Angela - Interview
#8 of Angela Thomas
Story about a blind genetically engineered wolverine going through life in society. Trying to become a citizen the world she's been thrust into. Well, so what others tell her. She just wants to be happy, live, and maybe find love.
This is more of a side story idea that popped up in my head and co-wrote with Seth Triggs.

"This is Caylee Braden with Live! Tonight, she's been the talk of the town, a controversial flash point as newer types of morphs struggle to gain acceptance in society. We have here Angela Thomas, a wolverine morph from near Anchorage, Alaska. She decided to sit down for an interview with us as we learn about her controversial experience and how she responds to it."
"Angela, how are you today?"
The wolverine obviously looked a little nervous despite her smile as she sat in her chair. Her ears swiveled at the voice as she shifts in her chair, overly cautious on her posture as she is wearing her typical camo clothing with reflectors and the "Property of US Government" printed on her shirt. The goggles was removed to help the viewers to 'connect' with her, though it's very obvious her eyes are just blankly looking at nothing as it's her ears and nose that seem to shift around as she responds with a growl, "Peachy." She then chuckles nervously, "Heh, do I look okay?" Obvious she's not sure if they are recording or not.
"You look fine, you look fine. Definitely different than what one would expect. So many of the viewers out there, they have never seen a wolverine morph before. They did not know what to expect. How do the people you meet feel about you before they meet you, compared to what they think now?"
Angela chuckles as she looks amused by the question. She could not help but adjust the flower on her head as she then growls, "Well, from what I could feel and even overheard, scared. Scared and unsure what to expect of me really. I came in the school already knowing for years of how my kind are perceived and viewed. So I wasn't surprised by the reactions. Still hurt me though, but I wasn't like all shocked about it. But things could have been worst, so I am blessed nothing horrible happened. At least not at first. I think from I overhear now is I am sorta a wild card. Some overheard I am a pushover, and others say I am like a cornered animal. Like that thing will leave you alone if you just ignore it. Heh, I guess it's better than attack it with fire." She then goes silent, not sure what to say more about it as her tail then start to idly sway randomly.
"Do you think all of that will make it difficult to find people sympathetic to you? Will it make it difficult to find new friends? How challenging has it been to have friends?"
Angela tilted her head, then sighs as she shrugs. She then snarls quickly, "It's not easy. Especially since prior to this, I was just some creature in a lab who was given the freedom to roam half of the building and even the grounds outside. Didn't help that I was just more than happy...well, comfortable to just stick to my small group of friends I made at the lab. Which were mainly just my handler. I didn't get along with all of them, but most of them I felt we hit it off well. Though it always saddens me when they end up having to leave due to new assignments or whatever. What I am trying to say is, I blame myself for my lack of social skills more than just my looks, height, or the fact I am born as some ferocious killing machine." She then chuckles, "Well, okay, and I blame my lack of sight. Be nice to be able to see...well...to see in general. Believe it or not, but for those who did try to approach me found it difficult to relate or just function normally around me due to me just not able to see. Simple little gestures, well....obviously I can't read body language...whatever that looks like. I been told that most animals including the most wild of morphs use a lot of body language on top of vocalization. So...obviously, I would not last in the wild and was left behind. Heh, lovely. So I find making new friends is hard for a lot of reasons besides my physical appearance and stereotype associated with my species. Matter of fact, I think the tiny number of friends I did made was by accident. I tried to keep to myself really." During this time, her ears swiveled at the quiet noises that would be typical to the camera crew. At one point her face went side ways, listening to the hum of the camera, not 'looking' at the person she's talking to.
"Do you believe that people look down on you for your disability? We understand that you deal with blindness, and that has to complicate an already tough situation, does it not?"
"It does," Angela sighs. She then growls, "I have had people who wanted to pick on me try to sneak up on me, not realizing my other senses are very strong and well. Is it because it's typical of my kind or because I just learned to rely on them more? I am not sure. But it's frightening going into a new place I never been too and trying to remember how I got there. Many different scents do help, and feeling the area with my cane or hand to help associate those areas do help. But socializing? I hadn't figured it out yet. But it really does complicate things. Like I said earlier, some had tried to socialize with me, but most give up as fast as they start since they don't know how to deal with me."
"In your dream sort of interaction, what would be the best outcome for you when people meet you? What do you want them to feel when they meet Angela Thomas?"
Angela just looks away at first, giving a silly smile like she's blushing. She then turn to face the camera, though it's obvious her ears are aimed at Caylee, "Honestly, I never thought of it." She then shrugs, "Well, okay, I thought of it but knew it won't happen. And it's just me showing up, everyone just treats me like everyone else. Meet a few people, make some friends, maybe some love, who knows. Hehehe, I guess the fantasy is being close, petted, physical contact...pleasant, intimate. But hey, it's a dream, isn't? And I learned recently that just because I am getting positive physical contact doesn't mean I am getting the respect and consideration that I deserve." She then mumbles, "I am a person, not some fucking pet."
"That is well said, well said. Do most people you meet treat you as a pet? A curiosity? Do you have people that you are close to that can help with this?"
Angela sighs, then growls, "Most consider me as a pet since I am still not fully a citizen or even considered a person. Hence why I must wear this. I am told it's quite fugly." She then chuckles, "But hey, if it helps prevent me from being shot, I'll wear it. But yes, most consider me a pet. A dangerous, domesticated pet. And at times, even been told by some I am just a giant joke. Or even a giant threat. I think I only had one person curious about me. And he's...well...he's...he's a...oh what's a polite word for this?" She then gives a satisfied look, "Oh yeah, tool. As for people to help me on this? Not many. As of now, just two adults in my life."
"Do you think you'll see the day when morphs like you are going to be considered full citizens, and fully welcomed into society?"
"Too early to say," Angela growls, "Frankly, I fear even my own kind. So I really don't see that happening any time soon. Maybe if we have more like me being raised in society, maybe, don't know. But from what I dealt with so far, no. I'll be lucky if I even get honorary at this point." She says the last part, looking like she's upset as she folds her arms as she growls under her breath, "Cause pushing away a sex crazed tool is horrible for the likes of me."
"I can see. Do you think you will find other morphs of your kind? And have other morphs been kind to you at all?"
Angela chuckles, "Well, I met a few on the base working at the labs. They seem okay. But I never got to get close. As fast as they get assigned to the labs, the faster the labs put them elsewhere. At school, morphs are extremely scarce. Actually, met one in a class...seems to avoid me as much as the others. So obviously, I get equal treatment for avoidance. Heh, I do get along with one teacher who is a morph. Apparently the only staff member who's a morph, so...meeting morphs off the base is very scarce."
"Oh, that is a shame, well we are hoping that everything works out for you, definitely! What do you think about this Shandra Brown case? The raccoon morph with the human lover? That is definitely a current controversy."
Angela wiggles her whiskers, then snorts as she thought about it. She then smiles, "It's quite sad really. On a lot of levels. But the bond between the two is lovely. Her lover got arrested due to old laws not updated, topped with how morphs are still considered to be in the government eyes. It's all very unfair. Unfair to have him jailed but not her. Unfair to have all that focus in court on him and little on her. Even though it's essentially a case of the law seeing the human as corrupting an animal. So her input is mostly ignored. And at the core of this, sad that the concept of love between sapiens is considered a horrible thing all because of our physical forms are so foreign to another outside...well, just foreign really. I think too many worry about familiarity than not. Closer to the same, supposedly the better. Not sure why."
"Do you think some morphs get it better than others on this? Do you think if Shandra Brown was a different type of morph she would have had a better outcome?"
"As far as I can tell, no," Angela responded, "Other than me, I think all morphs are treated the same. So I think. Though I been told by some buddies online, some morphs do get better treatment. So I am only going off with what I know. I am told canines and felines get it better."
"Hopefully all of those situations would change. Do you envision that more people will reach out to you after this interview, to be your friend?"
"I could hope," Angela smiles.
"We can hope too."
