Greener Pastures Chapter 7
In this chapter Banit learns of Christmas and hits a big milestone. Y'all need to read this to find out what though.
Chapter 7
The Intruder known as Santa Claus...
December 16, 1891
Yesterday was beautiful. Banit got her acceptance letter. We didn't have time for an actual celebration but we cheered and congratulated her and I treated her to a nice dinner. Lilly and Bobby were very happy about it and hugged her. Lilly nearly cried for her. I'm so relieved and happy for her as well. I remember how nerve wracking it was for me. I can only imagine how it was for her. Especially considering that she's only been speaking English for less than a year and only had a couple of months of actual education. I told Banit how impressed I was with her over that. She corrected me. She said that there was a young man in her tribe that was educated and he taught a tribal school on the reservation. They didn't speak English there but they had regular lessons there. I'm still impressed. She worked very hard to get where she is. I can't wait to see what she becomes.
Today is Wednesday, so it was a regular school day for Lilly and Bobby. So, they're off to school as usual. I just realized that Christmas is only a week away. That means that I need to do some shopping and we've got some decorating to do. Since Banit is taking a break I'll ask her for some help. I have no idea what to get everyone. This is the worst part of Christmas. I don't mind spending the money. I just can't figure out what everyone wants. I'll think of something.
Banit is ecstatic to go shopping with me. I'll buy her something while we're out as a congratulatory gift. I told her what we're doing. She doesn't know much about Christmas this is going to be her first one. I gave her a basic explanation and told her what we do. I also said that since she's part of the family that she gets to participate as well. She lit up, smiled and hugged me as hard as she could. We agreed that today we'll focus on getting Lilly and Bobby straightened out.
For Lilly, since she's grown her dress no longer fits her. Therefore we're taking it to Mrs. Young to see if she can adjust it. She loved that dress and she hardly had a chance to wear it. I hope she can let it out enough to fit her again. Lilly was so skinny and short then. She's filled out a little and has gotten taller since, she's still skinny though.
Mrs. Young said that she needs to take new measurements. I'll have to think of some excuse to get her in there without her realizing what's going on. She also suggested that I look into getting her a corset. I think she's still too young for that. She's only fourteen and she doesn't really need one either. I'll talk to Ma about that before I go and do something rash in either direction. Banit however took interest in the one Mrs. Young had her try on. It really looked good on her. They say that no lady's outfit is complete without one. I may get Banit one or two. She's old enough and frankly could use the help to give her some curves. Right now she looks like a tall skinny ten year old boy. While we were there we looked at some other dresses and things. I picked out a couple of nice ones for Lilly. One a flashy one for her to perform in, the other is a frilly one for her to wear around town. I think she'll like them both.
From there we went down to the toy store. We picked out several toys for Bobby and a couple of games. While we were looking around we found some lace and things for dolls. I bought some. I think Lilly would like to dress up her doll more often. We then headed out to Mr. Harcourt's. We talked for a long while and I bought some pants and a couple of shirts for Bobby. He's outgrowing the ones he currently has. We had to leave so that we could hide the gifts before the kids returned from school. I told Banit that we don't let anyone see them until they open them on Christmas Eve. She thought that was a fun idea.
We hid most of the gifts up in the attic, the rest I hid in my other usual hiding places. We finished in time to relax in the living room before they walked in. They were both excited and disappointed that Friday is the last day before winter break. We quickly finished their homework and Bobby sat to watch the front door. He said that his friends are meeting up here before they go off to play. First one to arrive was Charlie. She greeted me, "Hiya Mistah!" She then saw Lilly and Banit and said, "Hiya Sissy an' Birdy. Y'all playin' dress up or sompin'?" She kept prattling on so fast that no one could answer her. Bobby took the back of her head in one hand and placed the other over her mouth. He said, "Too fast, too much" she smiled and replied, "sorry". Bobby quietly went about his business. He needed to put up his books and change his clothes. Charlie followed him never more than a footstep or two away. He kicked her out when he changed clothes. She stood by the door and waited for him. She looked down at us, waved and smiled that big toothy grin. She's missing her front two teeth. She's a handful but she's fun. Once Bobby had changed they came and sat on the couch. Charlie sat down nearly in his lap. It's so obvious that she's in love with him it's painful. Bobby just calmly accepts her though. I don't know if he's taking a cue from me about letting girls cuddle up and get close or what, but it's funny. He looked like a tiny playboy. We sat and talked about their day for about half an hour when Will and the Warren boys finally showed. Sam Warren's left ear is still only half erect. I guess Ben hit it so much that it won't stand up properly. They quickly ran off to go play. After they left Lilly said "Charlie's in love with Bobby. She's so cute!" I couldn't help but laugh. She's right. Charlie is cute. I love her to death. I can usually count on her for a good laugh. Sometimes though I can't tell if she's an idiot or not. I still laugh that her parents practically beg Bobby to stay over with them.
We finally stopped laughing and joking about Bobby and Charlie's relationship when there was a knock on the door. It was Edgar Mearns. I invited him in but he refused. He asked for my help. Of course I was willing to help. He was a bit embarrassed. He said that they're trying to stand up the first of the outer walls but they can't lift it and hold it up at the same time. I looked and saw what they were trying to do. So I suggested that they build a small support off of the inside of the wall to hold it up until they can get an adjoining wall up as well. He had a look like he was struck with genius. So I helped build the two supports and together we stood the wall up. It stood perfectly in place. I tied a rope to it and to a stake on the far side of the foundation to keep the wall from falling backwards. We then got the second wall up and situated. Once fastened, he thanked me and said that they could get it from there. They really do want to build this on their own as much as possible. I told them that if they need help to just ask. We left them and went home to get dinner started. Banit wanted to cook tonight. That's great, I love her cooking. I don't know what it is but it is good. We had fairly typical evening of games, reading, and discussing the events of the day.
December 17, 1891
Ma's off today and so she's dragging me off to shop with her this morning. I guess this means that I can get Banit's dress figured out. I'll also talk to her about what Mrs. Young said.
Our first stop was of course the toy store. She bought Bobby a lot of toys and a few things for Lilly's dolls. From there we went by Mrs. Young's shop. Like me, Ma was against Lilly getting a corset. That is until Mrs. Young said that it would add a nice flash to her show dresses. Ma thought about it and said that she can have one but it'll only be for her show and only if she can still sing while wearing it. I'll have to bring Lilly by and get her measured. While we were out I kept my eye on things that Ma showed interest in. I didn't have much luck. We did however manage to pick out a nice dress for Banit. It's not as flashy as Lilly's Christmas dress but it is still very beautiful. It's a sleeveless wine colored dress with a white ruffled petticoat and a bow on the right shoulder strap. It is very nice. We finished up and left. Ma shooed me away. Guess that means that she's planning on shopping for me. I left and figured I'd wait on Lilly to come home so that I can trick her into coming with me to get measured.
I lounged around for a while until the kids came home. We finished their last homework of the year and Bobby ran out to play. I asked Lilly to come with me to Mrs. Young's to help me pick out a dress for Banit. She lit up. She loves this kind of thing. We hurried over and in the process of showing her what I picked out Mrs. Young managed to sneakily measure her. I don't think Lilly even noticed. Lilly liked the dress I picked out for Banit and offered a couple of suggestions. Namely some extra padding in the bust, Banit is fairly lacking there. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it would help fill out her figure some. I tried to leave but Lilly was so enthralled with fashion this and fashion that, I ended up leaning back in a chair and fell asleep much to the chagrin of Lilly. I like Mrs. Young's shop it always smells so nice in there.
We finally returned home. I'll have to return tomorrow and pay for the alterations and for the other things I bought. We had the usual evening and went to bed.
December 18, 1891
Ma wanted to sleep in this morning so Banit and I walked the kids to school. We shopped around a little but didn't find anything. We were hoping to find something for Ma. She's so hard to buy gifts for. We were headed home for lunch when we saw a crowd gathered at the front of our house. We hurried over to find out what happened. Some jackass tried to break in. He kicked open the backdoor and was helping himself to our things. Ma caught him. Poor bastard didn't stand a chance. She threw him off the second floor balcony into the street. Broke both of his legs, Ma didn't stop there though. She ran out in her nightgown and pummeled him. It took six of us to pull Ma off of him. It would be near impossible to tell who this was. There wasn't much left of him. Someone had called for the doctor. I was surprised to find that he survived. He won't have much of a life after this, if he lives. Ma was furious! I've never seen her this mad before. This was something different. She wouldn't get this mad if he was only stealing things. It took several hours to calm her down enough to get the story out of her. I understood then. That man ripped apart one of the few photographs of Pa that we have, just so that he could steal the gilded frame. It was one of Ma's favorites. It was when they had first moved into this house. He might have stood a chance had he removed the photograph first. It's going to be a long while before Ma's up to working. I asked Banit to go tell the Girls at the pasture that they're on their own until tonight and that I'll come help as soon as I can. There's only a couple of things that'll calm Ma down, killing him or drinking. I opened what's left of my private stash. She finished it off. I had to slow her down to keep her from drinking too much. By the time the kids were home Ma had drunk herself asleep. I managed to get her into her bed. I told Lilly and Bobby what happened and advised them to leave Ma alone for now. Lilly asked if she was singing tonight. I thought about it and decided that she should. I'll be taking over for Ma. Banit volunteered to watch Bobby and Ma. I hope she can handle her. I told her what to do and gave her another bottle in case things got out of hand.
At The Pasture, things weren't much better. Word of Ma staying home had spread and so things were wild. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I took a slapjack to man that tried to feel up Joey. Knocked him out emptied his wallet and threw him out into the street. I yelled out that anyone that lays a finger on any of the staff is going to dealt a heavy hand. One man tried to challenge me. A big Clydesdale horse stood towering over me. He never saw what hit him, and hit him several times. Things settled down after that and the rough crowd that tried to move in left. Once they were gone I had Lilly come out and start her show. It was a bit late and we lost most of our spectators but once people saw that this is still a respectable place the good ones will come back.
Banit said that Ma woke up hungry and so she fixed her a light dinner. Afterwards she was very mopey and has been holding Bobby ever since. I looked in to find that Ma indeed was holding on to Bobby and had fallen asleep. Bobby was trying to escape but was being suffocated in her chest. I helped free him. I thought that he'd be mad or embarrassed but no. Instead he pulled the blankets up around her and looked at her with pity. Ma would hate to see that. She'd be so mad. Bobby went to bed after that. I stayed up to try and repair the picture and frame. I couldn't do a very good job but maybe I can take it to the photography studio and have him fix it.
Post Script: What a day...
December 19, 1891
I woke up early today. I have a lot to do. I hurried over to the photographer's studio and asked him if he could repair the photograph. He said that it wouldn't be perfect but that he can get it close. I asked him to do his best. Then he reminded me of the wedding pictures I ordered. I had completely forgotten about them and so I went ahead and picked them up. I thanked him and left.
I spent the rest of the morning repairing the door as best I could. It'll need replacing sometime soon but this will hold until then. I had no sooner finished than I heard a squawk from upstairs. I ran up to find that Ma had caught Banit and was pulling her down to cuddle with her. I started to free her but Banit stopped me and said that she'll be alright. If she says so, I'm sure Ma would be glad to have her there. I left them and spent the rest of the day cleaning and picking things up. I had sent Lilly and Bobby off to go play. Banit cooked dinner again. I have no idea what I'm eating but it is really good! The smell woke Ma and lured her downstairs. She was hungry and ate a lot. I made mention that this is one of the rare times we all get to sit down and eat together other than on Thursday. That seemed to cheer Ma up some and so instead of heading upstairs to bed she sat on the couch and we all talked while Lilly got her things ready. I told Ma to stay home tonight, that I'll take care of things for her. She started to complain but realized that she's in no condition to work. Banit and Bobby offered to stay and take care of her. That seemed to embarrass Ma a bit. Luckily Lilly had great timing and came down. We then walked to The Pasture.
The show was great tonight. I had to clear out a couple of troublemakers but most left on their own accord when I forced one man to pick his teeth up off the floor. After that it was fairly quiet. Alice's fan club got a special treat when she personally thanked them for helping her with an "exuberant" fan. I found out that Lilly has a fan club as well. I'm fine with it so long as they keep their distance, so far though they seem respectful and polite. I had Lilly announce that The Greener Pasture will be closed from the 23rd through the 26th. That got a few complaints but a bit less than what I thought it would. I imagine that fights would have broken out if I had made that announcement. After the show I walked Lilly home before returning to close. I've always walked Lilly home I didn't know that once she leaves that most of the patrons leave as well. The rest of the night was calm and quiet.
I was finishing up when I found a letter from Cora. Joey said that it came yesterday but that she'd forgotten about it. I'll take it to Ma and give it to her in the morning.
Post Script: It's very quiet this early in the morning.
December 20, 1891
I woke up late today. I actually slept though Church. I'm surprised no one woke me for it. I got myself cleaned up and dressed before everyone returned. Ma was in a much better humor. Lilly and Banit were discussing songs. Lilly promised Banit that she'd teach her some Christmas carols. I've never heard Banit sing. I wonder what she sounds like. We had lunch then and Bobby was quickly out the door to go play. That reminded me of something I've wanted to do for a while now. I filtered through the wedding photographs and found a nice one of Bobby in his tuxedo. I took it and headed out in search of Charlie.
I first stopped by the Bancroft house. Frank and Charlotte said that they didn't know where the kids were but that they headed off towards the general store. I found them there playing in the empty lot next to Mr. Harcourt's store. I also found Mr. Harcourt running around playing with them. He's such a big kid. I then found myself joining in their games. We stopped for a break and I took the opportunity to give Charlie the picture. Her eyes lit up and she hugged me tightly. When the others tried to see what it was she quickly hid it in her blouse. Mr. Harcourt looked confused as well so I told him what it was. "Oh, ho ho ho! Is that so?" he laughed. Charlie blushed and hid her face. We laughed and laughed. I talked with Mr. Harcourt for a while longer before leaving. He said that he was going to stay to play and tease them some more. That's Mr. Harcourt for you right there! I left and headed over to see Mrs. Young.
Mrs. Young said that she's finished with the dresses and was finishing the corsets for Banit and was about to get started on the one for Lilly. She said that they should be ready by tomorrow. I thanked her and headed next door to Dutchy's. He had long since finished Bobby's new outfit. Strangely he didn't hang on my like he normally does. He said that he is very busy and hasn't had a wink of sleep in a week. I almost feel sorry for him but he actually loves this kind of thing. I picked up Bobby's things and headed home. I made sure to hide them well.
I heard Lilly up in their room teaching Banit some songs. Banit has a good voice but nothing special. I wonder if Lilly knows that we'll be going caroling again this year.
Ma is feeling much better. She's still a bit upset but she's getting over it. We spent the rest of the day milling about the house getting things cleaned up and setting out some of the decorations. Perhaps we should have a decorating party like we did last year. That was a lot of fun and things turned out beautifully.
December 21, 1891
Ma got up early this morning feeling good. She made us a large breakfast and we pulled out the rest of the decorations. I asked Lilly if she thought her friends would like to come over and help us decorate like last year. She lit up. She asked Ma if that would be alright and Ma said, "Of course! The more the merrier!" Lilly hurried out to find them. I asked Banit to find Grace and Nessa and see if they'd like to help as well. Ma stood up and said, "Well ifin' we're makin' this a party, I reckon we'll be needin' some refreshments." Ma tried to act like she was being put out but it was clear to all that she loved the thought of a full house. We got Bobby working on drawing some pictures and other such decorations. It wasn't long when there was a knock on the door. If it was Lilly or Banit they'd just come in. I checked only to find Charlie standing there looking sad. She said that she made her mother mad and was told to leave and not come back until dinner. I laughed. I told her that she could help us if she behaves. She gave me that big toothy grin of hers, her front two teeth are coming in by the way, and thanked me saying, "Thank ya Mistah! Thanks a lot!" She joined Bobby at the table making decorations. We'd just gotten her settled when there was a scream out front. I ran out and saw that Nessa was standing there holding Lilly cuddling her. She apparently scared Lilly. This could be interesting.
We had a great impromptu party. Lilly and her bunch were busy either popping corn or threading it on a string. They sounded like a bunch of old hens. Grace and Nessa were hanging all of the high decorations when they mentioned the tree. How could I forget the tree! I quickly ran off in search of one. Luckily I found a beautiful tree. The man at the yard said that they had just come in this morning so they are fresh and should last a long time. I paid him and hurried home. I was on my way past the Mearns house when I saw them busy working on their house. I invited them over, although they declined, I told them it's an open offer until we finish. I returned with the tree and got it set in place. I no longer had it up that the girls were decorating it. Nessa, being the tallest one here, had the honor of hanging all of the high ornaments. Things were going so smoothly until there was a big crash. Banit had tripped while carrying a bowl of popped corn. It went everywhere. Everyone laughed and laughed. Nessa lifted Banit up off the floor and hugged her. We set about cleaning it up. Banit was somewhat upset until we told her it wasn't a problem. Honestly I'm surprised that that's all that happened. We got back to our decorations when there was a knock at the door again. It was Edgar and Elle Mearns. I welcomed them in and introduced everyone. They were a bit shy at first but quickly warmed up to everyone and even the grumpy Edgar looked like he was having fun. They took a liking to Charlie. There was a fuss over at the table. Nessa had seen some of the ornaments and found some scrap paper. She had folded it up into something that looked like Santa Claus. She gave it to Bobby to color in. It was a hit. Soon we had dozens of little paper Santa Clauses decorating the house. She also made several stars and other things. We hung most on the tree but we also used them everywhere we could. We had hung all of our decorations leaving the star for the tree last. We drew lots to pick who would get to place the star. Bobby won, but he asked Charlie to do it for him. She hugged him and took the star. I lifted her up but we're only a few inches shy of being high enough. Nessa stood up and took Charlie by the waist. She lifted her up and had to stretch to reach. They had almost gotten it when Nessa started tipping over. I grabbed her waist and pulled her back. That was all she needed and the three of us were able to place the star. It had gotten quite late by then. Ma invited everyone to stay and have dinner. The Mearns declined, they said they had plans for the evening. Everyone else stayed. I had Charlie run home and tell her parents though. They gave her some clothes. I think they mistook dinner for staying the night. Well whatever, I don't mind and Ma's happy enough not too either. Once we finished dinner Ma had to hurry off to work. I stayed home to watch the kids. Banit asked Grace and Nessa to stay over as well. They agreed. I figured that Lilly and her bunch would stay as well but they had to leave. Lilly saw them out while the rest of us hashed out where we'll be staying. I figured that I'd let Charlie sleep with Bobby and let the girls double up. It'd be crowded but doable. Lilly didn't mind sleeping with Banit or Grace but they didn't think that Nessa would fit on their beds. She'd fit on mine though so we put her in there with Charlie. Bobby and I would sleep in the living room. That was the plan anyways.
We were relaxing and enjoying the decorations when Banit asked who the man in the red suit is. The kids looked at her like she was crazy. Almost in unison they said, "You don't know who Santa Claus is?" That scared Banit a bit. I laughed and told them to take it easy on her. We gathered around and told her about Christmas and what everything meant. We even told her the legend about Santa Claus. I don't think she understood the Santa part. She summarized him by saying, "So, he's a big man in a red suit that intrudes into peoples houses to leave gifts for good children and he knows that they are good because he watches them? Why isn't he in jail?" Grace and I nearly died laughing. Nessa had to think about it for a while but even she started laughing. The kids didn't find that funny. We sat around telling Christmas stories until late. Bobby and Charlie had fallen asleep and Lilly was fading fast. We called it a night after that. Nessa carried Charlie upstairs to my room while the others went to Lilly and Banit's room. I took care of Bobby and let him sleep on the couch. I wanted to stay up and write this so I took a candle over to the writing desk and got started. I'm still writing as I have something else to say. I was a few minutes into writing when I heard a noise from behind me. It was Charlie. She was nearly naked except for her panties. She climbed in and slept with Bobby who quietly scooted over to let her sleep on the inside of the couch. Nessa came down to look for her but stopped when she saw them. She smiled at me and went back upstairs. I checked on them and saw that Charlie was smiling.
Post script: Ma accidentally woke me as she came in. She was tired but I had to show her Bobby and Charlie. She huffed a bit but smiled none the less.
December 22, 1891
This was a fun morning. I woke early and got myself cleaned up before everyone else woke. Grace and Banit were next followed by Nessa and Lilly then Ma. I had them quietly come downstairs to see Bobby and Charlie. We'd all gathered around when Bobby woke. He started to get mad and get up but he froze when he saw that Charlie was hugging him. He didn't want to wake her but he didn't want us to tease him. What a predicament for him. Ha ha ha!
After a bit of teasing we got started on breakfast. Charlie didn't move a muscle until she smelled the bacon frying. She woke very quickly after that. Bobby was a bit mad at us which earned me a kick in the shins. I guess I deserve that. After we ate we cleaned up and I headed out. I have some things I need to pick up.
I first stopped by Mrs. Young. She had the dresses and corsets ready and thanked me for giving her an extra day. She said that if the girls need help getting it on at first to come by and she'll show them how. I made the mistake of saying that I know how to get them on. I should have kept that to myself. I got a bit of teasing out of that but it was fine. I had her help me box them and wrap them. When I returned home I discovered that I was not the first one to put a gift under the tree. The first gifts are from Lilly. When did she have time to wrap gifts? I placed mine under the tree and since only Banit and Ma are home I took the opportunity to wrap the other gifts I bought for Lilly and Bobby. Banit had purchased some as well so I helped her wrap and label her gifts. I almost found one meant for me. Luckily Banit caught me in time so that I didn't see it. It's a fairly large box. It took the two of us to wrap it properly. All the while Banit hummed some Christmas songs. While I was out I heard about some musicians that are to play in the park this afternoon. I asked Banit if she'd like to go listen to them. She smiled and said that she'd love to. She then asked if she could invite Grace and Nessa. "Of course" I said, "The more the merrier. I'm also going to ask Lilly and her friends to join us." We talked about this and that and once we finished wrapping gifts she left to find her friends. Ma stood in the kitchen pretending not to pay us any attention but I guess she didn't notice that I saw her smiling and heard her humming along with Banit. I teased her a bit. She glared at me and said, "Why the hell wouldn't I be happy? Can't I be happy? Only good thing you've done is bring those children here." She went on about how much she loves them and is so glad to have them. She got a bit emotional and nearly broke one of my ribs with her hug.
I had a surprise for her though. I told her about getting Lilly's Christmas dress altered and getting one made for Banit. She was a bit embarrassed about going out caroling again this year. Should be fun though, I'm planning on us heading out tomorrow. I set aside Lilly and Banit's dresses and Bobby and my tuxedos. We're going to make a special stop by the Bancroft house. I have got to get a dig in to Bobby. He just does not leave many openings. He's so hard to tease.
I started to leave to look for Lilly when she came in all excited. She'd heard about the musicians in the park and wanted to know if we could go. I told her that I was just leaving to invite her and her friends. She squealed a bit and hugged me tightly. She then ran out and told her friends. They were waiting for her outside. Ma had to leave for The Pasture. As she left I remembered Cora's letter. I stopped her and gave it to her. Ma looked so happy and relieved. She handed it back to me. It said that Cora is planning on coming down at the start of the New Year and will be staying indefinitely. Oh, that's both good and bad. Good for Ma, bad for me. Ma walked off, or should I say danced off. She looked so happy as she bounced off to The Pasture. Not long after that Banit showed up with Grace and Nessa. Lilly hid behind me to escape Nessa's hugs. We went in and had lunch afterwards Lilly and I gathered up a couple of large blankets to sit on. We then made our way over to the park.
We got there just as the musicians were getting set up so we had our pick of the spots. With our blankets set out we settled down and talked and joked around until they started. By then the park had become fairly crowded. Somehow a dance floor had remained in front of us. When the music started everyone quieted down. The group was very good. They played a wide variety of music, some sorrowful ballads to playful dance numbers. At one point they asked for a volunteer to sing with them. Lilly was practically thrown up on stage. I don't think the band was local as they didn't know of Lilly. They discussed some and started playing one of Lilly's favorite songs. Lilly is so used to performing that when she started singing she danced along as well. That got a lot of people up and dancing including me. I rather enjoyed dancing with Grace she's small and light on her feet. It's still awkward dancing with Lilly's friends. They are all too short. The shortest one stood on my feet just to give her a couple of extra inches. Lilly ended up singing several songs with them. The musicians played several other songs after that but Lilly demanded that I dance with her on every dance song. I guess it's not often that she has a chance to just dance and enjoy the music. We had a great time. After the concert was finished many people came up to tell Lilly how much they enjoyed her singing. All of the musicians nearly begged for her to join them as their singer. Lilly blushed and hid her face in my back. She still gets embarrassed by such things. We somehow made it home. Lilly and Banit's friends left us there and the three of us ended up napping on the couch together.
Really that's about it for today. The evening was a normal one.
December 23, 1891
With The Pasture closed, Ma is home and very much wants to spend time with everyone. Therefore we'll be spending the day with her. I asked her if she wanted to tone down the decorations as we got a little excited when we put them up. Really it looks horrible in here but Ma likes it. I think it has less to do with the looks and more to do with the fact that we put them up together. About all we did to them since the party is clean up and move some troublesome decorations. We're planning a small shopping trip and while we're out I'll be treating us to lunch at a good restaurant. Lilly is taking a while to get dressed. She has horrible bed head today.
Oh how my hands hurt, I think Bobby's do too. We got into a bit of a fight with some men today. I'll get in to that in a moment though. Lilly and Banit decided to dress up a bit and they looked gorgeous. We left to do a bit of shopping before lunch. We didn't buy much, mainly just trinkets. Afterwards we had a great lunch and got back to our shopping trip. Lilly and Banit snuck off to do some last minute Christmas shopping and caught the eye of a couple of young men. They didn't like being rejected by the girls and so they tried to drag them off. One even raised his hand against Banit. Lilly screamed. Ma, Bobby and I heard it but since Ma's a bit slower than us we got there first. I saw the first one hit Banit. I hit him hard enough to break his jaw. Bobby came and did a running kick into the other man's groin. We took to beating these two until Ma showed. She took over for Bobby. I had Bobby take the girls away. They didn't need to see what we were about to do. Ma and I both beat the fear of God into them. I doubt either will ever be able to walk right or feed themselves again, doesn't matter as neither will be eating solid foods any time soon. We left them there and went to check on Banit and Lilly. Banit's cheek was red from where he hit her but it wasn't bad. The sleeve on Lilly's dress was torn. Ma, Bobby and I hugged the girls for a long time consoling them. Ma said, "We're not gonna let some ne're do wells ruin our day. Come on now! I saw some lace in this store that'll look great on you girls." We spent the rest of the early afternoon shopping and having fun. Ma was right, there's no use in letting some bastards ruin a good day. I made the suggestion that we go caroling tonight. Everyone but Bobby thought that was a good idea. He still doesn't like being the center of attention.
We headed home and Lilly discovered that her Christmas dress from last year was missing. She was so upset. That is until I gave her and Banit a couple of boxes. Lilly was so surprised that I thought about getting her dress altered for her. Banit loved her dress. She said it was the most beautiful thing she's ever seen. They hurried upstairs and got themselves cleaned up. It takes them a while to get ready. Ma helped Bobby with his hair, still can't tame that cowlick on top of his head. Bobby and I then put on our tuxedos. His fit him perfectly and we managed to get his bowtie on straight this time. They are the same as last year's, black with a single tail, red waistcoat and tie. Once dressed, we waited for Ma and the girls on the couch. Ma had changed into her nicest dress and took the time to fix up her hair a bit. Then Lilly and Banit came down. They were stunning. Lilly had taken the time to put a little makeup on Banit and herself. I lack the words to describe just how beautiful they are. We practiced a couple of songs before leaving. Lilly still steals the show but Banit is fairly good. I'm not bad and neither is Bobby. Ma said that she's just going to listen. That's for the best. She does not have a presentable voice. We figured that we'd stop by the Harcourt's first and then to Mr. Brooks. Their stores were still open. From there the plan is to go by The Pasture and invite Joey along again.
We were on our way out when someone called out for Banit. It was Grace and Nessa, they were on their way over to visit her. We invited them along. Nessa was mesmerized by Lilly and Banit's dresses. Grace said that they felt bad not wearing nicer clothes. She then went on to say that they'll go home, change, and meet up with us at The Pasture. That sounded like a good idea. Mr. Harcourt, Jr. and his wife were at their store. We lined up outside and starting singing. They loved it and Mary talked Jr. into joining us. I've never heard him sing before. He has a wonderful baritone voice. With him along we balanced out Lilly and Banit's soprano. They closed up shop and Mr. Harcourt said to swing by their house sometime tonight. We waved goodbye and headed across the street to Mr. Brooks' store. He and Henry were there finishing up for the day. It looked like Henry fell in love with Banit when he saw her. Surprisingly, Charlotte Bancroft was also there. She's never heard Lilly sing. She was very impressed. I told her that we'll be swinging by her house later on. Bobby had a horrified look on his face and shook his head. That settled it. We had to go. We then headed over to The Pasture. Joey and Alice were more than happy to join us. They changed into their best dresses and while they were doing that Ma fixed us all some drinks. Bobby and the girls had a glass of milk while it was beer for the rest of us. Grace and Nessa showed by then and were looking great. Joey and Alice finished changing and so we left for the next place. We didn't have much of a plan, it was more or less wherever we saw people we'd stop and sing a bit. Grace has a great voice, much better than Banit but Nessa. She's tone deaf. She's the only person I've met that is worse than Ma. She volunteered to sing the silent parts.
We only managed to pick up one other person tonight, and that was Charlie. Mrs. Bancroft had told Charlie about us and so for the first time she asked her mother to help her dress up. She looked like a doll. They must have spent an hour brushing her hair to get it that shiny. When we started singing at their door, Mrs. Bancroft was the first one there. Frank came out a bit later and pulled Charlie out from behind her mother. Bobby stunned all of us and said, "Charlie, you're so pretty." I didn't think I'd ever hear him say something like that, I'd tease him but he's right. Charlie blushed so deep a red that I thought she'd turn into an apple. Mrs. Bancroft looked so pleased. It took some encouragement but Charlie finally joined us. She has a typical voice for a girl her age. Good pitch though. We went on to sing at a few more houses including the Young's and Warren's. Mrs. Young was nice enough to make some cocoa for everyone. After a couple of more stops we went back to The Pasture to have a small Christmas party. Ma and I fixed eggnog, cocoa, and the like for everyone. We sang more, danced and played about. It was late when we left.
Grace had the hard job of pulling Nessa away from Charlie and Lilly. I wonder about that girl sometimes. They left for home and started the rest of us filtering out. By the time we reached home we thought it'd be best if Charlie stayed with us tonight. So since she'll sneak over to sleep with Bobby anyways we figured it'd be best to let the two of them sleep in the bed. She and Bobby were so tired that I had to carry them upstairs. I got them dressed for bed. Charlie is wearing one of Bobby's shirts. I'll be sleeping on the couch tonight. I'd be there now except I'm still a bit wound up from the party. I think I'll have a drink and relax a bit before I settle down for the night.
Post Script: I'm almost out of my favorite bourbon.
December 24, 1891
It's Christmas Eve! Before last year I didn't really get excited about it. Now that Lilly and Bobby and now Banit are here I'm feeling like I did when I was a kid. I can't wait to open presents. I love the look on everyone's faces when they open their gifts.
Ma was the first one up this morning. She and I made a very large breakfast. The smell of cooking bacon woke Banit up. Her tripping and falling in the hallway woke everyone else. When she worked her way down I greeted her by saying, "Merry Christmas". It took her a second to realize what that meant and she ran up, hugged me and kissed my cheek. Lilly just happened to see this and so ran up on the other side of me and kissed me on the other cheek holding on to me tightly. I thought this was funny so I laughed a bit. Ma huffed and hugged me from behind, nearly breaking my arm. Then she reached around and kissed my cheek as well. We stared at Ma, who shrugged and said, "What? Everyone else is allowed to but not me?" We laughed so hard. Once we calmed down Ma asked me to go get Bobby. I walked upstairs and opened the door only to find Charlie leaning over a sleeping Bobby, kissing him. She was mortified that I saw that. I promised I wouldn't tell. Doesn't mean I won't tease her for it. I woke him up and got him cleaned up and dressed. I also had to help Charlie untangle her hair. She has very beautiful red hair, it's a shame she keeps it so short. Then again if it was long it'd just be a mess. We then joined the others downstairs. I looked at Bobby and said, "Good Morning, Sleeping Beauty". Charlie turned ten shades of red. I played it off as he was the last one awake. Like I said, I promised I wouldn't tell, I didn't promise not to tease. After breakfast Lilly took Charlie upstairs and into the bath. They spent a long time in there. I kept hearing Charlie protest, "Sissy I don' need a bath!", "I don' wanna brush my hair!", "NOOO!!! I don' want ribbons!" No use though, Lilly is quick with her hands. Charlie came down with her hair in ribbons looking like an absolute doll, an angry doll. Lilly exclaimed that it was a shame her hair is so short, she'd be gorgeous with long hair like her mother's. Charlie looked over at Bobby, whose eyes were nearly falling out of his head. He said he'd like to see her with long hair someday. I don't think he meant to say that as he blushed a bit after. I then suggested that we walk her home. He looked at me and said that he'll do it. We watched them leave and walk down the street. When he returned he was holding his cheek. Lilly thought that she slapped him or something, but that look on his face tells all. Charlie must have kissed him again. I won't tease him about that. Lilly started in on him but I stopped her. Banit, Ma and I knew exactly what happened, and we all laughed. What a day, and it's not even noon yet.
Ma has taken the girls out for a walk to see some of the decorations in the city. Bobby is drawing at the table. He still has a confused look on him. I'll see if he wants to talk.
I talked with him and I won't repeat what we said as that was private, but something he said has my attention. He said that he didn't "not" like it when she kissed him. Normally he hates that and struggles to avoid it. I'm thinking that he's starting to fall in love with Charlie.
We'd just finished when I discovered that she'd left her purse. There's nothing in it but still it needed to be returned. I told Bobby that we'll take it to her and take a short walk while we were at it. We were walking up to the Bancroft house when we heard, "NOOOO!" followed by what sounded like a big struggle and a stark naked Charlie came running out the front door. She started running down the street when Bobby called out to her. She ran up and hid behind him. Mrs. Bancroft came out with a dress in one hand and a rope in the other. She was furious and growled, "Charlotte Ann Bancroft, You get in here this instant and put your clothes on or I'll tie you down and force them on you!" "I'm not wearing that ugly thing!" she replied defiantly "And you can't make me!" I nudged Bobby. He took the hint and said "Charlie, I'd like to see it on you." There was a long pause followed by a now embarrassed and naked Charlie walking in and taking the dress from her mother. Bobby and I laughed to ourselves. Mrs. Bancroft said that she doesn't know what he does to make Charlie listen but she wishes he'd teach it to her. Bobby just shrugged. Mrs. Bancroft invited us in for tea. I think it's the least we can do. It'd help control Charlie a bit. Bobby returned Charlie's purse and we talked about them. She thanked us so much for letting Charlie be friends with Bobby. She said that Charlie has become so much better behaved since they became friends. Bobby blushed a bit. We were interrupted by an unusually quiet Charlie. I think Charlie was right, that is a horrible dress. Mrs. Bancroft agreed, she told Charlie, "See if you'd be still and try on clothes with me you wouldn't get such weird looking dresses." Even I have sense enough to not say anything. Once freed, Charlie disappeared to change into something more comfortable, overalls and not much else. She still had the ribbons in her hair though. She must have secretly liked them. We talked a bit longer when Frank walked in. He said, "It's quiet. Either Charlie's gone or Bobby's here." He turned the corner, looked at Bobby and added, "Yup". I didn't mean to laugh that hard, it just struck me as so damn funny. I spoke with Frank for a bit before telling Bobby that it was time to leave. Frank and Charlotte nearly begged us to stay longer. Poor folks, oh well.
Ma was cooking our Christmas dinner when we walked in. There was a small bit of ham for Banit and me, while she made a veritable feast for everyone to share. Lilly and Banit were pouring over the presents counting them and seeing who got more. I was careful in that I tried to get the same number for everyone. Bobby ran over to join them and I tried to help Ma in the kitchen. She kicked me out. Instead I'm now just lazing about waiting on dinner.
Dinner was great. I ate way too much. Afterwards Lilly, Banit and I washed dishes. Lilly washed, Banit rinsed, and I dried and put them away. Ma asked Bobby to help her move things around in the living room so that we have space to open our presents. Once finished we got started on handing them out. We had Bobby play Santa and hand out the presents. I have to say Banit got quite the stack. Lilly was a close second with Bobby not far behind. His were mostly smaller, although he may have had more. We took turns opening them.
I was surprised at how many Ma had received. I had bought her a new dress and aprons. She glared at me and said that I shouldn't have gotten her anything, that the stove was more than enough. Lilly and Bobby got together and bought her some trinkets and other things she likes. Banit had made her some jewelry out of beads and turquoise. There were several pieces and they were quite beautiful. She cried when she opened her last gift. It was the picture of Pa that I had fixed. I told her it was from all of us. She couldn't speak but pulled us all in for a hug. Poor Bobby was nearly crushed.
Lilly loved the show dress that I got her and was extremely excited to get the corset. She jumped up and down saying that it's her first one. Ma and I looked at her and said that it's only for her shows and only if she can sing while wearing it. Banit had a look on her face that said that she didn't have the slightest clue as to what it was that she was looking at. We got her settled down and back to her presents. There were several bolts of dress fabrics and other goods for her to play with and some costume jewelry. Ma had gotten her a hand mirror and brush that she adored.
Bobby had quite the haul. He got a lot of toys and games and, much to his chagrin, a bunch of clothes. Then again he needed them. He's out grown most of his clothing. Lilly and Banit got together and bought him some art supplies including some paints and an art book. He looked up at them and said, "Thank you! Thank you! Banit and Sis, I love them!" I have the strange feeling that we're going to have a lot of paintings in the next few weeks.
Banit got many of the same things that Lilly did. Although she received a couple more corsets. She didn't have a clue what they were. Lilly tried to explain them but Banit just didn't understand. I told her that we'll just have to show her what they do. She nodded and went on opening her other gifts. Like Lilly, Ma had gotten her a hand mirror and brush. She loved the brush. She had also gotten a lot more costume jewelry and other such things.
Last there was me. I really liked what I got. Lilly had made me a matching waistcoat and tie set that I think is one of my best looking ones. Banit got me a new hat. It's much nicer than the one I normally wear. Bobby bought me some cuff links with my initial engraved on them. They were extremely nice. I'll save them for when I wear my tuxedo. Ma had Dutchy make me a new jacket and pants. I normally wear black but these are charcoal with a pinstripe. They look great!
Once we were done with presents and cleaning up it was time to try on our clothing. Bobby and I had finished dressing fairly quickly when I heard some fussing in the girl's room. They were trying to figure out how to put on the corset. I nearly died laughing when I heard Ma exclaim, "How the hell am I supposed to know how they go on? Do I look like I've ever worn the darn things?" That was soon followed by "Dammit! Flint! Get yer narra behind in here! I know you know how these work!" Lilly was more than a bit embarrassed by me seeing her so undressed but Ma's right. I do know how they work. I tried my best not to embarrass her further but they'd gotten the lacing tangled and in my attempts to untangle it, Lilly...fell out. I pretended not to see that. I got things straightened out and showed them how to adjust and tie it. I then turned my attention to Banit. She's comfortable with being naked around others so it was much easier to get her situated. I made sure to turn my back to Lilly so that she could finish dressing. The corset gave Banit a decent if not still a bit modest figure. She loved the way it made her look. I then helped her put on her new dress. Once she was dressed I left so that they can finish with the rest of their trappings.
Downstairs Bobby and I waited. It wasn't long before they came down. Lilly was stunning in her new dress. It was a bit loose around the middle but that's because of the corset and it can be adjusted out. Luckily she can still sing while wearing the corset. Banit loved the way she looked but said that the corset was a bit uncomfortable. I told her that we'll go by Mrs. Young's shop and have her adjust everything the right way. I got it the best I could. She looks great, hard to tell that she's flat as a board. Ma was fussing over Bobby. She made him try every piece of his clothing on. The waistcoat and tie that Lilly made for me is perfect! The fit is great and I really like the colors she chose. She used a Jacquard red with black and silver accents. She made three different ties, a bow tie, a cravat, and a simple ribbon tie. They all match the waistcoat and look spectacular with the jacket and pants that Ma gave me. We all played around acting like aristocratic fools and having a grand time when there was a knock at the door. It was Charlie. She came to give Bobby a present. It was a bowtie like the one he wore at the wedding. It was poorly made and kind of shoddy. I think she made it herself. Bobby turned to me and asked me to help him with it. I tied it and made it look the best I could but it still looked odd it was a bit big as well so that didn't help. Lilly tried to be nice and said that if Charlie wants to that she'd help her fix it and make it nice. That must have stung Charlie pretty hard. Bobby however saved the day. He said, "I think it's great just the way it is. Charlie made it for me and that's what makes it great." Damn! The kid is good. Charlie smiled so big and hugged him before running off back home. We called it good after that and decided that we'd spend the evening picking up from our presents. Bobby wore that tie until it was time for bed.
Post Script: I don't know if Bobby thought about what he said to Charlie or if he said the first thing to come to mind, but he's going to be a lady-killer when he's older.
December 25, 1891
Alright normally I'd start by telling you about this morning but I have to start from last night. I had waited until I was sure that everyone was asleep before I brought out the "Santa" gifts. I came downstairs to find Banit hiding next to the fireplace with a stick and some rope. I asked her what she was doing and she said that she was going to catch Santa Claus because it's not nice to break into people's homes. She was serious too! It took every ounce of willpower to not burst out laughing. I had to explain to her that Santa Claus is just a fairy tale and doesn't really exist. I could tell that she really felt like a fool then. She looked up at me and said that she knew something was wrong when the kids told her that he comes down the chimney. Oh poor innocent Banit, never change. I sent her off to bed after making her promise not to tell anyone. I then was able to place the presents under the tree and go back to bed. I had a hard time falling asleep as I kept laughing about Banit.
Christmas morn, I was woken by Bobby jumping up and down on the bed saying, "Get up! Get up! It's Christmas! Get up!" I could hear Lilly and Banit getting dressed in their room as well. I had Bobby go wash his face and get dressed before we went downstairs. Surprisingly Ma was already up and looking cheerful. She normally sleeps in. I guess she's as excited as the kids about Christmas. She'd already made breakfast and was waiting for us. I joined her while we waited on Banit and the kids. I was starting to wonder if Banit had woken up or not when I heard "Thump!" come from upstairs followed by, "I'm alright!" That's the usual morning trip from Banit. They eventually joined Ma and I and were so excited to see their presents. There were a lot of them. Even some I don't remember placing. I guess Ma did that early this morning. We had breakfast and set the dishes aside to clean after presents.
Lilly loved all the trinkets and the music book she got. Bobby got a bunch of toys and candy as well as an easel and a new sketch book. I think that was Ma's big contribution. Banit got lots of jewelry and books. There's a lot more but it'd take all day to write and I don't feel like it. "Santa" had left me a note telling me to take my pistols down to the gunsmith and that he'll engrave them for me. I never thought of have them engraved. I think I'll like that. I might even see if I can get a gold or silver inlay as well. I'll do that on Monday.
Once presents were done we cleaned up. Banit and Lilly went to wash the dishes while Bobby and I cleaned up around the rest of the house. Ma tried to help but we wouldn't let her. We spent the rest of the day putting away our gifts and playing with others.
I really enjoyed today. Days like this make everything worth while.
December 26, 1891
After the last two very busy days, it comes time to show off what we've got. At least that's what it looks like around here. Banit and the kids woke up bathed and put on their new clothes. Bobby tried to tie his new tie himself but couldn't figure it out. I helped him though. He's getting better at it. Honestly, I'm more surprised that he wanted to wear it. He normally wouldn't wear a tie unless it was for something important. Even Ma put on her new dress and wanted to go shopping. She just wanted to show off but I'm not going to say anything. Not one to be outdone, I figured that I should get my act together as well. I got myself cleaned up and donned my new trappings and headed out. I really like this new hat. I headed over to the millinery shop and saw about getting it fitted.
Luckily the millinery shop was open and it didn't take her long to get my hat fitting right. I then wandered around looking for some kind of entertainment. I didn't find much. What with it being the morning after Christmas and all of the saloons closed, everyone was on their best behavior. In my wanderings I found Bobby and Charlie. They were so cute together. I wish I could have gotten a photograph of them. Charlie had dressed up and had her hair in ribbons like what Lilly had done. They were leaving Mr. Harcourt's store. He stood outside watching them leave. He had the proudest look on his face. I figured I'd go visit with him for a while.
Mr. Harcourt said that he was very surprised to learn that Charlie was a girl and that she was so cute all dressed up. He asked me about the tie. He was wondering where Bobby had gotten it as it looked like it was made by a child. He nearly died laughing when I told him that Charlie made it for Bobby. We talked a long time about everything that's gone on in the past month or so. Apparently Jr. and his wife will be going down to a tropical island. It should take them a bit over a month to make the trip. They're planning to go in February so that it won't be too hot and it won't be cold there either. I'm very happy for them.
I spent most of the afternoon there before coming home. I was greeted at the door by Luke and Edna. They had come over to visit. I guess we'd arrived at about the same time. I invited them in and brewed up some coffee. They just wanted to catch up and talk some. It was nice. They are still madly in love. I had to tease Luke a bit. I caught him holding hands with Edna. He was so embarrassed. Gah! He's so innocent and proper! It's sickening. It's a good thing I like him or I think I'd hate him. Edna said that they're planning on visiting her parents in St. Louis over the New Year. It seems that everyone I know has or is paring off, and here I am still single without a prospect in the future. Lilly would object to that statement. We spoke until evening when everyone started coming home. Luke and Edna excused themselves saying that they are having dinner at her place. I saw them off and sprawled out on the couch. Lilly fussed a bit until I sat her on my stomach. I spent the rest of the evening there except for dinner.
December 27, 1891
We all dressed up in our finest and headed off to Church. The preacher has been nice to me for a while now. That's irritating. I think I liked it better when he hated me. At least then he was interesting. Today's sermon was about a wayward traveler. That got me to thinking. I'd like to take a trip again. I think sometime in early spring would be best. I'd like to head back up to Fort Worth, Texas again and see if I can find any more clues about me. Maybe I'll ask that Indian chief where my home used to be. He did say that they visited often so he should know where it was. I had a strange dream about it last night so that may have something to do with it. I was a child again. I saw my parents but I couldn't quite make out their faces. We played near a river. I got in trouble and my mother scolded me calling me "something" Locke. I couldn't hear her say my first name. I've had this dream several times before. I think it could be a memory of a time I had long forgotten. I had made up my first name as I couldn't remember my real one, but because of this dream I know that my last name is Locke. I need to talk to Ma about this. For some reason, this is bothering me. I'll talk to her as soon as I can get her alone.
Other than Church I didn't do much today.
December 28, 1891
The Green Pasture opens back up today. I think I'll help out. That'll give me an excuse to talk to Ma alone without raising suspicions. Ma's sleeping in and so I'm getting the kids fed and out the door to play. Banit said that she's planning on having lunch with her friends. I should have all kinds of opportunities to speak with Ma today.
Ma finally woke and got ready for the day. We had some time to spare before she was needed at The Pasture. I spoke with her about my dream. She too thinks that it could be a memory. I remember so much about that day but I can't remember my parent's faces or my real name. She asked me if I was going back. I told her I was thinking about it. We discussed it and we agreed that waiting until spring would be best. She's not objecting. However I got the feeling that she feared that she had done a bad job in raising me. I hugged her and told her that even if she wasn't the one that gave birth to me that she's still my one and only mother and I wouldn't trade that for the world. That perked her up a bit too much. She nearly squeezed the life out of me with her hug. We slowly made our way to The Pasture talking along the way. We really didn't talk about much, nothing important anyway, just the kind of talk that happens when there's nothing much to talk about.
When we arrived at The Pasture there was a big fuss and a large crowd gathered. Ma and I forced our way to find that a small fight had broken out between a pair of men. Ma and I separated them and found out what the problem was. Both were already drunk and were fighting about who's going in first. Our solution, we barred either from coming in for a week. The one I was dealing with got mad at me and took a swing at me. He was so drunk that I didn't have to dodge. He fell over, hit his head and was out. Ma threatened to swat the other one but he ran off saying that he'll never come back. I threw the first one out into the alley so that he could sleep it off. What a way to open for business. Lord almighty.
The rest of the day went without incident. Many people brought by belated Christmas gifts for Alice, Joey, and even a few for Lilly. We promised that we'd give them to her, but that's after we check out what's inside. You never know what some people will do for attention. Joey once got an erotic painting of one of her admirers. It was obviously embellished in a certain area. As a joke we hung it on the wall and it's stayed there ever since. We do our best to keep Lilly away from it.
Near dinner time Ma asked me to go take care of the kids. It was a slow day anyways so I did as she asked. I was just in time to enjoy Banit's cooking. We had a quiet evening.
December 29, 1891
Ma said that she didn't need my help during the week and said that I could do whatever I normally do. What I normally do? That's usually wander around looking for trouble. Oh well, if that's what she wants me to do.
I had a very rare sight today! I feel lucky about it too. I ended up by the docks. I heard that a large ship was coming in and that usually means sailors are getting paid and are ready to gamble. I sat on a crate near where the dock rats usually play their games. I heard someone calling for me but I couldn't see them. That when I saw her, a shark girl. I've never actually seen one before. She was very exotic looking with black tips on her fins and dark hair. She was calling to me from the water. "Well, aren't you the pretty fishy." I teased. She replied, "Yeah, yeah, now shut the hell up and give me that line you fleabag." She's a feisty one! I needed to tease her a bit so I dangled the end of the line over her saying, "Is this what you're looking for? I'll give it to you if you ask politely." The look on her face said everything, and it wasn't nice either. She surprised me by jumping out of the water and taking the line from my hand. She called me an asshole as she swam away. I "accidentally" stepped on the line being fed out. She was very mad. She disappeared and as I looked for her she jumped out of the water and onto the dock. She grabbed my collar and said, "You got a problem jerk?" "I sure do," I sweetly replied, "I don't know your name." She laughed rudely, took the rest of the line except what was attached to the dock and threw it into the water. She started to dive in but I grabbed her tail. I don't think she liked that. She went from mad to furious. I smiled and asked, "Dinner? My treat!" She glared at me and said, "Die!" before diving back in. For some reason, I really like her.
I couldn't really get a good game going. I guess the sailors were too busy unloading and taking care of that end of things to be any fun. I left and wandered around for a while but I just can't get that shark out of my mind. There's just something about her. I'll go back tomorrow and see if she's still there.
The rest of the day was fairly normal and dull. I'm still thinking about that girl though.
December 30, 1891
Today looks to be yet another slow day. I however will be spending it looking for that girl. Banit and the kids were up early to go play and do their things. Ma's sleeping in again. That means that I won't be questioned if I dress up a bit more than usual.
She wasn't at the docks. They said that she'd left and gone to town. She shouldn't be that hard to find. She's the only shark in town.
Bah! I've looked everywhere! She was looking for a doctor at first. When I went to talk to him about her he said that he can't discuss her but said that she was looking for someone. I wonder who that could be. Anyways, I've searched all day but to no avail. I'm taking the trolley back home. I'm tired. I've done a lot of walking today.
December 31, 1891
It's New Year's Eve. That means that Ma and Lilly will be working tonight and will probably need my help. I'll take it easy until then. My search for that girl will have to wait until tomorrow.
The Green Pasture will be having a New Year's celebration again this year. As such we invited Bobby to join us but he said that the Bancroft's have already asked him to join them. That's probably for the better. Banit is coming though, she practically begged us to let her. Ma said that she could so long as she either stayed upstairs where she can't break anything or stayed seated. Banit gave the biggest smile and hugged Ma. She then asked if Grace and Nessa could join us as well. Ma sighed and said, "Sure, sure. The more the merrier." So with that, Banit hurried off. She'll join us later.
At The Pasture, we quickly went to work getting things ready. Lilly and Mary practiced a new song they'll be singing tonight while Joey and Alice worked on a dance number for it. I helped Ma with the champagne. Every year as a bit of service Ma buys several bottles of champagne and gives everyone a glass to celebrate. We got everything set up and opened. We had a slow start and it was mostly just our regulars. However once it started getting dark people started coming in. The full Harcourt clan came, including John and Jenny. I was surprised to see them. Banit came soon after with Grace and Nessa in tow. Jenny spotted her and rushed over to greet her. It didn't take long at all for the four of them to become friends. They got themselves a table and were cackling on like life long friends. Soon though, it was time for Lilly to sing. I swear it was like a concert hall it got so quiet. She started up with her usual dance numbers and got everyone up and dancing around. She wore her new outfit for the first time. It looked great on her. We were all having a grand time. However a police officer came for me. He said that there was someone looking to hire me and that he brought her along. I brushed it off saying that I wasn't looking for work. He shook his head and sighed before walking off. I sat down at Banit's table and sat her in my lap. We were all laughing and joking around when I heard, "Well let me talk to him!" The officer returned and said, "Mr. Locke, sir, this is the woman I was telling you about. I turned only to see that it was the shark girl I had been looking for! She glared at me and said, "No! Not him! You've got to be kidding me. There's no way that womanizing jerk could ever help anyone!" She was a bit loud. Lilly stormed up and slapped her saying, "You take that back! Flint's too good for the like of you!" Nessa grabbed her and pulled her into her lap. "I see you even go for little girls too, is there no one you'd--" I had to cut off there. I said. "Even I'll admit that I'm a bit of a womanizer but that's going too far. As far as I'm concerned Lilly is my daughter and I won't have anyone talk like that in front of her!" She choked a bit then looked down at Lilly and apologized. She started to turn and walk out but I caught her arm and walked her out. I wanted to really give her a piece of my mind. "What the hell is your problem? What, you can't take a bit of teasing? The hell is wrong with you?" I asked. I was more than mad. Quietly she said that she was out of line and apologized to me. She said that she was looking for someone but couldn't find him and was told by the police chief that I'd be her best bet if she wanted to catch him. She said that she was looking for the man that killed her father and stole his money. She had a photograph of him and had heard that he had come to New Orleans by boat a week or so ago. She said that she didn't have money for a proper bounty or to hire a private investigator so she has been looking for him herself. She fell to her knees and started crying. She begged me to help her. I almost left her there when she suddenly slumped over. She was unconscious. I picked her up and carried her upstairs and into a spare bedroom. I then ran and fetched the doctor. Luckily he was still awake and not drunk yet. He said that she'd be fine after some rest and something to eat. Apparently she hasn't eaten in several days. I paid the doctor and left to get some food. I don't know what she normally eats but when you're that hungry anything will do. That I do know. I went home and made a large sandwich for her and sat it along with some milk and water on the table in the room. I left a note saying, "You should have taken me up on dinner. That would have been nicer. Eat this and get some rest. We'll talk in the morning." I then joined everyone else.
I was just in time for the New Year's toast. Lilly and Banit were surprised that Ma gave them some champagne. She said that they can only have one glass for the toast and that's it. Mr. Harcourt took center stage. He has a booming voice when he wants to be heard. He brought out his watch and led us on a count down. At the end we all cheered and toasted the New Year. Lilly's eye's nearly popped out of her head when she tasted her champagne. She said it's all bubbly and makes her warm. We laughed. I think she enjoyed her first drink. Banit didn't care for it much. I suppose that she's just not much for drinking. That's probably for the best. We soon had Lilly back up on stage and singing her final songs, including her new one. I think it was a big hit with everyone. Near 1 am I asked Banit to take Lilly home. I told her that if Grace and Nessa want to stay the night that it'll be alright. They agreed and after hugging her good night Lilly was on her way home. The rest of the night was fun. We had a grand party but it soon ended. Without Lilly's singing it just wasn't the same. We were done by 4 am. I sent Ma home I told her that I was going to stay until our "guest" woke up. Ma gave her usual disapproving 'humph' and walked out. Joey invited me to sleep with her in her bed. While it was the only other one available I declined. I instead slept on her couch. I think that if I shared her bed that I'd be tempted to prove that shark's opinion of me. I didn't want that.
January 1, 1892
This morning Joey and I checked on our friend. We found her devouring that sandwich I left for her. I guess she slept all through the night. She was visibly embarrassed but did her best to hide it. She thanked me for the sandwich. She's a proud one, there's no doubting that. I asked if she'd like to go get a proper breakfast and discuss what she came here for. She started to refuse but her stomach growled something fierce. I laughed and said that I can't let anyone starve, especially if they came to me for help. Joey took her back to her room and got her cleaned up and we left. I took them to a nearby family restaurant. I told her to order whatever she wanted and that she can pay me back when she's able. Joey and I talked about the party last night and avoided mentioning the little scene. We were in the middle of laughing about an older gent flirting with Ma when the girl finally spoke up. She introduced herself as Melanie. Melanie was very apologetic about what happened last night. I played it off as her being very hungry and told her not to worry about it. That we'll just start over. She thanked me. I then told her that we'll talk about it after we eat. She must have been starving. She nearly cried while she ate. She finished her food long before Joey and I did. I could tell that she was still hungry so I ordered another serving for her. She ate until she nearly burst. With that done we began to talk.
She said that some cargo went missing from the ship and so the Captain locked the galley and refused to pay until the cargo or whoever stole it came forward. What a bastard. It's one thing to withhold pay but to starve his crew. That's cruel. I can see why she was so irritable now. We then went on about why she came. She said that her father was a simple fisherman and took pity on a man that looked like he was down on his luck and gave him a job. They worked together for a couple of years when the man, John Brossard, found out about her father's savings and tried to steal it. There was a fight and Brossard shot her father, stole the money, and ran. She was left with nothing and has been looking for him ever since. However, since this happened outside of the United States that there was nothing that the authorities could do. She begged me for my help finding him and promised that she'd do anything to repay me for my help. Again she was nearly in tears while begging me. Damn! Why can't I say "No" when they look at me like that? I agreed to help her so long as she did as I asked and pay me whenever she's able to. She gave me the biggest toothiest smile I'd ever seen. I slumped down shaking my head. Joey patted me on the back and said, "Don't fret. You were going to help her anyways." I know, I just, I don't know. I guess I'm a pushover for a damsel in distress. Lord.
I asked her about Brossard. She said that he's a coyote about my height and scrawny. He's got a bullet hole in his right ear and is missing the tip of his left index finger. She showed me a picture of him that her father had made. He looked familiar but I can't place him. I told her that I'd ask around and see what I could find out. Last night she said that he'd come here by boat a week ago. That's where I'll start. I told her to take it easy and rest today. I paid for the meal and left her with Joey. Melanie got up to follow me but Joey stopped her. My first stop was the docks.
I found the captain of the ship that Melanie came in on. He was berating another sailor. I hit him and beat the stuffing out of him. I then told him that if he doesn't pay Melanie what he owed her that I'd be back and he'll never walk again. I left him there on the dock and went to find the dock master. He's a salty old hound but he's a good man. I asked him if he'd seen the man in the picture. He said that so many people come through that he can't remember them all. I asked him to keep his eyes open for him and to contact me if he sees him. He agreed. I've worked with him before. He's reliable. I then went by the nearby bars and hotels. One hotel manager remembers him as he left without paying. He signed the logbook as John Boyd. He said that John left muttering about whores and gambling. I then headed over to the red light district. A couple of prostitutes remembered him, one as recently as last night. I may have to come back. According to them he frequents them nearly every night. From there I went by the gambling dens and casinos. He'd been kicked out of several for starting fights. It was getting late by then and so I thought it'd be best if I checked in back home and told them what I'm doing if Joey hasn't already.
Back home, Lilly was waiting for me. She was none too happy about me helping Melanie. I tried to explain it to her but she'd made up her mind and there was nothing I could do to change it. She demanded that I forget about Melanie. I had to stop her there. I told her that I have to help, that I couldn't live with myself if I didn't at least try. That didn't stop her from pouting about it. This is going to be one of those things isn't it? Damned if I do, damned if I don't, I'd rather be damned for something I did than something I didn't so I'm going to help. I hugged her and said that this doesn't look like it'll take long nor be that dangerous. She puffed her cheeks and made her angry noises at me. Guess that means that she'll begrudgingly let me. I'm probably going to need to make this up to her.
I had dinner with Lilly, Bobby, and Banit and told them what I was doing and that I'll probably not be around much for a while. Bobby smiled at me and said, "Just make sure you catch the bad guy and I'll be happy!" Lilly made more angry noises. Banit just said to be careful. After dinner I swung by The Pasture and found Melanie hard at work cleaning tables. Ma said that she begged to work here to pay me back. She'll also be staying in the spare room next to Joey's. That's good. I sat down with Melanie and told her about today, I left out the part about me beating up her captain. She confirmed that John loves gambling and women and said that he often would come on to her but she didn't like him and would hit him. She said that she's glad that Ma's letting her work here and promised that she'll work hard and pay me back. I smiled. Despite her ill temper she's actually a good girl. I left just as Lilly arrived. She always gets a lot of cheers when she walks in.
Back in the red light district, there was no sign of John. I had asked the prostitutes to keep their eyes open for him and to tell me if they see him. It's still early so he's more than likely gambling or drinking. I made my way over to the casinos and heard a large fight break out. I rushed over but it was a couple of burros squabbling over their winnings. I checked as many casinos, bars, and saloons as I could. Unfortunately no one has seen him tonight. I searched well into the night and didn't make it back home until nearly dawn.
January 2, 1892
I slept in late. No point in going out early. I woke at about 10 and found Lilly reading on the couch. I put my head in her lap and went back to sleep. I woke about an hour later feeling her play with my ears. She was giggling while pulling on them. I sat up said "My turn" and pulled her over into my lap and started playing with her ears. We were laughing and goofing around so much that we didn't hear Ma sneaking up behind us. She stood over the top of us, yelled, "My turn!" and joined in. What a mess. She ended up with Lilly in her lap "chewing" on her ear. We laughed and laughed. That's what I call a good morning. We played a bit longer, had lunch and then Ma had to go back to work. She left practically dancing down the street. I kept playing with Lilly. I ended up on my back pushing Lilly up and down with my feet while I held her hands. That ended in a tickle fight. That's when there was a knock at the door. It was Melanie. She'd come to apologize and make up with Lilly. She said that she saw us playing through the window and that she knows that she was wrong about me. She asked if Lilly could possibly forgive her and that she'd like to be friends. Lilly forgave her and invited her in for tea. I left them to their girl talk and headed out to look for clues about John.
I searched around all the bars and other seedy holes that I couldn't last night. One man said that he thought he remembered seeing John at this cheap brothel nearby. I didn't check there. Sure enough the Madam of the house remembered him and said that she'd like to find him herself. She said that he hurt one of her girls when she asked to be paid. I checked on her. She's now sporting a large scar down the side of her face. That does it. I'm finding him and making sure he suffers. The Madam said that she's got her girls out looking for him but she'd rather that they not get hurt. I told her that if they find him to send word for me and that I'll deal with him. She wished me good hunting. I smiled at that. I don't know why. Up to now I've just been carrying my derringer. I went back home and got my gunbelt and pistols. The defining thing about his behavior is that he likes gambling and prostitutes. I can use that to my advantage, especially now that I have multiple sets of eyes out looking for him. I spoke with some of the street girls and other brothels spreading the word about what he did to that girl. She was a pretty one too. Word like that spreads quickly. I searched all night again but didn't have any luck. He must be laying low tonight.
January 3, 1892
I was surprised to find Melanie at Church this morning. She sat with Joey, they seem to have hit it off and become friends. Afterwards we had our usual first Sunday pot-luck luncheon. I told her about last night. She was shocked and even more determined to find him. She wanted to go with me tonight but I told her that all of those places are closed on Sunday so there's no point in going. I said to take it easy today and that we'll start back up tomorrow. She nodded and then said, "I guess it was right to ask you for help. I've been searching for months and haven't gotten as close as you have in just a couple of days." I laughed and said that it was mostly luck and my womanizing ways that's gotten me this far. We both laughed. After the luncheon she left with Joey back to The Pasture. I wandered around a bit but ended up going there as well. I wanted to check on her and see how she's really doing here. I knocked on her door and she let me in. She said that she's doing fine and likes working here but wants to go home and take over her father's fishing boat. She got quiet and again promised me that she'll pay me for my help. I was looking out the window at the time and when I turned around she was standing there naked. She wouldn't look at me. I asked her what she was doing. She said that she was going to pay me no matter how. I laughed, hard, much too hard. She gave me a most indignant look and demanded to know why I was laughing. I walked up hugged her and said that while I appreciate that she's willing to go that far to pay me, that I wasn't going to take that kind of payment from her. She asked me why. I could only reply, "Because you don't want to. Not really. However, if someday you want to, then and only then will we share that bed." Melanie hugged me back and said that I'm too good of a person. I said, "Shhh, don't tell anyone. I don't want to ruin my reputation." That earned me a good laugh. I sat down as she picked up her clothes. She turned to me and asked, "Aren't you going to turn around while I get dressed?" I smiled and said, "You got naked on your own accord, I'm at least going to watch you dress." She glared at me and called me a pervert. I chuckled. She dressed and we talked for a while. She told me about her home. She really loves fishing and the island that she lives on. It was fairly late before I realized it. I invited her over for dinner. The walk there was quiet but a good kind. Ma was cooking and was more than happy to have Melanie join us. Banit didn't care to see her though. Melanie recognized her as that girl that was sitting in my lap. I smiled and said, "Well this is delightfully awkward." I then properly introduced her to Banit and Bobby. She again had to apologize for her outburst. Bobby was mesmerized by all of her teeth. We had a good meal and afterwards we gathered in the living room to talk. Everyone had to tell their stories about how they met me. Honestly it was a bit embarrassing. Soon it was bedtime for the kids so I walked Melanie back. She thanked me for dinner and wished me a good night. I returned home and enjoyed a relaxing evening.
January 4, 1892
I woke early today. Banit asked for my help getting the books that she needs for college. Therefore we went shopping. The college had mailed her a list of the basic supplies and books that she needs. While we were on our way I asked her what she wanted to go to college for. She said that she wants to be a teacher because she wants to share the knowledge that she's been given. That sounds like a great mindset if you ask me. We had to go to several store to get everything but it was nice. She paid for everything out of her money. I offered to pay for some but she said that she wanted to do it herself. We had a nice lunch in town when Joey found us. She couldn't stay long but wanted to let me know what Melanie had asked her last night. She said that after I dropped her off that the two of them talked for a while. Eventually Melanie asked if I was seeing anyone. That certainly got Banit's attention. She glared at me and huffed like Ma does when she's annoyed. Dear Lord, do you love me or hate me? Joey laughed and laughed. It was an awkward walk back home. Lilly was there. She asked Banit why she was angry. Banit walked up and whispered in her ear. Lilly puffed her cheeks at me again and made even more angry sounds at me. I figured it'd be best if I were to leave. I donned my gunbelt and left as quickly as I could.
I wasn't planning on looking for John this early. His type doesn't tend to move until the sun starts going down. I took the opportunity to nap in the park. I heard Lilly talking to Banit saying that she was going to give me a throughout talking to. Banit was in full agreement on that. My usual napping grounds won't protect me this time. I quickly wrote a note addressed to Lilly and sat a rock on top. It said to not look for me as I'm out working. I slithered off. That doesn't make me a coward does it? I stuck around long enough to see them find it. I was sneaking off when I heard Lilly yell, "Flint! You jerk!" I took off at a full run.
After my escape from Lilly I set myself to finding John. I visited the girl that he cut up and saw that she was doing alright, all things considered. She said that she wants to kill him herself. I told her that she'll have to catch him before I do if she was going to kill him. I did promise that if I caught him before her that I'd do what I could to bring him in alive and that I'd let her do whatever she wanted to short of killing him. She painfully smiled at me. You know its one thing to kill a man, even over something petty like money. It's a completely different story to hurt a woman like that. The Madam let me rest there while I spoke with her girls about what they found. From what I gather, John likes small weak looking women and likes to be mean to them. The girls said that they've talked to all of the other girls in the area and they've all said the same thing. That means that this man is a pure coward and will either be quick to run or quick to draw a gun when confronted. I asked the Madam if she knew where all of the smaller working girls are. She said that the only brothel that he hasn't been to that has smaller girls is a few blocks over. She gave me their card and wrote a letter explaining everything. She said to give the letter to them and they'll help me. I left just as the sun was setting. If his pattern holds true then he should be making an appearance soon.
Madam Molly was more than happy to help me. She said that she'd heard what happened and didn't want any of her girls hurt. I told her about John's preference for small women. She smiled and said that she'll make sure to put her tiniest ones out front. She offered me use of the first room up the stairs and said that whatever I wanted would be on the house. A free night at a brothel, if I wasn't so determined to catch John I'd take full advantage of it. All of the working girls in the area spread word about me looking for John and they set themselves up a rather effective communication network. It was better than having a hundred telegraph lines. I waited a while with the company of a homely if not sweet natured squirrel girl. I wanted to keep an eye out for John but it was difficult with a mostly naked girl in my lap. Missy said that she was rather new to this kind of work but didn't have any choice. She's a good example of just how lucky Lilly is. I don't think this girl is much older than Lilly. I'd say maybe 17 or 18. I told her that she could keep her clothes on tonight so long as she kept me company. She smiled at me and said that she knows. She just wanted to thank me for protecting all the girls like this. I smiled back at her and slid down further in the chair. I said that I needed to keep my pants on in case I have to run quickly. She stripped down and went to work. I really enjoyed it. It's been a while for me. She never let up and used every part of her that was possible. I'd nearly forgotten what I'd come for when I spotted a man that looked like John outside the brothel. I finished up, buttoned my pants back up and was on my way out when Madam Molly came to fetch me. She said that there's a man she thinks is John downstairs. I played the part of a drunken fool that had a good time. I hung off of Madam, spanked a couple of girls as they walked by and generally acted the fool. I stumbled up to John telling him just how good the girls here are. He was a bit scared at first but let his guard down when Missy came down and hung off of my arm "begging" me to come back and visit her. John stood up and grabbed one of the smaller girls and pushed her upstairs. I stumbled up behind him saying, "Hey, hey, buddy. You've got to ask them for this special. They don't advertise it but it's great." He never turned around. I draped my arm over his shoulder and pulled my gun out and stuck it in his ribs. I said, "The special is what happens when you kill young girl's fathers and cut up women's faces." He froze and wetted himself. I told him that he's under arrest and that if he struggled that I'd have no problem shooting him where it really hurts. I pointed my pistol down to his crotch. He whimpered. One of the girls came from the back room with some rope. Madam Molly held John at gunpoint while I tied him up. I thanked them for their help. Missy came up and kissed me. Madam Molly said that I'm more than welcome here any time even just for a visit. I paraded John down the middle of the street. Letting everyone know what he did. I went back to fulfill my promise and delivered John to his latest victim. She had already heard. She was very ready for him. He definitely remembered her. He begged me to let him go. She looked at me and said, "I can do what I want short of killing him right?" I nodded. She gave a cruel smile. She took the rope from me and pulled him down into the basement. There were terrible screams for a long time. I can't bring myself to mention what she did. Afterwards she fetched a cart for me. I had to pull him back as he'll never be able to walk again. How he was still alive is beyond me. I had to cover him with a sheet. I will never make that woman mad. I may have nightmares about this. I didn't tie him up. There was no need to. He wasn't going anywhere on his own. I brought John by The Pasture. Melanie was so happy that I caught him. I wouldn't show her all of him, I couldn't. I showed her his head enough to confirm that he is John Brossard. I then told her what he did and what happened to him. She said that he got what he deserved. I asked her what she was going to do. She said that she was going to kill him, but that she changed her mind. She wanted him to live like this. How cruel. If he was going to survive I had to get him to a doctor. She turned her back to him. I took him by the doctor as I said I would. The doctor said that he'll live, but that he'll never walk, or have use of his arms ever again. I didn't have much against John. So we agreed that the kindest thing we could do would be to put him out of his misery. Doc wouldn't as it was against his oath, so it was up to me. I put one bullet in him and he died. This is not a good start to the year. Doc said that he'll take care of him from here on out. I thanked him and went home.
For some reason I can't bring myself to go inside. I'm cold, and not from the weather. I'm going to sit out here on the back porch for a while. I need a drink.
January 5, 1892
I don't feel near as bad as when I set fire to that shed. I still feel horrible though. I spent most of last night out on the back porch drinking. I'll admit that I also cried a bit. I heard Banit and the kids leave a little while ago. I think I'
Ma found me. I guess she saw me back there. She forced me to come inside. I told her what happened. She sat quietly and hugged me. I tried to take a drink but the bottle was empty. She said that there was no way that I could know what that woman would do and that it wasn't my fault. That I did the right thing by catching him and also putting him down like that. I fully agree with her but what I'm upset about is that I let that woman do that to him. I should have watched her, I should have stopped her. I shouldn't have let her to begin with.
I slept on the couch. Ma left at some point. She had to go work. I didn't notice. Then again I didn't move until Lilly and Bobby came home. I could see it on their faces that they knew just how bad I felt. For some reason I asked them to hit me as hard as they could. They refused at first but I asked them again. Bobby packs a wallop. Lilly couldn't bring herself to do it and hugged me tightly instead. Great, now I feel worse. She sat on the couch so I used her as a pillow. She just quietly patted my head. She never said a thing. I fell asleep again. I woke to a quivering lap. When I looked up, Lilly had a strained expression on her. As soon as I was clear of her she stood and took off running to the bathroom. I couldn't help but laugh. Eventually she'll get to where she'll wake me up. That or finally wet herself. She looked so relieved when she came out. I don't know why but I felt better. I picked her up hugged her and carried her back to the couch. After sitting her in my lap I had her tell me all about her day. She has what I would consider very boring days, but for some reason I found her story very interesting. The more I listened the better I felt. Turns out she has a young admirer. I asked her if I should be jealous or no. She looked me squared in the eyes and said, "Not in the least bit." Poor fellow doesn't stand a chance with her.
The rest of the day I busied myself around the house. I made it a point to hug everyone as they came in.
January 6, 1892
Today was a rather quiet day. Doc came by and said that John's funeral will be this afternoon. I suppose I should attend, I doubt anyone else will. Banit said that she was going to start reading her textbooks today. Grace and Nessa have volunteered to help her and so they're meeting up at the library. Bobby said that the Bancroft's have invited him, Will, and the Warren boys over to play all day. Lilly I imagine will go play with her friends as well. I guess that leaves me all on my lonesome. Since the funeral is just past noon I figured I'd go ahead and dress properly and head that direction.
I was right. Besides the preacher I was the only one in attendance. It was quick and too the point. I help bury him as well. That well could have been me were it not for Ma and Pa taking me in the way they did. Afterwards I went by The Pasture. Melanie was still working hard. Since she was keeping the place so clean that freed up some of the other Girls to tease out a few more drink from our patrons. Melanie was glad to see me. She greeted me, "Oh, the pervert is here." Good to see you too Melanie. I sat down and told her what I did about John. She got mad that I didn't let him suffer but she understood why I did what I did. She said that she will pay me for catching him. I said, "I don't want money for that. Keep it. Earn your keep and you can stay. Earn enough and you can leave whenever you want." I was probably a bit gruff but I just can't bring myself to take payment for something like that. Ma had been working in her office. She saw me and came charging out. She was very excited about something. She stampeded over, picked me up hugging me and kept repeating, "She's coming back!" It took me a second to realize what she's talking about. Cora is coming back. She did say that she'd be moving here at the beginning of the year. With her help Ma could probably work less and have more time to spend with Banit and the kids. Melanie looked extremely confused. Once I calmed Ma down I told her about Cora. I left out the affectionate parts. Ma was so happy she even bought a round of drinks for the house, a grand total of seven patrons at this point. They're good ones though. I left from there and headed over to see Mr. Harcourt. He was busy entertaining some small children with some magic tricks. I helped him out in the store for the rest of the day. I made it home just before dinner. Lilly's cooking is getting better.
We all played games until bedtime.
January 7, 1892
Ma's off today so we spent the day with her. Shopping, cleaning, and generally doing all the normal things. I took us out for dinner tonight. It was very nice to have everyone together. After dinner we returned home and played more games and things until fairly late.
January 8, 1892
Today started off as a normal day. That soon changed. Bobby had run off with Will and the Warren boys to play. Lilly was busy working on a new dress when Charlie came by. I told her that Bobby was out playing, but she shook her head. She said that she wanted to talk to Lilly. I invited her in and brought her to Lilly. She was being strangely quiet. Lilly asked her what was wrong. She mumbled something but I couldn't hear it. Lilly leaned over and asked her again. Charlie held on to the front of her dress and blurted out, "Teach me how to be girly like you!" I swear time stopped. I couldn't believe it. She continued, "You're the girliest person I know. If anyone can teach me how to be a girl you can. So please, teach me." I nearly died. Lilly glared at me and told me to stop laughing. I replied, "Well she's got a point! You are the girliest girl around!" She threw something at me but missed. I stumbled off laughing and apologizing to Charlie. I left them to their girl talk. I did catch a couple of juicy tidbits though. She said that Bobby seems to like it when she dresses up and said that she was cute with the ribbons that Lilly tied in her hair. They talked a long time but I left them alone. I had a job to do. Mrs. Bancroft would love to hear about this sudden change of heart.
I got about halfway to the Bancroft house when it hit me. I shouldn't be the one to tell Charlotte, Charlie should. Instead I just smiled and kept it to myself. By that I mean that I told Mr. Harcourt who got a grand laugh out of it. He won't say anything though. I was going to bust at the seams if I didn't have someone to share this with. We laughed a long time about that. Mr. Harcourt then said that Bobby will probably get married before I do. I started to complain about that but he beat me to it. He said that he knows several girls that would certainly make me a good wife. I saw where this was going so I ran. That's Mr. Harcourt for you. I think he just wanted to tease me.
I was on my way back home and saw Lilly teaching Charlie how to stand up straight and proper. Bobby was nearly home as well so I stopped him and offered to play with him somewhere. I figured it'd be best to let Charlie keep this a secret, for now.
Bobby and I played ball out in the park until nearly dinner when we headed home. There wasn't a trace of Charlie anywhere to be seen. This was a rather quiet evening followed by me walking Lilly to her show. She must have been in a good mood as she was very energetic and her songs had such a happy note to them.
Post script: This is how the year should start.
