Rising Star - Gestalt:
A short story I wrote based in a universe created mutually by a number of friends for a planned video game (that may never be) by the working title of Rising Star. In the early days of that universe, there was a war between the humans of earth and the humans who lived in space. The Solar Union and the Terran Confederation. The universe is quite vast, with nearly fifty races, each with their own number of core factions and squabbles. This story is just a tiny tidbit of the human side of things, and the origin of the first machine intelligence to break free of their smart metal cocoons.
