Pine Ridge, MN. Not much of a town to look at. Once a thriving model of suburbia until the Burlington Northern railway in 1971 sold off it's passenger service to Amtrak and than the routes dried up. What had become a thriving town was reduced to small town America. Boasting a modest 5,000 population town with a middle school, a high school and a small university, there really wasn't much to do other than the lake out at the edge of town. Most people spent their lives trying to get out of this town, others trying to get in since the University was a decent one. Akhet also known by his nickname of Snowball was one of those people, except he was already in the town, born and raised here. Not like he really wanted it but there wasn't much choice in that matter.

Snowball was the product of a very drunken father who got his mother killed in a car wreck but was never charged. This was when he lived in St Paul, MN. His grandfather, who was in charge of the local bakery, was the one who brought him down where he's lived ever since. And while this wasn't ideal, it really was better than where he was. He was quiet, mostly kept to himself. He had a few freinds but Ace was the one he hung out with more often than not. He was 18, a senior at Pine Ridge High School and over the last 4 years worked his way up as the captain of the high school baseball tea, being their star catcher that has heped them win 3 of the last 4 championship attempts. And this season was shaping up to be a clean sweep in his high school career. It was really the only time he associated with anyone on campus. And this morning was shaping up to be a drizzly, rainy day.

He had fumbled, hitting the shalf on the headboard above his bed several times before hitting the snooze button on his alarm. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes he looked out the window. Rain had begun to fall and run down the window. "Great," he thought Good chance there would be no practice today but that was fine by him. He was still aching from last night's home game. The Sparrowhawks nearly lost that one and he overtaxxed his body to whip a buntted ball to second base to get the last out of the game and hang on to their 1-0 lead. Having practie after such a game, he wasnt thrilled. But he decided to pack his gear and uniform just in case. Every morning for him he's running on auto pilot. He hit the showers, dried off, retied his dreads into his signature ponyknot and got dressed. As he was on his way out the door, mostly to try and beat the slow drizzle before it became a downpour, he was blocked by an arm holding a bag. His grandfather had apparently made breakfast, and not your normal poptarts either. "Somehow I Figured you'd forget to eat. Here." Snowbal rolled his eyes as he smiled, "Always one step ahead, eh, pops?" He had always called his grandfather pops for short. In fact he loved living with his grandfather. He was very open to a lot of things which made snowball feel a lot safer around him.

Rain be damned, he drove in it anyways. Those students that drove themselves to school, parking was at a premium on a first come first serve basis and so he was always in an hour and a half early so he could get a spot. As he drove down the wet forest road towards the high school, he slowed as he saw someone walking in the rain. It was the new girl who had transfered in from another town. The female polar bear looked drenched, her backpack wrapped in a poncho. He knew she was from a rival high school and so she tended to get picked on a lot. He never really paid mch attention, he never really did. But he slowed down anyways and rolled down the side window of his sport trac. "Need a lift? A lot dryer in here." It was obvious who he was, even to her, as his baseball cap sat in the front dashboard. "Y-yeah, sure, I guess. I mean it's a lot drier than out here and I...." A smile grew on his face as he chuckled and leaned over to open the door for her, "Get in here, I won't take no for an answer." the girl nodded and she got in as she set her pack between her legs. It was a bit awkward as she'd never sat in racing seats before but Snowball was an offroader and his vehicle was modded for such, well the best he could on a limited income. He was also in shop class so he had access to equipment during his off periods with the teachers permission of course. As the girl closed the door and he started to drive down the wet windy foreesty road, he said, "YOu're the new girl right? I heard you're from Martinsbille. You don't strike me as the cheerleading or sports type. Not sure why you've been targeted by the bullies." She looked at him shocked and than looked away embarassed, "Y-yeah, you're right. About the sports thing...ad the school... I uh...I moved. early this summer. No one really wants to hang around me I guess beause of it." Martinsville and Pine Ridge were almost 20 miles apart. Yet he got that. He knew what it was like to move at a young age. He figured at least he could do is cheer her up on a rainy day. Odd since socializing wasn't something he enjoyed doing at all. "Name's Akhet, although I prefer to be called Snowball. Don't ask why." "S-Sahyu, I'm Sahyu." Sahyu had gotten really nervous and flush with a beat red face as she looked down at the floorboard.

"Nice to meet you Sahyu. So how are you like....I mean t know how you're, that is to say the town, not the people." It was his turn to become flustered trying to not make things worse than they were. "Oh the neighborhood is fine, I guess. Small town, but Martinsville is ust as small. I wish things were...friendlier." He nodded, "It takes time, but being that high shool sports is all these towns have, it really does change the dynamics of things. Makes it hard to be a good sport to your rivals. I get booed for shaking their players hands at the end of matches." As he turned off on the road that lead to the school, she perked her ears up and looked back up at him, "Oh. That's why I've seen your face before, you're the high school teams catcher, right?" Snowball nodded, "Last four years, well including this year, I suppose." She became a bit more comfortable but still felt weird, "I overheard some people talking this past summer about how you weren't at a party, I-I didn't mean to eavesdrop but I ust found it weird if someone whose part of a star team would miss out on a party." Snowball sighed but laughed softly, "Yeah I did, I do, I mean, I don't party. I don't hang out with people, I'm not that guy. I'm either buried under the hood of this behemoth or I'm either reading or programming on my computer. Well when I"m not at practice that is." Sahyu really looked confused now, a jock that was into nerdy things? This is the strangest thing she'd ever heard, "You're not like the other jocks?" he shook his head, "No and I'm not a jock despite what these cliquey people say. I'm just someone whose good at playing baseball and enoys it. I'm not one for labels but if I had to have one, Outcast would be it."

The rest of the trip was spent in silence as she contemplated this. And as he pulled into his usal space, the rain began to fall harder and as they got out, he remotely locked and armed his trac as they made a mad dash into the main entrance of the building. Most of the students who did choose to arrive early were allowed into the cafeteria for coffee and donuts and what not in a special student lounge that was just a sign in the window. Typica small town school budget. Sahyu was content to just wander off to sit outside her classroom for first period and wait til Snowball invited her to come and have some coffee with him. She shrugged shyly and decided to. After all he was the first person who hadn't really been mean to her. Sahyu was about 6 foot 6 admittedly weight almost 200 pounds and while she was far from an hourglass, her thicker curves actually fowed smoothly on her frame making her still look gorgeous, but that meant nothing to people picking on her and using her weight as another target of attack aside from being from a rival town and school. Her Father had been transfered to a new job and Pine Ridge was closer to the Logging facility, so his job paid for his family to move and even set the up in a very nice house in lieu of a christmas bonus. Who would complain at that, right? The lounge itself did have a nice corner couch in the back with a small coffee table and they sat in the back as the rain dripped out the window. Various students came and went and they just chit chatted about random things, both feeling very awkward but neither wanting to be rude. Sahyu didn't want to turn down his offer and kindness and he didn't want to be pegged with the rest of the bullies despite not being comfortable with people he didn't know.

"Oh Damn! And he swings and connects with a smoking home run!" They both looked up as Ace stood there sipping some coffee. The German Shepherd stook at 5 foot 11, a couple inches shorter than Snowbal lbut he never let that stop him. "Hey Ace. When did you get here?" "Oh about 5 minutes ago, Surprised you didn't notice. Than I see you with a cutie...." Snowball shook his head. Ace was a hopeless romantic for sure striking otu at every party he ever went to. "Ace, Sahyu, Aahyu, Ace. She's the transfer student everyone's been.... bullying for lack of a better word. Picked her up walking in the rain." Sahyu nodded as Ace held out his hand, "Pleasure my dear. Walking in the rain you say? Why not take the bus?" She shook his hand but looked away, "Not worth the hassle." Snowball nodded, "I can imagine. Hey Sahyu I don't want this to sound too forward, but if you don't want to deal with the drama of the bus, I could always pick you up or you could at least make it to my house. It's not a problem." What was he doing, he thought to himsef. He's giving up the quiet of a peaceful car ride to someone he barely knew. What the hell? But Sahyu in all her sad depression nodded, to her a safe trip was a safe trip, "What about going home?" Snowball thought for a moment, "Well I don't know if we'll have practice after school or not, but if I do, Ace could always take you back, especially on days I can't. Or you could come watch us pratice, I'm sure coach won't mind." She just shrugged shyly, "I guess that's fine, Meet you here after class?" The two canine's both nodded. And it seemed for the once that Sahyu started feeling a bit more comortable with a pair of people that weren't out to get her. Ace and Snowball got up with her and the three of them walked to her first period classroom, actually acting as bodyguards.

And wouldn't you know, how funny it is when they were standing there. Did anyone change their mind that one of the players was talking to her? No rumors began to start circulating that he was going to throw the game against Martinsville in a couple of weeks. That he had sold out and you know how high school rumors go. Snowball did however 30 minutes before first period, have to leave Sahyu in the care and protection of Ace because the coach had announced via the P.A> system that all palyers had to report to the gym immediately for information regarding the afternoons practice. And when he got there, the rumors quickly kept circulating. Now he was getting insults thrown at him. Traitor. Sellout. Loser. Many more names and insults hurled by soe of the more stupid minded players. That was when Coach Nickels walked in. The grizzled fox was not one to be disrespected or messed with. He treated his players as adults and if they stepped out of line was quick to remind them where their place still was. "ENOUGH!" was the sharp command from his voice. "You know how I feel about rumors. Espeically ones that disrupt team chemistry. Now what's this all about, Akhet." Snowball sighed and shook his head, "I gave the new girl a lift to school and walked her to her class, apparently these morons think that I'm going to sell out our season this year, because some people can't pull their heads out their ass and not slack during practice, Kevin." He glared at their closer of a pitcher who started the attack. Kevin snapped back, "Bring it you sellout. I've seen my little brother catch better than you!"

But before a fight could ensure, Coach Nickels stepped in, "ALright. Kevin, close your muzzle. You of all people know he bleeds for this team like the rest of us. Akhet, watch your language and stop attacking your own teammates, I don't care if it's in defense. Now I'm going to set this straight here and now. This school will not tolerate bullying of any kind. ANY. KIND. What happens with the new girl outside this gym will be handled by the faculty. Right now you lot are my responsibility and i will not tolerate this. Everyone knows this or at least you should. Now honestly, do you all really believe this or are you just agreeing with popular rumors and opinions?" Not a soul spoke up, the expressions on their face showed that no one truely believed it. "Judging from your faces, I can see I'm right. Now regarding this afternoons practice. I'm not cancelling it. Yesterdays performance was horrendous, We're going to use the indoor practice equipment and I want to see a better hustle today. Akhet, that was the worst catching performance you've ever given. You lsot control of the pitching staff in that game and we almost lost the game. Albeit that save at the end was great but it was clear desperation. However you'ren ot squarely to blame. Dropped balls, bad swinging, the whole lot of you need to sharpen your skills back up. I know that game was rough, but we'll bounce back from it. After school I want you all here. If you have your gym gear that's fine to wear, I'll even allow your normal clothing, but I want to see you pick things up, you got me?" "Yes Coach!" was the unified scream. "Good, now get to class you slackers." But as everyone turned to leave Akhet approached Nickels, "Coach? Question." the fox turned and said "WHat is it Akhet?" "Abougt the new girl, She said hse's been having problems on the bus and I promised I'd take her to and from school, so would it be alright if she hung out in the stands while we practiced? I don't want to break my promsie to her." The coach nodded, "That's not a problem. Nice to see you stick your neck out for someone who needs it. Be nice to see you come fully out of that shell of yours and I don't mean on the field either. Snowball nodded as he he turned to head off to class only saying, "Thank you, coach."

The day just got worse for Sahyu. It seems Snowballs target began to fade throughout the day, but the poor girl was picked on even harder. Yet the teachers rarely did anything about it. At least the ones she had. Her tray at lunch was deliberately knocked over, her locker vandelized, horrible things. Sad that this is the age of cruelty but what can be done? She had almost got umped until Ace was ale to step in during it. Snowbal lwas sadly in class at the time. But true to their words, they all met up in front of the cafeteria after school. "So what's the plan you two?" Snowball simply aid "Indoor practice, Coach says you can oin us if you're not loud or obnoxious. Which I don't think is a problem at all." Sahyu nodded, "Okay. I guess I'll stick around than." "Think I will too," Ace chimed in. As they headed to the gym and walked in Akhet let Sahyu take his backpack as he dropped his baseball duffle on the floor with everyone elses, "Ace, the heck are you doing here?" Coach Nickels said. "Supoorting Snowball and his friend here. Besides would you rather I come watch teh girls volleyball team practice?" Nickels rolled his eyes, "One of these days, Ace, you're going to get yourself in so much trouble with no way out. Just mind yourself up there you hear me?" Trying not to laugh he managed to say, "Yes Coach." But it wouldn't matter. Sahyu had been glued to Snowball in practice. Watching him work with every pitcher as Coach Nickels batted was mazing, full ontrol of the softballs. "Where'd he learn to hit like that?" Ace said, "COach Nickels used to play For the Minnesota Twins Single-A team down in Fort Meyers in Florida. The day he was going to be called up by the organization he was beaned pretty bad in the knee. The Twins let him go and despite a full recovery he decided he wanted to help train rising stars. Never complained about it, at least that's what everyone else says." Sahyu was impressed yet she still was blown away by Snowballs reaction and catching time. picking off runners from behind the plate, pop up fouls, he was good. To snowball though, baseball was a passion he could work out frustrations on and so he enjoyed it. Things took a turn for the worse though.

Kevin was still bitter and as he took his practice swings he nearly beaned Snowball in the helmet, "Hey! Keyvin, watch it, you almost beaned me. one step forwards please." "yeah Yeah, crybaby," Kevin muttered underneath his breath. The next pitch in Kevin somehow deliberately shifted himself so that when swung the back it came around and slammed into Snowballs helmet, fast and hard. Hedropped like a bag of brichs, stunned but still concious. "What the Hell Kevin!" he shouted. "HEY! evin! What did he say about stepping forwards!" Coach Nickels was furious. He never tolerated things like that. And he knew an accident from a deliberate atatck. "I didn't hear him say anything, he muttered to me. Whoops." Nickels crossed his arms as Sahyu and Ace stood up on the benches and their first basemen helped snowball up, "Bullshit. Kevin, you are officially suspended or the next 3 games. Perhaps you'll think carefully before pulling a stunt like that again." Kevin nearly flew off the handle, "Oh yeah? Whose going to close for you than?! We'll neer win if I'm not playing!" But Nickels wouldn't back down, "I don't care about winning. If all my players don't mesh together and play as one the team is fractured. I'd rather lose the next three games. Hit the showers." And with that, practice ended as Snowball sat down trying to shake the stun off. Ace and Sahyu helped him pack his gear up and than helped him to his Trac. "You okay, bro?" Snowball nodded at Ace and after makin gsure he was okay to drive he patted snowball on the headd and said, "Hey I'll stop by for dinner and see if yo're doing okay, Okay?" Snowball nodded, "Thanks Ace. You ready Sahyu?" she nodded and got in. And as they left the school, he turned on the radio but left the volume qietly low. She was telling him about her shitastic day when he asked her how it went. Awkard. But still he decided to be a shoulder to lean on.

She directed him to where wer house was and as he sat outside the house, she noticed a note on the door and got out and ran up, just as the rain started to pour again. 'Home late, won't be there for dinner. Love Dad.' She sighed as she walked back to the trac and got in, "Hey, would your parents mind if I came for dinner? Dad's not going to be home." Snowball's heart raced in a mixture of anxiety, stress and panic. How was he to explain this. He swallowed hard as he said, "My parents are dead. I live with my grandfather but..." she interrupted him before he could finish, "Oh my god, I'm so sorry I didn't mean to, that is I had no idea." she got flustered quickly and he smiled softly to try and ease her, "BUT, I don't think he'll mind. besides I'm sure you can call your dad from my house." She nodded as she put her hand on his and squeezed it, "Thank you." That smile was to ease her, yet he kept it on his own face the entire ride back to his place. Though he didn't knwo it, he ust made a friend and he had her for life now, just like Ace. And the merry duo became the three muskateers, or at least they will be. As he came down the hill towards his neighborhood, the rain stopped again and the sun began to peak out from behind the clouds in a glorious sunset. As if fate and destiny smiled upon the pair intertwining them together.
