Shades of Silver Part I: Shadows

Chapter I: Away From Light Straight to the Dark

Jaci waked through the alleyway as quietly as she could, which was

very quiet considering her herritage. Jaci was a neko. She tightened

her cloak around her, keeping her ears flat so they didnt reveal her

neko lineage.

There was a loud crack and she dove between a couple of old brick

buildings. It started to rain. "Its just thunder...." She thought,

trying to calm herself down. She stepped out from her hiding spot

and started back down the alley.

She had only taken two steps when she was grabbed by her shoulder

and pulle back. She fell into a puddle and her hood came off,

revealing her grey-blue hair and her catlike ears. She looked up at

who had grabbed her. There were three men, all much bigger than her,

standing over her.

"And what do we have here?" One of them said, grinning.

"A neko? What else is new?" Another muttered as the third one leaned over her

and looked her in the eyes.

"Blue hair and red eyes? Whats with that?" He asked. Jaci didnt answer. "Oh well.... You, my dear," He put his hand under her chin. "Will fetch quite the pretty penny on

the marketplace." He smiled wickedly. He pulled out a collar and

proceeded to strap it to her, much too tight. She pulled at it a few

times.

"Let me go...." She pleaded, her voice full of fear.

"Not a chance," The one holding her answered. She started to cry. "God you make a lot of noise! Shut up bitch!" He smacked her hard across the face. She stared at him in disbelief, her cheek turning red. "Get used to it. Now that you are coming with

us you wont have much of a choice." He grinned. She closed her eyes, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Look at me!" He yelled, smacking her again. She whimpered. There was the sound of a

footstep and a cold voice.

"Dont touch her again,"

"And who the fuck do you think you are?" The one holding her down asked after letting her go and turning around.

"Just dont touch her again." Jaci could tell the voice was male from its harsh tone.

"Oh.... Like this?" The man kicked her and she whimpered, holding her side in pain. There was the sound of a blade being drawn.

"Yeah.... Like that!" Jaci crawled away, listening to the sounds of steel

clashing together. There were a few fleshy sounds and then....

Silence.

She turned to see the three men lying on the ground, dead or dying.

She realized that she had also been teathered to a pole the whole

time without realizing it. She crawled as far as her leash would

allow.

"Are you alright?" She jumped at the sound of the voice.

Looking around, she found a pair of legs and followed them up,

noticing a silvery-grey tail. "A.... Neko?" She thought. "My name is

Kael." He knelt down face to face with her. His silvery hair was

matted to his head by the rain and his ears were perked up,

listening for anyone else who might come. "Whats yours?" He tilted

his head, the water rushing off his face and hair at new angles.

"uhmmm...." She looked away. He smiled and laughed softly.

"Its alright. I'm not going to hurt you." He tried comforting her.

Jaci pulled on the rope a little. "Here, let me get it." He reached

down to his right leg and pulled a knife out of its sheath. Jaci

flinched and tried to move back a little. Kael smiled and shook his

head. "I'm not going to hurt you." He reassured her. She watched him

cut the rope and put the knife away. "His eyes.... They are....

Captivating...." She thought.

Kael saw her staring at him. "The colors?" He tilted his head again.

"N-no...." She answered.

"Its fine. The eyes and hair normally throw people off at first but they get used to it." He smiled. The two locked eyes for a moment. Jaci smiled and her eyes slowly faded to a

greyish color. "Woah!" Kael jumped back a little.

"What?" She tilted her head.

"How did you do that?" He regained his nerve.

"I.... Dont know.... My eyes just do that." She looked away, her eyes a slight

purple hue. Kael stood up and held a hand out to her.

"Come with me. Its not safe here at night." He offered. She took his hand and he helped her

up. "I dont think you told me your name, did you?" kael asked. Jaci

shook her head.

"No. I didnt." She grinned, her eyes glimmering a little.

"I get the feeling that she knows something that I dont," Kael

thought. He watched her as they walked. She was looking up at the

sky, the moon shining brilliantly and sparkling in her eyes. The

storm had cleared, leaving the stars to shine again. Kael looked over as if to say something.

"Jaci," She didnt let him speak.

"What?" Kael tilted his head and gave her an odd look.

"My name. You wanted to know," She said.

"Yeah," He mumbled. It didnt take him long to realize that he was staring at her eyes. "They're

silver, like mine. How can be? First red, next grey, then purple....

Now silver," He thought. Jaci, who had been staring at the moon, took note of him staring at her.

"Oh yeah.... My eyes," She sighed. "They change with how I'm

feeling," She looked away, wanting him to stop staring.

"Hey," Kael knew he had done something wrong. "I'm sorry. I didnt know it would

bother you that much," He brushed her arm with his tail. "I kinda

like it," He looked down, a little sad that he had hurt her. The two walked in silence for a while. "Jaci," Kael broke the silence.

"Its ok. I'm sorry. I thought you didnt like me because of

it," Jaci quietly answered.

"Why? Look at me. It doesnt get much weirder than me," He laughed. Jaci smiled and her eyes turned

yellow.

It grew dark on the twisted castle. Its master sat on his throne

with a clear ball in his hand. In it was an image of Kael walking

with Jaci. "Damn him! Damn that cat!" The shadow screamed. "How did

he get to her before I did?" He cursed.

"Thariel! Come hither!" He called. A man, dressed in black armor and

a cape, strode in.

"Yes my lord?" He knelt in front of the throne.

"I need you to get something for me," The shadow's voice strummed on

the only string of fear Thariel had left in him.

"Y-yes?" The shadow held out his hand. The ball had Jaci's face in it.

"Her. Bring her to me, alive," The shadow laughed as Thariel walked away.

Reia had been searching the city all morning. "Damn it! Where are

you?" She whispered. She ran a hand through her red hair, stopping

at her catlike ear. "You said you'd meet me in the town square at

dawn. So where are you?" She thought.

There was a sound, as that of a footstep behind her. Her ears

twitched. She reached down to pull out her daggers. "Whos following

me?" She asked in an irritated voice. Ther was a hiss, like a blade

being drawn. Reia smiled. "I'm gonna enjoy this," She thought.

She heard her follower jump, presumable preparing to slash down on

her. Spinning around, she brought her daggers up and blocked the

attack. "Silver?" She thought. Her attacker pulled out of the lock

and swung his blade at her side. She parried with her left dagger.

His features were hidden under the black cloak he wore. "Come on.

Show me something," She thought. She worked her way around him so he

was facing the sun. There was a small flash of silver under his

hood. She grinned. "It is you," She thought.

She put away the dagger in her left hand. Her attacker swung in on

her left side, noticing the opening. "Nice try," She smirked. Reia

jumped up and landed on the flat of his blade. "Silver?" She asked,

raising and eyebrow. Kael laughed and pulled back the hood on his

cloak. "It is you!" She walked up the length of his blade. "Dont do

that again!" She punched him in the stomach. Kael winced and his blade turned over, causing her to fall.

"What was that for?" She glared at him.

"You're the one who punched me. Technically its your fault," Kael grinned. The two started laughing. Kael was the first to stop. He sheathed his sword. "Red, I have

something, more like someone, to show you," He started off towards

his home. Reia tilted her head and quickly followed him.

____

Jaci woke up to find herself curled up under a window. She streched

out and smiles. "The sun feels good today," She thought. She had just started to fall back asleep when she heard a door open. She closed her eyes and pretended to sleep.

"Yeah. So anyway, I found those three guys who were probably going to rape her and sell

her on the slave market. They were pushovers. Then I offered to

bring her here. Shes very quiet most of the time. Oh, and Red," Kael

gave Reia a quick glare. "Try not to scare her," Reia rolled her

eyes.

"I think someone is in love," She teased. Kael blushed and

looked away.

"Am not," He argued. Reia grinned and shrugged her

shoulders.

"Jaci, wake up," kael shook her. Jaci opened her eyes and looked

around. "Jaci this is Reia. Reia, Jaci," Kael introdused them. Jaci

stood up, streched, straitened her shirt, ran a hand through her

hair and then shook Reia's hand.

"Quite the multitasker arent we?" Reia mused. Jaci smiled and excused herself.

"I need a shower. I'll be right back," She grabbed a cloth bag from under her traveling cloak and

walked out of the room.

"Three.... Two.... One...." Reia counted down. Jaci poked her head in the door.

"Uhmmm.... Where is the bathroom anyway?" She asked. Reia grinned and winked at Kael.

"Second door in the hall to your left," Kael directed. Jaci nodded and walked away. Reia waited untill she heard the water running.

"Whats with her eyes? They were purple when she woke up but

then they turned grey when we started talking," Reia asked.

"They change with her emotions," Kael laughed quietly.

Reia raised an eyebrow.

"I hate it when you do that," Kael muttered.

____

Thariel arrived in the city at night. He moved as silently as a

shadow. His lond blade hung at his side. He smiled evilly as he

remembered his master's last words.

"What of Silver?"

"Kill him,"

"With pleasure,"

He stopped at a door, listening. He could hear Kael's voice. He

unclipped his blade and examined it. "So long and thin, yet so

powerful," He thought.

"I'll give them a little suprise," He whispered. Thariel kicked the door in, sending it flying through the entrance hall, shattering when it hit the wall.

"What the hell?" Thariel didnt recognize the voice. A neko with red eyes and hair appeared from an entryway, daggers drawn.

"Silver! Get her out of here! We've got company!" She shouted.

"My master did not tell me about you. Is it possible that he did not

see you?" Thariel mused. Reia tilted her head. "No matter. You will

die like all the others," He raised his blade, tearing through the

wall and ceiling effortlessly.

Reia dashed at him. "Like hell I will!" She yelled. Thariel smiled.

"This one has spunk," He brought his blade down on her. She blocked

the blow with her daggers. He pushed her back, throwing her into the

wall. Reia hit the wall with a yelp. She stared at him for a moment

before falling to the floor, unconsious.

"Pathetic," Thariel stepped over her limp body. He peered into the

main room. "Empty," He sighed. "Why did he have to make this hard?"
