DC Profile: Wendigo
#6 of Defense Council Profiles
I have a special place in my heart for Wendigo. I think he might be the most relatable character in my roster aside from maybe Velocity. Hopefully, people will like Wendigo as much as I do!

Known History: Michael Farrell was one of the earliest Defenders recruited to the Defense Council by Mighty Steel himself. Raised in a traditional, Abenaki family, Michael grew up surrounded by the myths and legends of his Native American heritage, including cautionary tales about monsters.
At age fifteen, Michael and his older brother, Tobias, became lost in the woods while on a family hiking trip to the Appalachian Mountains. It was late October and a freak snowstorm caused the two to be separated from their parents. At the time, all the brothers could think about were legends of the wendigo, a horrific monster that lived in the wilderness and fed on the flesh of people. Against all odds, the two boys survived in the snowy woods for nearly a week before they were rescued, but Michael's brother had been permanently scarred by the ordeal. Michael remembers that before their rescue, Tobias had begun asking him to eat his remains to survive if Tobias died before Michael did.
After their ordeal in the woods, Tobias became intensely greedy and had periodic bouts of almost feral, ravenous hunger. To Michael's parents, it was as if he had become a different person and it was a sure sign of "Wendigo Psychosis." They contacted a spiritual healer in an attempt to cure their son and Tobias was visited by said healer many times as the years passed, but none of the remedies had the desired effect. The community became angry with the family due to Tobias' occasional psychotic episodes, which at best involved theft and at worst involved physical assault. Michael witnessed the toll that his brother's mental state was taking on his family and he knew that he was powerless to stop it.
When Michael was nineteen, after living with his mentally unstable brother for four years with no signs of recovery, Michael's parents finally had Tobias Farrell committed to a state mental institution. Tobias was found dead in his room two months later, hanging by his neck from a makeshift rope fashioned from his bed sheets. Review of interviews Tobias had given to the facility's caretakers showed that Tobias genuinely thought that he was possessed by a wendigo spirit, and the suicide note left behind in his room stated that the only way he could make sure that he didn't hurt any more people was to end his own life in a moment when the spirit did not have a hold on him.
Grief from his brother's death hit Michael hard, especially when his weather control powers manifested in full and he realized that he had inadvertently been the reason for his brother's insanity in the first place. Michael states that he visited his tribal leader for advice during that time, going so far as to reveal his abilities during the meeting. The Abenaki leader told him that it was his choice whether or not to view his abilities as a curse or a gift, and that how he chose to honor his brother's memory would be the most important decision of his life.
Michael took those words to heart and decided to engage in vigilantism using the moniker "Wendigo" in an attempt to turn his brother's tragedy into a symbol for justice. At age twenty-eight, after an encounter with Mighty Steel in which the two worked together to detain the violent criminal known as "Thunderbolt", Michael elected to join the Defense Council.
Ability Details: Mr. Farrell has above-average strength and endurance. He can shift and lift weight of up to one ton, as well as maintain a sprint for nearly four minutes. He is able to hold his breath for nearly five minutes. He also possesses expertise in hand-to-hand combat, taught to him by Mighty Steel over the course of his career as a Defender.
Mr. Farrell is unaffected by temperatures as low as -109°F and possibly lower. He was able to dip his hand in a vat of dry ice for several minutes with no adverse effects. He is also naturally resistant to static electricity, lightning strikes, and the electric abilities used by the criminal, Thunderbolt.
Mr. Farrell can manipulate molecules in the air around him, slowing their vibration and cooling the air temperature at alarming rates. By cooling the moisture in the air incredibly quickly and controlling wind motion, he can create various weather effects such as fog, rain, hail, snow, and even violent thunderstorms in localized areas. This ability cannot be maintained outside of a radius of fifty feet from his body. In laboratory tests, he was unable to lower the air temperature around him further than -50°F.
Lastly, Mr. Farrell has the ability to manifest and control ice. He can spontaneously create ice from the palms of his hands and then project that ice forward through the air at speeds of up to sixty miles per hour. He has also used this ability to turn his fists and feet into reasonably effective, ice-coated melee weapons.
Psychologists on staff suggest that Mr. Farrell's use of the name "Wendigo" has proved to be an effective coping mechanism for his brother's unfortunate suicide. During his time with the Defense Council, his demeanor has shifted from a brooding, aloof personality into a reasonably good-natured and jovial one. He is slightly introverted, however, which requires him to take periodic breaks from social settings in order to decompress. Meditative exercises begun by Class B Defender "Deluge" have improved Mr. Farrell's social recovery time significantly. Despite their differences in personality and age, "Wendigo" and "Mighty Steel" have become fast friends and make many public appearances together to represent the Defense Council.
For the above reasons, Michael Farrell, AKA "Wendigo," has been given a Class A Defender designation.
