Cathrine shifted in the driver's seat, attempting to stretch out a little. She hated long car trips, and this one was worse than most others she'd had to endure, since her entire life seemed to be packed up into the boxes in the back seat and in the trunk. She was moving to college. Not just any college, this was a university that had been carefully researched and picked out of a hundred others for it's reputation. She sighed and glanced at the time, then to her GPS unit on the dash of her compact, turning down her radio to say in a clear tone, "Remaining Time"
'Three hours, thirty minutes' Came the automated voice.
Cathrine groaned and looked to the time again, a day and a half behind schedule. At least that nice lady she'd talked to over her cell the day before was understanding of what had happened the day before. Of course, Cathrine hated having to deal with situations like that, but that couldn't be helped. She sighed and stared at the road as she drove before saying firmly, "Insert detour, find nearest gas station."
The directions began, seemed she was less then thirty minutes from one. Cathrine hoped the people at this new station were better then the ones she'd met the day before, when she'd had her tire sliced by the gas station attendant, then the police ignore her once they'd arrived. At least that Mechanic up the road hadn't balked at her, She was sure he'd over charged her though for simply changing a tire. At least she'd had her own spare to use, digging her tire out from under her boxes had been an interesting task though.
Cathrine sighed at the memory as she turned into the gas station, into one of the corners of the lot and turned off her car, eyeing the new station for a few moments. Sometimes she really hated being 'different'. She grunted and sighed, tucking her cell, wallet and keys into her jacket's pockets, before opening the door and stepping out carefully. She paused by the door a moment before twisting and slamming it closed, making sure everything was clear as the door closed. Cathrine sighed and stretched out, cracking her back and letting tense muscles relax as much as they would, reflecting in the reason why her tires had gotten slashed in the first place.
Cathrine was a Mosaic, and not just a 'normal' one. She was different even for her kind, what the doctors had called a natural born hybrid. To start at the bottom and go up, her feet had the width, strength and shape of a wolf's, except for the fact she could retract her claws like a cat could, all of which were currently encased in specially made heavy sandals. Her ankles rose high, meaning it looked like she had a backwards, sharply bent "knee" under her normal knee. Her legs overall were long and rather shapely, heavily muscled but very lean toned from all the running and swimming she did. Shapely thighs led to shapely hips and rump, currently encased in comfortable but form fitting jean shorts, the belt of which had a specially designed loop in the back, which held her rather long, very thickly furred, feline-like tail, that had a strange habit of flipping up at the end, fanning her fur out much like a husky tail flipped up.
Her stomach was toned and lithe, leading up to her chest, which at the moment was hidden under her leather jacket and t-shirt. Her shoulders where slender, arms toned, very athletic was her build. She was extremely flexible, her back seemed longer then normal, nearly capable of folding in half. Hands that currently gripped her car door where oddly shaped, half paw half hands, longer finger pads then a paw but shorter then fingers, still dexterous enough to act like hands, paw enough to have claws, also retractable like a felines, though her claws where very thick like a wolf's. Her head, especially her face was where her true 'hybrid' state showed itself, she had a face shaped mostly like a felines, except her muzzle was longer and narrower, more like a wolf's, and she definitely had a carnivore's strong heavy (and very sharp) teeth. Her ears where triangular, wolfish, and poked up from the midst of her currently pulled back hair. Cathrine had one other drawback of her appearance that constantly and immediately got attention. The entirety of her fur and hair were as pure white as new fallen snow, and nearly as bright. It never failed to catch attention, she'd even been pulled over once or twice because the cop couldn't believe what he was seeing.
She grunted again and reached up to adjust her heavy, waist length braid over her shoulder, pawing over her braid to make sure everything was in place and once more looked over towards the gas station, building up courage to go over there. She sighed and gripped her keys as she walked towards the door, more then ready to just turn around, get into her car and leave should this gas station attendant look at her the way the last one did, bracing as she pushed open the door into the rather quiet station with that telltale chime that seemed to be in all gas stations everywhere.
She froze a half second as the attendant appeared from behind the wall, then really froze at the sight that met her eyes, before she practically melted on the spot and grinned. The attendant was also blended, a tall, lanky Dalmatian male, who gave Cathrine a bright smile and a cheerful hello. Cathrine found herself relaxed to the spot briefly before she moved over to the racks, wrapping her tail around her waist and looping it to itself so she wouldn't accidentally knock anything over, giving herself the look of a much shorter tail. She picked out a light snack and some caffeine to keep herself focused for the rest of the trip, carrying her purchases over to the counter and dumping them with a sigh.
"Long day?" came the level headed, rather calming voice of the dalmatian behind the counter as he started to ring up her purchases. Cathrine chuckled weakly as she checked the payment options accepted here, and pulled out her wallet, tugging her card out before saying with a soft sigh, "More like a long week and longer trip."
The dalmatian cocked his head to the side and blinked before grinning, "Ah, another for Uni? we've seen a few come by this way, where ya from?" Cathrine chuckled softly nodding and leaning on the counter lightly, happy to be out of the car and talking to someone who didn't look at her like she was a demon of some kind. "Out in the middle of nowhere" she chuckled softly before continuing, "Midwest, been on the road since Thursday night... should have gotten there yesterday if not for my little uh, little problem yesterday morning"
The Dalmatian tilted his head and Cathrine vaguely said, "Flat tire" not really wanting to go into exactly what had happened. He made an 'ah' sound and handed over her bag, which Cathrine took with a smile and a simple thanks. She turned towards the door, catching a feeling as she walked, looking over her shoulder to make sure. Yup, the Dalmatian's gaze was glued to her ass as she walked. Cathrine couldn't help but to grin though her blush and flick her tail down, breaking his gaze. He looked up at her sheepishly, and she just winked to him, taking her sweet time opening the door, giving a bit of an extra roll to her hip and shoulder as she pushed to get back outside.
She returned to her car and unlocked it from a distance as she automatically walked the long way around, checking her tires and trunk. All four tires whole, trunk undisturbed. She sighed a relieved sigh and opened the door, slipping in and getting herself set up for the remainder of the trip, cracking open her bottle of sweet sweet caffeine, flipping the GPS manually back to directions to the university, examining them before cranking her tunes back up and hitting the road. This was going to be interesting.

Three hours later she rolled along University Crescent, and stopped in front of a place called Unity Hall. Rather interesting building at that, old Victorian style. Cathrine looked around, rather impressed at the number of blended folk already here, going about their day. She tucked her things away and locked her car, heading into the dorm and looking around. The entrance way led into a common room, set up with large TV in the corner which was currently blaring the news, something about an incident on a overseas flight. Cathrine was pulled from the news at the sound of her name being cautiously called, and she spun in that direction. The woman calling her name was a squirrel, large bushy tail bouncing around as she trotted over, asking again, "Cathrine?"
Cathrine nodded and smiled, offering a hand, "You must be Rebbecca, didn't expect you to meet me." The squirrel laughed softly and shrugged, "We only have a few students coming in today, all of them with some or other called in reason for being a day over check in time, but these things happen" Rebbecca looked out to the hybrid car on the drive and grinned, "Good to see you made it"
Cathrine gave a toothy grin and shrugged, "Was interesting getting my extra tire out from under my things, but least I had the sucker, would have been hiking the rest of the way without it"
"Nah. We'd have sent a rescue party. Common let's get you checked in and I can introduce you to your roommate, they put you with an older student, I hope that's not going to be an issue" Rebbecca replied, leading the way to the counter, which the squirrel jumped over instead of taking the conventional way around. Cathrine chuckled softly as she watched, and shrugged a bit, "I don't see a reason for there to be a problem, I assume that questionnaire is how we got put together?" Cathrine flushed a little remembering some of the point blank questions that had been asked on that form, but all of them had been rather logical for a dorm to ask.
Rebbecca nodded, "You'd be right, we pair people together based first on need, then on other things, there was an odd number of freshmen in your need level and thus you got put with a junior who is in the same need level." Cathrine blinked a bit, but just nodded and signed what she needed to sign, reading everything a few times to make sure she wasn't signing anything crazy or the like. About the time she got her room number and the code beamed to her cell, Rebbecca stood up and called out, catching the attention of another student.
Cathrine turned to see who she had flagged down, and her eyes went wide. The student was a female Grizzly bear, and to the lithe five and a half foot tall hybrid, this bear seemed like a giant, easily over six foot tall, she visibly had the look of a powerful woman, yet at the same time looked like she would give the best hugs ever. The ursine had thick brown fur all over her form, currently hidden under bluejeans and a t-shirt. She had large paw-hands, the kind that looked like they could rip open a watermelon without a knife, and when she smiled to Rebbecca, Cathrine could see her strong, almost vicious looking teeth, yet there was a rather gentle expression in her sky blue eyes. She was, simply put, beautiful, power and gentleness all rolled into one. Cathrine swallowed her blush down hard but stood up from how she'd been leaning on the counter, and was thus introduced to her roommate.
Rebbecca of course made the introductions, "Cathrine, this is your roommate Rachel, Rachel this is Cathrine, she got held up on the road trip here" Rebbecca turned back to the shorter female with a smirk, "Since Rachel is going to be your roommate, she's also volunteered to be your big sister. Since she was one last year, she knows what she's doing, so I'll leave you in her capable hands while I go wait for the rest of the stragglers."
Cathrine looked up at her new roommate, what seemed like forever up at that. The bear grinned a bit and clearly looked over the younger girl, eyes seemingly resting a bit on her leather jacket, then her shorts a moment, before Rachel's eyes dragged back up with a wide grin, breathing out, "Goddess below, you're sexy" Cathrine couldn't help but to blush profusely, which only managed another grin out of the ursine. Rachel chuckled softly and waved a large hand towards the stairs, "Come on, I'll show you the room, unless you'd prefer taking a load up on the first go, that your car?" Cathrine mutely nodded, still trying to get her cheeks to stop being red and jingled her keys a bit before shrugging lightly, giving an attempt at being casual. Rachel took charge and went out to the car for the first load, Cathrine following meekly behind.
One unloaded car later, which took a much shorter time loading considering the loads Rachel insisted on carrying, and Cathrine was leaning over her new computer desk setting up her tower and monitor, treating her computer with something akin to reverence. The sapphire blue tower matched her eyes perfectly, and every bit of it had been hand picked and assembled by her own hands. She connected her monitor up, flipped the on switch and finally plopped into her chair, making a face at how it lined up with the desk when she was sitting. Rachel came up from behind Cathrine, the ursine tilting her head at the look on the hybrid's face, piping up, "What's wrong cutie?"
Cathrine smirked to hide her slight blush, coughed and scooted up to the end of the chair she was sitting in before looking down below it with a sigh, "Gonna need a better chair or a pillow to sit on, this one's too short." Rachel grinned suddenly, almost impishly, "Or a booster seat." Cathrine only managed to turn redder, huffing and turning away in a mock pout, mainly to hide her red face with a mutter, "Get enough of that back home, I think I'll stick to the pillow." However the turn away also hid Rachel's wider grin and the gleam that had appeared in the bear's eyes, and by the time Cathrine turned back around, the gleam had faded into a serene smile. Things fell quiet after that, as Cathrine sent off a email to let everyone back home know she'd gotten in safely, then turned to the daunting task of unpacking everything.
Hours later, Cathrine flopped onto her new bed and glanced over to the time with a sigh, her stomach was rumbling loud enough to be heard. It was sadly well past the normal dinner hour, and she wasn't familiar with the area. She turned to her new roommate, who had taken up her own chair while she watched the hybrid unpack, though was discreetly pretending to browse the net on her own computer, stealing glances on the occasion. Cathrine cleared her throat softly and smiled shyly when Rachel looked over. "Wanna get something to eat? I don't know about you but I'm starving"
The bear grinned and nodded picking up a purse, standing and stretching gracefully, "I'll drive, rather don't think I'll fit into that little car of yours" Rachel smirked, "By the way, you can call me Ursa if you like, bit of a nickname." Cathrine grinned a bit, chuckling and bantering back, "Folks back home called me Cat, amusingly enough" and she turned, following the larger female out.
One quick trip in Rachel's van later found the pair in a quiet little restaurant, the mom and pop sort that offered just about anything whenever you wanted it, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Cathrine settled into the booth half of the table, Rachel having commandeered the chair as it offered her more freedom to shift around. They looked over the menus in silence before ordering, Cathrine getting french toast, Rachel ordering a BLT with fries, extra bacon. With that out of the way, Rachel propped her arms up on the table and smiled a dimpled smile to the younger female, "So Cat, since we will be spending the next year living together, tell me a bit about yourself"
Cathrine eyed the bear a while before chuckling softly, "Well I suppose I can go first..." She sighed and leaned back into the booth, toying with her glass a moment before starting to talk in a quiet, rather wistful voice, "I'm the youngest of three girls, but I'm the only blended, bit of a late child for my mom since she'd not intended to have anymore after the first two, so I was a bit of a double surprise." She chuckled softly before continuing, "Not just the only blended in my family, but the only blended in my home town, and for a while there I think I was the only one in the area, if not the state. Course, lots more nowadays. Bloody virus gets around like the common cold, but... back when I was younger it was different.. "
"I grew up out in the Midwest, Middle of nowhere, quite literally at that, but I was really lucky in that my home town is very open and understanding, and while some were wary of this halfling child in their midst, most got used to me rather quickly when they realized the way I looked was the only way I was different." She paused a moment looking up towards Rachel, who was looking interested and thoughtful while she listened.
Cathrine chuckled and nodded at Rachel's interested expresion before continuing, "During high school I was treated just like all the rest of the students, however it was also the first time I really came into contact with others who didn't know me, when the band or the choir went out for various competitions" Cathrine's face fell a bit, but attempted to stifle the memories, though she was sure Rachel saw it in her face when the bear's larger hand engulfed one of hers and the soft voice pipped up, "What happened?"
Cathrine paused a moment before coughing softly and sighing, "I had gotten too used to being where everyone knew me, and was too confident in myself. It was during a band trip out to the west of the state, and during the other band's performances I made the mistake of wandering by myself to the concession stand" Cathrine paused again, but once she was started the words flowed a bit easier, even to a stranger, "I found out later most of the locals had only heard of mosaics, most had never seen them, I had been the first they'd seen... they... didn't react well" she swallowed a bit, but danced her words around a bit, not really willing to go into full detail just yet, "they attacked and drug me off. I was lucky there had been a group of my band mates behind me, they followed and got me out while calling the cops... I spent that night in the hospital and as you can guess, the rest of the trip I spent being rather closely tailed by band members and the parent supervisors alike." She chuckled weakly and looked up as their food arrived, nodding to their server and asking for syrup before continuing, "That and every other band, choir or swim team trip until I graduated, I didn't want to learn the same lesson twice, luckily the swim only competed in our own little area though, everyone in those towns already knew of me since I've been swimming since I could walk, maybe even before"
Rachel eyed the younger female a moment, fully realizing the girl had skirted by something just then, but let it slide. They had just met after all, and she didn't want to push Cathrine too much, although she couldn't help being curious about what had happened. The bear feigned ignorance that something had been skipped though, and merely nodded calmly, "So, band, choir, swimming, what else did you do in high school?"
Cathrine nodded for confirmation before tilting her head, "Jazz band as well, played guitar and drums, occasionally whatever else our director needed, I was a quick learner, played just about everything." Cathrine grinned a bit and then chuckled again, "Not long after that, my mom was contacted by these GAIA folks, who had finally heard about this lone blended in the middle of nowhere thanks to the coverage of my attack, and were offering free medical care if they were allowed to keep records of me for their 'research' projects" she then grinned, unable to help it as her mother's reaction had come to mind, which of course caught Rachel's curiosity. Cathrine snickered softly, then grinned widely, "My Mom told them off, said her daughter wasn't a thing to be examined and if they contacted her again she'd be calling her lawyer." Rachel laughed at that and responded with a voice that told of suppressed giggles, "I like your mom already."
Cathrine smirked a bit, "Mom and I may have had our differences in the past, but she's always been rather protective of me, Especially since, well, yanno." Cathrine chuckled weakly and shrugged, "Otherwise I'm not very interesting I don't think" She fell quiet though as she applied herself more heavily to her french toast, only managing a murmur of, "Oh this is good stuff!"
They lost themselves into their meal, Rachel finishing before the younger girl, and so she began talking about herself to fill the quiet. She had grown up in the area, neighbor to two other blended, older then her who had taught her early how most would view her, luckily for her their neighborhood had been much like Cathrine's home town, with most the folk accepting of these strange children. Her area had also gotten many more mosaics much faster then Cathrine's area, so the blended population has been much more visible earlier on. She had also been in choir growing up, and had amusingly played the Beast in a Beauty and the Beast production just a few years ago, which made Cathrine giggle a bit. They both declined dessert, but both wanted hot cocoa, and continued talking for a good while, keeping the banter to more mundane things like favorite music and movies, before heading back to the dorm.
Once returned, Cathrine threw her cell, wallet and keys down on her desk before looking over her shoulder to Rachel with a flick of her tail as she shed her jacket, "Mind if I steal the shower? That hotel on the way wasn't exactly set up to handle blended folk and I didn't want to risk plugging their system" Rachel gave a nod, glancing out of the corner of her eye to watch the smaller female, trying to hide her grin. Cathrine turned away halfway and pulled off her shirt, unknowingly showing off her well muscled back and slender waist before she pulled her robe on, getting undressed the rest of the way under it, much to Rachel's dismay.
The ursine couldn't help but to call after the younger girl playfully, "If you need help washing your back just call!"
Cathrine blushed profusely at that and mumbled something or other as she slipped into the bathroom, embarrassingly tucking into the shower before she calmed down. She hit the controls for the shower and left her robe on the hook, quietly stepping into the hot water with a groan. She lost herself in her thoughts, deep enough in them that half way though when Rachel came in to use the bathroom, Cathrine didn't notice. The hybrid's daze lasted long enough that she didn't even notice if Rachel was awake or not as she made her way to her bed, closing the partition for privacy and flopping down onto the soft surface of her new bed without removing her robe, sighing softly and closing her eyes. Her last thought before unconsciousness was a simple thanks for not being one of the mosaics that required nighttime aids for weak bladders.
