But Kohn never was there himself, so he couldn't dismiss or verify the stories spread by the curious masses. He only dealt with some of the creatures coming from this very forest. His father on the other hand told him many tales about the adventures he had in Siba. None of those tales contained giant turtles or tribes of living trees. And about colorful swarms of glowing insects commanded by the Queen of Moths.

Alois now looked at where the wolf was pointing.

The sun was shining brightly down onto them. It was the middle of beautiful summer day. But the forest Kohn pointed at was veiled in darkness. The area beneath the treetops was pitch black. It seemed like every single ray of light was getting absorbed by the tall pine trees.

If the guardians worked so fervently to keep people out, why was Kohn so sure they could get inside? That was the question going through the rabbit's mind. "Those forest folk people obviously don't like strangers inside Siba. So what makes you think we will get past them?"

The atmosphere was getting gloomier and scarier by the second. Kohn kept walking closer to the pitch-black forest while talking to the rabbit. "The forest of Siba is one of the biggest woodlands of the continent. So far it has not been claimed by any of the kingdoms, and besides the cities built by the guardians, it is untouched by any kind of civilization. The flora and fauna beyond the midnight circle is unique and the beasts living there are rarely seen anywhere outside of Siba. To protect all of that the guardians created a ring of pitch-black woods surrounding the inner forest. But they told the secret on how to get past it to a few lucky individuals."

Alois tightly clung to the wolf carrying him. "T-they created those dark woods? So they are...mages?"

Kohn shook his head. "No, I don't think so. My father said they planted the seeds for the midnight circle in ancient times, thousands of years ago. And over time they learned how to use the sentient plants growing there, to protect the enchanted forests beyond the circle. But my father is one of the few people who learned how to traverse this dark thicket."

The sunlight was almost gone now that the wolf walked past the first few tree trunks. With glowing paint runes were sketched onto the barks of the outermost trees. Before Alois could ask, Kohn answered the question. "Warnings. Or let's say: the recommendation to turn around now."

The bunny pushed his face against the wolf's chest. "We are inside now, Kohn. Are they already watching us? Are there any...killer plants nearby?"

The wolf stroked the back of the rabbit's head. "Everything is safe, Alois."

The wolf pulled out a wooden flute. It was covered with green tribal signs and only had a single tone hole. Kohn put it against his lips and blew into the small instrument. Rhythmically he put a finger over the tone hole and changed the pitch in a rehearsed pattern.

"H-how much further, Kohn?" said the bunny with a voice on the verge of crying.

Kohn tightened his grip on the rabbit's hand. "I can see a clearing! With sunlight from above! We are almost there, Alois."

The teenager took a few deep breaths and concentrated on walking the last few miles. Suddenly he felt a familiar warmth hitting the top of his head. Alois looked up and saw...the sky! The beautiful blue sky and the sun shining down on them. In the middle of the pitch-black forest was an illuminated spot, like an oasis surrounded by a nightmarish world.

At the center of the clearing grew a giant flower bud. It was an orchid with black and white petals. The flower was closed and had no stem. It just floated in a pool of silvery water. The glowing moth swarm encircled the big orchid a few times, before they scattered and flew away into all directions.
