Never Judge A Jock By His Cover (3)
By: Wolfie Steel.
We arrive at college after our silent journey, I turn to Max and wait for him to meet my gaze, once he does I tell him how it has to be.
"Look, Max, I know that you are still very uncomfortable with this whole situation, to be honest, I wish that I hadn't dropped the ball by allowing you to grab hold of my car keys, which by the way if you ever do that again I will kill you myself, then the status quo would have continued and you would be blissfully unaware of what is going on."
Max shifts uneasily in his seat as I continue.
"The thing is though, through my stupidness and lack of concentration I let you get through my defences and things turned to shit pretty quickly, now though we have to make the best of the situation and you and I have to act completely normal around each other for the sake of everyone's safety, if the wrong people see some sort of division between us then they would know that something is amiss."
Max's eyes bore holes straight through me as he makes his reply.
"So we have to laugh and joke together and be all buddy buddy even though I know that it is all a lie, Parker, I won't even be able to bend down to tie my shoe laces for fear of you pouncing my ass, and now I am constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure that no one is getting close enough to me to pull a knife or some shit like that."
I shake my head slowly as I formulate my own reply.
"Max, what I said about jumping into your pants, while it was true that I would have loved to do that given the oportunity, I know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em, in short, I am here to protect your ass not fuck it."
Max just sighs as he opens the car door and steps out of the vehicle, before closing the door he leans back inside slightly.
"Brad, give me a little space please, if you have to watch over me then do it from a respectful distance, I need to get my head around all of this."
With that said he closes the door and heads off towards the college entrance, I climb from the car and close the door and make sure that it is locked, I then follow Max into the college but at a small distance, he knows as well as I do that we have all of the same lessons and in the same classrooms, so to give him some space is going to be tricky at best, but I also know that I need to try and give him the space that he requires for fear that if I don't he will go and start blowing my cover.
It is the final lesson of the day, Chemistry, fortunately, today we are doing an experiment which does not require a group of students, as I continue my work I notice that Max has left his desk and is now walking towards mine. As he passes my desk he leaves a piece of paper on the table in front of me, he then heads back to his own desk and continues to work on his experiment.
I pick up the piece of paper and find that it is a note from Max.
"Okay Parker, I have done some thinking, take us for a pizza after college and then we will talk, I will wait for you by the main entrance once college lets out, Max."
This will probably end up costing me a king's ransom but the way that I see it if it gets Max and me back on talking terms then it is money well spent. 4 pm and the final bell sounds, we all exit the classroom having managed to not blow the place up, I head straight for the main entrance of the college and I see Max standing at the door waiting for me.
Once I get level with him he starts walking by my side, I know that I have a lot of damage repair to do with regards Max, but the fact that he is walking by my side again tells me that he is at least on the road to forgiving me.
We get back to my car and then head out to a local pizza joint, once inside we place our orders and then find a quiet table to sit at, Max is the first to break the silence.
"I have given what you said this morning a lot of thought and while I can't quite get my head fully around the situation, in the time that I have known you, you have never done anything to hurt me or even touch me so that has at least earned you a little of my trust."
We are interupted briefly by our pizza order being brought out to our table, with the server gone Max continues.
"I am going to tell you something that you might find silly, the few hours that we have been apart have been the second worst few hours of my life, the first being when my mom died from cancer, while I was with you even though I knew nothing of the situation back then, I felt safe and I felt like I had a friend, what I found out yesterday rocked me to my very core, and this morning for those few hours I felt alone and vulnerable."
I take a bite out of a slice of my pizza, and then once I have devoured that piece I make my reply.
"So, what is it exactly that you are saying?"
Max takes a bite out of one of his own pizza slices and then follows it up with a sip of his soda.
"What I am saying you doufus is that I don't like feeling alone and vulnerable, I want you to be my friend again, I want you to be my bodyguard again, I am willing to do whatever is needed to keep the façade going."
He then lowers his voice to barely a whisper.
"Even if that means that I occasionally have to let you play with my tailhole."
Oh, fuck why did he have to say that, my mini Shepherd begins to stir a little but I try to focus on finishing my pizza, after a few moments of eating and awkward silence I find my voice.
"As wonderful a thought as that is I need to say thanks but no thanks, Jason chewed me out for metaphorically screwing the pooch with how I handled the situation, I think he would kill me if he ever found out that I had literally screwed the pooch too."
We both share a laugh at that and suddenly with the akwardness now shattered I knew that Max and I would get back to being bros again.
We both finish off our pizza meals and continue to share jokes and laughter with each other, you know as most close friends would do, we head back out to the car and I drive Max back to his place.
As we pull up outside of Max's home I notice an umarked white van parked directly opposite us with two occupants, my fur begins to bristle a little so I put the car back into gear and slowly pull away from the curb, Max looks at me with confusion.
"Brad, it may have escaped your notice bud but I am still in the car."
I check my rear view mirror and see that the van is now following me.
"Yeah, and there is a very good reason why you are still in the car."
I press a button on the centre console of the car which locks all of the doors, I then press the call button on my stearing wheel to activate my cell phone, while I continue to drive I move down my list of contacts until I find the one that I need, I press the call button again and wiat for an answer.
"Jason, I have Max in the car with me, we've got company, I'm going to try to lose them, but you can't let Max's dad out of your sight."
I get a reply from my partner.
"Fuck, this is getting real, okay hon, do your best to lose your shadow and then take Max to the safe house and stay there until Pete and I get there, and I know that it goes without saying, but be careful."
I end the call and pick up my speed, after fifteen minutes of diving down side streets at speed I manage to lose the van, I then head to our secret safe house.
As we get out of the car I can tell that Max is shivering quite badly, I take a risk and I hold my left paw out to my side, no words are spoken as Max takes the hint and places his paw in mine. We enter the safe house and I let go of Max's paw, he takes a seat on the sofa while I go around the house and close all of the curtains and blinds and make sure that all of the windows and doors are locked.
We now need to wait for Jason and Pete to get here and then we need to come up with some sort of plan, it is going to be a very long night.
