Overdue company "You're missing the point doctor. I'm not asking you to clear your whole schedule just to work on Johnny, I'm just asking if you can move his surgery up a day or two. He needs all the help we can give him." I suggest to the lengthy gray fox speeding down the lit hall. He just won't listen to reason. My friend's life is at stake here. "I understand that this patient is a good friend of yours, but I can't go moving things around as favors, otherwise everyone would be asking the same." The doctor replied keeping his current pace. "He's not just a friend, He's a survivor of a major first assault against an enemy we know very little about, just think about the information he could have." Which may or may not be true, I'm pretty sure the only thing Johnny was thinking during the battle was crap, crap, crap, crap how do I get out of here. He was never the most observant person especially under extreme pressure. " Mr. Anthony" he said making sure to Stress the whole name. "There are hundreds of survivors, each with their own point of view, and information is very poor motivation for me. I'm sorry but that is just the cruel fact of the situation. My main priority is to save as many as I can in an organized fashion as to avoid anarchy during this time of war." As he finished his last statement the both of us entered one of the identical recovery rooms of the building. This one was nothing special, standard white floors, off white painted walls, sink, counter, tiny bathroom, and a bed with a multi-use life support system beside it. The unexpected thing was to see its usual occupant, a bandaged up young adult hound dog, staring back at us with a big grin on his face. "Well your ugly mug wasn't exactly the first face I was hoping on seeing." Johny said the whole time holding back a laugh. I return his comment with an even bigger smile. "Ya freakin retard, I'd punch ya in the gut, if I didn't think doing that would make ya black out again." I say in a playfully manner, going with the banter. I run up to his bed side and embrace him gently yet firmly. "I wasn't sure if you would make it there for a while. You've been out for close to two and a half weeks now." With that his eyes widened filled with confusion. It seems like we are the first to see him awake. "what's the matter Johnny?" I ask. "Nothing, It's just that... The last thing I remember was this gorgeous women cradling me in her arms, Then blinking and poof I'm here. To be honest I was kinda hoping to still be in her arms when I woke." That figures. He didn't even notice the group of five or so other medics around him pumping him full of adrenelin and blood. All he cared about was the one girl. "Well passing out is pretty common after you've had your upper intestines, afew arteries, and a lung shishkabobed by a Greever lance. Once again, it's a miracle you survived." Almost immediately after I finish that thought, Doctor Smith grabbs my shoulder and pushes me tward the door, and started talking to Johnny. "Wonderfull that you are feeling better Mr. Tolman. Now if you wouldn't mind we have just afew tests to perform to make sure everything is going well." Once again this doctor has reminded me that I'm not his biggest fan around here. " Hey I'll see ya tommarow Johnny, take it easy." I manage to say before the doctor again ushers me out the door. "see ya kalvin." A box full of Cinderblocks Let me just take a moment now to say afew words about what is going on before we continue. I believe that I have left you in the gray about this world long enough. Life for the souls of the people you are learning about now is very different from what you see as normal. First off, If you haven't already figured it out, The people that live in this world are animals, I don't mean that in a reference to there life style or sex lives, though that doesn't mean it's not true. I literally mean they are animals. All sorts of dogs, cats, horses, bulls, birds, if it breaths its here. Each stands on two legs like a human, talk like a human, even sits, dances, pays the bills like any old smow in your world. But that doesn't mean it's a world of pixies, fairies, trolls, and gnomes either. Instead this is a land of complex political systems ready to fall, and simple towns almost like clans making a rise in its wake. It's not a primitive world, but a world with primitive views. By this I mean that beastkind has gone so far as to send ships into orbit, but back on earth countries are still fighting for the right to new lands, and not so new lands. It seems that here the technology has advanced past the maturity of the rulers of the world. For instance, about 20 or so years ago two kingdoms where thrown into war because the son of that northern kingdoms ruler was tripped by a southern guard. He did not fall and die, he didn't even get mildly scuffed up. He just fell over. And because of that the king had that solder executed, and well, it all went downhill from there. The strangest part is that the people support this action. There is always this blind patriotism that runs through the people everywhere. Even if they claim a pile of mud in a swam as their home, It's their pile of mud. Warfare is different from place to place. Some people use guns and cannons, others bombs and tanks. But as it was mentioned in the start of this story, there are some we are learning now that prefer a more traditional form of home defense. To catch you up to date in the shortest amount of time I will briefly explain who this mystery enemy is that has assailed our lady loving friend. They are known as the Grevieran empire. As the geography of where you would find them they would be on the North western part of a traditional map. A Green land full of hills, vallies, and large lakes scattered across the fertile ground. Which has made this land a constant target for invasion from anyone willing to spare some solders. It sounds like aside from the invasions, this might be a good place to settle into. But before you start making plans to go house hunting, you should know about the increasingly harsh winters, unpredictable sink holes across the land, and savage natives that continue to fight for the rights to there lands. What, still interested in moving? Alright you have fun with that. In the meantime, let me continue. This people has found a way to defend themselves that has lasted threw out the ages. With sword and shield, bow and sling, metallic armor, and all manner of war machines. It is a strange contrast to the world you live in now. How can you send men into a gun fight with sticks and stones you may ask? By coting the sticks with C4, and the stones with deadly gas. The truth about these people is that they may fight in an old fashion, but they do it with a deadly and modern twist. Normally a peaceful people they have now turned bitter tward the people of Kenereth. The two kingdoms made a rather large agreement to trade weapons from Kenereth for gold. But on the first delivery the Greveran opened their crates to find nothing but cinder blocks. After, political reasoning turned to harsh slander as the relations grew worse and worse till the time came for the first major confrontation. Which brings us to our dazed friend sitting in bed with a large hole in his chest. What a strange world, but I suppose what is normal when looking into another person's reality? Discussing war over coffee "You wouldn't believe how many women join the army! Training camp was the best time of my life, I mean think about it. Out there on the training ground nothing to do but show off your amazing bod and watch the bounce of the lady cadets melons dance to the drill sergeants command." Horney bastard as always. I had been listening to Johnny go on about how great the army was for about an hour. A sad attempt to get me to try and join. "Did you forget that you almost died just a month ago?" I say trying to get some sense into his one track mind. "Well I guess that's a down side, but think of all the benefits!" He readjusts in his booth seat, then took a sip of his steaming cup of coffee. "Well I'm sorry Johnny but I am not nearly as, what's the right word, oh ya, obsessed about girl as you. You know there's better ways to get layed then fighting some war." I say "Do you hear yourself? Some war, this isn't just some war. This is us fighting for the pride of our country, and defending our honor and people. Plus the girls back home are ok, but all the hot girl are joining the force." He finishes his statement with an air of pride in his voice, mixed with blind obsession. "Dude, you're such a creep." I say in a half joking manor. He just gives me a "guilty as charged" shrug then sipps from his cup again. "Your hopeless." I say as I shake my head in defeat. A loud click of a microphone preps everyone for another announcement from the city officers. The preemptive sound is muffled but understandable threw the café glass. "Attention all personnel, prepare for a glass breaker raid, I repeat, Prepare for a glass breaker raid." Theirs an air of practiced urgency in the café as the patrons move hastily toward a not so hidden bunker at the back of the room. The both of us get out from our stalls, and make our way past several other stalls, already emptied, to a safe room in the basement. The entrance is crowded by several others trying to make their way down a few steps. We shuffler our way through, then find a place against the wall to sit by. As the last of the café patrons find their way in, the heavy metal hatch is closed then like a safe is screwed shut by what can only be the store manager, by the look of his uniform. Dark for a moment, until the generator fires up, and air is filtered into the room. It feels cool and dry, and doesn't help with the chills I already have now. Any kind of Raid is never a great experience, but glass breakers where my least favorite. Thousands of boulders flung at us from miles away each meant to break on impact knocking out walls, windows, anything to make way for the next part. Once the stone settles it becomes toxic, releasing a vile fume that inflates the insides, choking a man on the inside. My worst fear is that one day our filters in these bunkers will break. That is the most frightening thought to me. Why is it that the only thing keeping us from death is a single air filter? It doesn't seem right. "I'll admit it, this was never a highlight of being in the force either." Johnny says trying to defuse the tension. "Thank you captain obvious." I say. The distraction did work for a moment, taking my attention off of the terror that awaited. Until it started that is. The first sound was deafening even from in the concrete bunker. It must be what living next to a volcano with rocks shooting onto your roof sounds like. That's the closest I can compare it to. Two more, four, ten. Now a continual cadence of death sounded loudly outside. I have never met a man who wasn't completely unnerved by this thunderous wave. It lasted only a moment, and yet it felt like hours, the fight must be outside the city now. It will still be an hour before the city filters clean the toxin from the air. Assuming they weren't taken out by the storm just now. "Glad that's over." Johnny says. "ya, over." I mumble. He nudges me. "Come on man cheer up, we'll live to goof around another day." I look at him and give a soft smile. He's an optimistic one that's for sure. "how can I be happy when I'm stuck here with you for another hour." I say jokingly. I will act like it was nothing, but on the inside, the fear always takes something out of me.
