In this chapter, Morrison still won't let the pack rest and is bringing them along with him and David in a ride-along in his SUV

Lucas sat in the back of the squad car with Kaiden. He was annoyed that Morrison forced him to use his PTO to go on a ride along with him and David. Kaiden didn’t mind being made to tag along as he didn’t have a job he needed to go to, and his university work could be worked on whenever. He just needed a connection to the internet.

David sat in the front passenger seat in front of Lucas, softly snoring. He fell asleep almost immediately after he and Morrison clocked in. He’d been sleeping ever since.

The faint snoring ground on Lucas’ nerves. It was just loud enough that it kept him from falling asleep himself. He grew more and more irritated as the ride went on from being denied sleep after spending the entire night awake like all the others did, tracking down a spirit to become their pack totem.

It reached the point where Lucas lashed out and kicked the back of David’s seat.

David woke with a snort. He started growling when he realised how he was woken up and who did it.

“Don’t. Fucking. Start.” warned Morrison as he drove the group to their destination.

“Why does he even have to be here?” snapped David.

“Cause he’s an Ithaeur and we need to stop by Alamo to get more fetishes from Dane to deal with the Pure,” growled Morrison, annoyed that he had to explain himself to the younger werewolf. “Spirit binding is your auspice’s forte.”

“Not that I’m complaining,” said Kaiden. “But why do I have to tag along?”

“You’re the newest member of their pack. You haven’t dealt with fetishes yet,” said Morrison. “None of you are fetish crafters. So bartering with other packs is the only way you’re gonna get your claws on any.”

“Why couldn’t Jesse and Tsu’mara come?” asked Kaiden.

“Cause driving straight through Caliente to Alamo, will set off the Pure’s alarms telling them that the entire pack left Pioche,” growled Morrison.

“I already texted Dane to meet us at the diner next to the Sinclair gas station,” Morrison told the others.

Matt Dane was already waiting for them outside the diner. He didn’t lead them in but took them to the side of the diner to where his pick up truck was parked. The same teenage girl with mismatching coloured eyes that the pack saw when they first met Matt was sitting in the passenger seat.

“Sorry about her,” said Matt. “She’s in a bit of trouble right now.”

He asked Morrison, “So you need some talens, Howlmore?”

Morrison nodded, “Yeah, that stunning talen you gave me last time worked wonders.”

Matt grimaced, “That talen’s pretty difficult to make. The ingredients are hard to get my claws on. I don’t know if I can make one any time soon. A single basic talen I can do. Two or three I can get in a few days.”

He then offered, “Or I can also do a proper fetish for you. That I can get you in a couple days. Has to be a basic one, no fancy klaives or anything.”

Lucas spoke up, “A proper fetish would be nice. The talen was great but was only a one and done. We need more reliable magic since there’s so many Pure.”

Kaiden nodded in agreement. David did as well, hoping that a proper fetish would be better looking than the talen was. Which just looked like a regular stone.

“Okay, can you whip us up a fetish” asked Morrison. “Standard payment?”

Matt nodded, “A favor for a favor.”

“I could use the favor being done today,” said Matt. He pointed over his shoulder to the teenager sitting in the truck, “My daughter Jessica here has been ditching classes all week and stole a dirtbike from a classmate’s house. I’d tell her to take it back and apologize and it would be fine. No harm no foul. But she stole it from Rowley’s kid.”

“Ah, fuck,” said Morrison.

“Rowley?” asked Lucas. “As in Robert Rowley?”

Matt nodded and David said, “Ah, fuck.”

Robert Rowley was the owner and editor of the Lincoln County Record. The county’s local newspaper.

“The dirtbike belongs to his son, Mark,” said Matt.

Jessica yelled out from the truck, “Mark’s an asshole!”

“She did it to spite him,” said Matt. “Normally I would’ve smoothed it over with simple talk. But Bob won’t accept a regular apology and will plaster it all over the paper. He’ll make my daughter out to be a dirty thief for years if it’s not managed with care.”

“Mark’s still in school,” said Matt before turning to yell at his daughter, “Which YOU should be!”

He turned back to the others, “So it’s likely that they don’t know the bike’s missing yet.”

He took the pack to the back of his trunk that had a tarp covering a bike shaped lump. “If you can manage to get it back in the garage without them knowing it was missing in the first place, I’ll get the fetish done for you in record time.”

Morrison drove the SUV to the back of the diner so that the stolen dirt bike could be discreetly stored in the back of it. He then drove off with the others in tow to Robert Rowley’s house.

They got to the house no problem. Morrison had Lucas, David and Kaiden get the bike out of the SUV before driving off further down the street. Lucas hid himself and the bike in a bush in the front yard to keep watch while David and Kaiden looked for a way into the house.

“How should we do this?” asked Kaiden, “I can’t go snooping around a house without arousing suspicion. No one here knows me.”

David nodded and said, “Not to mention an unknown black man snooping around a house that isn’t his would get their attention.”

Kaiden looked at David, insulted, “Really?”

“What?” David asked, confused as to why Kaiden was insulted. “You know how people in these small towns are.”

“We’ll discuss the blatant racial profiling another time,” Kaiden said before leaving for the bush Lucas was hiding in..

“It’s not my fault that these people think that way,” David said to Kaiden as he left

David went to the side of the house, searching around for how Jessica broke into the house. The garage door was closed, and was an electric one. So no lock to pick. She would’ve opened it from the inside and closed it behind her after she stole the dirt bike. He checked the windows for any that had been broken. None of them were broken.

He was checking the windows more closely when he stumbled as his ears started painfully ringing. He clutched his head in pain where he’d accidentally shot himself. He groaned and leaned against the wall as he waited for the ringing to pass. When it did, he noticed the window closest to him, one that led straight into the garage, had scratches on the windowsill. As if something thin like a screwdriver pried underneath it to jimmy it open.

“Kaiden,” David whispered with a hiss. “Found it.”

Kaiden came quickly jogging to the side of the house where David was.

“Any idea how to break in without getting attention?” asked David.

“You’re a deputy,” pointed out Kaiden. “Can’t you just go in?”

“I don’t have probable cause,” said David.

“I could pretend to be a coyote,” offered Kaiden. “You could say you were just following me in.”

“I’m a deputy, not Animal Control,” countered David. “And I’d still need Rowley’s permission to enter the premises without a warrant.”

“Then shift to Urhan too,” said Kaiden. “Pretend you’re a feral dog chasing me out of your territory.”

David went to counter but paused as he thought for a moment before saying, “That’s actually a good idea.”

Both were in agreement. David opened the window for Kaiden who changed to his golden jackal Urhan form and jumped up and scrambled through the window. David changed into his black wolf Urhan form. He then made a show of going back out front of the house and sniffing around before finding a scent and following it to the back to the side of the garage. He jumped through the window to join Kaiden inside.

The interior of the garage was a mess. Full of machinery and automotive tools lying everywhere, oil stains on the concrete, and a wooden bench with a half disassembled engine. The only spot that wasn’t taken up was a bare spot on a wall where the dirt bike must have belonged. As there were two others in the same spot.

David shifted back to Hishu and said, “This place is a fucking mess. How the hell are we supposed to find the door’s switch?”

The garage door started rumbling as it opened. He turned to see Kaiden, in Hishu, standing by a switch near the garage door. Once the door was less than halfway open, he hit the switch again and stopped the door.

He gestured to the gap under the door and told David, “Get the bike. You can just quickly hide the bike again and pretend you’re on patrol. They’ll just think you’re that weird new deputy.”

David grumbled to himself and started crawling out under the garage door. On the way out he said, “Shift back to Urhan. Just in case something happens.”

He retrieved the bike from the bush Lucas was keeping watch in and wheeled back to the garage. He took care not to get it scratched up as he slid in through the gap under the door.

“Well that was easy,” said David as he returned the bike to its spot on the wall.

Don’t-” Kaiden started to say in the First Tongue as he heard what David was saying. But the Cahalith was too late when a voice called out from outside.

“Mark? Is that you?”

Both David and Kaiden froze. David quickly turned to the jackal and hissed, “Quick! Coyote!”

Kaiden then started loudly yelping, and started running around the garage. Stuff was knocked over as the jackal deliberately ran into them, with one crash sounding particularly expensive.

David quickly shifted to Urhan just in time for a balding man to look under the garage door.

Kaiden took that as a signal to bolt out of the garage with David in close pursuit, snarling and snapping at the jackal’s heels.

The man was bowled over by the two disguised werewolves and shouted in shock before yelling, “Stupid ‘yotes. Get! Get!”

Lucas bolted out of the bush in Urhan form and joined David in chasing Kaiden. The two chased the ‘coyote’ around the front yard before leading the chase down the road towards Morrison’s SUV.

Once out of sight, and it was safe to shift back to Hishu without being seen, the trio piled into the SUV.

“Some fucking lookout you were!” David snapped at Lucas as he buckled his seatbelt.

“I couldn’t see him from where I was!” argued Lucas.

“You could’ve heard him! Or smelled him!” snapped David. “Used any of your supernaturally enhanced senses!”

Shut up, you two,” growled Morrison. “You returned the bike no problem. So stop fucking arguing about it.”

Morrison started the SUV and drove off to inform Matt that the stolen goods were safely returned.
