Chapter 27

Bishop to King's Pawn

Shadewoods Manor

Medical Wing

6:00 PM

Calilus watched with Bishop as Pete started to stir back to life, his battered body connected to machine-controlled cellular regeneration feeds as well as life support. Once Pete was fully conscious, Cailus gave him a disapproving frown.

"So nice for you to join us again in the land of the living, Pete." Cailus's tone was like low-grit sandpaper. "I found out that someone freed all the Casanovas at a certain brothel I own... A brothel that you are supposed to manage."

Pete, though he was still weakened and frail, began to tremble. "C-Cailus... It wasn't my fault-"

"Then_whose_ fault was it?!" Cailus snarled. "Pete, I put a lot of money into your little venture when I assumed ownership of your brothel! Now, all the slaves that serve in that brothel are gone, and no one can seem to find them! Tell me... What good is a brothel with no prostitutes to rent out?"

"Cailus, p-please..." Pete begged. "I... I-It was that fox and fennec... They shot me and my men up... Before we could do anything... They... Got away with Tommy-"

Cailus felt his berserk button slam down after those last few words. "WHAT?!!?!" He hollered, his anger becoming explosive. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY 'GOT AWAY WITH TOMMY?!!' DAMMIT, PETE!!! YOU DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY SECURITY CAMERAS INSTALLED IN YOUR ESTABLISHMENT!!! NOW THIS IS GOING TO AMOUNT TO A NOTHING MORE THAN A LOST INVESTMENT, YOU USELESS FOOL!!!"

Cailus was interrupted by his smart phone ringing. He took it out and saw that it was one of the insurance companies that covered the brothel. He shot a glare at Pete.

"...You had better hope that the insurance will cover this loss. Bishop! Keep an eye on him!" Cailus barked. "I need to step out for a few moments to take this call."

Cailus then stepped out of the room, answering his phone as he slammed the door shut behind him.

Once Cailus was out of sight and earshot, Bishop looked at Pete with a burning stare that could melt metal, his eyes like honed swords.

"...Why are you looking at me like that, freak?" Pete managed to hiss out. "Just because you are Cailus's current favorite doesn't mean you can do as you-"

Bishop then suddenly cut Pete off as he grabbed him by the forehead, grasping Pete's skull with his massive hand like he was ready to crack it open like an egg!

"I don't know the full details of what happened, Pete..." Bishop said, his voice extremely quiet. Yet it also was filled with an antagonized blitz, clearing showing the dragon's rage. "But whoever this fox and fennec are... They now have my son in their custody, and if they intend to bring him harm... That is something I cannot allow..."

Bishop closed his eyes. Then Pete then felt his skull steadily start to buzz, the intensity quickly building up to painful levels! Not only that, but his head immediately start to throb like the worst migraine possible!

"B-Bishop... What are you doing...?!" Pete grimaced, feeling his body start to convulse! His heart rate skyrocketed! His breathing became rapid! Pete felt tears of fear start to run from his eyes as they rolled into the back of his head! Pete then began to make choking sounds, struggling to breathe! Whatever Bishop was doing, he knew his battered body could not handle it! He was laying in death's embrace, and knew no matter what happened at that point, that he was going to die, and that no cellular regeneration tech would be able to bring him back no matter how advanced!

Bishop, though he clearly felt Pete's fear, continued to break into Pete's mind using an ability he had been able to keep hidden from Cailus all these years: Physical psychic link connections. This was a common trait among all his people, though only a select chosen few of his species learned to harness and use this power during their manhood ceremonies at the age of 20, when they were no longer formally recognized as children. This power could allow the dragons of Sepharth to read into other individual's minds, and see all the contents within: Feelings, desires, secrets, and most importantly, memories. However, Bishop had taken this ability a step further in his servitude to Cailus, as he could use this ability to tap into the recipient's biological processes and pull some nasty strings.

Bishop focused in on Pete's memories of the day prior, his will steeled and ceaseless. He eventually found the memories revolving around this certain fox and fennec. It seemed, though they were wearing sunglasses that Pete had managed to catch a glimpse of their eye colors. The fox had baby blue eyes, while the fennec's were a two tone of blue and yellow. He also heard their names: Kyle Rhys and Sam hill, though Bishop had a gut feeling these names were fake.

Once Bishop had these specific parts of Pete's memories locked in, he then proceeded to send the Doberman into extreme and escalating cardiac shock. "...Apologies, Pete, but your usefulness is now ended." Bishop released his stranglehold on Pete's skull, stepped back, and leaned against the wall as the Doberman's heart raced uncontrollably, veins popping out on his forehead and face as his lungs seized up! About fifteen seconds later, Pete went into total cardiac arrest. He was dead in less than a minute, and Bishop knew that Pete would also have a lot of brain damage due to hemorrhages throughout his entire cerebral cortex from the extreme blood pressure. Even if Cailus managed to revive him, Pete would be nothing but a vegetable.

Once Pete was permanently dead, Bishop got up from the wall and glanced over the Doberman, shaking his head. "...Cailus, your lackeys break so easily. Regardless, they never cease to disgust me." He whispered as he walked up and placed his hands over Pete's chest.

A few minutes later, Cailus stepped into the room. Once he saw the sight, his eyes widened. "What happened?!" He barked.

"Pete's heart rate skyrocketed all of a sudden, then he just went into cardiac arrest." Bishop lied, raising his hands from Pete's chest. "I tried to revive him with CPR, but it proved to be ineffective. Apologies, Master. I know your phone call was important, and I did everything I could."

Cailus looked at Pete with disgust. Then he scoffed, throwing up one of his hands. "Bah! No matter... He was going to be fired, anyway. As for who took Tommy, I'm going to have to hire a private investigator to look into this matter..."

"With your permission, Master I would like to start my own investigation into this incident." Bishop requested. "Even though Tommy is my son, I assure you it won't be a conflict of interest. When I find out who did this, you have my assurance that I will make them suffer."

Cailus raised an eyebrow, then smiled. "Very well, Bishop. You may conduct your independent investigation... Though when you find out who did this, I want you to bring me their heads."

Cailus then walked out, going about the rest of his business.

Bishop then uttered a small prayer, not only for Pete to face the wrath of his faith's underworld, but for his gods to forgive him for his kill, and to guide Bishop back to his son.

Once his prayer was complete, he looked up at the ceiling for a moment. "Hold on, Tommy... I am coming for you."
