Evac Day +187
I killed a man. Stabbed him. Right in the chest. I feel so numb. I never thought that it would come to this. That I would have to kill anybody.
I was looking for food in an old supermarket. The place was completely barren. There wasn't a single can of beans or box of rice anywhere. But I had had an odd feeling all day. Like I was being watched. I was coming around an aisle near where the dairy products must've been before they were all taken and almost ran into him. We both fell over in a heap.
He got up first. And he had a hatchet. He raised it above his head with this look... it was the most driven look I have ever seen. He brought it down and I threw my arms up to block it. I ended up getting a gash across my left arm and the metal shaft of the hatchet across the right. I think it fractured a bone, but I don't know for sure. It still hurts and there is a terrible bruise there.
When the first attack didn't kill me, he drew back for another one. I managed to kick him in the gut and get him away from me, giving me enough time to stand up and grab my knife. When he came at me again, I just... I ducked under the attack and stabbed him. There was a sound like a thud of some sort before he just stood there. The hatchet dropped to the floor.
Then he looked at me. I'll never forget his face. He was a lupine. He wasn't gaunt, so he had been eating well. His eyes were green. He looked at me for what seemed like forever, not blinking and just staring me in the eye. I saw fear in them. Fear and despair.
Then he dropped to the floor. Dead. I was still holding the knife that had come free. It was the spattering of blood on the floor as it dripped from the blade that got me to realize what had just happened. I had just killed a man. I remember swallowing. Then, on some odd whim, I decided to look through his backpack. I almost threw up. I saw why he had looked so well-fed. A pouch of his bag was full of ears. Actual ears. Just... It was disgusting. I didn't touch the bag after that.
He must have been killing others and stealing their supplies. Following them around and then killing them to get what they had gathered up. I explored the supermarket a bit more. He must have been using it as a safehouse, because there was a small camp set up in the back near the meatlocker stuffed to the door with food and supplies. Then I looked in the meatlocker. I promptly threw up all over the floor and ran from the room.
There were people in there. Not alive, but dead. Hung from the ceiling like cattle. And they were butchered. Gods, it was awful. I do not think I will be getting any sleep for a few nights now.
