This wasn't what I wanted to do in my life. What I gained in return was simply more worry.

Me, Rick, and Annie had to wait until dark to approach the police station. The lights were dim from the distance, illuminating the pavement, and only a few police officers were there. Must have been the night shift.

I didn't know how we were going to do this. I didn't even want to do this! Breaking and entering into an office of law?! It was seriously messed up to think about it.

Annie was the only reason I was doing this in the first place. She would take a good look around for any signs of trouble, then pulled me and Rick along towards the back of the police station. Her idea was to break in through the back window.

We didn't have any inside map of the police station to work with, so it was a crap-shoot on knowing where the Evidence room is. The only problem we had was wondering how to get in first. I just didn't like the look in Annie's eyes when she came up with ideas.

"Here's my plan." She started. "We jimmy the lock on the window, push Rick in, and have him unlock the back door."

"Newsflash. We're attempting a BREAK IN!" I hoarsely whispered back to Annie. "This is seriously going too far here!"

Rick slaps me on the back a bit, looking up at the window just 6 ft above ground level, and gave the black metal bars guarding it a shake. "It's alright. Not like the window break-in idea is gonna be good."

I took the time to pause from our current predicament, gazed upward, and noticed a security camera over the back door entrance. That was only the second of numerous problems with this break-in. "To top it off, we'd be on live television for breaking and entering!" I hoarsely whisper, pointing up to the camera.

Annie just groaned while rubbing her eyebrows. I felt relieved we had to nix the whole idea altogether. I hoped this would go to a point where we wouldn't have to break in at all.

The game had other plans.

My Game Gear gave a noticeable chime again, causing me to bring it back up into view.

"If I may." The recognizable voice of Cole came through the game. "I could be able to lend some assistance. Please take another look at the door if you will."

Annie yanked the game from my hands, looked at the screen, then back to the door. We finally took notice that the door had an electronic lock mechanism to it. Apparently it was an ID card lock with a number pad for a password.

"If I'm right, these security locks should have a specific disable frequency to them." The game responded.

"Wait. You're not thinking..." I responded. I ended up thinking the same thing when he said that.

"You'll just have to see to find out." Cole responded. "As for the security cameras, I can pull the same trick for that." The Espio sprite on the screen gives a wave over to us after. "Could you hold the game gear up to the electronic lock please?"

Annie brought the game gear up to the lock in question. The game screen showed the Espio sprite approaching a temple entrance, locked with various runes and etchings. Espio brought up a chaos emerald to the front, placing it at the center. The electronic ID lock suddenly flashes on, blinking, as its red and green lights flicker back and forth.

The sprite on the game was suddenly flicking the emerald. The emerald's energy vibrating and letting out a strange high pitched echoing noise. The game gear lets out that same pitch as it rose in tune, causing the electronics in the lock to spasm and jar. It wasn't until the tune hits its apex that the electronic card lock flashes a green light.

The temple doors on the game gear screen opened up, while the back door to the police department unlocked itself ajar.

Annie took to it with flair as she pushes the door open slightly. Her eyes took a look around for any signs of trouble. I had to handle the Game Gear again to keep an eye out for badniks on the screen. From the look of it, it was good thus far.

"I really hope we're not going to jail for this." I muttered.

Rick chuckled before shaking his head. "Dude. We've officially broken into a building of law and order." he retorted with a smile. "I think going to jail is the least of our worries."

From how Rick mentioned it, he made it sound like being in Jail is safer than being murdered. Now that I thought about it, we would be dead either way anyway.

We kept our steps light as possible, walking on through without second thought, and looking around for anything suspicious. I kept my eyes on the Game Gear, watching for Badnik patrols to avoid at given times.

My second worry was, again, the security cameras. "Cole." I whispered, "I really hope you know what you're doing."

"Trust me." The game responded. "They don't even know we're here."

I was quite skeptical of what he meant by that. What I saw, however, took me my surprise. Our characters in the game were holding hands with Espio, traversing through the temple ruins. However, I could see right through them! It looked like they were all sharing Espio's invisibility somehow.

My issue was that I could still see the others here with me. This issue stuck with me when we saw one of the badnik's on the screen. I could hear the footsteps of a patrol officer coming along through.

We ducked at a corner to keep out of sight, hearing the footsteps stepping closer and closer.

The officer was male, mid 40's from his appearance around the corner, and his attire was buttoned up to the cuff as he stood. His hand went to a radio at his side in waiting while walking through. We saw he ended up walking closer to the corner before something happened.

His radio went off at his hip, causing the badnik on the game screen to show an exclamation point on it. I take notice that Espio on the game gear was holding the emerald again in the other hand. The emerald's light shown before flicking it again.

The police officer took the radio in hand, put it to his ear, and responded. "Hello?"

"Robert? I need your attention at the north wing of the station." The text on the game gear showed. But what we saw felt like he was being given orders from another officer in the precinct.

"Something wrong?" he asked.

"One of the others here thought there was something moving about. Probably a rat, but I need your help to confirm if it was or not." The voice on the radio continued.

It wasn't until after a while before the officer just turned the other way, leaving us be without noticing us. This gave us the chance to sneak past and hurry to the evidence room. Sure enough, the game gear pulled the same trick on the electronic locks as it did for the back door.

I suspected that the guard we got past was the one handling the evidence room entrance. Lucky for us. Otherwise, the evidence room was still and silent enough to shake my nerves when we entered. It took a while to check everything here.

"Damn." The game spoke up. It seemed like Cole wasn't going to give good news.

That got Annie rather miffed even before we were told what the real issue was. Rick was too busy toying with one of the confiscated firearms with his finger. Honestly, didn't he know that fingerprints on an incriminating object is going to make things worse?

"Rick, stop poking that!" Annie spoke hoarsely. Rick immediately stopped while looking rather guilty.

"My findings aren't in this room." The game responded. Seemed like the worse was confirmed then and there. "The only other place I would imagine this case file being is in the chief of police's room."

"Why would the chief of police have the evidence?" I asked. I seriously wished there was an easier way to get in and get out from that point onward.

"He showed a big interest in the case considering it was making his department come off as ill equipped with handling the murders. Considering the department was being called out on not handling the cases seriously."

"In the end, I had my doubts about him truly handling the case in question. Only because I thought, while still alive and unaware, that the chief was just being stumped by the murderer. After being put through all this now, I couldn't blame him for not being able to handle this."

"So what you're saying is -" I interjected finally "- that we need to look in the chief of police's private office for your evidence and records?"

"Well let's get going." Annie boasted. Her hand grabbed mine and Ricks before we stopped at the sound of footsteps again. I had to yank them both back in the room, shutting the door quietly as I could, and waiting until the steps made their way out of hearing distance.

I took a sigh of relief after that. Though Annie nabbed my ear while tugging us out. After a few steps down a corridor or two, we made our way to the office. We were lucky that Cole knew the way since he worked here before.

But arriving at the front door of the chief of police's office was another thing entirely. I was shaking in my shoes while staring at the front door. There were no cops patrolling through here. That just made this all the more nerve wrecking.

The lock on this door was more concrete. It was a brass knob with a keyhole for the lock. Seemed like using the electronic frequency method wouldn't work this time around. Though I was interrupted in thought when Rick knelt down to check the lock.

"Huh. Didn't think these guys used key locks anymore." He murmured. He fiddled with his pockets before pulling out some sort of bundle of tools from his pocket.

"...Rick...Where did you get that?" I asked. I had a bad feeling about what he was going to answer.

"Oh this? I thought I'd nab these while we were in the evidence locker. No big deal right?" Him talking so nonchalantly like that worried me.

All I could do was just glare at him behind his neck while Annie kept watch. "You know you're gonna have to put those back right?" I responded rather sternly.

"Dude. We're breaking into a private office like cat burglars and you're worried about us being arrested for theft?" His eyebrow raised with coyness while fiddling on. It took him a while to finally cause the lock to click. "Got it."

"You worry me sometimes Rick." I could only rub my eyebrows while this went on. But I had to pause and look back at Rick. "...But what if this lock wasn't a key lock?"

Rick smirked a bit. "Okay so maybe I wanted to take a souvenir in case I lost my keys at home."

That was enough to make me smack him over the head for that. I didn't have time to question it otherwise. "Bastard..."

But there was no turning back from here. What laid beyond the door from here would be something only god would know. But I did know one thing.

I wasn't going to like this.
