“So do you think it’s ready yet?” A Caribbean Shorthair Cat asks. His name is Tommy and he’s wearing a black t-shirt with a blue star in the center, beige khaki shorts, a green collar around his neck and multiple different colored wristbands around his arms, legs and tail.

“It’s almost ready. I think it needs just a few final SCRAPE touches and it’ll be PRESS done!” A polar bear with light blue spots, wearing fairly worn out blue jeans, brown open toed sandals and a chef’s coat answers while he’s busy evening out the frosting on a two layer sheet cake cake with a scraping tool. The cake is a double layer eggless chocolate cake with mango jelly in the middle of the two sheet cakes carefully combined together. The frosting is gray, off white, green, blue and even has stripes of a few colors on top of those.

“How much longer do you think it’s gonna be? You know what time I told him to be here right?” The cat bounces up and down on alternating paws with the nervousness of someone trying to time everything just right.

“I know, I know but you can’t rush perfection. Should be done in about SQUEEZE six minutes.”

“Six minutes!? Theo, he could be here any minute!” The caribbean cat loudly exclaims at the spotted polar bear named Theo.

Knock Knock Knock

“And there he is. Is this place even ready for a party? Are we ready?” Tommy rhetorically asks while looking around his house from one of the open walls of his kitchen.

“Nope… but you can probably stall him while I finish sculpting these ears. I think after I do that and maybe one other thing, this cake should be complete and we can figure out things from there.” Theo says as he squeezes more frosting from his piping bag and its specialized tip that’s gotten him halfway to completing this recreation of a cat’s ear.

“It’ll all work out, I have faith in us. Now please go stall your boyfriend while I finish up.” Theo finishes that sentence by gesturing to the door and Tommy walks toward it.

Tommy hesitates as he tries to think of how he’ll stall the wolf he loves so much. The cat gulps nervously and opens the door and there is his boyfriend wearing a black shirt with some kind of canine on it, grey jeans, light blue and white sneakers and a green bandana that he lowers after his boyfriend opens the door. The two look lovingly into each other’s eyes, the cat’s bright blue eyes staring into the wolf’s vibrant green eyes and for a solid minute neither of them moves. Tommy’s white tipped tail swishes back and forth with a mix of happiness and anxiousness while Ryuku’s blue tipped tail wags with joy. They just appreciate the sight of each other and savor the seconds together despite neither of them making a move until the wolf, Ryuku does.

“… so are you going to let me in?” Ryuku says while trying to take a step forward but Tommy doesn’t let him with the cat instead taking a step forward himself with his bare paws.

“Uhh I think we should get a bit more fresh air with me.., being in the kitchen all day you know? Besides you-you haven’t given me a hug yet.” Ryuku is about to point out how odd Tommy is acting but realizes his partner is right and does give him a hug. This buys about an additional thirty seconds or so.

“Okay. Now can I come in?”

“Not yet, dear.”

“What?How come??” At this point Ryuku is trying to peer past Tommy’s shoulders but the caribbean cat keeps blocking him at practically every attempt.

“Because… because… SWIPE” Unable to think of any excuse while so quickly put on the spot Tommy just swipes at Ryuku’s bandana which makes it fall to the ground.

“You really can be such a CAT sometimes.” The wolf says while reaching for his bandana.

Tommy “accidentally” catches it with his footpaw and flings it back more towards the sidewalk by the house. Ryuku groans with frustration but goes to fetch his bandana which the wind carried a bit farther than the shorthair cat intended. He does catch up with it though which means he can start walking back towards the house. Tommy meets him halfway back by using the speed of a worried feline and gives Ryuku a big smile as he blocks the canine’s path back to the house. Ryuku now rolls his eyes and would have been tempted to bare his fangs if this was almost anyone else.

“Grrr, now I know you’re acting weird. What is up with you today?” Ryuku growls but it’s a soft growl followed by genuine concern for his boyfriend.

“Uhh, well… I just wanted you to see… that tree. Have you ever noticed how tall it is?”

“Okay Tommy, what is going on?! If I didn’t know any better I’d think you were just trying to distract me from something?” The wolf gives Tommy a firm but questioning look.

“Nothing’s wrong dear. I wanted… to appreciate the nature around us before heading inside and… I think we did that. Let’s go inside, we’ve got a surprise in store for you!” Tommy’s mood turns from hesitant and suspicious to relieved and excited as he sees Theo rapidly gesture for him to come back inside with a paw and those green and blue sclera eyes.

“Uh huh. Let’s head in then.” Ryuku says with tinges of doubt in his voice. He’s trusting him, admittedly with some apprehension given he’s still not sure whether something’s wrong with his boyfriend or not. He’s hoping this surprise will help things make sense.

“Let’s!” Tommy happily responds but also takes a second to wipe some sweat from the gray fur on his forehead.

Him and Ryuku head back to the house as Theo at first waits by the door. As the two get closer to Tommy’s house the polar bear moves away from the doorway to go back further inside. Ryuku and Tommy make it inside and Tommy starts to lead them both to the kitchen before Theo briefly stops them. His ursine friend quickly tells Ryuku to ”wait here one second” and brings his feline boyfriend into the kitchen. Ryuku doesn’t see much of what the two do other than Theo making some kind of wave gesture with a black padded paw and then Tommy’s blue padded paw makes a similar gesture. The caribbean shorthair then tells his partner that they’re ready so Ryuku walks into the kitchen and his tail starts wagging even harder than before at what he sees in front of him.

“Happy Birthday!!” The bear and cat happily shout in unison.

“You guys are amazingggg! You didn’t have to do all this just for me.” Ryuku says while looking around the kitchen to see that his friend and boyfriend cleaned up and decorated the place for his birthday.

There’s a big colorful banner on the top of the entering wall that says Happy Birthday Ryuku on it. There’s balloons, colorful paper dishes and utensils on the clean, some party hats and party horns, dark blue cloth covered table in the center of the kitchen, some steaming hot pizza boxes on top of it and then last but nowhere close to least is the now properly ready cake. It’s still the same double chocolate cake with that mango center but now with the final touches done what Theo was doing becomes clearer. He made the frosting resemble Tommy with the colors of it matching the colors of his fur and wristbands. He sculpted out a rough body shape from frosting and then made a small head from just carefully molded frosting and a bit of leftover cake batter that he cooked separately.

“We didn’t have to but we wanted to so y’know we did.” Tommy sheepishly laughs.

“It’s your birthday after all. You deserve to feel special.”

“Thank you! The cake though, it looks insane but can I-?”

“It’s got no eggs so you should be good to dig in.” Theo reassures Ryuku with a smile that shows off his fangs.

“Sweet! It looks almost as tasty as the real thing.” Ryuku’s blue tongue licks his lips while looking at Tommy who’s now got a slight blush to his cheeks.

“You-you can’t tease me like this. Such a preddy pup.” Tommy huffs while crossing his arms in faux anger.

“Sure I can. You’re delicious. Maybe we should have dessert now. I don’t feel like waiting till after lunch if I’m being honest.”

“That’s fine with me. Though I think I know what you’d really prefer right now.“ Theo knowingly looks at Tommy who looks back at him and then the cake and then Ryuku.

Then without any further thought Tommy dips his head and collides with part of the cake which is thankfully large enough to not completely crumble at the smashing of such a weight on it. When Tommy raises his head back up a good portion of his face is covered in frosting, chunks of chocolate cake and even some globs of mango. For a moment there is silence until Theo busts out laughing, a hearty belly laugh and then the wolf and cat couple do as well. After a shared laugh Ryuku quickly catches a bit of cake that was about to fall off of his boyfriend’s cheek with a black padded finger and sucks the cake right off it.

“Huff, now that is perfect. So glad you could add to the flavor.“ The wolf looks to his boyfriend and then winks. Tommy tries to retort back, opening his muzzle several times to try and say something but only flustered syllables come out.

“You two are too perfect together. You both okay if I start digging in? I’m starving!” Theo says while rubbing his white furred belly and eyeing the pizza boxes.

“Help yourself.” Tommy and Ryuku say at the same time then laugh about it as Ryuku then gives Tommy’s face a lick that is both loving and cleaning as it gets a fair amount of the cake out of the feline’s facefur. For right now the birthday party is just the three of them with more guests likely to arrive soon but in the meantime they all enjoy this time together on this special birthday for a great friend and in Tommy’s case boyfriend.
