The Corner Store, Chapter Two: Awkward Moments
The wolf nervously rubbed his paws together as he saw his ex-mate come out of the washroom, looking flustered.
"Hey, Marcus, I was hoping I'd see you here...there's something I wanted to talk to you about..."
"Um, Ty, can it wait?" the fox glanced back towards the washroom, "I'm, uh, kinda busy with something..."
Tyler gulped, and glanced around the room. "Well, after we broke up, you said we were still friends...right? Well, I kinda have a favour to ask..."
The fox sighed, starting to look a bit agitated. "No, Tyler, I don't want to be friends-with-benefits, I thought you understood that last time you asked me."
"No, that's not what I--"
Marc growled. "So what, when you swing by my place a week after we break up and ask me to suck you off, that's not asking me to have a casual fuckbuddy relationship with you?" He shook his head, "why don't you just go..."
"Marcus, I...I..." the wolf just sighed and hung his head, whining under his breath, "I was gonna ask if you wanted to meet my new mate, but never mind..." he turned away and stormed out, tears in his eyes.
He heard the fox call his name as he left, but ignored him, heading out the door, before sitting on the bench outside the store, his fists tightly clenched.
Can't head back home like this, he thought to himself, reaching into his jacket pocket, can't let Jeff see me like this...
He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, slipped one between his lips, and then pulled out a lighter, setting the rolled-up paper and tobacco on fire.
He inhaled deeply, the red tip of the cigarette shining brightly in the night, and held his breath for a second before breathing out a cloud of grey smoke.
"I didn't know you smoked."
Tyler flinched, dropping his lighter, and glanced up to see Marcus standing there.
"I didn't," he replied, "I started after you dumped me."
The fox bent down and picked up the lighter, holding it to the wolf, "Ty, we both know that the relationship just wasn't working...we didn't get along..."
"Well, I was willing to change!" Tyler snapped, snatching the lighter from the fox, "how many times did I tell you, I would do my best to change for you?"
"And how many times did you actually try to change?" the fox demanded, "and how many times were you able to change?"
The wolf snarled. "What about you? Did you try to change, at all?" he took another drag on his cigarette, "did you ever even try not to glance at every single guy you saw with that...that fucking look in your eyes?"
Marcus couldn't hold back--he started yelling. "That excuses you? Me looking gives you permission to fuck my best friend, in my bed?"
Tyler jumped to his feet and grabbed the fox by his shirt, shaking him violently. "Maybe it does! Maybe I wanted you to know how it felt!"
Tyler froze. His cigarette fell from his lips, bouncing on the concrete and throwing a few sparks around, as his paws loosened on his ex's shirt, and his eyes opened wide, before closing. "I guess you're right..."
The wolf pulled out a fresh cigarette and lit it, while the fox sat next to him, and squeezed his shoulder affectionately.
The two sat there for a few minutes, the wolf smoking, the fox leaning away and twisting his nose away from the fumes. Then, Marcus stood up again.
"I'd better get back to work..."
"Wait," Tyler said. "You...you remember Jeff?"
"Yeah,"
"Well, a couple weeks ago, he and I, um...we started going out...I came here to see if you wanted to head out with us on Friday."
"Sure...I guess."
"Bring someone along...if you have someone, I mean..."
The fox nodded. "I might, we'll see," he chuckled.
"Might?" the wolf raised an eyebrow.
The fox shrugged. "We'll have to wait and see if it was a one-time thing or not."
The wolf chuckled a bit, and headed back to his car.
Whoever his new boy is...I hope Marcus treats him better...
