Micro May Day 16: Premium Collection
This story's prompt was: D&D gone small and looping. A squirrel tries to get his friend to play a game with him.
"You will never guess what happened! Everyone else is busy. Come on, just try it sometime." The voice over the phone says.
"Alright! Just quit twisting my knob already." I say, annoyed
"Great, I'll see you at six tonight!" He hangs up.
"Wait, I didn't say... Fuck." I sigh out; my break was almost over, and I get back to work. This construction job was very demanding.

I got a shower in and was on the way to my friend's house. He was a chubby squirrel man that was helping me take some college classes. It was hard being older than most of the adults there, but I wanted to do something else with my life. Being a big, burly badger helped me handle the job, but that doesn't mean I liked it. I knock on the door when I get there.
"Oh, hi! Please do come in." He says excited. I looked down at him, as I was a little over twice his size. I was bigger than average, and he was shorter. That fact didn't matter to me.
"Uh, sure. Thanks." I duck the door and head in.
"Can I get you anything? A drink or something?"
"Sure, some water would be nice, since I know you only have your strange sodas otherwise."
"You won't know if you like it until you try it. But I won't force it on you." He starts getting me a glass of water as I sit down.
"So, what did you want to do again? I know you were rambling on about something or another."
He runs away and gets something out of the table, plopping down some kind of game board and a lot of books and pieces.
"I wanted to see if you would be interested in joining our little Dungeons and Dragons group."
I look around. "Isn't a group meant to have more people?"
"Yes, but think of this as a kind of tutorial run to get you up to speed with everyone else. I would have played with them if they weren't all busy."
I sigh, knowing if I didn't play along, he would keep bugging me about it until I did. "Fine, what do we do first?"
"Well, you have to make a character. I'll help you fill out the details, but first you need to pick a class."
"What are the classes?"
"Well, there is a good choice no matter what you like to do, but since we have most of the classes alright, I would recommend fighter or barbarian."
"Okay, I'll be a fighter."
"Perfect, you don't mind if I fill in some of these more boring details really quick, do you?"
"Thanks; I'll make sure you ask you about some choices later." It goes pretty quickly, while I give some short responses; we get a character made and ready to go. "There you are, your character sheet. We can change things later if you change your mind and don't like it. For now, let's try to play. I'll be your DM and have you do a trial run of a little campaign I made. I'll give you some allies too and try to adjust things." He sets the models on the table, and I swear I see them move.
"What are those? Did they move?"
"Those? They are some of the most advanced game models ever, and they can move on their own. Are they great? Just be careful with them because they are more fragile."
I look at them, and they seem to stand pretty still. I lean down and can see it moving very slightly, like someone making an effort to stand still. "Wow, you aren't kidding, they are lifelike!"
He laughs and keeps going. "Okay, let me set the stage: You and your team, a cleric and a wizard, are looking for a lost treasure inside a dungeon. Said to be worth an untold amount of gold. You want it to fund your wildest dreams, but the place is filled with danger, and it is said that no one ever comes back from the dungeon."
"Okay, what now?"
"Normally, people would choose what to do. I'll let you take the lead, and we will be playing with some house rules to make things easier. I'll help you with the rules of the game later. I think it's better that you play. Now your party is standing outside the dungeon. What do you do?"
"Go inside?" The models start walking around a game mat on the table, responding to me.
"Inside the door was an evil mage ready to curse anyone that entered his lair! I'll simplify the combat a bit. Basically, it's going to be my roll vs. your roll, and that will determine what happens. We will largely leave stats out of it for now. Roll for Initiative."
I take the die and roll it. "3"
"Okay, so the enemy goes first. It casts a powerful curse on you, and now we roll for the effect."
I roll the die again. "1"
"That's not good. I got a 20, and that means it was very effective. It was a shrinking curse."
As he says, my vision starts to shift down and my clothes get baggy.
"What the hell is going on?!"
"I take my game very seriously, and now you are a part of it." He puts on a wide grin. I shrink down to the size of one of his models, and he grabs me and puts me on the game board. "Now for a little more magic." He twirls his finger, and I get an outfit just like the class I picked.
"Good now, let's get you all put away. Got to get used to your party after all."
"What the fuck are you doing? Stop!" He grabs me and the others and puts me in a special case with them.
"Have fun with your new friends! Just need one more, and we can have some real fun!" He walks away, and I bang on the glass uselessly.
