Jill then

Jill hid in the linen closet behind the spare blankets and pillows on the tall second shelf, wafting with house dust and fabric softener, I'm never going to school, ever again, I'll run away.

She held her fully packed little suitcase she found at the thrift store, when mommy took her to get dress-up clothes. Everything she could need tucked inside, she got her special blanket, her dolly, a dress and the money from monopoly, in case she needed to buy anything.

Mommy moved around the house, She's probably worried sick about me, and she should be, trying to make me go to school tomorrow.

"I can't make them stop, and mommy wasn't there," She said nuzzling her Ratwoman dolly, mommy's lavender leave in conditioner made it even more reassuring to have, "If I was like you I'd have been fast enough and smart enough to do something."

Her tummy rumbled, Running away is hard. Maybe I can sneak out and get a snack then go back to running away.

Mommy walked closer to the closet, while on the phone, "Yes, hello again, this is Jill's mom."

She hid under one of the blankets heart pounding in her ears incase mommy opened the door.

"Yes, I still need to speak with the principal... it does matter that it happened at the park and not at the school... no they were your students and shouldn't have been off campus, that's why you can't dismiss this issue," Mommy trailed off as she moved away.

She sat tracing a nail along the Paisley swoops of her hiding sheet, as her racing heart gentled.

"Mommy's not even looking for me, she doesn't love me," She said and grabbed the suitcase. She slipped out from the blankets and peaked out the door. Mommy wasn't nearby so she ran to the kitchen. Her pink dress billowed out, she threw the hem back like a cape, "Nawt NAH, Ratwoman."

She pulled a stool out from the peninsula counter top, and climbed up. She walked across the counter to the cupboard, where mommy kept the cereal in then grabbed the fruit loops.

While she climbed down daddy came into the kitchen, "Hey sweet pea, having some cereal?"

She scrambled to the floor hiding the suitcase from daddies view, "daddy you're home?"

"Yeah my day opened up so I thought I'd see my favorite girl," Daddy said then took some smoked salmon dip from the fridge.

She held her doll under the big cereal box a third her height, "You came for me?"

"Yeah it was your first day of school and that means you're a big girl now, I want to hear all about it. I'm making a bowl of dip and pita chips do you want one too?"

"A bowl all my own, yes please daddy," She said pushing her suitcase against the counter, with the cereal in front, "Ratwoman didn't get to go daddy she had to stay home. Can I stay too?"

"Oh then you can tell us both about it," Daddy said making a bowl with chips piled to one side, "So what do you think of school? And wouldn't you miss your friends if you don't go with them?"

"It was boring and I don't want to go back, home is better."

"What did you do at school that wasn't fun?"

"I got to meet everyone, Paul and I met a nice Sheep Timmy, he's coming to Paul's birthday. We played super heroes, but we couldn't play on the recess field, we had to hide."

"Why did you do that honey," Daddy asked a frown creasing his face.

"Because there was only one teacher outside and she was watching kickball," She said taking the savory salmon dip bowl daddy offered her.

"Someone made you scared honey?"

"Yeah, what's a mule daddy?"

The bowl daddy started spooning dip into dropped with a glass thunk, then he said, "Wellbeing short has a few benefits I guess."

"That was loud." She said.

He collected the unbroken bowl, then said, "honey it's a name people use to make fun of people that can't have a baby. Many hybrid mommies can't have a baby and need to adopt."

"I'm not old enough to be a mommy," She said, setting the cereal box on its side and putting the dip on it. She picked it all up using the cereal box as a platter.

"That's very true, honey, where are you going?"

"I need to get back to running away, so mommy won't make me go to school tomorrow."

"I see, where are you running away too?"

"The closet, don't tell mommy," She said conspiratorially.

"I won't honey, is it cause of the bullies that you don't want to go to school," Daddy asked grabbing her suitcase.

"Yes, they pushed me in the mud, now moms on the phone and wants me to go back to school."

"You liked school when there aren't bullies right, and you and Paul want to go together?"

"I do, but right now I'm running away," She said walking down the hall with daddy in tow. Mommy still spoke on the phone in the living room.

"Ok, let me know if you want me to read with you." Daddy said getting the linen closet door.

"I will daddy." She said setting her cereal platter on the left side of the second shelf next to the blanket and pillow fort she made. She climbed onto the shelf and settled in the corner.

Daddy knelt to pass her the suitcase, then said, "you know those bullies won't always be there, you are a better person honey not trying to fight."

"I know what to do daddy, when I'm all growed up I'll be a real mommy and have my own baby no adoption," She said.

"Ok honey I love you."

"I love you too daddy, close the door... no wait hugs?"

Daddy opened the door and hugged her with a kiss on her forehead then turned on the closet light and shut the door.

"I'll be a real mommy, the best there ever was," She said eating some dip and crackers.

"Honey, is she still there," Mommy asked.

"Yeah I think she's ok, she just had a rough day," Daddy said.

"They pushed her Edwin, I just can't believe the school isn't shocked... I mean the things they said." Mommy said.

"I know honey, but she seems more worried that you don't care, lets just keep her focused on getting to be with her friends, or do you want to homeschool?"

"You know I can't... Counselors, you are so good at calming me down into a corner." Mommy said.

"That's how I got to you to marry me." Daddy said

"Shhh Ratwoman, I'm listening, maybe daddy well get mommy to be teacher."
