Detective Work

A very short telling that details the aftermath transformation of two people who became 'insect like' creatures some time ago.

It was late at night in the detective's office. At the desk sat a man smoking a cigar with a lone fan that blew at him as he looked over the various case files of missing people, and strange insects.

Two missing people were named Rachel and Alex, a man and a woman. It took a few weeks, but the police investigated the room the people had vanished in. While they had found no trace of Rachel and Alex, they did find two strange insects that, while at first the police just wanted to shoo away, there was something about both of the insects' intelligence that drove their curiosity.

The two insects sat inside the detective's office in a glass cage quietly. While they could have been taken to a science lab for observation, there was something about the insects that just felt so off, as if they had human intelligence, but just couldn't always show it. Scientists had already taken x-rays, along with other things. There was a mountain of paperwork about the two insects, and how unnatural they were.

First there was the fly. The fly creature was actually the most insect out of the couple. It ate like a fly, it cleaned itself like a fly, and it flew around like one too, although with a hint of oddness to the way it flew around. The fly was female based on its anatomy. Scientists had clearly seen it lay eggs which were taken away to study. The scientists also studied its brain activity and noticed that the fly was significantly more active when it came to thoughts than any other fly studied before it. It could also identify basic shapes and colors, and it seemed to have intelligence to a varying degree, smarter than any other fly out there. It could hear as well as any other fly could, and it seemed to behave just like any other fly, although it was intelligent enough to avoid traps that a fly would otherwise find itself getting caught in. Even when there was a fly swatter, it was intelligent enough to fly out of reach of the swatter itself.

Then, there was the maggot. The maggot was the strangest creature out of the couple by far. Scientists couldn't identify what species it even was. The size of the maggot was about the same as the fly, and its body was nothing short of amazing. It had two black beady eyes that were unblinking. One could guess that it had night vision. It also seemed to express the same kind of intelligence as the fly, with brain waves similar to that of the fly, and in fact, a human. The maggot had massive rows of sharp teeth which were a first on any creature that small. One could guess it was a carnivore, but its size was so tiny that its sharp teeth couldn't even pierce human skin. Scientists fed it a variety of things out of curiosity and found it ate almost anything deemed edible, at least by insect standards. It lacked bones, though it had many insides that would resemble an insect.

The maggot could also be dropped from tall heights and be just fine. There were nerves in the maggot that indicated it could feel pain, but it was impossible to kill it by causing it to fall. It lacked bones. Even the teeth it had were just made to look like some sort of hard bone, when they were made out of something bizarre scientists couldn't identify.

What amazed scientists most about the fly and maggot was their ability to reproduce. They had seen it in action, and it was unlike anything they had seen before. The maggot had a small 'cock', while the fly had a small interior at the very end of its body. The maggot would penetrate the fly and fertilize the eggs on the inside, and then the fly would lay those fertilized eggs. What they hatched into was anyone's guess.

There was one more thing that scientists could not explain. The maggot and fly seemed to have a fixation on the missing person posters, notably Rachel and Alex. One might think that these two insects WERE Rachel and Alex, but taking DNA from an insect was unheard of, let alone trying to compare it to a human! Still, the two insects were definitely worth studying, especially considering the two were alive well beyond the average lifespan of what most insects would have lived.

Rachel and Alex were both relieved, and still horrified at their situation. They could hear what went on, although the voices of humans boomed loudly and echoed, they could still pick it up. It was hard for Alex to see perfectly with the eyesight of a fly, but she managed, even if it was incredibly disorienting at times.

Both Rachel and Alex were able to hear from the humans how well one another was off in terms of their new bodies. The two had each other, but they had no idea how the other felt in their new body.

Alex heard about Rachel being little more than a fly that was smarter, and there were few other different details about her besides her odd reproduction ability, but it was just passed off as a bizarre mutation.

Rachel heard that Alex was fed a variety of small things, and he could eat most things that were either plant based, or animal based, and his body preferred older material, the kind of stuff one might find in a garbage. She could tell that his hearing was marked as 'poor', but so was hers.

Neither had their sense of smell or taste, so it didn't really matter how 'good' whatever they ate was, just that it worked for their bodies to digest. The two crapped, but it was extremely tiny. Both were surprised to hear that the other still even used the bathroom! Neither could control their rectum though, so whatever waste dropped, just dropped when it was ready.

The detective's office, and the police, were far more worried about the two missing people than putting forth a ton of effort into studying the bizarre insects that came out of that motel. One thing was for sure though, if one believed in transformative magic, one could easily see these insects being the missing people. The hotel would deny it up and down, and Rachel definitely seemed to experience some kinds of excitement whenever her name was mentioned, or pictures of her or Alex were brought up, but few paid attention to her during these times. What few people noticed her passed it off as coincidence. There was no way that fly could have been human. At least, that's what the scientists told themselves. Still, they were all hesitant to perform anything against these insects that might cause harm.
