The Adventures of Lavender - The Astrolabe : Part 1 "The Astrolabe"
#1 of The Adventures of Lavender
A sci-fi adventure of Lavender in search of ancient secrets lost to her people long ago in her home galaxy.
The metal doors hissed as it slid open. A creature, around 7 ft tall, his frame was not human but walked upright and walked with purpose through the open doorway into the open circular room.
The sounds of metal clanging against each other filled the air as sparks flew emanating from the hard contact of the sickle swords as they clashed over and over.
"My goddess!" The tall black figure spoke. His voice was deep and raspy.
The center figure, in a flurry of spinning blades, turned violently to face the voice as the two figures knelt beside the center figure. Each of the creatures in the center of the room resembled that of the first. They were jackal like with long pointed snouts and even longer pointed ears that twitched toward any sort of sound. The center jackal held her weapons to the sides of herself now and had the point of a sickle sword inches away from their faces. Another figure was sitting on it's on the outskirts of the circle, away from the fighting and was watching intently.
"Speak." The center jackal began.
"Sorry to disturb you my Goddess but we have reports of the Astrolabe and it's whereabouts."
The center figure stood stone faced but her eyes betrayed her excitement.
"Go on." She said sternly again.
"We intercepted a transmission from another system, they are sending a single ship to obtain the device."
The center figured stepped closer, lowering her swords that she held one of in each hand. She was tall, covered in black fur, and pointed ears. Her body was adorned with jewels and chains made of priceless metals that's dropped over her body. Her chest was barely covered by the loosely hanging necklaces.
"Who else knows about this transmission?" She asked.
"I would assume everyone in the galaxy. The encryption was infantile. Easy to decode."
The female, with another flourish of her swords, sheathing her weapons and straightening her long white loin cloth around her waist, leaving her mid drift exposed."
"Then my dear Jala, we will have a little competition on this one then, no?"
"Yes my Goddess, but we will triumph over them. Our ships are much faster and our blades sharper. We will succeed at any cost."
"Of course we will and once we have the Astrolabe, the Anubites will transcend into the ultimate power. We will have all the races of the universe bend a new to the true rulers of the galaxy."
The girl went quiet for a moment before speaking again.
"Set a course, we mustn't delay."
"Yes my goddess, as you wish."
The three Anubites behind her began to chant.
"All hail Anutet, long live Anubis!"
Anutet turned to face the three jackals who were now silent.
"This shall be what we are remembered for. Once we unlock the secrets of the cube we will be unstoppable. Now go rest my zealots for you have an important assignment ahead. I wish that you were not wary."
"Yes goddess."
They said in unison as she walked toward them with an outstretched hand. Placing her many rings that she wore against each of the zealots lips to kiss before each got up and left the room without another word.
The medium sized ship shook as it fell out of its warp and glided peacefully through space. It was three days since Jala had intercepted the transmission and had finally reach their destination.
"My goddess, we have arrived in the Pandora 4 system. This is where they said it would be."
Jala said as Anutet came through the bridge doors.
"How can we be sure that it is here still? We have wasted too much time already. I need to be on the ground now!"
She was becoming impatient. Anutet never did well on these journeys as cabin fever plagued her regularly. Nothing in the holo decks or the constant sparing with the zealots was enough to keep her mind off of such a glorious prize.
"We should be on the ground in an hour, goddess." Jala said after typing a few codes into the ship's panels.
"If it takes an hour I will have your skull removed and dipped in gold to add it to my collection of incompetent pilots."
Anutet threatened before going to the 2nd level on the 3 level ship to prepare her landing gear as well as to inform the zealots.
For his sake, Jala was able to put the ship down onto the Erie red planet ealier than he first expected. As a dust storm had just kicked up, sending toxic soil and sand into the air.
The entire crew stood in the loading Bay. Each adorning their masks that covered their heads with a large visor they could see through. Two filters curled back like fangs along either side of the mask to keep the air they breathed safe.
"Our kinetic armor should keep us safe from the soil but you should wear something warmer, goddess Anutet."
Said one of the zealots confidently.
"This planet is hostile Narayan. It is not the dust I am concerned about."
Narayan was a thinner Anubite, his frame well conditioned from his years of service and adorned his sacred braids with the shimmer of amethyst clips and rings.
Each of the zealots wore a different color to represent their oaths that they took.
The others Malik and Trokten wore diamond and jades.
Each of the zealots were highly trained and fanatical, willing to lay down their life for the royalty of the world which made them excellent bodyguards and extremely deadly warrior.
The Anubites did not believe in long ranged weapons and refused to use them if they could. As they were against the use they were not ignorant to the fact that others would likely try to exploit this supposed weakness. Thus the kinetic armor system was created.
It was a simple looking device that was connected somewhere on the body. Most clipped it to belts, others shirts or even used to clip on cloaks. Once the device was attached it would emit an invisible shield around the wearer that would react to high amounts of kinetic energy and activate causing the shield to become hard and impenetrable, giving the wearer. This would also allow the Anubites to fight through the shield since their swords never reached the kinetic levels needed to activate the shield making it perfect for the melee fighters.
Anutet turned still wearing her loin cloth and ornate necklaces. Her voice sounding robotic as it played through the speaker in the mask.
"My body has gone The metal doors hissed as it slid open. A creature, around 7 ft tall walked with purpose through it, into the open circular room.

"Our kinetic armor should keep us safe from the soil but you should wear something warmer, goddess Anutet."
She turned still wearing her loin cloth and ornate necklaces. Her voice sounding robotic as it played through the speaker in the mask.
"My body has gone through a worse hell than a little cold weather."
The zealots and Jala were looking worried as they glanced at each other nervously before they began to remove their protective clothing and stood with Anutet in their loincloths so they would not be outdone by their leader.
"Jala, drop the loading Bay door." Anutet ordered as the bay door screamed to life as it lowered. It landed with a muted thud as it hit the fine dirt below.
The wind was piercing as they stepped out onto the red surface.
Their shields worked as expected. They did not believe in using rifles or any unskilled weapons but knew they needed to protect themselves. Thus their kinetics shields were born. A special electric field that would react to projectiles flying at high speeds and block them hitting their mostly bare bodies but leaving them free to use their melee weapons.
They five Anubites trekked through the storm, Anutet leading the way. The cold wind was unrelenting, drying out their skin underneath their short but coarse fur, even at some points tearing as their bodies tried to shrivel and protect itself from the harsh weather as they made their way toward the temple where the Astrolabe was said be located.
Luckily they we able to land close to the temple and made their way up the large stair case. They rushed through the large opening into the temple to get out of the harsh cold.
Inside the ceiling seemed to a go up forever, it wasn't clear how tall it was from the outside due to the storm but inside made no difference as it went dark before their was any sign of their even being a cap to the massive building.
They stepped further into the wide open room, one that looked as if it were a place of worship. Benches, chairs, and even old mats were thrown about and covered with dust, mold, creeping insects.
But there at the other end on the altar, as if being presented to the absent congregation was a circular device with metallic edges with a ball of white hot energy in the center with coursing lighting surround the ball that arched violently off the metal circle around it.
"There it is." Anutet said softly as she slowly approached the alter.
"After all these years after it disappeared.. After the last user wished to know it's knowledge, it is here, right here for me to take."
Suddenly a crash was heard behind Anutet, followed by a blood curdling screech. Anutet turned to see two of her loyal zealots standing over a heap of bleeding flesh.
"Wyverns?" Anutet asked as she glanced at the body. The two zealots nodded as the everyone drew their weapons.
"Yes but only the larva."
Wyverns were large bat like creatures with long necks and short stubby legs and chitin type armor when they were fully grown adults. They were excellent fliers and were well adapted to flying in extremely harsh conditions.
"They are looking to feed and it seems we are all that is on the menu." Jala added.
The group readied their swords as more screams were heard above them. Then a loud thud was heard, then another. The large hulking worm like beasts fell from the ceiling above and charged the Anubites with their jaws wide and rows of teeth outstretched.
The zealots charged back with Anutet just behind them. The Anubites curved swords made quick work of the soft fleshy skin of the large worms. But with each worm slain two more would drop from the ceiling.
The battle raged on. Dead Wyverns lay dead across the large stone floor creating barriers between the Anubites. Soon Narayan was cut off from the group and was surrounded. The larva surrounded him, slowly inching toward him as he glanced over to Anutet as he silently accepted his coming fate. He then dropped to his knees, his sword resting in his lap and his head drooped down and waited for the Wyverns to take him.
Suddenly one of the worms screeched at Narayan and lunged but missed!
He paid no mind to the writhing worm that slithered past him as the rest of the larva began to follow the first.
Their blind, Jala thought and quickly tapped Anutet on the arm. Mouthing the words to her as her eyes widened and looked back at Narayan on his knees.
Anutet stayed light on her feet as she kept over the slime trails the larva had left and clamped her hand over the Anubites muzzle, silencing him while forcing him to look at her. She mouthed the words to him as Jala explained before and he looked around as the larva were all spread out searching for the group.
Anutet put her finger to her lips as they all silently made their way to the alter. They stood quietly, the Astrolabe just a few feet from them now.
Suddenly a flash of light blinded them and they all turned away. When their eyes had stopped burning and they turned back to the Astrolabe.
There standing and holding the Astrolabe was a blue fox, about a few inches shorter than the Anubites.
"Hi!" The blue fox exclaimed excitedly. The Anubites froze except for Jala who was waving arms wildly trying to get her to shut up.
The blue fox just laughed.
"Your friend here is kind of silly." The blue fox added as she looked at the Anubites with amazement.
"You guys have cutest pointy ears!" She said again loudly. Her loud outburst was returned with a loud screech of one of the larva now heading their way toward the altar.
The blue fox, unafraid, and putting her hands on the Anubites shoulders using them to prop herself up . she could see into the large temple room. She saw the large white larva worm slithering toward the altar.
She gasped. "What is that!? It looks like a big slimy pillow!"
Anutet in desperation reached out and clamped the blue fox's muzzle shut with her paw.
"Shut..up." Anutet said as soft a she could.
"They are bad bugs but they can't see but they can hear you."
"Oohh" She said, her muzzle struggling to open in the Anubites grip.
The blue fox clamped her jaws shut and shimmied out of the Anubites grip and looked around.
"Well.." She began in a hushed tone. "I need to get going. Someone is waiting for me to bring this to them."
She flashed them a quick smile and a wave.
"Bye new friends!"
Then the blue fox zapped away in another flash of light, burning the eyes of the Anubites again. Anutet growled loudly as she rubbed her eyes.
Only to hear it answered by a shriek, but it sounded bigger coming from the darkness up above.
