Taming the Wilds: Unfortunate News
#26 of Taming The Wilds
A sad farewell to the series and some quick plot thread snips.
I've had to make a very unpleasant decision regarding this story. There simply isn't enough engagement for the amount of time I spend on each chapter, and I can't justify spending hours writing it to the detriment of other stories.
However, don't worry. I hate when stories end abruptly as well, and I have no intention of leaving my readers with dangling plot threads. Apologies for any grammatical errors or strange sentence structure, this will be something closer to cliff notes than an actual story.
Plot Notes:
Regarding the Templar: A shady organization working from the shadows under a dark god. The assassin that crippled Buck belongs to their order. The labs within the unnamed cavern and the caves where the Niix were imprisoned were created by their hand. Their plans were to demonize monsters by creating feral hybrids and unleashing them on the continent, using the resulting chaos to bring the world to its knees. They were behind the attack on Lopestown, the destruction of the kitsune city, the original enslavement of monsters in Prilia, and the insanity of Prilia's king.
The Templars' ruler: The big bad of the story. A monstrous creature barely worthy of being called human. Twisted by dark magic and hatred. Was originally one of Hephaestus's treasured advisors, but grew greedy and succumbed to the dark god's influence.
Dione: The god(dess) of compassion and light. The guiding hand behind Russell's powers and the reason he was taken from his world. Alongside Atren, her brother, she was meant to keep balance across worlds, but her brother's greed and hatred for all things good forced her to attempt to destroy him in an endless cycle. Reborn through the creation of new worlds, she takes a more subtle approach than her power-hungry sibling and desperately wants to save those she considers worthy.
Atren: The dark god of hatred. The source of everything evil in the world and a raw force of destruction. Plants seeds of power and corruption among vulnerable souls and nurtures them in an attempt to sow chaos.
Character Plot and Endings:
Mimid: The king of Mimid's change of heart brought a new era of prosperity to his kingdom, and alongside his warrior queen and the monsters he used to look down on as nothing more than slaves, he took back his stolen lands from surrounding kingdoms. Arriving at the final battle in the nick of time, he decimated the Templar's forces with his army of orcs, monsters and humans, allowing Russell and the rest to make their way into the Templar stronghold.
Durz and Ruri: Facing off against Templar elites alongside his father, Durz bought enough time for his friends to continue into the castle. Exhausted by an endless sea of soldiers, he fought to the last, collapsing the tunnel and sharing one last kiss with Ruri before rubble buried them.
Lu Meng, Yah Shi and the rest of the Komainu: Threw themselves into battle, using their enhanced healing to become furry wrecking balls. Single-handedly decimated most of the Templar's human forces, but were cut off from the rest by magic. Still alive by battle's end, but quite tired.
Bo: Revealed himself to be as talented with poison as he was with medicine. Last seen making use of a blow gun and various powders to put the Templar stronghold into disarray and keep them from reinforcing their king, accompanied by Kin-Kin's slicing scythes.
Buck and Grom: Defended the combined forces of good from aerial attack with electricity and arrows. Last seen on a ridge, screaming a challenge to a winged tarrasque abomination.
Treant and Boulder: Drinking buddies and lovers, they created their own tavern within Ko's refuge. Promised their friends that, alongside Ollie and Ashix, they would grow Ko's refuge into a thriving city.
Trunk and Lucian: Grew closer with Lucian's Common lessons, becoming best friends and lovers as well as Russell's mates. Leading Prilia's forces, they were forced to stay behind while their love risked his life. Fought hard in his stead and provided a shining example to Lucian's people.
Luminos and Gregluin: Despite their attempts to give up Mimid's throne, they take over ruling Shoufeya after its government was toppled. Beloved by their people, they were a light in the darkness to guide Shoufeyans from centuries of hate and imperialism.
Hugh: Threw open the magically locked doors to the templar's throne room with all of his strength, then collapsed. Still alive, but exhausted, cared for by Thikkeh.
The Niix king and his brood: After reaching maturity, the Niix king bid farewell to his saviors and, alongside his newly hatched army, decided to spread the word of Ko's refuge across the land. Adventurers from other continents still show up in Ko's Refuge years later, reminiscing about the scent of honey and the affectionate embrace of striped muscle.
Ollie and Ashix: Providing rest, relaxation and a place to work on one's physique, they drew hundreds to Ko's Refuge, working alongside Treant and Boulder to create a home that their friends would be proud of.
Isamu and Brigirth: Madly in love and inseparable, they spent their days working in tandem to create better magical armor and weapons. Without the skillset for battle, they stayed behind when others marched. With the dragon's help, Isamu was able to sheath Ko's Refuge in a shimmering ward that protected against ill will and violence, expelling anyone that would cause its residents harm.
Peak and Nimei: Still inseparable and madly in love, they grew closer with time. Nimei, under Isamu's tutelage, became an even more talented fire mage. Taking on the templar's monstrous hydra, they combined their strengths to cut off and cauterize its heads, but ultimately both succumbed to its poisonous bite, breathing their last together on the ground.
Russell and Lope: Though he didn't want to fight, his hand was forced, and he tried his best to fight alongside his cherished friends. Unfortunately, he was useless in the final battle, forced to watch as Lope protected him, allowing himself to be cut and battered until Russell's healing couldn't keep up. Realizing he was ignored by the Templar's ruler, he threw himself onto the enemy's blade, distracting him long enough for Lope to rip the human's throat open with his teeth. Died cradled in Lope's arms, bathed in the werewolf's tears.
Epilogue:
Though many of their stories ended in tragedy, there's still a chance for a happy ending.
After Russell's death, Dione explains to his spirit that this wasn't his first foray into this world, or even close. Ninety-Nine times he ventured into their world, armed with different powers every time and connecting in different ways with its residents. A warrior, a diplomat, a healer, a courtesan, all manner of callings shaped his relationships. Without fail, it was his compassion that brought him to strike back at Atren's forces, consistently weakening him and allowing Dione to reset the world at the moment of Russell's death. The Templar's ruler was the dark god's last ditch effort to sow chaos in this world, and upon his failure, the dark god dissipated, awaiting his reincarnation in another world.
Dione restores Russell's memories of his past lives, thanking him for championing her cause, then rewinds time, using the last of her power to reward him. He awakens in that same forest, with the sound of Lope crashing toward him through the brush, but this time, he opens his arms, his face dripping with tears as he meets the bewildered werewolf in a tight hug.
Author's final words:
Thank you to anyone that read this story. It was the kick in the ass I needed to start writing seriously. I'm sorry that I can't continue this story, and I'm sure that the lack of engagement is due, in part, to my pacing, jumping points of view, and other faults. If you have any other questions about anything involving this world, feel free to comment here, and I will try my best to answer.
