Chapter 2 - After The Moment

That Friday was the last week of school since it started in the middle of the week. After school the five friends met up at Nate's house where he parked in the driveway and opened the garage door. They finished setting their instraments up before adjusting the volume dials on the speakers and amps. Alyssa had a triple bass drum setup with the middle sets of drums and bass drum being an electronic one. She could play any genre she wanted to. The front of the base drums had coverings that spelled out their band name After The Moment. Originally Nate had used the name Hennesey Exrpress, but after watching a movie the line after the moment stuck with him and thus he changed the name to After The Moment. They played 90s style Alternative rock. Alyssa was their drummer and backup vocals when needed, Naomi the lead guitarist, Ace the bassist and backup vocals, Kenji handled the keyboards and turbtable decks along with miscellaneous percussion, and Nate was the lead rhythm guitarist.

"What should we start with?" Ace asked. Nate shrugged and said "What about Iris?" They all aggrieved to that song and so they got ready to start. Alyssa hit her drumsticks against themselves as she said "1 and 2 and 3" Which led to Nate and Kenji dropping the opening chords before Nate began to sing.

They spent and hour or so practicing, so much so he didn't Notice Damion go in through the front door. And as they were in middle of another song Tyler had come home. Intrigued by what Nate was up to he leaded on the front of Nate's car to watch.

Nate suddenly stopped and the rest followed suit, "What's up man?" Ace asked. I missed the damn transition chord to the chorus again." Nate said." "You'll get it man, just relax, you're putting too much pressure on yourself." Naomi said. "Woah you guys are in a band?!" Tyler suddenly exclaimed. "Hey cuzzo," Nate said, Yeah been since middle school." "Why cool man. I love your sound so far." Tyler said. "Thanks little guy." Ace said. "You're welcome to stick around and watch." Naomi said. "I though you said your cousin's were pains in the....." Kenji said before Nate cut him off, "Tyler's gotten a lot better. Can't say the same for Damion." "Alright guys, Over and Over." Alhssa said and they got back to band practice. They practiced til about 3PM when Nate's Aunt and His mom came home. She parked her windstar next to Nate's car.

By than the friends were breaking down their instruments, "Hey mom." Nate said. "Hey hon. How'd practice go?" She asked. "Not too bad. Still having a problem with that one song on the chord progression." he said as he put his guitar in it's case. "You'll get it eventually." she said. "Mom this has to go perfect otherwise we might not be considered for events at the school like this again." he protested. The others had already packed up and headed to the street curb and got in their cars and headed for home leaving Alyssa the last one there. "Isn't Ace's mom on the committee?" she asked. "Yeah she is." Nate said. "Than you have nothing to worry about." She remarked. "By the way mmom can I use your b=van to take ALyssa and her drum set home?" he asked. "Sure. Just be back by dinner and no drag racing." she said throwing him the keys. "Thanks." Nate said. Nate helped Alyssa load her drum set into the minivan. Afterwards he pulled his own car into its garage parking space and than got behind the wheel of the Windstar. They pulled out, reversing into the streets and heading to Alyssa's house on the next block. It literally took maybe a half a minute to get there. He helped her catty the kit into her house.

"Hey there you are. Where were you this afternoon?" Alyssa's mom asked. "Over at Nate's we had band practice, he's just helping me get my drums in." Alyssa said. At that point Nate had walked in carrying the last of the bass drums, "Oh I didn't know you were home at this time Mrs. Jacksons." he said. "PTO for the next two weeks. So how have you been Nate?" she asked. "Surviving." he said, not wanting to bring up all the drama of the past couple of days and over the summer. "It's all we can do these days." she said. "We're just getting fine tuned for the homecoming dance, they have us as the scheduled live band this year." he said. "Welll you guys finally got somewhere." she said, "So have you all thought about where you're going to college?" "Not really, Nate wants us to go to Northern Illinois, I said University of Arkansas, we're kinda deadlocked." Alyssa said. "Well have you at least decided what you're going to do?" "No really," Nate said. "I don't know about Alyssa but 8i plan on getting in on a baseball scholarship. If i'm lucky I can hopefully make the majors." "Such a shame to waste that brilliant talent you have for writing lyrics Nate." Alyssa said in response. "I guess, I don't know. I mean I want to play baseball. I'm darn good at it. But on the other hand you know im a whiz with electronics, i play the guitar like a professional, I just don't know what I really am passionate about to do the rest of my life and i only have a year to figure it out." Nate said in a huff. "Well I'm sure some sign will come to light at some point. Just don't overstress yourself thinking about it now." Alyssa's mom said. "Yeah but life goes by quick when it's your last year of high school, heck it still seems like just yesterday we were just entering high school. It's gone by so fast." Nate said. "Hey look at the upside, We got through it. I mean we still have one more year left, but we got through it,. Besides a lot of fun memories are to be had, the dances events, getting our licenses, the play's the drama." Alyssa said. "I suppose so" Nate said in response, "Anyways if that's the last of your drums I gotta get back with mom's van before she kills me. See you tomorrow?" "Sure just give me a call and ill be right over." Alyssa said as she kissed him on the cheek. Clueless and oblivious as always, he had no idea he was reciprocating that little crush as he got back in the van and started to back out of the driveway. "So" her mom said, "Are you ever going to tell him or are you ust going to let this one get away?" "MOM!" Alyssa protested.

Nate got home parked the van and the evening went on as normal. In the following week things got a bit easier on the living situation as everyone got used to the set up. Tyler started doing his homework in Nate's room when he was there to get some peace from Damion who started smoking weed. Now this was a weed legal state. If you has a medical card. He did not. But the added bonus to this situation was Nate would help Tyler out with his homework when needed. The month of September had come and the weather was turning slowly, while there were still warm sunny days, the Fall breeze finally set in making it hoodie weather for sure. The leaves were also turning and that dat was a Saturday as Nate lounged on the couch doing nothing but sending text messages on his phone to people.

"DAIMION!" the silence was shattered as Nate's mom yelled from the laundry room, "Take out the trash for the tenth time." "Gods fine. Get off my back already." he said going to take out the kitchen trash. Nate's mom stuck her head out the laundry room door which connected the garage and before she could say anything Nate chimed in, "Pick your battles mom Is it any surprise that Damion's a flake by this point." "I suppose you have a point. By the way you lazy cat. Aren't you supposed to be raking the leaves outside?" she said.. "Oh daner I was hoping you'd forget about that. Alright I'm on it mom. Give me one second." he said as he got up off the couch,

Nate was outside using a leaf blower on the driveway when Alyssa walked up. "Hola mi amigo Coma esta?!" she said laughing. "Oh ha ha." Nate said,, "Do I look like hired mexican help to you?" "No but that was funny." she said. "Yeah okay, just remember," he said half chuckling, "You may be my best friend, but when the zombie apocalypse comes, I'm tripping you and running." "Not if I trip you first." Alyssa said sticking her tounge out." "Oh good we'll both be tripping each other." He said. "Yeah we're both kinda fucked." came her response. "So what's up today?" she asked him. "Leaf blowing obviously. I hate fall, Because when I'm done with this i have to rake the front yard." Nate said. "Sucks to be you." Alyssa said. "No," Nate said, "Sucks to be you." as he picked up some leaves and threw them at her playfully before pulling her down to grass on the front yard by grabbing her legs."Gah, you retard." she said laughing as they got involved in throwing leaves at each other.

Tabitha and Liz spied on them outside the window in the laundry room that connected the garage to the main house. "How long you think they'll go before one of them just tells the other?" Tabitha asked. "Don't know but they better soon before the other finds someone else." Liz said folding some laundry. Tabitha opened the window in the laundry room and shouted through the screen, "Hey get back to work those leaves arent going to rake themselves." "Shit." Nate said under his breath as he started getting up off the ground. "Alyssa wanna help me bag?" he asked. "Sure why not. I'm already here." she said. "Thanks." Nate said. And so they spent the day raking and cleaning up the yard of all the leaves.

Later they spent the rest of the evening on the couch watching a movie til about dinner when Alyssa said, "I got to get back home so hopefully I'll see you Monday. I got my own chores i got to get done at home, like finishing helping my sister pack up for her move." "Where's she going?" Nate asked. "She got a job in Oregon after she graduated and her start date is in a week so she's been at home packing a U-Haul truck and she's going to drive out there. apparently this company that hired her was able to provide housing for her. Gonna be weird without her here.. Makes me wonder where we'll be in another 4 years." she said. Nate walked her to the door as he let her out as she kissed him on the cheek in a friendly way, "See you Monday." she said. She was dropping so many hints without realizing it and it was all going over his head.

Monday rolled around and it was your typical boring day at school until when heading to his class he pass his cousin Damion cornerd by Apollo the star of the football team. He was harassing the hell out him when Nate shouted, "Hey dumbass." Apollo turned around and said "The fuck do you want asshole?" "Get your fucking hands off my cousin now before I start using your head for batting practice!" he shouted. "Oh yeah and whose gonna make me? you you little scrany twin!?" he said has he grabbed Nate by the collar shoving him against the nearest locker. Nate was not scrawny by any means he spent a lot of time weight training for baseball. But at this moment with Apollo distracted Damion slipped away. Nate's plan worked, Distracted him so his cousin could get away. They may not have seen eye to eye but he was still family. Problem is he didnt think the rest of this out . As Apollo was about to give Nate a facial reconstruction with his arm and fist raised back he felt a seering pain hit him in the back . "Hands off dumbass." Ryan had come to Nate's aid along with Matt the first baseman. and They were ready to throw down. "You forgot you stupid shit you fuck with the baseball team you fuck with all of us." Matt said. and within instant a 3 on 1 beat down started with all three of then ganging up on the stallion before a teacher passing in the hallway came and broke up the fight.

"Okay" said the teacher, "All four of you march your buts s down to the den's office now." Which they did with some grumbling. And off to Dean Martin's office they went. All four were in his office, and after hearing what happened said, "And just what the hell were four thinking? Starting a fight in my school? You better have a good explanation for this." "Yeah tell this muscle headed idiot t o back off my cousin. I walked up on him bullying my cousin so I planned a distraction so he could get away. Unfortunately I didn't plan the rest out and ended up slammed into a locker ." Nate said. Roan chimed in, "Matt and I saw Nate pinned to the locker by the throat so we wrestled Apollo to the ground. Than all three of us dogpiled on him." Matt nodded in agreement. Apollo was silent there was nothing he could say or do to get out of this because it was obvious he started the situation. "Well Apollo? Anything to say?" Martin asked. "No." he said. Dean Martin sighed. "You four have really got me between a rock and ahard place. The fact Nate was defending his cousin, the fact You two came to Nate's Aid and the Fact that we need Appollo for the homecoming football game........Against my better judgement I'm going to go leniant on you four. Three weeks of in school suspension starting tomorrow. Violence in this school will not betolerated You four are Senios So start acting like Mature Adults. And If i see you four in my office for fighting again I can assurfe you that you will not gradute this year. Now get back to your classes." And with that the four shuffled out his offices and back to their clases.

The day went on as normal til the final bell rang and Nate and Alyssa were getting into his car, But Alyssa could tell something had him down even at lunch but he wouldnt talk about it than. She tried prying again, "You okay Nate?" she asked as he pulled out of the parking lot. "I'm Fine." he said. "You're not fine Nate your ears are drooped back. What's bothering you?

she said. He sighed, "I got ISS for the next 3 weeks for being involved in a fight." Really? I thought you were better than that." She said. "No Alyssa I didn't get into on purpose, at least not at first. Apollo was picking on Damion when I walked past so I provoked him vernally to give Damion time to slip away. The sad part is i didn't think my entire plan out and got slimmed into a locker by my throat. Matt and Ryan came past on the way to their classes and wrestled him off me. When he got to the ground I joined in on the dog pile on Apollo to help them out. And we got busted . I wasn't looking for a fight Alyssa I was just trying to help my cousin even if he rubs me the wrong way sometimes." "Well I'm not too happy with you dogpiling on him. But I cant blame you for standing up for your cousin." Alyssa said. "Yeah well if mom finds out my ass is toast." Nate said. "I'm sure it will be okay Nate." was all Alyssa said.

After dropping Alyssa off at home Nate backed into the driveway and into the garage. He walked in through the laundry room entrance only to be bombarded by his mom who was washing dishes at the island sink, "So get into any fights today?" "Mom, I uh ...." he stammered, "Zip it. I got a call from your school a three on one beating? I swear. I know i raised you better than that." She said. "Mom they didn't tell you the full story. Damion was being picked on and I created a verbal distraction to get him time to escape. I didnt know it would end up with me slammed into a locker. Matt and Ryan happened to be passing by and they wrestled him off me and I guess I joined in to help them out. Mom you have told me constantly since i was a cub, that you always stand up and hep family when you can.. I know Damion rubs me the wrong way sometimes but I'm not going to let the wolves in that school attack my cousin." Nate said in protest. "I guess I did tell you that didn't I? Look I'm grateful you stood up for Damion, but you could have gone about it another way. You didn't have to join in on kicking them in the face. I'm only going to tell you this one time. If I get a call from that school again that you were involved in a fist fight or another brawl, than you can hand over your car keys you can forget going to Homecoming and performing with the rest of your band." she said "Really mom? You're going to pull that card?" he said with an annoyed tone. "Don't take that tone with me boy. And yes I'm going to pull that card. Because you're a senior and almost 18. Stop acting like a child. Grow up Nate, Like you have been before." she said with a disappointed tine in her voice. "Be lucky I don't ground your ass. " she said. Nate slinked away and flopped on the couch as Damion walked in after the bus dropped him off.

"Hey." he said. "Look I know we didn't get off to a good start Nate, But thanks for distracting that idiot." he said. "Yeah well you owe me, man. I got 3 weeks of in school suspension for that." Nate said. "Didn't think you'd get involved in anything that bad." he said. "Yeah well when your pinned by the thraot to a locker......regardless. Apollo is a muscle headed jock idiot. I think theirs more air in his head than brains. Even the baseball team avoids him like the plague whenever they can." Nate said. "Problem is he sits at my lunch table. I spent lunch today in the library. Now he's got me terrified to even sit there after what you and your friends did." Damion said. "Tell you what just come to the back of the cafeteria, You got lunch what 6A?" Nate asked. "Yeah. Why?" he questioned. "That back table is where my group of friends sits at lunch. You'll be safe there." Nate said.

The afternoon went on with everyone returning home and eating dinner. While the others watched a movie on TV Nate went to his room and shut the door passing out face down on his futon like he did overnight. A lot of energy was expended today so he slept like a log until the next morning when his alarm woke him up. It was another long and boring day at school especially sine he was ISS. After that day though he was waiting out side for Allyssa while him and Ryan played catch with a baseball. Alyssa exited the school shortly after they started, "Hey Nate. Enjoy your day?" she asked. "She's joking right?" Ryan said. "She better be. Either way that was a horrid joke. Do we look like we enjoyed ourselves?" he said. "Hey only 20 more days to go boys. So Nate did your mom read you the riot act?" She asked. "Yes. She did I told you she would if she found out. I had no idea the school called." he said. "Well I'm ready, lets get back home." she said, "Later Ryan." "Take care you two." he said as they walked away towards Nate's car. They Took off for home shortly and instead of going down Alyssa's street, he went down a different street and said, "Wanna go hang out at Burger Shack for a while?" "Yeah sure, why not." she said. "You know I always enjoy hanging out with you." She added hoping he'd catch the hint in her voice. But as always Mister Oblivious didn't. He pulled into the parking lot and parked as they got out of the car and walked in together ordering their food and sitting down at a table. The afternoon rush was in effect for sure as the restaurant was crowded. "So seriously Nate now that it's just us, how was ISS?" she asked "Miserable. I feel like an idiot I could have just walked away when w=Matt and Ryan wrestled Apollo to the ground. I mean Damion got away which was my plan. But no I had to jump in on the action like a fool." he said. "Don't beat yourself up too hard. You made a mistake. It'lll be okay. It's nt like you were trying to impress anyone anyways." she said. "I know but maybe mom was right and I was acting foolish and Immature." he respoded. "Maybe. But you did the right thing overall. You just got a tad carried away in the end. Just don't beat yourself up. You always have a habit of doing that." she said. "I guess it's a habit I've never learned to break." Nate said. "ust have to work on it, you know set goals for yourself and try to better yourself. Like remind yourself that your friends dont judge you for things you do so blaming yourself isntt going to fly in your life anymore." Alyssa said taking a bite of her burger. "Never really rhought of that before." Nate said. "Silly" she said, "Sometimes you gotta use that noggin for something other than blank space." She giggled. Alyssa always enjoyed playfully teasing Nate.And that just showed how close their bond was as firiends. When they were two they got along well and in kindergarten thats when Alyssa realized that he was a special friend and she started paling around with him all through school, a nd Nate was okay with this even when other kids teased him in elementary school about cooties. After they got done eating they headed for home getting into his car as he peeled out of the parking lot. After returned home they walked into Nate's house and sat down at the table so he could help her with her math homework since he was a more advanced math student than she was.

A few hours into their session they were studying at the table when his mom walked in, "Oh you're home. I see Alyssa's over." "Yeah we're just doing homework." Nate said. "Hey" Nate said, "Since we're finishing up the last of it, feel like taking a dip in the pool?" "Sure," Alyssa said "Should still have a spare swimsuit in your closest in case of emergencies." The two of them got up and walked into Nate's room to change into their swimwear, returning a bit later wtih towels and walking out the back patio door towards the above ground poo.

Now Nate's mom said one year when he was little she's get him one big Christmas gift, a dirt bike or the pool. Alyssa who was present at the time talked him into the pool which depsite wanting the dir bikes they used all through their childhood. It was an above ground pool with a deck that surrounded it and a small pool house at one end. The climbed the stairs to the pool As Alyssa was bent over setting one of the pool rafts in, Nate got a devious grin and gently pushed her over and she went into the water head first flipping over the pool raft. But she didn't surface right away. "Alyssa! You okay?!" he shouted. suddenly she burst up from the water and grabbed him by the ankle as he tumbled into the water. She laughed loudly as he scrambled out of the pool dripping wet. "I hate that." he esclaimed. "Than why do you have a pool sacredly cate?" she asked. Nate rolled his eyes and ran towards the pool cannon balling in and sending a wave at Alyssa. "Now we're even." He said. "Not even close homeboy" she said splashing him in the face." This continued all afternoon when it was time for Alyssa to head back home. They got out of the pool toweling each other off as Alyssa went into the house to go change iinto her clothes and Nate did the same. All these years later and they still found ways to entertain each others At this rate it was only a matter of time. The day ended with Alyssa going back home and Nate heading to the table to eat dinner. It was a decent day after all.
