Coran: Prologue

Coran shivered in the cool night air. The short brown otter just wasn't equipped with the right kind of fur for this weather. He felt colder than most would, despite the blazing fire in front of him. It lit the trees with a dim, warm glow, illuminating the space around the camp as well, separating it from the rest of the dark, quiet forest. The light didn't help to warm him though, and he rubbed his own shoulders in a last ditch effort to keep warm. He wanted nothing more than to go to bed, but he was standing watch as his partner, Condor, slept in his box. The sergal had refused to sleep anywhere else. At least Coran had put a tent over it so Condor wouldn't be cold. They'd been traveling around for a while now, all in a search for his sister. Coran sighed, but silently. Would they ever find her? It pained him to see his mate so sad. The thought of his warm, soft bed came into his mind as he stared down at the fire. But what of Condor? He thought suddenly. The sergal hadn't even brought a blanket to his box. Coran stood up to retrieve one. The otter had no wish to let his mate freeze. He stopped at the crate they were in. a few extra couldn't hurt, right? He ended up grabbing about four, and moved to the sergal's box, laying them on his mate one by one before returning to the fire. A cold night indeed, he thought to himself. Perhaps he really should go to bed now. He'd promised to wake Condor up, but he figured the sergal could use some sleep. He'd lost his sister after all. He got up, dousing the fire and going to his tent. It was at least a little warmer in here. He lay down in his bed, still fully dressed. He drifted, letting the events that had brought them here play out in his mind once more...
