Chronicles: Vex, Part 0: Prologue
#1 of Chronicles
It's been a while but I think that you guys deserve a bit of a teaser for the series I'm writing so I decided that I should release the prologue and see what the response was. Please take the time to read, rate, review and feedback your thoughts to me. I want to see what you think. I'm flagging the entire series as Adult because, even if it contains no yiff of the sort, the language is quite bad and it makes extremely obvious references and talks about sexual acts. This is pretty much just to cover my hide. Also, titles of the chapters are a reference to something. Try and find it!
Prologue: The Sufferer
_'Some people say that you should live for your country, _
Others say that you should live for your peers and elders,
I disagree with them. I think that people should live for only three things.
Live for your lover, Live for your family, and most of all, Live for yourself.'
'How to Live your Life by Jacob Narith, Famous author.'
Sometimes Ty felt like he had leapt into a situation without fully realising the consequences of his actions. This was one of those times. Night had fallen on Daelara, the self-titled 'Jewel of Fade'. The sight of the kaleidoscope of colours in the sky was almost too beautiful to comprehend. Unfortunately at this time, Ty Lalot was face to face with three bulked up thugs in the ruins of an abandoned warehouse. This wasn't particularly how he had wanted to end his night, but he had received a tip-off from an anonymous caller saying that the infamous gang, 'The Black Widows', was receiving a shipment of contraband this very night. It had been a trap, the thugs had been waiting for him there and he had run into a more open area, not wanting to be caught in the constricting corridors of the building. Now, he was in the yard outside, engaged in a stare-out with three criminals.
The tallest one stepped forward, revealing his facial features to be that of a bear, a cross between a smirk and anger on his face. Ty groaned to himself, the last he needed was a fist fight with a bear, this was not on his list of 'Most favourable ways to die'. The bear pulled out an extremely large flail and started swinging it around with finesse, obviously being versed in the ways of using the weapon. His comrades, a timber wolf and a bulldog, stepped forward and also revealed their weapons, both wielding a thin dagger and a katana, seeming less confident with their weapons than the bear, Ty kept note of that and started to analyse the bear but was interrupted by the bear sniggering at him.
'Shouldn't you be home with your parents, pup?' Ty was used to insults about how young he looked. He was in actuality in his late 30s, but had the face of a teenager. He'd heard many taunts about his looks throughout his career but had turned a blind eye to them. 'Don't you know that 3 is more than 1?' The bear seemed to enjoy taunting him, seeming overconfident, but Ty realised he was trying to goad him into attempting to exploit a weakness that didn't exist, hoping he'd fall for it and be an easy kill. Ty decided to stand his ground and wait for the bear to make the first move, allowing him to analyse the fighting style and come up with a counter.
They stayed like that for a while, eyeing up the opposition, until the bulldog became impatient and started to charge at Ty. His training kicking in, he braced himself and then, just as the canine was about to connect, he rolled out-of-the-way and stuck his leg out, tripping him up as he went by. He heard the satisfying of the dog connecting with the ground and looked round for a moment and, seeing that the canine was unconscious, started to take the initiative. He reached around his back and felt the comfortable grip of the hilt of his blade and unsheathed it in but a moment, the blade almost jumping from it's sheathe to his hand, and brought the blade to rest on his left shoulder, the weight almost non-existent to Ty. The other wolf started to look like he had his doubts about messing with him until the bear glared at him and barked a command at him, the wolf reluctantly running at him, shame running down his face. Ty ran up to meet him in the middle of the battlefield and initiated combat with the lupine.
As their blades met, Ty could see the fear in his adversary's eyes and was about to quickly knock his opponent out when he heard noises coming from behind him. He rolled to the left, just in time to avoid the bulldog who had recently regained consciousness and wanted to barrel into him, and let him knock into the wolf, leaving them both crumpled on the ground. Without hesitation, Ty shot towards the bear, wanting to take advantage of the more even terms they were now on, and swung for his legs, hoping to catch him off guard. No such luck however, as the bear had already leapt to avoid it and started spinning his flail around, wanting to land it on the agile wolf's back. Ty saw it coming, and sliced at the chain with his blade, slicing it in two and allowing the spiked end to fly off to the side.
The bear just grunted and threw the now useless weapon away, preferring to use his hands to tear apart the insolent wolf. He took a fighting stance, his centre of gravity shifting, allowing him to react faster, and he struck, his fist catching Ty by the hip. He held back a howl, the blow hurting a lot, even if it did glance, and just let himself get in a more suitable position to fight the trained bear. He leapt at the bear, his sword being guided both his hands and gravity and as he was above the bear, it swung down and....
....bit into the dry dust at his feet.
Ty had left himself open and the bear, who had moved extremely quickly out-of-the-way of the incoming blade, took the opportunity and sunk his fist into the wolf's side, instantly making the lupine collapse. Ty groaned in pain as the bear loomed over him and the others walked over, two of them laughing. The wolf just looked at the floored wolf, ashamed of himself and beginning to regret getting into it.
'Now this, wolfie, is why you don't mess with guys like us. Now, for not taking the hint and fucking off, you're in for a world of pain. This'll be a warning for no-one to try catch us. When we're done, they won't have enough left to identify.'
The bear planted his foot on the prone wolf's back and pushed him down hard. The others went over to various parts of the yard and picked up objects with which they could cause pain with, the wolf being glared at by the bear to do it or end up like the wolf below him. Ty was desperately trying to hold back any yelps of pain, not wanting to give them satisfaction. Tears started to run down his face as he realised he would never see his family again. He heard the others coming back and started to steel his resolve for the eventual assault that was going to occur.
All of a sudden, he heard a sound, one of metal entering flesh, and the dog in front of him fell, dead, blood seeping out of the thin hole that was in his chest. He heard a thwack as the wolf was knocked out, and he felt the bear release his grip on him and roaring, obviously wanting to fight. It lasted not even a second, the bear very quickly falling to the sword and Ty waited, desperately wanting to know what the other's intentions were while feeling his broken ribs piercing his flesh, causing him to howl in pain. He felt his saviour touch him, and, with a cry of shock, felt his wounds repairing themselves, bones snapping back in place and flesh knitting back together. He felt strength returning to his limbs and, with this flowing power, slowly lifted himself off the ground and turned to the figure.
The figure was a wolf like him, white fur showing through the openings in the black jacket that covered his upper half. A sword was in his hand, rested on his right shoulder, made of a metal that seemed to capture the light itself.
Ty was in complete shock in looking at the figure, familiarity in his eyes. 'B-B-But, w-w-what? He could only stutter, his eyes wide with deep surprise and recognition. The figure simply walked up to Ty and, without warning, touched him on the head with two of his fingers. Ty felt information rush through his head like a surge of water, flooding his mind with events that both shocked him, and stunned him. Also a sudden realisation of who they were, and that he had to keep quiet about the incident came about, the other wolf taking care of it.
He looked at the figures around him, eyes resting in particular on the wolf. He felt a twinge of sympathy for him, understanding what had happened, him obviously being forced to carry out the bear's order or have him or his family injured in retribution. 'What are you going to do with him?' He asked, not wanting him to be killed for reluctantly following orders.
'At the moment, he does not belong. In the future however, his story and this one will intertwine and he will become a major factor in the outcome in this. Remember, this requires all to do their part. I shall fake his death so that the other members of this gang don't come after him and I will take him to Eidra and make sure that he doesn't come to harm until the time is right. Now go. Return to your family. Live for them. Live for yourself.'
Ty quickly nodded in understanding, and he started running, hoping to be away from the place as quickly as possible to avoid suspicion, deep in thought the entire way back about the events that had transpired.
The other wolf stayed behind, sighing as he brought out a small book that he kept and turned to the page he was looking for, reading the handful of words that were on the page, and then returned to where he came from, another task done and more still to be done. The page he was reading slipped out and laid ont he ground for a few moments before dissolving into the air. These were the words upon it.
'The cartridge shall be chambered when he loses and he falls, but he shall rise again, higher than ever before, to survive, to complete the cycle of existence that keeps the balance of our very realities.'
