Welcome to part two of the character introductions! With my patrons on Patreon putting the final touches to the various cast of characters, I'd like to take this time to introduce you to the two Rangers of the stories-- one for SF and one for FA:

Rolin the Lynx/Bear Hybrid will be the Chief Ranger of the Feyrahlian Empire on SF and Silas the Fox will be the Premier Ranger of the Feyrahlian Empire on FA. As a reminder, each story will be self-contained and neither affect not be affected by the other; they are two completely separate tales!

Keep your eyes open for more characters over the rest of this week!

Feyrahl - The Ranger (SF), Rolin Flat-Paw

The Feyrahlian Empire has a wide variety of trained, organized, and carefully structured armed forces but, due to the vastness of its wilderness and the unsettled nature of its southern border, it also employs a wide range of irregulars, specifically including scouts, woodsmen, and hunters. Chief among them are the Ranger Corps, the special elite among those members of the military reserved for special actions including gray and black operations. Most are rarely in or around the capitol, except for Rolin, a massive Feline with an obvious cross-ancestry of ursine in his recent family history.

Rolin is surprisingly light on his feet, adroit and dexterous despite his 6'6" (198 cm) stature. Many would presume that a hefty 320 lb (145 kg) woodsman would find it difficult to serve in a military unit expected to be stealthy and covert, but those are the onlookers who would easily overlook him when he is at work. Although Rolin is the youngest among the Sage King's retainers, appearing to be in his early 20s, the woodsman had trained beneath his father, a Lynx of some great renown who held the role before Rolin; after his father's passing, Emperor Caldif transferred his father's title to him and Rolin has served in that capacity ever since.

Although Rolin could pass for a Lynx upon first glance, his mixed heritage is much more visible upon further inspection. He does have distinct feline features including his piercing amber eyes, flowing, fluffy cheek fur, cat spots, an abundance of whiskers, and lengthy ear-tufts, but he also has a large stature, dark brown fur, and a muzzle that more resembles an ursine than a feline. Rolin eschews fine clothing whenever he can, preferring the simple garb of a woodsman including a leather long coat and, when the weather turns cold, a fur cloak. When in the field he prefers dark, natural colors, preferring drab green and browns.

Like Ursine Feyrahlians, Rolin walks on his heels in a plantigrade stance unlike most who walk on their toes (digitigrade); this has earned him the name "Flat-Paw" Even when forced to wear fine clothing while in court, the Ranger refuses to surrender his soft leather field boots, which often clash with the much more expensive silks and satins of high society-- especially since they seem to be more patch than leather.. Rolin has no piercings or rings, but does wear a simple twine-and-bone necklace. He has a single, finely wrought scarred symbol of two overlapping moons on the back of his right paw.

Officially, Rolin is the bastard son of his father, who was a lesser noble who served as the Emperor's chief Ranger for most of his life. While his father's house perseveres, none of his half-siblings acknowledge his existence and so he is considered a commoner retainer, which suits him fine as he was not raised in the lap of luxury and knows little about courtly life or high society. While he has been trained in basic etiquette so as not to make a fool of himself, Rolin does not take part in most activities in court; he does not dance, does not partake in extensive dialogue, and always stands passively at banquets, using his role in the military to avoid having to showcase his minimal table manners.

Despite the constant scorn he receives as a bastard, Rolin is surprisingly warm when interacting with those who do not make him the target of their scorn. He has a few close friends who would die for him, and he would willingly lay down his life for any of them. This side of him is usually well-protected from those at court since he realizes that scorn would be the only possible response from those who already seem to dislike him so much. Still, once he is away from the high-expectation world of high society, the Lynx/Bear is pleasant, personable, open, and compassionate. To those he respects and accepts he is an open book and is willing to go to any lengths to make his friends smile.

Attuned to Air Magic, Rolin has some understanding of the Zephyr and Movement aspects, his true skill is with Summon, which he uses freely to easily fill his quiver, bring a needed item to paw, or, in dire moments, call forth one of his animal companions out of nowhere. He is quite skilled with the ways he can utilize his magic and, rather use it as a weapon, tends to maximize its utility to supplement his already impressive physical capacity and trained skills. It is due to this versatility perhaps, or maybe his status as a mixed breed that he is probably the least bit off-put by MacKenzie's race; most other Feyrahlians at least pause when they see a Human, but Rolin just rolls with it.

Rolin's social mask lead the nobility to often misunderstand him, but he doesn't mind. Despite what those of the court may think, Rolin lives a very content life, making his home out in the wilds away from the slings and arrows of high society. During his time as the Court Ranger, Rolin has undertaken many important duties and numerous operations on behalf of the King, but he is also very skilled at finding time for himself and quite easily manages a well-kept work/life balance. He has numerous friends and has had lovers in the past; he prides himself on the status of his small farm away in the forest and has a number of tamed and trained animals on his property and in the surrounding woodlands.

Being so open and warm, it might be assumed that Rolin would be an easy love interest to advance in a relationship but there are a few barriers: for one, Rolin is quick to make friends but is likely to friend-zone just as quickly, never letting a relationship move past that point; secondly, Rolin might be willing to be physically intimate with someone if that's what they're seeking, but, to him, that does not specifically imply emotional intimacy-- "friends with benefits" is the norm for him, and he has not had much success in any kind of long-lasting romantic relationship. Despite how much he desires that kind of closeness, his past, his bi-racial status, and his lack of familiarity when it comes to positive role models in lasting love makes him flighty at best, and fearful at worst. If Mac can empathize with him, share his joy in a simple life and, most of all, express patience and understanding, he just might have a chance to gain the adoration of one truly sweet kitty-bear.

Rolin will refer to mac as "Interloper" if he actively dislikes him.

Rolin will refer to Mac as "Stranger" if he doesn't like him.

Rolin will respond to Mac as "Human" if he is only willing to put up with him.

Rolin will respond to Mac as "Sir" if he tolerates him.

Rolin will respond to Mac as "Mr. Millman" if he views him neutrally.

If Rolin regards Mac positively he will refer to him as "Millman".

Rolin will respond to Mac as "MacKenzie" if he appreciates him.

Rolin will call Mac "Mac" if he likes him.

Rolin will refer to Mac as "Friend" if he regards him affectionately.

If Rolin sees Mac as a potential lover, he will refer to him as "Handsome".

Feyrahl - The Ranger (FA), Silas Longfield

While the Emperor of the Feyrahlian Empire has always been resistant to the constant call to build up the military, his advisors have had some success in encouraging him to increase the number of irregulars in service to the crown. Woodsmen, scouts, and even spies make up a decent percentage of troops available in the Empire and they are led by a group of relatively independent leaders known as Rangers. Silas, a Red Fox who appears to be in his mid-to-late 30s is one such commander. Like most Rangers, Silas often takes solo operations but he has a network that will allow him to contact those under his command with relative speed.

While not very imposing compared to most Feyrahlians, Silas' relatively short 6'3" height (1.9 meters) puts him on par with Commander Victor and his slim, swimmer's build also puts him at approximately the same weight of 220 lbs (approximately 100 kg); this means that the Fox is often forced to borrow some of the Commander's clothing whenever he is presented before the court as he owns no quality garb his own. There is an ongoing rumor among some of the servicemen that the Raccoon constantly hits on the Fox, and uses the sharing of clothing as another excuse to try and get close. The veracity of the rumors, of course, has yet to be substantiated, but it is largely agreed that Silas has zero interest in the Raccoon.

When left to his own devices, Silas prefers simple, serviceable clothing suited to the weather and made for camouflage. The Fox is neither interested in flashy nor impressive garb and will take function over form any day without question. Despite the simplicity of his clothing choice, Silas takes great steps to maintain his appearance, caring for his fur, maintaining proper hygiene, and making certain that his equipment is always in good repair. While he may often be covered in the dust of the road, he will not suffer the claims that he does not maintain his gear or his body.

Silas is the quintessential Red Fox with reddish orange fur on most of his body, excluding a band of white running from his cheeks, muzzle and neck, down his chest abdomen, groin, and the insides of his thighs; the tip of his tail has a black 'frosting' on the guard hairs. He has bright yellow eyes with dark, eliliptical pupils that become slits in bright light and almost completely eclipse his irises in the darkness. Although it is rarely visible, Silas has a family crest tattooed on the left side of his chest over his heart, though there is a jagged scar slashed through it, more visible through his chest fur than the tattoo itself. The Fox wears no metal jewelry or adornments but does have a woven hemp-and-clay-bead bracelet on his left wrist.

Although Silas was born as the heir apparent to a noble family, the Fox has forsaken his family, swearing allegiance to the crown over family and, as an outcast from his house, took on the surname of Longfield-- his preferred distance from others. As a loner, Silas prefers to avoid interaction unless absolutely necessary. Unlike most recluses, however, the Fox is perfectly familiar with high societal customs and his etiquette is impeccable-- he just doesn't like dealing with people and prefers to avoid all of the hullabaloo of courty life. He has earned quite a name in the Emperor's court and has a near endless list of admirers-- women and men who would like to spend more time with him, but the Fox remains elusive even when outside of his woodland demesne. He is known to be as distant and dismissive as he is handsome.

On the rare occasion he can be pinned down for discussion or, in the rarer case when he has a reason to interact, Silas is shown to be perfectly capable of carrying on a conversation. Further, his capacity to clearly and quickly convey information shows that a Fox of few words can be just as effective in educating an eager mind as a professor or sage. To this end, Commander Victor sends new Rangers to study under Silas more often than any other Ranger among the irregulars. Most of the Fox's trainees come away being ready and able to undertake their roles and inquiries regarding their instructor's demeanor are almost always exactly the same: Silas was professional, to the point, and very impersonal. The fresh recruits are usually thankful for the training, but are left with absolutely no regard for or connection to their instructor on a personal level.

Having an affinity for Earth magic, Silas almost exclusively uses the aspect of Abjuration. Dedicated to the protection of the Empire's forests from poachers, criminals, and agents of other kingdoms, the Fox is skilled with defensive magic related to Earth, with only the most fundamental aptitude with Stone and mediocre control over Force. When utilizing spells in combat, Silas focuses on camouflage, defense, and resistance and uses his physical prowess, bow, and sabre for offense. It is also said that Silas' novel approach to magic was a trait he passed onto Commander Victor, as the Fox is well-known for finding innovative and unique ways to use his spells.

Despite his similarities to Commander Victor, however, Silas is, in many ways quite different. Unlike the Commander, Silas always maintains a professional and impersonal air to him. Where as the Raccoon is a bon vivant sampling all kinds of lurid experiences, the Fox questioned his role within his family when his parents pushed too hard in their demand for him to take a wife and sire an heir; when his mother said she didn't care if he took a male lover so long as he'd find a mistress with whom to sire a child he'd had enough and abdicated. While Silas may have a deep-seated need to find connection with a companion, encounter the warmth of romance, and find a partner with whom to share his life, he is Asexual, and has no interest in sexual intercourse. Since few seem to understand him, he finds that separating himself from society is the best he can do, and ignore his pangs of loneliness since he knows that any relationship would only end in heart-break when a potential partner asks what's "wrong" with him.

Despite how much he isolates himself, Silas greatly craves company and is desperate for emotional intimacy. Still, he has spent so long creating a mental fortress to wall off his need for romance and love that he has almost convinced himself that it is something that he can do without. If Kenzie manages to get past those defense and break through she will find that the Fox is starved for connection. He does not seek sex but is not opposed to physical intimacy in the form of embraces, kisses, and snuggling. If Kenzie grows her relationship enough with Silas it is possible that he will be willing to have sexual intercourse, but he will not instigate it and will be more of a service top for her pleasure than anything else-- he won't enjoy it specifically for the act, rather, he will enjoy making her happy. Pushing the issue on him before he's ready for it, however, will immediately end any future possible meaningful relationship with him.

Silas will ghost Kenzie if he actively dislikes her.

Silas will call Kenzie "Outsider" he doesn't particularly like her.

Silas will respond to Kenzie as "Human" if he only puts up with her.

Silas will respond to Kenzie as "Miss" he only tolerates her.

Silas will respond to Kenzie by calling her "Fuller" if he considers her neutrally.

Silas will call Kenzie "My Lady" if he regards her positively.

Silas will call Kenzie "MacKenzie" once he appreciates her.

If Silas likes Kenzie he will refer to her as "Kenzie".

If Silas starts regarding Kenzie affectionately he will refer to her as "My Dear".

Should Silas see Kenzie in a romantic light he may start referring to her as "Robin".
