Breaking the Monotony Chapter 5                I awaken to a bright light piercing through my eyelids. The warm streams of sunlight heating my dormant blood as I begin to pull myself up on my bed. Yesterday was fun. Just James and I, hanging out together around the house. I forgot how much fun it is to play with your younger sibling. Especially when you both think somewhat the same way. It's more like having a best friend than it is a brother. Of course, I don't really know much about that, I've never really had a best friend that I would refer to as a best friend. I am so glad my brother and I get along, not to mention the fact that we are both gay, it would have sucked to have him be an ignorant jerk and not want to talk to me after walking in on Caine and me. It's good that we are bonding, isn't that what brothers are supposed to do anyways? I guess it just seems to me like we've sort of drifted apart since the accident last year. Me being the only one to be hospitalized, I don't think he liked having to deal with going everyday to check on me. Every time I woke up, he was there, alone. Poor kid must have hated me for having him sit there alone while my parents were of doing whatever they were doing. I look up at the sky to see a few clouds; nothing that would cause any worry as far as weather goes.                  "Big brother!" I hear the high-toned fox voice call from downstairs.                "Yes, James?" I ask rubbing the dreariness out of my eyes.                "You want some pancakes?" he says walking up the stairs,                "Pancakes?" I pull my out of bed, "didn't I tell you not to use the stove without supervision?"                "Sorry, big brother, I just wanted to surprise you with breakfast," he says from my doorway.                "It's fine, just not anymore, I don't want you getting burned or anything," I say walking towards him.                "Alrighty," he says perking up and racing down the stairs. I follow behind and I'm hit with the smell of burnt pancake. "It took me a couple tries before I was able to get it right."                "How long have you been up?" I ask as I get to the landing of the stairs.                "Um, I think it's been about half an hour," he says turning into the kitchen. I follow quickly behind him to see a stack of about five pancakes each on two plates. The pancakes were laden with syrup and looked downright delicious. I took a look into the trash can to see only three partially burnt pancakes.                  "You are quite the chef; maybe I should teach you how to cook sometime". He giggles a little at the statement as he sits down at one of the seats. I sit down at the seat next to him. Breakfasts passes by pretty quickly with minimal talking as we both devour the food in front of us.                "Thanks, bro," I say as I pick up my plate and put it in the sink, "Remind me to surprise you with breakfast sometime." His face contorts as he thinks through the statement. "Don't think too hard, you might hurt yourself," I say chuckling as I head back upstairs. As I enter my room I flop on my bed and stare at the ceiling. I do this a lot don't I? Just stare into utter nothingness as I think of what to do or think about. It's not a bad habit I suppose, but I have had a few people call me on it. Maybe I should try to refrain from this behavior. Although, this has given me some of my best thoughts. Maybe just control it? Oh, well. I should probably take a shower, shouldn't I? The last time I took a shower was on... Thursday. And it's already Sunday... It's Sunday! Which means I get to go to the pier with Caine and his family. At least the majority of the cum from our yiffing on Friday was on him and I only had to pick a little out of the fur on my stomach.  I sniff my armpits. I really do need a shower. I get up off my bed and pull a pair of boxers from my drawer. I walk into my bathroom to enjoy a nice relaxing warm shower. I wonder what my parents are doing right now. What if all this time they've been going on business trips they've really been going on vacation from some rich relative's inheritance. Although, I don't really know any of my relatives, I'm not even sure we have any. It has always just been James, Mom, Dad, and me well, me and James for the past year. It sucks that my parents had to start working so much after the accident that almost killed me. That has to have been the scariest moment of my life. I remember waking up and the doctor telling me that I was the only one to survive the car crash because I wasn't wearing a seat belt. Immediately after that I remember recalling that I did have my seat belt on. The next time I woke up, I saw my parents at my bedside. Interesting to think how such a dream could feel so real.                  "Big Brother! Hurry up, you've been there for almost an hour! I gotta pee!" He shouts knocking on the door.                "Alright, I'm coming out," I shout back as I turn off the water. I wrap my towel around my waist and grab my boxers. "It's all yours little bro," I say opening the door and exiting the now steamy bathroom. James enters behind me as I make my way towards my room. I look over at the guitar sitting in the corner of my room. I can't believe that my parents made me learn to play that thing, along with the piano, the flute, and the violin. I guess they thought I would be some sort of musical prodigy or something by how quickly I picked them up but that just hasn't happened so far. I could play them pretty well, but nothing to get excited over. The only thing that I'm mediocre in. Everything else I'm great at. Maybe I should pick it up again? Who knows, maybe with some work, i'll become a musician. Of course this is all just speculation. The odds of it happening are pretty low. Although, I thought he same thing about getting a boyfriend and here I am, getting ready for a date with him. How do I want to look for today? Should I stick with my carefree look? Or maybe something a little more thoughtful? Of course I probably don't have the clothes to do that. Maybe I should go look for an out fit. I turn around in search of a clock. It's only ten, I have about five hours before we leave, maybe I should go to the mall to find something. Sounds like a good idea.

"Hey James!" I shout hoping to penetrate the bathroom doors and beat the sound of water pouring down.

           "Yes, brother?" he shouts back.

"You want to go to the mall today, I'm hoping to pick up some new clothes."

"Sure, I was going to ask you the same thing."

"Alright well get out and get dressed and we'll leave."

           "Alrighty, Judey."

I quickly pull out the first pair of jeans I could grab along with a shirt with the same tactic. Good thing about my clothes is that everything matches, for the most part. Dull colors always match dull colors. Blacks, greys, and whites are my best friend. No worries about people questioning your outfit or your style if it's almost non-existent. I put the clothes on and look in my closet for shoes. Meh, I could go bare pawed for now I suppose. It's not like we get persecuted or discriminated against for not wearing shoes.

It must have sucked to be human, with their tender foot paws, I don't know how they survived as a race for as long as they did before dying off a few centuries ago. That's when we took over as the dominant species and began to domesticate, well most of us did. Those who refused to conform to society's means are now referred to as feral. A few are literate and could probably function in our society but being domestic for a feral is as bad as a fur being gay in our society. At least that's what the history books, biology books, and teachers say.

All except one teacher, my biology teacher for the majority of the year. "they're lying to you jude," he said, "ferality isnt just side evolution, that same ferality gene is present in all of us. It can be triggered at any moment. One second you could be wearing clothes and the next you would be ass naked running through the forest in search of a lesser rabbit, sometimes ferals even go for the full anthro rabbits, just depends on which is more easily accessible." he seemed a little off his rocker when this was happening, his eyes were darting back and forth, his speech was fast and low. "they're doing things, this company, Crisis Corp. they're trying to find a chemical trigger for this gene so they could give it to our soldiers when they go out to war. Of course they would try to lessen the gene's intensity but they won't be able to, not for the next twenty years at least. They are also working on genetic engineering, changing a fur's genes so they could build muscle faster, be smarter, and I've even heard that they are giving furs superpowers!" of course, I didn't hear from him, mr. Allen, after that, maybe they took him to a mental institution. I wouldn't be surprised, this guy was speaking nonsense. Feral genes, genetic engineering, that stuff only exists in sci-fi movies.

"Hey Jude, you ready to go?" James says from my door way already fully dressed. I find myself lying on my bed again.

"Yeah, let me just grab my wallet and let's get in the car," I say pulling myself up from my bed. I walk downstairs, graving the keys as I exit through the garage door. We both get in on opposite sides of the four door dark blue Honda Civic. I open the garage with the button attached to the sun visor after putting on my seatbelt. I Start the car and drive off through the cold autumn streets of redwood. Unfortunately the closest mall is twenty minutes away from our house, even more so if there is traffic. Thankfully it's early enough on a saturday that traffic isn't much of a problem. I don't think it will be the same on the way back. As the trip progresses I notice James begin to fall asleep in the passenger seat. I miss seeing him so peaceful. He doesn't seem like he's been like this for so long. Poor kid must have had quite the number of troubling thoughts for this past year. It's not like I haven't, but he seems to have just faded away up to recently.              The rest of the ride is in silence. As I pull into the large ring of parking spots surrounding the mall I nudge James awake.

"We're here sleepy head," I say softly to the smaller groggy fox in the passenger seat.

"I fell asleep?" he asks, a tinge of confusion in his voice.

"No, you just woke up from being awake," I jest as I pull the car into an open parking spot. We both remove our seat belts and exit the car. I squint my eyes to protect them from the harsh rays radiating from the sun.

We make our way to the entrance of a department store connected to the mall. The day is bright and sunny, somewhat warmer than the previous days have been but still cold due to the time of year. I don't like winter. Who likes to be cold and either be stuck inside or pretty much forced to wear layer upon layer of clothing. Winter sucks.

Once we get Ono the store, we head towards the boys section to try to find something for James. We spend about ten minutes in this department before he realizes that this store doesn't really have anything he want to wear. A ten year old with a style, doesn't really seem normal, most kids his age would just wear whatever is in their closets. I guess it is a good thing that he is already building an identity, not many kids could say that. I could sort of identify with him, I don't like that department store much myself.

We exit the store and see the rest of the mall in front of us. We walk through, looking around for a store that might hold something of interest. I see James take a quick glance behind him, not seconds later he takes another glance.

"See something you like?" I ask him turning to see.

"It came out recently!" he says with a giggle of excitement in his voice. I try to see what he's looking at when I notice a video game store in view. In the window was an advertisement for the new furry kombat game. "can we get it big brother? Please please please!" he begs, tugging at my shirt sleeve. He looks at me with wide puppy eyes, his lip quivering slightly to add to the effect. Of course, I rather want it too.

"Alright, come on, let's go get it."

We got into the line that went out of the door and around the corner. And so we waited in probably one of the longest lines of my life. I watched as we took a step every few minutes, making little progress.

As we arrived at the counter, I checked my watch to realize that we only had a half and hour before Caine and his family are heading going to be at the pier.

"Sorry sir, but we only have the special collector's edition of the game," the late twenty-year-old porcupine behind the counter says after I request the game.

           "What's the difference?"

"It's twice the price but it comes with a human version of every character, an artwork book, and a zero-wolf figurine," the porcupine explains looking around the store at the sudden absence of furs after he made the statement of the lack of regular versions of the game.

"Alright, we'll get it," I say passing the porcupine my credit card.

"Sorry everyone we are now completely out of the Furry Kombat game." a loud moan pf disappointment radiates throughout the store as the porcupine announces the bad news. Instantaneously the population of the store plummets as disappointed furs drudge out of the store. "lucky you, eh?"

"Huh?" I reply reverting my attention towards him.

"Last copy of the day, luck must be on your side," the slightly overweight fur says. I wouldn't exactly call it luck. I knew we were going to get a copy from the beginning; if one just pays attention long enough, they could turn so many variables into constants.

"Yeah, I guess you're right," I say back to him, playing along. Nobody really understands my logic, I try to explain it but nobody gets it. Therefore, I just play along with "luck". He passes me a bag containing the box of the collector's edition of the game.

"Thank you," I tell the cashier before leaving.

"Thank you, big brother. I love you so much! Thanks for using your superpower to find out if we would get the game!" James shouts out in glee from besides me.

"I told you, it's not a superpower, I just have a good head on my shoulders and I've learned how to use it. You could be just as smart if you'd apply yourself instead of leaving school early all the time complaining of a stomach ache," I call him out on something I only recently discovered thanks to the fact that he's been coming home earlier and that his school called.

"Um... It's just that school is so boring, everything there is so stupid. We go over the same thing about ten times just because some of the kids don't get it. If only there were a smarter class than the gifted cluster class," he argues.

"You're learning what eighth graders are learning, what else could you want, high school?"

"Is it really possible for me to go to high school, then I could hang out with you all day."

"As tantalizing as that sounds, you should stay in elementary so you could be with kids your own age," I check my clock to look at the time, we need to head home. I change our course so that we are headed to the store we originated in.

"But kids my age are so stupid, with the exception of Able of course, but the remainder is completely useless at this age. I'd rather make high school friends than make elementary friends."

"Alright, we'll discuss this more later, right now we have to hurry because we only have an hour to get home and get ready, traffic is probably going to be horrible." Our pace suddenly quickens, as our speed becomes a little less than a run as we rush to get to the car and hurry home.

As I pull out of the parking lot, I see James pull out the box from the bag and pulls it apart. He takes out the instruction manual and digs his nose in it. When we play it for the first time he'll probably beat me the first few times but once I grab hold of his play style in that game, he won't win of his own accord. I feel his tail swaying erratically as he anticipates playing it. I remember when I used to be that giddy about playing a new game. Over the last year, my interest on video games has plummeted, I still enjoy it, but I just don't have the drive to play it.

The drive is as I expected, boring and traffic ridden. No real conversation with James due to his fascination in the game. Fortunately, the traffic isn't prolonged so once we broke free of the one mile radius of traffic to the mall, the flow went well, and our speed increased. By the time we pull into our driveway, forty-five minutes passed by.

"Come on James, we have to hurry up and get ready, we only have fifteen minutes."

"I'm ready," he says with a slight giggle, "thanks for the game again." he runs in through the now open garage with the game store bag in his paws. That sneaky little kit. Funny how I could go to the mall in search of clothes, spend almost a hundred dollars and not have a scrap of cloth to show for it.

I park the car and enter the house myself and rush upstairs to put some shoes on, I don't mind about my clothing so much anymore, I just don't want to be bare pawed. As soon as I wrestle my shoes on and my laces together I begin walking out the house, calling to James on the way out. I walk to Caine's house and knock on the door as James quickly catches up to me.

"Hello boys," his mom says with a wide smile on her muzzle.

           "Good afternoon, Janice"

           "Hi."

"Come on in, we're about to leave in a minute, we're just waiting on Caine and Able." she puts emphasis on their names.

"We're almost ready, just a second," Caine yells from upstairs.

"Aren't women supposed to be the ones who take a long time to get ready?"

"Able and I were hanging out and we lost track of time, alright," Caine says, defending himself as he makes his way down the stairs.

"Alright, everybody is here? Let's get in the van, then," his dad says entering the room. We all exit the house through garage door and file into the 2009 silver Toyota sienna.

"I missed you," Caine says grabbing hold of my paw and moving closer.

"I missed you, too," I reply.

"So how was your day so far?"

"Pretty good, we got the new Furry Kombat game that came out today," I say nuzzling against him.

"You got that game!? I've wanted to play it since they announced it! We should play it tonight!" he says like a puppy with a new toy.

"Sounds good, James his nose buried in the instructions manual the whole way home from the mall. We're still sleeping over, right?"

"Yup! Tonight is going to be awesome."

I nuzzle against him again and whisper, "It sure is."

He wraps his paw around my shoulder and holds me in his embrace. I'm glad his parents support our relationship. I wish I could figure out if my parents could feel the same way. Unfortunately I never get to talk to them both, and i think it would be wierd to tell one before the other. Maybe I'll do that the next time I get even a second. That is, of course, saying that I do get a chance. Their work schedule has become erratic and their business trips have become more frequent.

Why does it feel so good to cuddle up against the one you love? Well I know the scientific reason is because the action releases dopamine into your brain making you feel good, but why does this action release dopamine? Alright that one is obvious too; our bodies crave interaction, so once we receive it our bodies release the dopamine.

Yes, I am one of those furs who believes everything can be explained. And that's because it's true. Things don't happen "just because". There's always a cause, explanation, or reason something happens. People have taken all kinds of logic against my conviction, so far, none have succeeded in swaying my thoughts.

"We're here!" his dad announces as he pulls into a parking lot. I look outside the window to the view of the pier which is more like a slightly smaller amusement park. It's sad that I've never been here even though I've lived in Redwood my whole life.

"what do you want to go on first?" Caine asks as he takes off his seatbelt.

"Um, I don't know, I don't really care. Any ride is fine by me," I say, blatantly showing my apathy towards the subject. Truth be told, I've always been freaked out by rides. I know that there is almost no real danger in it because of the amazing engineering put to make it possible. My problem, however, is my lack of control. The fact that, if something did go wrong, I wouldn't be able to do a thing. That scares me the most.

"Here's your ticket," Caine says with an arm extended towards me with a small piece of paper in his paw. I feel a stabbing pain at the back of my head for a brief second before if fades away.  "We're going to go off on our own. Is that alright?" he asks his parents.

"Sure, you have your cell phone on you right?" his dad replies.

           "Yep"

"Alright, James and Able are going to stay with us."

"Come on! Let's go," Caine says in a bark of excitement as he grabs hold of my paw and drags me off into the depths of the amusement park. "how about this one?" he points to a ride constructed from a few carts and arms spinning them around.

"Alright, sounds good," I lie to him. Not even this, which most people would consider "tame" still, has many variables, and I wouldn't be able to do anything in the case of an emergency. We hurry and get in line. The line is short, mainly because the park is mostly empty. The only other furs in the line are two foxes and a wolf. The three look very happy. The fox immediately in front of me and the wolf are mainly focused on each other. The fox in front looks somewhat dazed. As though he isn't even here. I bet he's high. Probably on marijuana due to his positive disposition. That, or he's just so faded he has no idea where he really is.

It's a Wonderful World

The four foxes were having a blast with their loved ones, each oblivious to the others. They all looked up into the sky at the same time to see a shooting star graze across the sky. "I wish that we will be together for the rest of our lives," each wished upon the star. The star flew out of view and they continued on their day.

"How about we go on the Ferris wheel right now? We only have about ten minutes left," Caine suggests. I hide that same stabbing pain at the back of my head again.

"Sounds good, let's go!" I start making a mad dash towards the recently less intimidating ride. The line is pretty much non-existent save the fox and wolf from earlier. Soon after they are placed in their own seat and lifted up about five feet above the ground as the next cart is brought to the platform. We load up in it and are started in a rotation.

"I'm sorry for what I said yesterday, I didn't know," he says turning to look at me.

           "What do you mean?"

"I didn't know about your parents. My mom told me when I got home what James had told her," he continues.

           "What about my parents?"

"That they died that year in that car crash."

"They didn't die, they were hardly affected; I almost died because I wasn't buckled."

"You didn't die because your seatbelt was broken, your parents are dead, Jude." they cannot be dead; I saw them three days ago. That sudden pain returns to the back of my head and starts to feel warm.

"Th-they didn't die. No. Ouch, my head is fucking killing me! They didn't die... They. Fuck! They were... Killed." suddenly the last year flashes through my mind. With no relatives James and I have been forced to live on our own. Fortunately, my parents life insurance policy has been good enough for the year and doesn't seem to have any problems. James has been increasingly angry at me over the fact that I haven't seemed to feel anything. I pull paw up to my nose. I look at it to see my pad covered in red. Darkness starts to crowd my vision as the back of my head starts to feel as though it's on fire.              "Jude... Jude... Jude, are you okay?" the sweet serenade of a voice enters through my ears. I slowly begin to open my eyes to reveal the beautiful white furred wolf before me.

           "Dandy," I reply quietly.

"You don't seem it, you passed out on the Ferris wheel after you bled about a liter of blood from your nose. I started freaking out; they stopped the ride so we could get you off. We took you home and I've been here since."

"Thanks, sorry about that, it felt like my mind was rewiring itself. It also felt as though something in the back of my head caught fire. It was horrible. At least now, I realize that my parents are dead. I've known it too. I've taken care of James and myself. I don't know what was wrong with my head that made me think they were still alive. A trauma induced hallucination perhaps?"

"You said they were killed, what did you mean?"

"I don't know, it was all a blur, but I do remember a gunshot and my seatbelt flying off. There was somebody else trying to keep me alive, but they didn't save my parents, so they must have wanted them dead."

"You don't need to worry about that. All you have to do is rest, you've had a long day."

           "Alright."

           "Good night."

           "Good night."
