Chapter 3: Necromancy
#3 of Crimson Twilight
"What the hell are you doing here!?" The buck practically screamed at the four furs in the middle of his warehouse.
"Call off your undead Rem! Send them after the Kindred!" Mike turned to Cygnus as he shouted these words and lunged at him. Cygnus dodged him easily and pulled his sword from it's hidden pocket. The young mouse pulled a knife, almost long enough to be called a sword, from a hidden sheath on his jeans and lunged at Hark. The taur stepped back out of the mouses range, only to be tackled by a rotted anthro bloodhound. Mike leaped at Cygnus again, this time finding his mark with one of his claws. He dug a deep gouge into Cygnus's arm and hopped away to avoid Cygnus's sword. Rem raised his black handled scimitar and charged the bucking taur, planning to jam the sword into his heart. He thrusted the sword forward, only to have it deflected by one of Harks flailing hooves. Jr. was knocked to the ground by one of those hooves, and lashed out with his blade, attempting to cut Harks tendons. The battle went on for what seemed like an eternity. Cygnus and Mike making quick single strikes, doing little damage to each other. The trio in the corner deflecting each others swings and dodging the undead trying to eliminate them. Cygnus stumbled on a small group of spent casings and fell back against Rem. The buck turned and brought his sword down, only to have his swing blocked by Cygnus's blade. Hark pulled a knife from a sheath on his hip and drove it forward towards the mouse. Jr. hopped back and got stuck between the blade locked Cygnus and Rem. Mike saw his chance and struck. It was by pure luck that the sun started to rise. Mike felt the strength leave his body mid-swing, making it possible for Rem to grab the kindreds arm and hold him back. Hark swung at Cygnus, managing to get himself caught up in the blade lock. The group stood in silence, all of them too tired to continue to fight.
"So Marie, can Mike really get this done?" The Ventrue lion sat in his chair, sipping from a cup of black coffee.
"He'll get it done. He's been feuding with Cygnus for years, and with that mage there there's no chance he'll fail." Marie sat in her chair contemplating her plan. There were plenty of places for slip-ups. The Bruja might arrive too late, or too early. The mage might not be as powerful or short tempered and territorial as he's rumored. Mike might not get there in time... so many possibilities. But she had to take the chance. Kindred society has gotten tired of Mike's violent outbursts, his incredibly rude demeanor, and his multiple breaks of the Masquerade. Not to mention the decades of requests for a move of his haven. Cygnus has been just as much a thorn as Mike. He's killed several dozen high ranking Kindred and a slew of lower associates. How he managed to take out so many and remain alive was absolutely beyond her. But that rat, Quinn it might have been, there was something strange about him. He gave them the information they wanted, but requested no payment. What he wanted made Marie want to wring his wicked neck. She might be a blood drinking monster, but to want ones own flesh and blood dead... it was despicable. "At least this way we all get some relief from those two." The lion nodded, his black mane flowing with him.
"Yes yes. I can't forgive that Kine for killing Zeno. I hope that the Bruja you hired don't do anything to his head. I want it stuffed and hung above my mantle."
The five stood in the middle of the rot scented warehouse, blades and claws locked, all trying to get the energy to continue fighting. "Hark... what time is it?"
"It's, gah, six o'clock. We have to leave. There's a sewer grate in the alley, that'd be our best course of action." Mike was about to break for the door when Cygnus asked the question on all of their minds.
"Why were we all sent here?" The room fell silent and the advancing undead stopped in their tracks.
"I wasn't sent. I live here you bastard! I bet you all came here to kill me!" Rem pushed his blade against Cygnus' to emphasize his point.
"But we aren't. I came here expecting to kill some fledgling Sabbat." Cygnus looked to Mike.
"We came here to kill Cygnus, we didn't know you were going to be here. So just back the fuck off!" Mike tried to swipe at the buck, but he wasn't in a good enough position to hurt Rem. Cygnus shouted at the squabbling furs,
"Stop it! Now there's something wrong with all of this. I think we've all been set up." Mike burst into a fit of laughter,
"Set up!? What do you think this is? A cop drama show? I just told you I was sent here to kill you! It's obvious you were set up. The fact that this happens to be a death mages lair is a coincidence."
"There's no such thing as a coincidence Mike. Someone had to know about this lair. Rem, who else knows about this place?" The buck closed his eyes.
"Oh man, uhm, there's the guy who works at the morgue. I brought him over here once cause he wanted to become a mage."
"And how do you know he didn't tell anyone? My point is I think that all of us have been sent here to kill each other." Rem knew the bull had told someone, it would have been hard to keep secret. Just as he was about to defend his obvious lax in common sense he heard the door to the alley opening. From the semi-darkness the five could hear voices.
"I told you to hurry up! Now the sun is coming up and I'm tired as hell."
"Yeah, but it was worth it wasn't it? I told you her tits were bigger than my head." A bout of laughter from the dark, and a group of four coyotes stepped into the dim light. All of them wearing leather jackets and dirty blue jeans. They all recognized them as Bruja, a Bloodline of the Gangrel. The four coyotes stopped dead as they saw the five, still blade locked. The Brujah on the left reached for something in his pocket, but Hark was too fast. He streaked across the room and insane speed and slashed with his knife. The Brujah's head fell from his shoulders. His body stood for a split second before his flesh turned to dust, leaving his skeleton to fall into a pile on the ground. The other three backed away pulling their weapons from their pockets. All of them armed with extendable batons. The remaining four broke their lock and charged the three remaining Brujah. The undead strewn about the room broke into a shamble, reaching out for the coyotes, eerie moans escaping from their rotted throats. Rem was the first to reach the group, holding up his paw. The closest Kindred froze up, his eyes squinting in effort to move his arms. The buck jammed the sword with all his might into the Brujah's heart. The kindred shuddered and fell to the ground. Mike, as tired as he was, threw his own knife with pinpoint accuracy. It slammed into the heart of one of the remaining Brujah, dropping him as well. The third, seeing his bretheren so quickly dispatched stepped back, right into the arms of an awaiting undead. The unindentifieable mass, grabbed the coyote and bit down onto his neck with powerful jaws. As he started to swing the creature over his shoulder another zombie latched on to his arm. Another shambled over, tripped, and grabbed onto his leg. More and more undead shambled from the dark to latch onto the dumbstruck Kindred. Soon the only part of his body that was visible was his head, twisting and turning as he tried to dislodge the rotting husks. The group approached the trapped coyote. Cygnus stepped forward,
"Well now, what do we have here?" He lashed out with a clenched paw, breaking the creatures muzzle with a hideous snap. There was no reaction from the coyote, and in seconds his muzzle started to straighten with sickening snaps and pops. Once it was back to it's original state he spat at Cygnus.
"You filthy Kine! Just get it over with and kill me!" The black lab lashed out again, re-breaking the coyotes muzzle.
"Now every time you don't answer a question I'm going to break your nose again. Now, who sent you here?" By now the coyotes muzzle was back to normal. He spat at Cygnus again, the spittle landing on his black duster. He broke the coyotes nose again, a bit of blood spurting onto the floor. "Y'know if I keep doing that you're gonna loose all your blood. Then you'll get hungry, then you'll frenzy. And from what I'm told that isn't fun."
"Fuck you!" The coyote mumbled through his broken muzzle. He continued to struggle, to no avail. Mike stepped forward.
"Look... dude... we just want to know who sent you here to kill us. Is that too much to ask?" The coyote stared for a second as his face healed.
"Ugh, fine you filthy Kine lover. We were sent here by Marie. We were told to kill all of you. The lab, the taur, you, the mage, and the kid." Cygnus ran this through his mind. Obviously they'd want me dead, but this is the kids first hunt. And why would they want Mike and the taur dead, or the mage for that matter. Mike leaned forward a bit more.
"So how did she find out the mage lived here?" The coyote stopped struggling.
"A white rat. Quinn I think. He only had half a tail, kinda greasy looking." Jr. meeped at the mention of his father. He stepped back and dropped his gun. Cygnus hung his head at this statement, speechless at the news. A voice rang out from the door.
"You stupid bastard!" They all looked to the door. Standing in the ruined doorway was Quinn Sr. He still had the cast and cane. Jr. stepped to the doorway.
"But... but dad, why?" Quinn Sr. took a step into the warehouse.
"Because you little shit. You've been a pain in my ass since your mother died. You can't shoot to save your life, you knife skills are shit, you whine constantly."
"But dad..."
"Don't 'but dad' me! I told them about this place on the single condition that they make sure you're among the dead. I'm only here now to pick up my weapons, and it looks like you can't even DIE properly!" Jr.'s eyes started to tear up and he dropped his knife.
"But daddy..." He managed to choke out between soft sobs. "I-I love you dad." The young rat broke down and started to weep openly now. He held his paws to his face, tears leaking out from between his fingers. Cygnus couldn't take anymore.
"You sick fuck. How could you do this to your own flesh and blood!?" Cygnus raised his blade and walked towards the rat in the doorway. Quinn Sr. saw the lab walking towards him, and kicked with his cast clad paw, the cast flying off and hitting Cygnus in the forehead. Cygnus yelped and fell to the ground, holding his bleeding head. Quinn turned to his son and raised his cane. An undead cow stepped between the two just as Sr. twisted the handle and loud crack was heard. Buckshot flew from the bottom of the cane and slammed into the zombie cow. Sr. took off down the alleyway, escaping into the dawn. Cygnus managed to get to his feet, his head still spinning from getting hit by the rock like cast. Mike tackled the lab from behind, knocking him to the floor.
"Mike wait!" Mike turned his head to see Hark standing over him.
"Why the hell would I!? I've been waiting for this for years!" Hark reached down and put a heavy paw on the fox's shoulder.
"What is the point to killing him? Everyone in this room right now is wanted dead, if we were to work together..." He was cut off as Mike shrugged off the Rot-Taur's paw.
"The point would be to end this feud! I'll finally have gotten him for what he did!" The only sound in the room was coming from the sobbing rat, he had fallen to his knees and continued to sob, despite the dispute happening feet from him. Rem stepped forward and stood next to the vampire.
"Let him up dude. Your friend has a point, our hostage has made it very clear that we've become a thorn in someones side. As much as I hate working with... you things, if we want to survive it must be done." Mike looked down and stared at the squirming lab underneath him. He raised his claws, and paused. It's so close... I have his life in the palm of my fucking hands! I'll never be this close again! He tensed up, preparing to strike. And dropped his arm.
"Fine. What do we now then?"
"You can start by getting off of me!" Cygnus pushed himself up and tried to get to his feet. Mike pushed the lab into the dirt before removing his heavy boot. Quinn still sobbed in the corner, his shoulders heaving with his cries.
"What do we do with those three?" Hark asked. Cygnus looked to the two unsconcious Kindred, and the still squirming, undead covered one. The buck grinned, his eyes running over the creatures.
"I'll keep them. I've always wanted "live" Kindred to perform a few experiments on." He walked to the vampire still conscious, pulling a long knife from his pocket. The undead covering the unfortunate creature move to expose his chest. Rem jammed the knife into his chest, penetrating his heart, his mind quickly slipping into unconsciousness. Rem stood and called out to his undead. "Take them downstairs, chain them up. Oh, and you two, you can stay with me. You'll have to sleep soon, but I don't, I can keep watch." Hark and Mike looked to each other and followed the three kindred being dragged by the zombies.
"I'm going to be back tomorrow night." Cygnus told the buck. "We need to work out what to do." Rem burst out laughing, his chuckles drowning out Quinn's sobs.
"Do!? We're gonna hide! That's what we're gonna do. We're all being hunted by Kindred, what else do you think we can do!?" Cygnus ignored the bucks cackling and grabbed the rats arm.
"C'mon Quinn, you're gonna stay with me." Quinn wrenched his arm away from the Lab. Cygnus heaved a sigh and grabbed for the kids arm. Pulling him to his feet."Calm down kid, I know this is kind of a fucked up situation, but sometimes you have to just roll with the punches." Quinn lashed out with his foot and kicked Cygnus in the shin. He ignored the pain and stared at the red eyed rat.
"That's it? You just want me to move on? My father just tried to kill me! Ev... everything we did together, all of the days he spent training me. It was all a lie..." He buried his face in his paws again and resumed crying. Cygnus grabbed the rat by the collar and lifted him up so he had to look into his eyes.
"At least he's still alive!" He shook the still sobbing rat, "MY parents were killed, in front of me, when I was younger than you!" He stared at the rat, anger blazing in his eyes. He dropped the child to the floor."Now you can stay here..." He waved his arm, motion to the disgusting warehouse, "Or you can come home with me, and be much warmer, and slightly safer." Quinn sniffled and nodded, following Cygnus to the street, and soon after getting into the cab with him.
