of the human's neck. "You pull that trigger on my mate and you will lose your head." The human lowered the rifle. "Mate? You fucked this beast?" "I have, and she is only a beast in bed. Why did you follow us?" "I was called, Deathclaws ring in the caps. All I needed was the hand for proof. Kidnapping is not their thing." "No, is not our way. I am Horns of Pride in all but skin. Why come after us? We do not provoke our neighbors and we do business with them weekly." "Then why did they hire me to kill her and rescue you?" "They fear her for her looks, she does not enter the confines often. Today was special as we wanted a delicate meal. Now you tell me who hired you." "Cally. Cally Henderson." The two mates growled making the human shiver with fear. "Take us to her." Eltris growled out as she flexed her claws. "A-as you wish." "You piss yourself, I will shoot you in the dick. Go." So the human led them back into the settlement and to a small shack. The settlers gathered as Cally was called out. The woman came out with a minigun starting its rotation. Eltris smacked the weapon out of the weaker female's grip then let a feral growl out. "You called a hit out on us? What have we done to you?" "What you two have done is against humanity! It shall be corrected!" Cally reached into her pocket and pulled a grenade out. Eltris did not hesitate as she shoved her claws through the torso of the enemy then pulled the grenade from the quivering clutches. "Tom, take." She spoke the human tongue as the 'prey' stared at her. She slid the meat off her scaled arm then shook the entrails from them. Her mate took the pinned grenade and went to the leader of the settlement and handed the grenade over to the frightened man. "We do not kill lightly. Please, we like the peace we have. Try to convince the others this." "She was the only one that wanted the violence. She stirred the trouble this morning, after the others saw that... that your companion did not entice violence they wanted her gone. Since we now have an open home, would you two like it?" As the mayor spoke, Eltris came over and stood behind her shorter half. "Benefits on both sides." She spoke slowly, hissing the 'S's as she did so. "I will move nest." "Uh, guess we will take your offer. We will be at the call of the settlement's defense."
