Project Mitosis: Chapter 2: Verification
#3 of Project Mitosis
Markus here once again with the second actual chapter of Project Mitosis. If you haven't read the first chapter or the prologue, I suggest you do so to acquaint yourself with the story so far. Anyhow, after this chapter I'm going to have to take a break for a while, personal matters arising soon and I hope to fill the time before then by working on the novel.

Darwin's Genesis ascended to the position it did for one reason; the impossibility of it all. In the early 21st Century, genetic research reached a point mankind called grandeur; yet in reality they were nowhere near as experienced as they believed. At that time, all geneticists believed DNA, the genetic structure that defines and maintains the human body, was adamant in terms of shape and flexibility.
All except one, that is. When Doctor Leo Ivanek began his research that would lead to Darwin's Genesis, he did so with one belief in mind, the belief that the only thing we can truly know is that we exist. By using this belief, Ivanek experimented with the genetic structure and within a few years proved to the entire world the genetic code was not as permanent as we had believed. As mentioned before, the epitome of this experimentation was the synchronization of both human and animal genes.
As Subject 1 was revealed to the world, the first reaction was the typical human reaction to the unknown; resentment and confusion. However, when Mwimbaji, who was not yet president of Africa at this time, supported the research, the discovery was taken in an entirely new light. As briefly mentioned before, it was through the media that this research resurfaced the long forgotten possibility of complete genetic splicing.
From that point, the world changed almost exactly as I described in my very first entry. Yet, how can we assume Darwin's Genesis was Ivanek's final experiment? Now that I know he is still alive, as well as in such a condition to continue his work, I truly begin to fear what the doctor has in mind. Furthermore...why me? I mean, if I'm truly relevant to all of this, why is it I never cloned myself before? And why then, what was so important about that fight on the street that made the SRS activate?
I suppose the only way I can answer those questions is by following the good doctor and seeing where the rabbit hole takes me.

As the Komodo dragon entered the last digit of the keypad password, the large double metal doors hissed as they decompressed and slowly slid into their pockets in the side of the walls. Turning his head to his right, Doctor Ivanek hissed a laugh and said "Come my boy, there iss ssstil ssso much to sse."
The doors now entirely engulfed by their tiny homes in the opposing walls, Derik Stone simply shrugged as he began to follow the good doctor into this highly secured section of what he could only assume was a laboratory. Within a few seconds, both the panther and the lizard had entered the new section, allowing the doors behind them to slide back into their protective stances with a pressurized hiss of relief.
Obediently following his aged tour guide, the panther found this new section entirely different from the rest of the complex. While the walls were still the reflective steel color, the overall layout of the place was like walking onto an alien spaceship. In the most basic of descriptions, it looked as if someone had completely hollowed out at least eight hundred feet of open space, protected it with layers of steel and then placed giant cubes of fortified metal wherever they could.
Turning to Ivanek, Derik asked, "What is all of this?"
His Russian accent surprisingly understandable, the Komodo dragon chuckled slightly as they continued walking and explained, "Thesse are the experimentation roomsss. Come, I'll sshow you one of our latesst."
Thin walkways of steel flooring being the only way to move through this labyrinth of cubes, the two new arrivals stopped at the first cube to their right, where Derik noticed that the walls of these giant constructs were made of two-way mirrors. Upon taking a look within the cube, the panther suddenly found himself horrified but at the same time sexually stimulated.
In the center of the room, at least two dozen flexible steel "rods" that were covered in a green gelatinous substance held a naked vixen suspended at least five feet in the air. As one gel-covered rod squirmed and satiated the vixen's sex, two more played with her breasts as the rest either explored as many holes as they could. Her pants and moans muffled by a rod that had managed to find its way into her muzzle, the defenseless fox made no sounds of protest or horror.
As the vixen body rocked back and forth in motion with her gelatinous lovers, Derik tore his eyes away from the spectacle to notice a camera planted in each corner of the cube's ceiling, each one giving special focus to the subject. Turning his head towards Ivanek, the panther questioned in a disgusted tone, "So not only do you experiment on these poor people, but you tape it as well?"
The vixen's juices streaming over the gelatin and onto the steel floor, the lizard turned his attention to Derik and replied easily, "Mosst of our experimentss, including the one you sse now, are our own ssscientisstss. Asss for the videoss, all experimentation musst be documented. Don't worry, my boy, ssshe wass the one who created thiss experiment.
The muffled moans and pants of the fox growing as every bit of her sex was touched and caressed by the main rod, Derik returned to watching the gelatinous rods have their way with her and mumbled softly "Great...I've been abducted by porno-making scientists..."
Shuddering and squirming intently as the feelers stimulated every part of her body, the vixen finally released a muffled yelp as she hit climax. Juices bursting from her sex like a broken dam, the flexible rods slowly brought the fox to the ground and returned to tiny circular ports in the ground, leaving her panting on the ground in ecstasy. Hearing a snap from Ivanek, Derik returned his attention to the good doctor just in time to see him begin moving down the walkway.
His tone becoming oddly serious, the Russian reptile didn't even bother to face Derik as he said "Boy, believe me when I sssay that wasss the only tesst that doess not deal with geneticsss. While I am the head doctor, I must give leniency to my ssubordinatess in termss of what they wisssh to tesst."
Sighing softly, Derik continued to follow Ivanek as he asked in response "Why even do this anymore, I mean you've become one of the richest men in the world thanks to Darwin's Genesis."
Turning towards the panther in a second with his eyes burning in rage, Ivanek hissed before retorting "The Genessiss wass only the beginning. Hell, I never even expected the outcome it produced. My idea wasss sssimple, prove human geneticss could be bent, which I did prove might I add. However...thosse damn government pigsss took my work and usssed it for their own needss."
Confused, Derik took one step back from the Komodo dragon and asked "What more could you possibly do, you single-handedly turned the entire world into Anthros."
Smiling devilishly in response, the good doctor only answered with "Follow me," before turning around again and leading the panther to another large cube.
At the next experimentation room Ivanek had them stop at, Derik wasn't sure how to describe his emotions. In the center of the room, a raccoon with brown fur and black stripes stood donned in a white cotton shirt and blue jeans. At the far right end of the room, four men donned in Kevlar vests held pistols ready in their hands and each one aimed at the subject. Suddenly, a soft beep rang throughout the cube, giving the four armed men the signal to fire at will.
As each concentrated beam of plasmatic light shot towards the raccoon, he merely smiled as his entire body was covered in a solid, reddish-white substance. Rushing up to the glass to get a better look, Derik couldn't help but gasp as he realized what that substance was.
In clarification, Ivanek spoke up and stated "That isss Project Iron Maiden. Though he iss male, hiss project name comess from hiss unique ability to force hiss boness through hiss skin, wearing them asss a protective armor. You ssee Derik Sstone, by manipulating hiss geneticss, I have fortified hiss boness to the point where they are sstronger than ssteel, which iss why HCL bulletss will not harm him."
Turning to Doctor Ivanek with his eyes wide in shock, Derik finally managed to ask "How...how many of him are there?"
Laughing softly in response, Ivanek's Russian accent chimed in "There iss only one Project Iron Maiden, though he iss but one out of the dozenss of ssiblingss you have. But come, sshowing you will be eassier than explaining."
And indeed, as the minutes turned to hours, Derik was shown at least forty more experiment cubes, each subject within holding a special ability through the means of changing their DNA to perform miraculous things. Out of all of them though, one subject scared the panther the most. Named Project Bombshell, this subject was a lioness with the ability to rearrange the chemicals and elements within others to turn them into living bombs. After her demonstration, Derik had turned to the Komodo dragon and asked "Why make people like this? Going beyond the boundaries we were given as living beings is dangerous in any sense."
Nodding, Ivanek answered "You will learn, given time."
When Derik's tour of the various experiments was finally concluding, Doctor Ivanek brought him to a hallway with giant steel double doors on either wall. Pointing to the doors on the left wall, the reptile began to say "Thesse two experimentss are my pride and joy. The one on your left iss Project Mitossiss, while the one on your right is Project Venuss, though out of the two, Project Mitossiss iss by far the more paramount."
As Ivanek made no motion towards either door, the panther looked at both sets of doors before asking "Will we be looking at these two?"
Laughing gently, the Komodo dragon turned to face the panther and answered "There iss no need, for you already know both of them. You, Derik Sstone, are Project Mitossiss. While ssome of my tesstss can encasse their body in bone or convert their body to liquid or solid insstantaneoussly, you alone have the ability to produce an exact copy of yoursself."
Thinking for a moment, Derik said "SRS...Self Replication System"
Clapping his scaled hands together, Ivanek replied "And ssmart asss well. Derik, you have two "masster copiess" of DNA within you. When the SRS activatess, your body actss like one giant cell and ssplitss apart into two sseparate Derik Sstoness. Hence the name Project Mitossiss. Yet, like all cellss, you can undergo this processs an infinite number of timess."
"So, you're saying I could fill this room with me simply by activating the SRS?"
Chuckling softly, the Komodo dragon answered "You could, but doing sso would desstroy you. We have not perfected the SRS; in fact you are the firsst sstable SRS ssubject we have produced. Producing one clone requiress a vasst amount of energy; by forcing multipless, you could causse an overload in the ssysstem, which would rip your body apart from the insside-out."
Sighing, Derik decided to switch topics by asking "What is so special about Project Venus?"
In response, an oh-so familiar voice cooed out from behind him "Project Venus refers to a Venus Fly Trap. The subject can seduce its target then manipulate its form to devour the target." As Derik turned around, he found his mother standing behind him in a pink vest half open with no shirt or bra underneath and tight black pants.
Caught in a sexually aroused surprise, Derik found he could not speak a single comprehendible word. Instead, Doctor Ivanek laughed softly as if her outfit didn't affect him at all and said "Ahh Trissha, sso nice of you to sstop by. Asss you can sse, we finally retrieved Project Mitossiss."
Her ears flattening against her head, Trisha nearly snarled at the Komodo dragon as she retorted with "I took him away from here because none of you cared for his wellbeing. I wasn't about to let you twist my son for your personal gain."
Shaking his head softly, Ivanek replied "The boy issn't even your DNA, you are hiss mother only becausse you proclaim yoursself to be hiss mother."
Turning to Ivanek, mother than to Ivanek again, Derik finally asked "She's not my real mother?"
Her expression softly wounded, Trisha sighed gently and answered "No Derik...you have no true mother. What the good doctor here forgot to mention to you is that you hold no human genetic material. The rest of the subjects, including myself, were made by combining human genes with animal genes. However, Ivanek here considers you especially important not only because of your ability but because he manufactured your development with only panther genetics."
Turning once again to Trisha, Derik finally asked "So...you're Project Venus?"
Ivanek now stepping into the conversation once again, the Komodo dragon answered Derik's question with "Correct, though I doubt her attemptss at sseducing you were with the intention of eating you. When you were first constructed, sshe was the one that opted to watch over you until we needed you for experimentation. Ssadly, she became too attached to you, and sso when we tried tessting your sself-reproduction limitss, sshe took you and ran."
Blinking heavily, Derik felt his muscles start to go numb and his thoughts turn to mush. Nearly tripping as he stood still, the panther looked back to Ivanek and mumbled "Over...ride...?"
In response, the Komodo dragon revealed a small wristband on his right arm that had a tiny keypad on its face. As the tranquilizers slowly whisked Derik away into slumber, Ivanek said "We'll ssee you in the morning Mr. Sstone."
