Omega Wolf's Lives, 01 - The Wolf and the Woman
Character and story property of Omega Wolf J
After 18 years, countless times of playing in various pencil and paper RPGs, many short stories, and a very large number of chat role-play sessions, I finally have put together chapter one of the very long life of my main and only fursona, Omega Wolf.
Hopefully my ability to write actual stories has not gone completely to hell in the years I have been doing nothing but RPG campaigns.
Please be gentle with thrown fruit and vegetables?
I plan to do more of these as I go through all my notes and clean them up some. Each chapter will cover one of her more interesting lives. She has had quite a few boring ones, so we will skip those, so do not worry if the next one is not #02, you did not miss any.
Chapter 01 - The Wolf and the Woman Character and story property of Omega Wolf J
The summer of 2,476 B.C.E. was a rather warm one in the mountains over what would one day become the town of Achnasheen, in northern Scotland, there in the forests a small but healthy Pack of Canis lupus lupus, European wolves, lived out their lives. As the Sun broke over the hill to the East of their den the sounds of the Beta female's birthing were clear and the rest of the Pack stayed near to watch over her. Time passed slowly, punctuated by new whines as the puppies were born, seven in total by late morning. The Pack was happy, new life, new strength for the group. During the day they moved inside one or two at a time to see the puppies, and greet them, nuzzling at the Beta female as they left. All the puppies were of a fairly normal brownish color, all but one, her fur was a dark grey, not unheard of, just odd. Time moved forward, days passed into weeks, and then into months, soon the puppies were five months old. The dark grey puppy as usual sat and watched her litter-mates play in the snow, not really joining the rough housing, she loved to play but like on many other occasions she was just to tired. Just the night before the Alpha female had taken them up to the ridge for the first time in weeks, and as usual the not very quick puppy had struggled through the wet, white, mess the whole trip, trying to keep up, but she would never miss a chance to sing at the lovely silver moon. She did not know why it always seemed so hard for her to keep up with the others, her mind would not have understood the problems in her body, she just knew they could and she could not. Due to this she was firmly in the Omega position in the Pack, unless she grew stronger her family may one day chase her away, a Pack could not afford a member so weak.
That night Omega simply could not stay in one spot, most of the adults were off hunting, she was there with her two older and four younger litter-mates. Her restlessness was irritating the Delta male who was watching them and when he finally growled unpleasantly at her she moved away to the edge of the den area, as far from him as she was supposed to go. He turned away, ignoring her, as was not to uncommon, she knew he did not like her much. As she sat staring out into the trees she thought she heard something beautiful, her ears perked forward as she tried to hear it again, she looked back at the others, but none of them were even looking her way. A few moments later she heard it again, so lovely a sound, and more than a bit louder, she turned to look at her litter-mates again, but they still did not seem to hear it. How could they not, it was quite audible now and SO wonderful, like softly howling song of true beauty, it seemed to call to her. After only a few more moments she began to move towards the sound, uncaring of her Pack, or of what it may be, only that she had to find what was making the wonderful song. Her paws carried through the snow in moments to a clearing she knew to be a good hour lope from her den, but she did not really care, for in the middle of the clearing was the most awesome thing she had ever seen. It looked like one of the upright, furless animals she had seen once in late fall, but she did not care about her Mother's warnings at the time, she moved unhesitant towards the figure. The, literally, radiant woman in the middle of the clearing stood there with a warm smile for the little wolf, her voice raised in a song of pure life and wonder. Her singing ended as she knelt down to the puppy, her eyes a beautiful ice blue lined with dark color, her lips red as blood, her skin olive and flawless. She had some odd thing the color of the snow draped around her lower body and up her back, her limbs, neck, and head were adorned with a multitude of strange shiny objects. But as truly strange as the woman was to the puppy, she felt no fear, only a warm, loving feeling filled her at the sight of this creature, and so she walked up to her as she would to her own Alpha female, low and whimpering softly. The woman opened her mouth, but this time it was no howling song, Omega did not know what speech sounded like, but it was very pleasant to her ears and she just knew what the woman's meaning was, the words working into her mind, changing the way her mind worked, making her able to understand the woman. Then the woman began to speak again, this time in a normal human tongue, explaining her need and her gifts. "Little One, I need you to hold and hide something for me. In return it will make you strong like your litter-mates and even stronger over time. But there is a price, as time goes by you will change, become something different, it will take much time, but it will come, and there will be creatures that seek to harm you if they discover our secret." She stroked the puppy's ears softly "Do you accept my offer and gift, with its drawbacks?" The puppy's mind swirled, she had been made far smarter then any wolf before her and it let her understand what all the woman was saying, but the only thing she really cared about at that moment was the offer to take her weakness away. For that she was willing to pay any price, her Pack would not send her away due to her weakness! She looked up at the glowing figure and with out thinking about it, she spoke. "Yes, I do, anything to stay with my Pack." She had some concept of the future the woman warned of with her new intellect, but truly all that mattered was her future with her family. The woman spoke, her voice filled with raw power. "Very well, know you will live till we break our bond, no matter how long that may be. Know also that if you ever wish to find me, come to Egypt where my power is strongest." She stood tall over the puppy, her right hand to her chest, then it entered her chest, a second later it pulled back out. In her grip was a brightly glowing ice-blue gem, she knelt down and placed it on the wolf's chest and then into it. Omega felt her heart race wildly as the gem was placed on it, then the woman's hand was out of her and her body felt as if it was burning, tearing apart. The pain was too much for the puppy, she passed out with a painful cry. Omega woke to see the woman holding her in her lap, smiling down at the puppy. "There you are, all better now. I am sorry the change was so painful, I did not know it would be, I have never done this particular magic before." She smiled again and rubbed the puppy's head softly. Omega took a deep breath and tried to stand. Her legs worked far better then they ever had, she nearly leaped as she put forth the effort it normally took to stand. "I, I am so strong!" The woman smiled gently at her. "No dear girl, you are only as strong as your litter-mates now, though that may change in time." The puppy nodded happily. "Now I can keep up, and learn to hunt! Thank you Alpha!" The woman chuckled softly at the term of rank. "That is a nice title, thank you, but my name is my title, I am Isis." The puppy nodded. "Thank you Isis." Isis set the puppy down and stood up, her dress still perfectly white. "I must go now Little One, I can only hide myself from all for so long. You must keep this night secret, there are beings out there that would harm you to hurt me. But know that I am always watching." With a gentle smile the glowing woman just ceased to be, disappearing totally. Walking slowly from the clearing, headed back to the den, the puppy tried to understand all that had just happened. It was more then even her new mind could fully handle, so she just decided to stop trying for tonight. She took the chance to run full out for the first time, she LOVED it, she felt so fast, like a bird, she had never thought she would be able to run like the others! With her new health she made it back in only half an hour, the walk would have taken the old her well over an hour. When she arrived two of her siblings ran to her whining, the others were looking at the Delta male, and she understood easily, her mind so much brighter now, her siblings had noticed her missing but the Delta had not let them look for her. Oh, she did not like him! But he was Delta and she was Omega, she whined and laid down, he turned quickly and ignored her. She gladly spent the rest of the night cuddled with her siblings. The next day when they woke she moved outside and joined in the other puppy's play happily, they were happy to have her, she did not join them much. When it came time to go out with their mother, the Beta female, to learn more of tracking the prey animals of the forest, Omega was finally able to keep up, she was so happy, and her mother seemed joy filled at her daughter's new health. As they moved trough the trees the puppies played and frolicked, Omega was only too happy to join in. By the time they had returned home to the den even her mother was tired from all the day's activity, but Omega was still fine. She had more stamina then her mother? She was amazed but very happy to be so healthy.
Over the next few months Omega thought she would finally be allowed to move out of the Omega position, but then that all changed. Wolves do not have a high opinion of other wolves that are strangely colored, such as white or black wolves among more normal grey and brown wolves. Omega's dark grey did not help among the brown Pack, but when her first gift finally showed it made it all that much worse. One moonless rainy night, as the Pack tried to hunt in the valley to the North-East, they were having very little luck, their noses just did not do much good in all this rain, but they had had no luck the last nigh either, they needed something to eat soon. Omega kept scouting out far from the Pack as she was oft to do, her unnatural stamina allowed her to keep moving most of her waking hours with little fatigue. She used this to her advantage, desperately trying to make herself as useful to her loved ones as she could. She was desperately trying to see something, anything, in all the murk, when suddenly the world turned bright, like the sun had risen. She could see everything well, like midday, and before she could puzzle at this strangeness to much her eyes caught a deer off in the trees. She woofed her find and sprinted off, they followed, her wandering had gotten them lucky before. They wondered though because they could nether smell nor see what she was after. The deer was caught quite unaware of their attack and went down fast. When it was all done they turn to look at Omega and made startled sounds. Her eyes glowed from within not much brighter then a dim watch light, but they were emitting light. The color blind wolves could not tell it was ice-blue like the gem on her heart. It took her a few moments to understand what was wrong, but when she did it was all she could do to keep from howling in anguish. She would never be ranked higher then Omega, they would never truly be comfortable with her. Hanging her head she started the walk back to the den, she was not hungry anymore.
Over the years Omega noticed two things. One was that her speed was slowly growing, by the time she was six she was faster then any of her Pack-Mates by a goodly amount, and two was that all the injuries she got seemed to be gone in hours instead of days. Last year her torn up flank, thanks to an irritated boar, the wound seeped a darkish fluid, blue though she could not tell, and had healed fully in a day and a half. But when her oldest sibling had his right hind leg injured badly by a falling dead tree, when the two of them were out hunting small prey, she did what any wolf would, she licked his wound, her eyes began to glow brighter, till they were noticeable in the evening sunlight, and her saliva became darker, her colorless vision did not let her see that it was a bluish in color, just that it was darker. Her sibling's wound clotted almost a second later and as she licked it healed, what would have taken hours, was healed in minutes. With only six minutes of licking the wound looked two days old and he could walk slowly. He was happy with this, but much of that was due to his normal canine intellect. Omega realized this was a new gift and vowed to use it to help all of those she could. She was happy that this gift would not be very noticeable to her Pack, they would not really understand what she was doing, it would not make her weirder then her eyes already did. Oh how she hated her eyes! The ability to see even in total darkness was not enough to make up for the social stigma and head throbbing sensitivity to bright daylight. As the two of them headed back to the den she thanked Isis that her new gift was innocuous, and much to her shock she felt a calming warmth in her breast. It seemed she really was watching over the wolf.
By the spring of her twelfth year she was the only living member of her original Pack, the rest had been slowly dying for years now, her last sibling had died seven months ago. But she was still Omega, still the last, she had long since grown to no longer dread this, for it gave her great freedom. No responsibilities to the care of the Pack beyond the hunt and the watching of the young, which was her duty more often then not. That was fine, over the years she had continued to grow faster, and her mind was on par with most humans now. She could cover ground so fast that deer had no hope of running from her, but she only did this in private, the other wolves were always scared if she did it in front of them. So she would hunt and then call them in to eat. The Pack had not been hungry once in years. She also used this speed to indulge in her wanderings, with a smarter mind came greater curiosity, and her curiosity was great indeed. She ran over the hills like the wind, her legs churning her ever onward, today she had decided to go south. The plains there had always interested her, but she had been taught to stay away from them, well she was the oldest now, no one to get upset with her anymore. She ran for hours, covering the ground at nearly fifty miles an hour now, this soon brought her near one of the villages of the humans. She had only ever dealt with one human, Isis, and she was wonderful, so when she saw a human she moved forward to greet him. But he saw her and made a horrible sound and ran off to the village . . . odd, he must have been surprised. She followed after him with a happy step, only to be suddenly in pain, her hip hurt a lot, when she looked back there was a stick jammed in her, with feathers on it? She was puzzled for a moment, then she was hit three more times quickly, OUCH! She turned to look around, upset and confused, what was happening? They were throwing sharp sticks at her, why?? Three more pierced in to her and she fell over, watching her blood run freely. She was going to die, but why, she had not done anything to them! Her mind was full of pain and questions, and then nothing. She woke in darkness, some sort of den, but no tunnel out. She was confused, why was she not dead? Her blood had been everywhere, when that had happened to the old Gamma male when he was hit by a bear he had died. She looked over herself, there were no marks anywhere! Her healing had brought her back from death? She shook her head, time enough to puzzle such things out later, she needed to get out and away from here. She nosed around and found that the oddly smooth, treelike, top of the dirt den moved when she pushed a bit, so she thrust harder, using the top of her head and pushing up with her very powerful legs she lifted it off and wriggled out. She was behind one of the human dens and it was an hour or so past moon rise. She turned and ran full out over the plains, away from the humans, back to her forest, back to her Pack.
She never went that close to humans openly again in the last four years of her life. She went down there many times to watch and listen to them, moving quietly to their windows and listening, learning, but she never let them see her again. She learned much in her last years, their language, culture, crafts, the way they saw the world, and their wonderful music. She was entranced by music, it was wonderful, so complex, and so beautiful. The other wolves thought her howls odd as she mimicked the songs she heard, teaching herself to sing on the hill she had always gone to, to howl at the moon. Always spending most of the night up there with the puppies for that year. At the very respectable age of sixteen, after a life devoted to doing all she could to love and care for her Pack, Omega laid down one morning as the sun rose and went to sleep, shortly after her breathing stopped and she passed. That night her Pack all went up to her beloved hill top to howl their loss at the new moon, they stayed up there for some time, she had been there all of their lives. No living Pack-mate had not been raised by her, and they would miss her.
