The World Eater - Chapter 1: The Misguided Planet
#1 of The World Eater
Please tell me your thoughts. There will be more.
"It started three days ago." Came the voice of a young, teenager male. "A new moon showed up in our sky." The voice seemed shaken as though reliving a nightmare. "At first, the priests called this a sign from the gods. It would double the rate the crops grew, and they where right." As if drawn into his words the picture of the world is drawn out around the voice.
The day seemed to be a normal day. The sun rose in the sky filled with four moons, two of which had different colored rings around them. The sky itself glowed it's brilliant golden color, causing the red grass of the planet to have a soft shine from the morning dew. The wind of the sulfuric air held a gentle southern breeze.
But by the middle of the day, the air seemed to change, and portions of the planet began to have small seismic tremors in regions where this had never happened in all the planets long history. But all of this passed by nightfall. And that she also when a new and mysterious orb appeared. It was in orbit around the planet, as though it had always been there.
"But that's also when all the missings began. People disappear overnight. And not just them, but all their belongings. Most dismissed it as 'unhappy people'. But that wasn't always the case." The voice trembles, as though trying to hold back tears.
After a moment of the voice letting out a bit of soft crying, "It took my mommy." Again, the world shapes around the memory of the boy's words.
The image of a room, walls build from a purple colored stone, considered to be high class meterial for building. The walls decorated with pictures, each in a different frame, showing the boy and his family together, during events though different points in the family life. The floor made of sturdy blue wood, with a decorative throw rug made of black and pink animal fur. The boy's parents lay in bed, sleeping, holding one another.
They wake as they see their son had entered the room. Though tired, they smiled at the boy. Their yellow eyes filled with love, their pail blue arms held out to embrace the boy. Then time slows.
The bedroom window breaks violently inward. The father moving to shield the boy. Then darkness. "Don't watch. Close your eyes. Mother and I will keep you safe." After that. Screams. Mommy is caught by something. Father yells out. "Let her go!"
"There where gunshots." The boy recalls hearing the sound of plasma rounds going off. But after, silence. The World returns in slivers like looking between two fingers at first. Slight images of Father, laying on the floor, gun a few inches from his three fingered hand. Then fully as the sight of mommy held in the air, some strange vine looking tentacle wrapped almost completely around her. Mommy's arm reaching out to her boy. "Then, at the same surprise as it's entrance, it was gone. Mommy gone with it." The voice ends and the crying begins again.
As the real world returns to the boy, his surroundings become real. He lay out on the couch in his therapist's office. She sat in the chair across from him. When she noticed him looking at her. She nods her head. "Mhhm, mhhm."
She jots down a few notes then look up at the boy. "So. You believe that the moon the gods gave us is actually a monster that, what, steals people?" She wasn't accusing the boy of anything, simply questioning what the boy believed.
He shook his head. "No. I just don't think it's really a moon." The boy sat up and cupped his forehead in his hand. "But. With how many missings there have been lately, I bet you hear all sorts of theories." The boy tried to smile off his notions. He wanted to believe, like everyone else that their gods where grateful and giving.
"About as many as I have heard that statement." She smiles and lets off a soft chuckle. "And your mother ended up among the missings yesterday, yes?" She asked as she looked down at her notes.
The boy nods. "At the rotation of Jiltah, The red ringed moon." The boy stood up and walked to the window, looking up to the blue ringed moon, Haltah, the second moon. Being high in the sky with the moon of my story tailing Haltah. He blinked a moment, then rubbed his eyes. Could it be possible. Could this new moon be slowly drawing nearer to Haltah? He shook it off. Shouldn't think ill of the gods.
A bell rings on the theorist's desk. The boy looks over to her. "Times up?" He asked with a worried tone to his voice. He steps away from the window a moment to watch as she got up to turn off the bell. Then turned his gaze back up to the moons. The new moon no closer then it was last he looked, he shook his head. His mind must be trying to trick him.
"I'm afraid so. But. I would like to see you again. Maybe by third moon tomorrow?" She asked. The boy knew this was a common question for a therapist, and he couldn't fault her for trying to get another session out of him, and his wallet. "We will see. I still need to visit father in the Medic Ward." The boy turned to leave and put on a smile. "I will give you a call if I need you, Doctor Juker." He picks up his pack and hefts it over his should before running out the door.
Later in the day, during the passing of Yitah, the moon of green stone and originally the third moon, before the new moon's appearance. The boy sat at home, changing from channel to channel of the news monitor, listening to the reports of the long day. He glanced over to the device displaying the time. 456:49, nearing the fall of the sun and the coming of darkness. He sighs as he settles on a channel to listen to the reports. .....
... "Scientists are now saying that our new moon seems to be moving. By mid Haltah, the new moon was three million miles in distance from Haltah. And now, by mid Yitah, it is less then four hundred miles, bearly out of reach of Haltah's ring. Scientists believe that the two moons may collide with one another before Faltah's even breaks its rising peak.".....
The boy gasped. He was right. The new moon was chasing Haltah. "The gods are in danger" he ran outside and looked to the north, where he could catch the glimpse of the slowly vanishing new moon. "I fear dark days my be ahead for our world."
As the reporter has said, by the rising of Faltah, the moon of radiant blue metal and first of the moons, the sky filled with a thunderous crack. The boy woke to the sound and rushed to see the reports on the news. "That's right, Lob, Haltah is indeed being..... Devoured by the new moon. Scientists now say that this is no moon, but a true god, showing us that we have false beliefs.".... The boy shut off the new and screamed out in anguish. Not because everything he believed he was now being told he was wrong, but because Haltah was the moon he prayed to every night. Was the moon he loved so dearly that he had plans the enter into the priesthood on his next birth moon. The boy harbor been devastated.
"It took the Creature eight moon cycles to devour all the gods." Came the voice of the boy, now a young man. "And now, the moon grows larger by the day. Coming closer to the planet itself. Scientists say that any minute now, it will devour the planet itself." Yellow eyes filled with anguish and hated at the thing that he could almost throw a stone at with his planets low gravity. "Just end it already!" The young man yells out in frustration. As though answering his prayer, the creature split open, and with the passing of but a single breath, everything went black with the sound of a crack
