Prologue
Riley walked slowly, his paws in his jacket pockets as his headphones blared 'Kids' by MGMT. The otter walked briskly, the cold, misty air stinging his eyes as he moved. He looked behind him, gulping when he realized he was still being followed. He broke out into a run now, heading towards him friend's apartment as fast as he could. The large Kodiak bear was still right on his tail...literally. "Get back here, Riley!" he growled in a voice that made Riley's fur stand up in terror. Riley got behind the apartment's complex door, slamming it quickly and running upstairs. "Ikato! IKATOOOO!" Riley hollered, pounding the door.
Ikato, Riley's vulpine friend, opened the door and ushered his otter friend in quickly. "Who followed you this time?" Ikato sighed. "Dave." Riley said, panting loudly and flopping on the couch. "He says I owe him for running away..." Ikato sighed and patted the otter's head. "Shh. You're safe. Just ignore him. You were smart to get the hell out of there when you still could." Dave had let Riley live with him while he was going to med school, but he quickly began drinking excessively and became abusive towards Riley. So he had left without saying anything a few months ago, and the bear was still trying to get him to move back. "Thanks for the help.." Riley smiled wide and hugged the fox. "You realize if you were slightly less adorable you'd get stalked less often, correct?" Ikato smirked, kissing the otter's forehead.
Riley swished his thick tail back and forth. "So, how was work?" Riley asked Ikato as they moved to the couch. "It was...work." "You've heard about the murders, right?" Riley asked the fox. "The serial killer who's been leaving random phrases in different languages at the crime scenes?" Riley nodded. "I'm scared...the guy still hasn't been caught."
"Yeah. I don't think I know anyone who hasn't." Ikato said, silver eyes shifting their gaze from the figure in front of them to the television screen. Though most of the images on screen were censored they still had their desired effect on the fox. He found himself holding onto Riley a little tighter, as if by that small action he could protect his friend from the dangers of the world. The murders had been going on for months now and the authorities were no closer to finding out who was responsible, leaving reports with all the ammo they needed to get the public stirred up. It was only natural for answers to be demanded, even when none could be given.
Riley purred softly and nuzzled the larger male, shivering slightly as the news report flashed across the screen. His sensitive ears picked up every terrified scream on the footage of the third corpse being strung between two flagpoles. Riley shuddered at the horrible image and shut off the TV, burying his face in Ikato's chest. The fox rubbed his back softly, grinning wide. "It's okay Riles...I've got ya." Ikato smiled wide and kissed the otter deeply, lifting him up. "What would I do without you?" he purred happily. Riley shrugged and poked the fox's belly. "So, where are we having dinner tonight? You're gonna want your energy..." Riley winked and flicked his tail suggestively. Ikato blushed and thought for a minute. "That seafood place...Leo's. Let's try there, I've heard it's good." He managed to say before cuddling the otter fiercely.

With a sigh, Ikato jumped off the couch and grabbed his car keys from off the kitchen counter. "Well then I suppose we should be going then. Food awaits us!" In only a few swift movements he had managed to grab Riley's paw and more or less drag him from off of the carpet and out the door, closing it behind him just as the two of them passed through.

The black and white fox skipped over to the driver side, giving his ride a good look over before getting inside. He grinned with pride as the engine roared to life with the turn of his key. The previous owner of the car had simply decided that it would end up costing less money to buy a new car than to get it fixed. However his father had the recourses to repair it. Riley rolled his eyes. "You and your car..." he muttered, buckling up and nestling into the seat. They took to the road and drove peacefully through the misty night, the car's lights blazing.
