Earth's new beginings
I awoke to a cold hand pressed against my face. My eyes flickered o...
I awoke to a cold hand pressed against my face. My eyes flickered open, allowing the dim light to filter in, my eyes slowly adjusting to the sparsely lit environment. I was laying on the ground, I tried to move but I was weak, starving, no energy to move more than a finger.
"What's going on?" I asked, barely strong enough to squeeze out those three simple words.
I heard a chuckle, most likely from whomever it was that had their hand on my face. Suddenly they spoke, their voice was neither male nor female, neither menacing nor soothing.
"Do not worry about the past" they replied "for you there is no past, only a brief future."
I was somewhat unnerved by this. "What do you mean?" I asked, slowly beginning to regain my strength. They chuckled again.
"Your past is no longer important, not even you can remember it, all that matters now is what is to come" I felt it's hand begin to withdraw from my face and suddenly my energy began to return. "Once my hand is removed from your face you shall find yourself able to move again. Do not try to run, for there is nowhere to run, it's just you and me here."
I placed my hands onto the cold floor which seemed to be covered in some sort of smoke. I pushed myself up onto my knees then stood up weakly, teetering a bit as I tried to maintain balance. I looked around to see who it was that had been talking to me. It was standing, or hovering, in the corner. It was something which I had never before seen, it was neither flesh nor fur, just a grim shadow, and though it wasn't quite human it had a definite humanoid shape.
"What are you?" I stammered, startled yet not quite afraid.
"I am neither man nor ghost, neither good nor evil: I am but an essence, the essence of earth. To put it simply, I am the soul of the earth, a mere personification of it, if you will."
I stared into it's dark, featureless face. "Then why do you want me? I may not remember much, but I doubt I was important."
"I did not choose you based on importance" it replied, an air of amusement in it's voice. "I chose you because you were innocent, open-minded: you hadn't been poisoned by the reckless, destructive society which you call humans. You have the innocence of a child, yet the understanding and responsibility of an adult."
I remained silent, working his words through my mind.
"If you're done asking questions for now I'd like to show you what you're here for, are you ready?" It reached out his thin shadowy hand, gesturing me to take ahold. I reached out and wrapped my hand tightly around it's cold hand, then shut my eyes as I felt a sudden heat and a strong wind rush over my face.
As the wind died down, I opened my eyes and looked around, I saw we ere no longer in that dark ominous room, but instead standing on a hill outside, a large power plant stood off in the distance, the dark smoke pouring from his towers taking up much of the horizon.
"Humans have worn out their welcome" my companion said, it's gaze fixed on the power plant, "they have become parasites; draining the land of its energy and resources, then strangling whatever remains. Humans were meant to care for the Earth, but they have done everything they can to murder it, along with the other beings that call it home"
"We can change" I said, beginning to realize what he was implying.
It simply sighed and placed a hand on my shoulder, "I wish I could believe that. There was once a time when that may have been possible, but it is far too late now, humans are now at the point where luxuries are mistaken for necessities, they will not give up their habits, nor their possessions"
I looked away, staring ff at the power plant, watching silently as smoke continued to pour from its tall grey towers, casting a dark, foreboding shadow over the once beautiful landscape. I knew my companion was right, of course, humans would never be able to give up their harmful lifestyle.
"What are you going to do?" I asked quietly, knowing the answer already.
Again it sighed, "The only way to kill a weed is to remove it by its roots. In other words, if we cannot get rid of the humans' habits, we must instead get rid f the humans."
"You're going to kill them" I said softly; not a question, it was a statement.
"It will be quick, they will feel no pain" it replied, still not looking at me, "All traces of their existence shall be erased, the Earth will return to the way it should be and all other animals will remain unharmed."
"What will happen to me?" I asked, curiously, "If I were to die as well, you wouldn't be telling me all this, you must have plans for me."
"Correct" it replied, finally looking down at me with its dark featureless face, "I have collected others like you as part of my plan, you and the others will be in charge of repopulating the earth, for it still needs protectors."
I gazed up at it curiously "but if you want to eliminate humans, why are you going to bring them back?"
"You will repopulate the Earth, but you will no longer be humans" it replied. With that it raised a dark hand and placed it against my forehead. I felt a sudden rush in my head and my eyes grew dim. I was faintly aware of a tingling sensation all over my body as I began to lose control; my mind separating from my body. Then, finally, the darkness took over.
When I awoke o realized I was still on the hill, and my companion was still standing over me. Disoriented, I placed a hand on the ground to steady myself. I looked down at the ground and saw an orange furred paw where my and should have been. I let out a shout and jumped to my feet, looking down at my body. I was covered in thick orange fur, with a patch of white on my chest and my foot paws, where my cock used to be there was a white furred sheath and behind me my white tipped tail hung. I reached up to my face and felt a muzzle where my nose should've been and two pointy ears on top of my head.
"W-what did you do to me?" I stammered, still trying to take it all in.
"I told you before, while you are tasked with repopulating the earth with a new race of protectors, you will not be repopulating it with humans. You are part human, part fox, so you will always be connected with the animals you are guarding." My guide replied, looking down on me with its eyeless face.
I looked up "are the others...?"
"yes the others are like this as well" It replied, then it reached out a hand "are you ready to meet them now?"
"yes" I replied, taking its hand. There was a flash of white light, and we were gone from the hill, soon the power plant would be gone from there as well, and soon I would begin my mission, my mission to build a better world...
