A Vacation of Wolves
For Lorvianne
By Draconicon
Lorkos knew that things were going to be awkward at the family reunion. Not just because he was the only one with a primary form that was human – though that was going to be awkward enough, considering his daughter’s mate and the way that he acted – but because it was going to be mostly the three of them. Others might show up off and on throughout the weekend, but he didn’t know who would or when they’d show up. And considering that his relationship with Prestnos was a little bit…fraught, to say the least, he didn’t know how that was going to go.
But he cared enough for Lovianne to want things to work out, so here he was, driving down the road into the forest to the campsite they’d mentioned last month. He leaned back, looking in the mirror at his pale, dark-haired face, and he shook his head. Oh, this was going to be a time and a half.
There was no toll-taker at the front gate of the park, and nobody else at the different sites. He winced as he drove the car to the parking lot, took out the key, and stepped outside. Lovianne’s car was there, but he didn’t see her, nor did he see her literal snake of a mate, either.
Okay…that bodes…interestingly.
Lorkos leaned down, digging a little hole for the car key. He didn’t know what was going to happen for the family reunion, but if it went as far off the beam as most meetings with Prestnos did, he doubted that clothes were going to stay on for long. Best to keep the key somewhere that he could find it again later. He dug out the little hole, stuffed the keys inside, and buried it a few feet from the front of his car.
After that, it didn’t take long to find the footprints leading off from the other car. He knew how to track, and he followed them to the campsite, and from there, to the woods that were just past it. They were obvious, clearly stamped down – and slithered, in the case of Prestnos – and he knew that they wanted him to follow them into the woods.
“Alright…guess we’re going to be going all-nature this time around…”
He shook his head, following the tracks deeper into the forest. Lorkos looked over his shoulder every couple dozen steps, making sure that he could still see where he’d come from and that he wasn’t losing his way. He was almost certain that as soon as he could no longer see the campsite, things would change.
And he was right.
He turned around after seeing that the campsite was no longer in view, and he found himself staring at a pair of feral wolves on a small hill just between the trees. He would have been more scared if they had been black or gray, as that would have meant something more wild, but instead, one was dark gray with green patterns, and the other was a familiar brown and cream color that he was more used to seeing in feline form.
“Prestnos. Lovianne.”
The wolves seemed to smile a bit, their muzzles parting and showing a bit of fang and tongue while they panted. He groaned, shaking his head as he guessed that this was down to Prestnos. His daughter had plenty of nature power, and that was one reason that she kept to a form that was less human most of the time, but this was the first time that he had seen either of them go to a completely feral shape.
This is going to be a long, long weekend, he thought, shrugging off the backpack that he was carrying and letting it hit the path behind him. And knowing you –
The dark-gray wolf looked him right in the eyes, and they glowed green as soon as they made eye-contact. Lorkos grunted, his body seizing up, and he huffed as he slumped forward, falling to his knees almost immediately.
“Nnngh…a little…nnngh…warning…”
Not that he imagined that would ever happen. Whatever good traits Prestnos had, he was always a bit of an asshole to anyone that wasn’t a naga or a full-time anthro. Fucking snake just did what he wanted and –
“Mmmph…”
He could already feel the changes rushing through him, the heat of the fur starting to prickle through his pores and the soft crick-crack that was making its way down his spine. His breath caught in his throat as he leaned forward, his eyes rolling back and clenching shut as his hands hit the ground. The earth gave way as he clawed at it, balling his hands into fists.
At least the magic was magicking the clothes right off him. He could feel the soft breeze through the forest as his shirt and pants disappeared, leaving his skin exposed. Some of it blew between his legs, stirring other things, but the prickle-tickle of the naga’s magic was forcing him to focus on that.
On the slow-growing fur.
On the crick-crack of bone.
On the pull and push inside of his skull.
On the slow-warping of his digits.
On the –
CRACK!
Lorkos groaned, head hitting the earth as he felt his feet crack and arch, the toes and balls of his feet staying close to the ground while the rest pulled upward as he went from having feet to having paws. His breath huffed through clenched teeth as his daughter trotted over to him, her flank pressing against his as a means of support.
It wasn’t much, but having someone touching him did help a bit. Helped anchor him through the process.
The tingling heat continued, running all the way down his spine toward his hips as more and more fur started to sprout. Dark, dark as the anthro form that he had, but with greater thickness than that ever did. Every inch that the fur covered cut out the wind completely, heating him up again, and it spread in shaggy lengths along his back and down his sides. The soft crick-crack of his spine warping grew louder for a moment before –
Pop.
It was a gentle sound, for once, as his tail pushed out from his spine, sliding out through his flesh without so much pain as it had the first time. He shivered as it kept edging out, the disturbing but pleasurable sensation continuing as it got longer and longer. Bit by bit, it edged out over his rump, and –
“Mmmph…”
He rolled his head from side to side, neck getting a bit longer, a bit thicker, but it was the feeling of his face starting to push forward that always held his attention. Even as his ears started rolling up along the sides of his head, getting longer and more pointed, all he could think about was the feeling of his face stretching further and further out, and getting more and more pointed at the nose.
Muzzle.
Teeth.
Tongue.
Everything was growing at once, and even though he was used to it, he kept thumping his hands-turning-to-paws against the ground in frustration. Lovianne leaned over him, her tongue lapping against the back of his neck as soothingly as she could manage, but there was only so much that anyone could do as a transformation like this progressed.
Still, he appreciated it, even as his jaw popped and his teeth pushed in and his tongue lengthened and almost got bitten from the sheer size of it before the rest of his face caught up. His eyes changed, vision different to what it was, and –
Breathe.
Sniff.
The smells in the air around him were much thicker, moist, pungent, thick with a bitterness and naturalness that was missing when he was human. He forced himself to keep breathing through the change, taking in the smells, getting used to the richness of it all over again. It was just as intense as it always was, leaving him groaning under his breath as he rode it out.
Pulse.
Throb.
The changes warped his hands to paws, leaving him with long, blunted claws along his fingers, and his hands were no longer so flexible. His back popped one more time, his hips slotting into place, ensuring that he’d stay on all fours for the duration of the transformation. Not a huge deal, but something that would take him some time to get used to.
Finally, it was done. He was a dark-furred, shaggy wolf, stuck on all fours, with a normal mind. Lorkos shook his head as he pushed himself upright once more, trotting along with his daughter. It took him a few steps to get the balance right – moving with a tail was quite a bit different in feral form compared to anthro – but he got the hang of it after a few attempts. He made his way over to the small hill where Prestnos remained, the transformed naga looking down at him and at Lovianne.
They formed a little triangle between the three of them on the hill. There was something slightly magical about it, as if they had formed a pack out of something that wasn’t quite meant to be one. There was a choice there, a power that meant ‘family’ in a way that they always struggled to keep when they were more bipedal. The fact that they’d have to talk in a different way, pushing to be understood without the same biases that they’d had as bipeds, was going to make for an interesting weekend…but it might actually be good for all three of them.
Without warning, Prestnos threw his head back. Lorkos joined him, and Lovianne came in last. All three of them howled to the heavens, and as they did, he couldn’t help but feel closer to them in a way that he hadn’t for far too long. Maybe this family reunion, feral or not, was exactly what the three of them needed.
At the very least, it felt like it was exactly what he needed, and that was enough for him. They brought their heads back down and – after getting a good sniff of the air – charged off in a direction that they understood, and he just followed. For now, he would learn how to be a good wolf, and would follow their lead. They leaped over root and hill, and he charged after them, barreling effortlessly between the trees, only knowing that he had to follow the other two wolves and trust them.
They were pack, after all. They wouldn’t steer him wrong.
