Now on the eve of my nineteenth birthday I feel it's time for me to leave my home. This was something I'd been thinking about for a while now but, couldn't find a reason. "Corey, my son this letter came for you." Miranda said handing it to me. "Thank you mother was this all that came in the mail." I replied taking it. "Yes, that letter is from government but, my question is why?" She wondered. "Not sure we'll find out." I smiled. Once I got it opened I took my time reading the letter.

When I finished reading the letter fell slowly to the ground. At that moment she knew what kind of letter it was. "I'm being drafted into the military." I said. "Oh, No! When will you be leaving son?" She asked as tears started rolling down her face. "I have to leave ASAP and report to Fort Civic." I informed. "It's a two hour drive there and you have no means of getting there." She replied. "Not necessarily I have something for you, Corey follow me." Azalea stated standing in the doorway. So we walked outside, what I saw next was more than I dreamed. It was an old 70's style pick up truck a tad beat up but, in good shape.

"Where did you get this truck from?" I wondered. "It was lying around in one of the barns collecting dust. I called in a favor they came down and repaired it. This way it safe to drive on the road and I know you got your license. Consider this my farewell to you my friend." She smiled as I hugged her. "This is too much I don't know what to say. Thank you my friend I'll treasure this forever." I said letting her go. "The sooner you leave the better not that I want you to go." She pointed out.

After about an hour I got all my belongings packed and loaded into the truck. It was heartbreaking for not only me but, the people I called family. My foster mother Miranda took me leaving the hardest but, she knew I'd be back. As for High Priestess Azalea she knew that we would see each other again in this world or the next. The last thing she did was give me her favorite snowflake tag. I simply placed it on my monastery collar which I earned when I came of age.

Once everyone had a final chance to say goodbye, I got into the truck and drove away. All I could see was my family and friends waving me off. Until I could now longer see them in the mirror I focused on my driving. This was the start of something far greater in my life. I would have to make the best of this one way or another. After two hours of steady driving I arrived at Fort Civic's main gate. Once the guard carefully looked over my paperwork he told me where to go next.

It didn't take long for me to arrive at the medical office. Where they would do a complete check up on me. The nurse couldn't believe her eyes when she walked into the exam room. She took one look at me, her face turned bright red then she quietly left. Of course I'm sitting there trying to figure out what happened. The doctor came in I was a little shocked to see another woman come in. "Please stand up, feet together, arms out to the side and tail pointing towards the wall behind you." She instructed. So I did as she told me then she turned around and began her examination.

"Good muscle tone, no body fat, strong sense of balance and very acute senses. Now I'm going to ask you a few routine questions, alright." She stated. "Yes, ma'am." I answered putting my arms and tail down. "Are you allergic to any food, pollens, dander or medicine?" She asked. "No, ma'am." I replied. "Have you any medical conditions that would limit your ability to perform under highly stressful situations?" She asked. "No, ma'am." I replied. "Good, now for a reflex test please sit back down." She stated. Once I sat down she tested all my reflexes with each result she wrote it down.

"What's next ma'am?" I wondered. "Blood work and a urine sample followed by booster shots. You can put your pants back on before the lab tech comes in." She informed. "Thank, you." I said grabbing them. When she left the room I could hear her mutter, damn. I sat there wondering what she was referring to but, I drop it. Luckily I was able to put my pants back on. By the time I buttoned them the lab tech walked into the room with the equipment.

"So you're the young man causing quite a stir around here. Especially among the female staff. Alrighty, let's get this over with shall we." He smiled grabbing a syringe. It didn't take him long to draw blood and give me the booster shots. Once I returned with my urine sample he took it and left. About ten minutes later the doctor that checked me out came back. "Corey, you can go now we don't need anything else. Now, report to the tailor to be fitted for a uniform and for a hair cut." She instructed. "Yes, ma'am." I replied walking out of the room.

The tailor was a ten minute walk from the medical center. I was kind of grateful that the line wasn't very long. It took the tailor about five minutes to get me fitted. He then had me change into the uniform, then gave me my dog tags. My next stop was the barber for a haircut, not something I looked forward too. When I walked inside there were a few soldiers ahead of me. The sergeant standing there took one look at me and walked right over.

"Well, well look at what I found here ladies, a fruit cup." He said. "Hello, I'm in the right place for a hair cut." I replied. "Yeah, but, you're not getting just a trim miss. Nope, for from it actually that mop of your's is going bye, bye." He smiled reaching for my ponytail. Before he could grab it I spun around and pinned him against the wall. I grabbed his arm and bent it high up against his back. I kicked the knife he had sheathed at his side out and placed it against his throat.

"I don't like anyone touching my ponytail especially someone rude like you." I replied adding pressure to his left arm. "Alright son I think he gets the picture." Another soldier said walking in. So I kindly let him go and returned his knife then redirected my attention. "Sorry, sir I grew up in a monastery part of the tradition. Did I hurt you sir?" I said looking at the sergeant. "I'll live I gotten worse from trimming." He replied rotating his arm. "Come, with me son I think you would benefit being in my Squad. Instead of going where you're originally assigned." The officer pointed out as I followed him.

"Aren't you going to discipline me for attacking him?" I wondered. "Nope, not with moves like that. You have a strong warrior's spirit and i'm going to help you refine it. Of course the training you had already is nothing compared to what I have in store." He stated. "Will I still need to get my hair cut?" I asked. "No, if that's how you want to look then that's fine. By the way my name is Major Strife Brad I'll be your new commanding officer." He replied. "I'm Corey Rolin sir." I stated.

"You going to be a part of the Dusk Spear Squad. It's a small unit of highly skilled soldiers much like yourself. Your training will involve learning everything from your comrades and they you. Basically, it's the way I do things is everyone learns and masters their comrade's specialties. Also you'll be taught in several languages and how to deal with extreme levels of pain. On top of all that you'll be introduced to every kind of truth serum out there. Also on how to use your body to counteract them effectively. That training will test the very fabric of your mind, body and spirit." He informed as we reach their barracks.

"Sir, I have a question." I said. "Sure, go ahead." He replied. "Who do I report to when we get there?" I asked. "Come, on I'll bring you right to her." He said ushering me inside. "SQUAD, ATTENTION." A soldier barked. Everyone in the room stood up as if somebody important walked in. "At ease, where's Gina?" He asked the closest soldier. "She's in her office doing paperwork I believe, sir." He replied. "Typical, that woman never knows when to stop working. Wait here I'll go get her everyone listen up you're leave this recruit alone. Until I return, understood." Strife said. "SIR." They responded.

Once he left our sight everyone focused their attention on me. I knew they weren't going to do as he instructed. The closest person to me was a Pinto stallion. Before he could do anything I stared him down. He politely backed off the others saw his reaction and quietly did the same. I walked back outside and sat down on the stairs. That very same guy walked over to the others on the couch. So out of curiosity I listened in on their conversation.

"That's one guy I never want to see pissed off." He said. "What do mean, Jacob he can't be all that scary." A woman replied. "I don't know why he pulled that stunt for. The look he gave wasn't one to be taken lightly believe me. Imagine what he might have done to the rest of us, Erica." Another male stated. "That shouldn't matter he had no right to do that to his superior." A second woman pointed out. "Hera, don't judge a book by its cover. He a lot tougher than he's actually letting on." Jacob pointed out after gathering his wits.

"You may be right Jacob that man over there comes from a monastery. He's by far the best trained fighter in this outfit. Unfortunately, he has a lot to learn about being a soldier. Corey, get your tail in here and meet your comrades." Strife ordered. "Yes, Sir." I replied getting up and walked inside. "He's certainly well structured I guess the rumors at the medical building were true." The female hyena smiled. "Don't even think about it, Silk. Besides I don't think he'll let you anywhere near him. Especially in that particular regard beside aren't you engaged to, Rianne?" Strife stated. "Yes, sir but, he's something special." She replied looking at me while I did the same.

So once I was standing in front of everyone the commander looked around. "Let's get you acquainted with your comrades then I'll show you to your bunk." He informed. "Roll, call." Silk ordered. "Sgt. Maj. Vince Kenneth." He stated. "Master Sgt. Hera Corve." She stated. "Gunnery Sgt. Araya Bistor." She stated. "SGT 1st. Class Jacob Marksmith." He stated. "Staff Sgt. Dave Solely." He stated. "Staff Sgt. Erica Willis." She stated. "Sgt. Alice Robin." She stated. "I'm Captain Gina Silk." She replied stepping forward.

"Let's get you settled in and tomorrow will bring you up to speed." Major Strife informed as I followed him. Some how my first night here wasn't going to be a pleasant. Granted I've been through worse but, I could be corrected. For now I'll play along it's not the lower ranks that have me worried. At the moment it's the second in command of this unit that does. She's a nice woman in many ways but, she's planning something.

I spent most of the afternoon getting to know my comrades. They came from all over the place three of them different countries. A few of them couldn't believe where I hailed from. The men were bent because I was surrounded by beautiful women. What made it worse was when I showed them pictures of my foster mother, High Priestess Azalea and all the monks at the monastery. The only thought on their minds why I didn't fool around with any of them? So I explained that the high priestess can wed and bare children on the temple grounds. If any of the other monks want that they can leave at their discretion.

As dinnertime rolled around my new comrades got up and left for the mess hall. I wasn't hungry so I spent my time getting my room organized. Made sure just to unpack my underwear nothing else of a personal nature. This if we received orders to move out I wouldn't have some much to pack up. Right now I'm just enjoying the solitude until everyone returns from the mess hall. Until I heard someone climbing the stairs and walking down the hall.

"So here you are, Corey I thought you went to the mess hall with the others." Silk replied entering my room. "Wasn't hungry ma'am, is there something you need me to do?" I replied standing up. "Relax, I just came here to see if anyone was still hanging around. Since you're here would you care if I joined you?" She smiled. "I don't mind surely you have other things to do besides hang around the barracks." I stated. "No, I finished my work a moment ago. As I left my room I saw a light on up here so I investigated." She informed.

"Not to sound direct but, why are you actually here?" I said. "Simple, I want to measure you up for the commander. So far you aren't all that special in my eyes. Though feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong." She replied with a smile. "Then you should head over to the medical building and ask around. You might find the replies you get might change your opinion." I stated looking back. "I already know what happened you nearly put three women into heat. Granted I know it wasn't your intention but, I consider that to be a dangerous weapon." She said.

"Yeah, my mother said the same thing to me once before. She warned me that it would be a blessing and a curse." I replied returning to my work. "I see this might shock you but, do you know how to use it?" She wondered. "Not something I'd be willing to show you beside the commander told you to behave." I pointed out. "How did you hear about that?" She questioned. "I have very sensitive ears so, yeah I heard." I said.

"Well, you can't blame a naughty woman for trying." She smiled. "No, I can't." I pointed out. The rest of our unit returned as she left my room. Luckily before they walked by and saw the two of us together. I was in no mood to be harassed by people I barely know. Since I'm here I might as well write home to let them know I arrived. Though I know for a fact my mother must be worried sick. A letter from me should help settle her nerves some.

Once I got what I needed to write my letter my commanding officer walked by. "Corey, here you are, where have you been? I was looking for you in the mess hall." He said standing on the side of the desk. "Sorry, sir I wasn't hungry I wanted to get some things unpacked. I'm just about to write a letter to my foster mother." I replied. "That's fine but, do keep the letter you write short and sweet. Just be sure to tell her you won't be able to send any letters for a while." He stated. "Why's that sir?" I wondered.

"Since you are now apart of Special Forces. You'll be able to send one more letter after your training is done but, that's it. I don't like saying it but, the less contact you have with family and friends the better. Some missions we do are very dangerous and you might not come home." He said bowing his head. "Sure, I understand, sir I'll make sure she knows." I stated. "Very good make sure you turn in early understand. Training starts at 5am so get all the sleep you can." He informed exiting the room.

Easy for him to say but, I might as well make the best of it. Once I finished writing my letter, I turned in for the night. Around 4am the next morning I woke up got dressed and went down stairs. Since nobody was awake yet I decided to do my normal morning routines. That I practiced at the monastery they would help me loosen up. During what ever was planned for us today. As I went through each forum taking care as not to wake anyone.

By the time I finished the clock read quarter of five. So I stopped, cleaned up and put on a clean uniform. When I returned to the recreation room Araya and Silk were up. I kept to the shadows for a little while as they talked. Sure enough after a while they became aware of my presence. "Good, morning how long have you been up?" Silk asked. "About an hour why?" I replied joining them. "Just curious so how did you sleep?" She wondered. "Fine, not used to sleeping on a bed." I said.

"Well, I thought for a minute there I was going to have to wake the new guy." Jacob said coming downstairs. "At least he can get up on his own unlike some men." Araya stated. "Don't go there, Araya." He replied as he sat down on the couch. "I think she already did, Jacob." I replied. "And I don't need some smart mouth pup poking his nose where it doesn't belong." He snapped. "That's enough both of you, don't make me pull rank here." Silk pointed out.

"Yes, ma'am." We said. "Good, cause today everyone is going to be going back to basics. So I get yourselves ready for a very busy day." She informed. Sure enough at 5:30 this morning the whole unit was up. Strife came down and had everyone follow him to where we'd be training. "Alright listen up this morning training will be much different. I want all of you to spend the day bringing him up to speed. Once that's done one of take him and teach him your talents. Corey, I expect the same thing from you understand." He pointed out.

"I'm afraid I don't know much, sir." I replied. "As a former monk surely you could show us something. Along the lines of martial arts techniques and exercises." He stated. "I'd love to sir but, it would go against my beliefs." I informed. He didn't say anything but, the look in his eyes said it all. I knew he was disappointed but, as a monk teaching outsiders was forbidden. "Very well then you'll have to relearn how to defend yourself. For now I'll leave your training the hands of the others." He said as he walked away.

Once he left Silk made sure that they knew what the commander wanted. After that was sorted out one by one they took me out into the training area. They put me through my paces both mentally and psychically. This went on for the next few months without any breaks. I figured it was time to send my final letter to my foster mother. She knew that I was allowed to send one more letter then I had to break all contact. This letter wasn't going to be easy for me to write but, it was orders.

I'm sure once my service time is up I can go home. A lot can happen between now and in the next seven years. So I'm not going to get ahead of myself until something comes up. With my training complete now it all boils down to whether or not a mission is assigned. That was the case the following morning we received orders that we being shipped out overseas. There was verbal debate that may turn violent soon if something isn't done.

The country we're going to is an allied nation but, their neighbors feel they aren't being protected. So our unit is being sent in to pick up the slack temporarily. Unfortunately there are rogue troops in the area we're being sent to. So this was going to be a real picnic for everyone involved. This was the kind of thing I trained hard for so I was ready. For some reason I was a little nervous but, it's too be expected. Once we boarded the plane and took off, my nervousness went away.

"Everyone look in, here's how things are and why we're being sent in." Strife stated. So we focused our attention on him as he pulled up a chart. "So what's our primary objective, sir?" Vince replied. "We're going to parachute into this abandoned town. There's a small city northeast that has been overrun with rogue troops. Our job is to get rid of them in a safe and clean manner. Also we're to capture any high ranking officers for questioning. I don't want any unnecessary bloodshed I merely want to scare them off. Now this serves as a reminder and a future heads up. If you just so happened to be captured by the enemy you're on your own." Strife informed.

I took a deep breath, held it then let it out a moment later. Since we're a few hours out I figured it best to meditate until we arrived. As for the others they did their own thing to prepare. "Alright, troops we're an hour out get your gear ready." Strife ordered. By the time we got everything in order the pilot came over the loud speaker. "Alright, everyone get lined up to jump." He announced as the cargo doors opened. Sure enough it

went in order highest rank jumped first and so forth.

Parachuting down was fun but, the sudden stop sucked. Granted the landing was gentle for everyone except for me, stupid cactus grove. Other than having to pull needles out my legs and butt I'd live. Once my comrades decided quit picking on me the commander got our attention. "Alright, Spears we're about twenty miles away from our destination. We should get there by sunset depending on how long it takes for the enemy to notice us. If they haven't already so, let's move out." Strife stated.

Over the next few hours the town we were to be stationed at came into view. After the sun fully set our unit finally entered the town. Most of the townsfolk had gone home or gone inside for the night. So we made our way towards the town square to get our equipment ready. The commander told everyone to patrol the city until dawn. He also told us to report back here every two to three hours. So we split off in pairs Araya and I went towards the gate that we entered from.
