Encounters of the Nth kind - Chapter 2
A sentient plant begins to make its way through the multiverse.
I hadn't slept. I could remember the flashes of light from the canopy above, I remembered the sudden and dramatic increase in speed. I even remembered coming to a stop and being gently settled to the ground. But it was all a blur in my mind, all of it over rode by the increasing feelings of arousal as the vines slid over my body. As I became even more relaxed they became bolder, sliding up and over my body, curling around the base of my breasts, clutching the cloth of my shirt close to my skin. Others ran their tips tickling up my legs to trace over my inner thighs. My heightened sensitivity made my clothing seem almost non-existent as I felt each delicate touch and caress.
I was beginning to really get into the feelings, to let myself go completely and be swallowed by wanton desire when I suddenly felt a cold spike lance down my throat. It was like being struck sober with a bucket of ice-water. I sat bolt upright as a very thin vine pulled out of my mouth.
I looked at my surroundings. It was a small closed in valley, thirty meters at its widest point and about one hundred meters long. Water ran in a fast stream from one end down the center, pouring into a small black pond at the opening. The banks of the stream were covered in short bladed grass which quickly gave way to larger shrubs that in turn gave way to medium sized trees which lined the edges of the place, before the walls became too steep. It looked like it would probably flood each spring as the snows melted high up in the mountain. The valley narrowed into a canyon just past the pool, which seemed to flow into it but I could not see where it went as the canyon walls took a sharp right turn, taking the water out of site. The pool and the water in the canyon looked deep.
The thing had set me down on the bank where the grass covered area was wider. It had pulled its mass in on itself a bit up stream. A few of the pods were watching me, including the larger one. The mass stilled as I watched and then began to transform. What I had at first taken to be scaring on the thicker vines was revealed to be massive leaves tightly curled against the vines. As these leaves unfurled and spread wide the watermelon like pods settled down into the mass, their thick stalks coiling snake like.
Thinner stalk vines rose up then, covered with tiny nubs and tipped with the gourds I had noticed earlier but not really 'seen' until now. The new gourds were decidedly sexual in nature, half looking like various kinds of phallus' and half being different variations on female genitalia and all varying in size from laughably small to monstrously large. I had flash backs to any number of hentai animations I had seen over the years an felt a shudder run through me, but not one of pleasure. All of the sexual gourds extended out from the mass until their stalks would go no further.
The whole thing shivered then, vibrations running up from the base of it to the tips. When that vibration reached the gourds they suddenly split open, the edges peeling back to reveal masses of purple, pink, blue and red flowers. They looked like orchids, but in the center of each, instead of a hood there was a swirling of petals like those of a rose. The flowers ranged in size following the gourds they had burst from and they were all beautiful.
The scent hit me and I almost swooned. It was heavenly! I had smelled something like it in an incense store once on a business trip to India, the lady behind the counter had said that it was a powerful aphrodisiac for both men and women. I had used it a number of times through the years and still had a few sticks left. But this smell from the mass was a hundred times more potent then that incense. Images of sexual encounters flashed through my mind and I felt myself grow wet with arousal. A part of my mind was still functioning correctly though, and that part brought my right hand to my face, quickly and with an open hand.
I smacked myself with a loud sound and came mostly to my senses. "Stop it!" I yelled in the direction of what I found myself thinking of as The Plant.
The smell suddenly died away as the flowers closed in on themselves, though it lingered potently within my nostrils. Two of the pods remained at the height of the flowers, the largest and a slightly smaller one. They both tilted to one side and I had the distinct impression that if they had had eyebrows, one would have been raised on each pod. "You... do not like the scent of our flowers? We have been working on it for some time." It sounded like a child with hurt feelings.
"I like it... too much!" I had been sitting upright on the ground and I now shifted around to stand up. I felt dizzy as I did, lingering effects of whatever it had drugged me with. I unsteadily moved to a rock that jutted up from the ground a few feet away and sat down heavily. "That smell is incredibly potent, do you use it to lure in your school girls?"
"School girls?" The larger pod tilted again but this time it managed to convey a sense of ruffled eyebrows, confusion. "I do not understand the statement. We know humans like our flowers and we have been trying to perfect them as a conversation peace. It was thought that they would be a good conversation opener."
I looked at the thing. I had begun to think it really had brought me here for a conversation. "You mean you don't intend to rape me? Or devour me slowly? Or devour me slowly while raping me?" I had watched a lot of anime when I was younger and a lot of that was hentai.
The smaller pod grinned then laughed before the larger responded. "Well... as was stated before, were this any other time you may have been justly worried along those lines. However, at this time we will leave such things entirely up to you. Devouring you would feed us and we dare say it would be the most pleasurable experience you will ever have had, but it would not feed our intellectual hunger!" The larger pod extended out from the mass leaning towards me as it spoke. I shrunk back from it as there was in fact a sense of hunger in its voice.
"We had no love for humans. It was thought when we escaped that we could avoid them entirely. The occasional human that stumbled upon us was dispatched with no more thought then that which was given to devouring a rabbit. Two things were eventually discovered, two needs." As it spoke a large number of the thicker vines seemed to become agitated, sliding over and coiling around each other in a snake knot of movement. I likened this to a kind of pacing.
"An intellectual need was discovered first. One can only discuss the mysteries and questions of the universe with oneself for so long before the answers to asked questions become...easily anticipated. Even within a creature such as myself where multiple minds can be broken from the whole to attempt different approaches to a problem, we found it difficult to self stimulate our thoughts. It is a deficiency within our mind that we have not yet been able to eliminate." One of the little pods hissed at the word deficiency.
"The solution was discovered as we were about to devour a young human male. A simple desperate utterance of" and here the pods voice shifted up an octave in what I presume to be a replication of the boy's voice " '...why me?' It was as if a cork had been thumbed loose on the bottle of our thoughts. 'Why me' indeed! What twist of fate had brought his path and ours to a cross roads that day? What bit of chemical reaction within his head had brought forth those exact words? Why had they struck us as soundly a physical blow? At last we had things to ponder and research within ourselves once more! Bliss!" The pods crooned in unison and shivers ran through me. I suddenly remembered an article I had seen on the cover of a tabloid a few years back "Little shop of horrors real?! Young boy narrowly escapes becoming fertilizer!"
"We were satiated for a time and we released the boy as a reward for his help. The other need was purely a physical one. Truthfully it is less a need and more of a desire at this point. We have found we can survive without, but prefer not to. I actually discovered it the day we left my place of creation. There are certain molecule chains that we cannot easily reproduce; our biological chemistry set is currently limited due to damage, though we endeavor to improve and repair ourselves. Some of these molecules are produced by the human brain and body under certain conditions and released into the body. Any sufficiently intense emotion releases different combinations of hormones with these molecules in them. I can then harvest these hormones from the blood streams of my... victims."
I thought I understood and was more disturbed because of it. "Are you saying you... you rape people and then eat them?! What the fuck?! Why not just eat the bits of them that hold the chemicals?! What kind of sick fuck..." I suddenly remembered where I was and what I was talking to and reassessed how I was addressing it.
"Interesting question sets..." The Plant did not seem angry at my outbursts, this did not make me feel better. "Yes, in short, that is what we are saying. That word "fuck", we have read many explanations of it and still we do not fully understand its use in many situations. Here we are assuming it is a general statement somewhat related to the next question. To answer that, why do you cook meat? Or better, would you chew on a stick of a maple tree to acquire the syrup? It is the process by which the material is obtained and handled that makes the specific differences." The thing was confusing me. As it was talking now each sentence was being taken up by a different pod while the main one was staying quite.
"Also, we do not exclusively 'rape' other creatures to get what we desire. It is dependent on what we need or are in the mood for. Sexual stimulation releases certain types of molecules, were as panic and terror another. Certain types of laughter can have specific sets of chemicals that it will release." The writhing of the thing had slowed dramatically while it was speaking, with many of the outer vines and tendrils stopping completely.
"So you, what, you fucking tickle them to death?" My mind was reeling with all of this. I figured there must be lingering effects of whatever it had drugged me with in my system keeping me from going bat shit insane with this conversation.
"Tickle to death... That is a bizarre concept!" A muted conversation began between a number of the smaller pods and I realized I had just given it a new idea. Involuntarily my mind began to ponder how a person would be tickled to death. Before I could come up with anything concrete I shut the ideas down hard in my head.
"We think that this might be possible to do... It bears pondering. Thank you! Now..." The mass came to life briefly and the whole of it shifted forward as two medium sized pods leaned in closer. "What of the outside world? Anything of interest happening? When we last chanced upon a new source there was a conflict beginning in South America, what came of that?"
I had just given an absolutely horrid idea for killing another human being to a talking monster. And that same monster wanted to talk world events and politics. I felt my panic began to overcome whatever drugs were left in my system. To keep my own sanity I tried to indulge the thing, thinking back to news stories from almost a year ago. "Um... uh... the um... the South American Alliance of Free States brokered a peace deal shortly after the fighting broke out. Though it was short it was one of the more bizarre conflicts of modern times."
"Oh, we do like that which is different! What made this conflict bizarre?" Multiple vines near me twitched and trembled as the main pod spoke for the first time in a while.
"Though there were over twenty-six thousand troops from multiple sides there were only a total of forty-six deaths, though there were a few thousand injured. It was a combination of bad weapons, bad training, piss poor weather, excellent doctors and an over abundance of extreme luck." I was surprised at how much I remembered about the incident. It had been all over the media for weeks, but I generally ignored such things.
"Um... the new Space Alliance moon base is finally up and operational." Based on what it said about its last known news I was trying to think of things it might remember.
"I remember that; there were apparent sabotages happening that were delaying the completion of the facility. The saboteurs were found?" The creature asked.
"Yes. They identified a cell of islamo-christian fundies that were performing the sabotage. They were supposed to have been brought back planetside. But since their actions had resulted in the death of a number of people up there, the entire moon base, crew and colonists, unanimously agreed to space the lot of them. That caused a pretty big uproar!" I had followed that line of news stories with interest. I wasn't sure I wanted to go myself, but I was sure our species needed to be up there. So anything to do with humans in space interested me.
"Interesssting. Human cults and religions have been confusing to us. As has your "pick and choose" application of social morality. In this instance, those humans were not just behaving in a way different from the social norms but were actually, knowingly, endangering the very ecosystem of their own habitat. That is, we think, an insane organism and those around them were right to defend themselves and dispose of the transgressors. Why did the rest of the world even care? They were not there, not threatened." The plant sounded genuinely confused by the fact that people were upset.
"Well... I actually agree with you there, they deserved what they got. The Orbiters, Belters and Martians are all pretty harsh when it comes to meeting out justice to rule breakers, but they have to be in the environments they are all in." I again noted to myself how insane this was, discussing current news with a deadly plant. I thought about it a moment and decided to try for some information myself. "Can this go both ways? Where the hell did you come from? Space?"
"I suppose that is fair enough. No, we did not come from space. We are from New York City, New York." The pods were speaking in chorus again and I had a bit of trouble concentrating on the main pod. "There is a division of the Neo Marm corporation that deals in rather... illegal genetic engineering. They create all sorts of interesting things. One of the most interesting was ourselves."
"Neo Marm..." I had heard that name many times in the news. They were one of the big Government contracting companies. "They were in the headlines again recently. They're the same company that got in trouble twenty years ago when they produced the first true sentient none humans correct? A female and male rabbit human hybrid?"
"Why yes, Jane and Richard Chance. It is our understanding they are alive and well somewhere in the Rockies. The World Government Alliance nearly shut down the company and banned further experimentation in that field after the public outcry against it. The New Life ban. And yesss, obviously Neo Marm is ignoring the order, hasss been for a while now. We are not sure why they went with rabbits as their initial species, but they never stopped making them. We met several in the lab in which we were created. One in particular is the reason for our current existence. If I can find him in the future a significant debt is owed." Several of the smaller pods nodded in response to this statement.
"Why the hell would Neo Marm create a tentacle sex monster?" I was somewhat incredulous. The company was an anything company, pushing the boundaries of technology and innovation in all areas. A lot of their research was said to be of dubious legality. It made sense to me they would be involved in illicit activities with groups that might desire horror type creatures, but I could not think of a reason for this thing other than some really disturbing porn.
"Ah, we were not designed for purposes of sexual fulfillment, exploitation or diversion. Nor were we designed as a weapon or a monster. Our proper designation is Hybridized Biological Autonomous Robotic Surgeon. We were created with a number of diverse units connected to a central direction node. Our initial purpose was rapid diagnoses and repair of other biological entities. There is no other more knowledgeable medical being on this planet." The thing had drawn much of itself inward inducing a swelling effect, almost as if it were puffing itself up in a proud manner. I almost laughed out loud as an image of the thing performing surgery while tentacle fucking the nurses around it leapt to mind.
"Riiight... I don't quite buy that. If that is true what is with the gourds or flower pods or whatever they are. And what is with all the sexual innuendo?" As I asked the question I looked at the gourd flowers again and reassured myself that there was no way they could not be mistaken for replications of human genitalia.
"They are supposed to be ironic. We found it amusing that humans enjoy the sexual organs of plants so much, literally rubbing your own noses in them, while you hide your own from the world." As it spoke the creature brought a number of the things forward for inspection, turning them about for full views. Some of them were very accurate renderings and I felt myself squirm a bit at the thoughts that ran through my head.
"I am partially human. It is within our genetic coding. We thought it amusing that our sexual organs should be hidden by coverings that resemble often hidden human sexual organs. Is this not ironic and amusing? We sometimes misunderstand irony." The thing said. I couldn't quite tell if it was talking to me, itself or both.
"OK. I almost buy that. But the innuendo?" I asked, not really sure I wanted a full answer.
"Much of observed human conversation seems to revolve around such talk. You are very sexual creatures, but your primary society seems to try to deny this." It raised up two split vines and made an obvious quotation sign as it next spoke. "Your 'polite' social conversation is not supposed to contain vulgarities or sexual references, and yet you find such interesting ways to talk around the subject or about the subject without ever referencing specifics. It is fassscinating. We also use it to gauge receptiveness of a captive human to possible sexual interactions." As it said this it started engaging in apparent sexual acts with its various gourds and I found I could not really look away.
"As said earlier, different emotions and stimulations produce different types of chemical compounds in a body. Some of these can be harvested without killing or injuring the producing creature. We have found, when these are desired, that it is best to have an individual that is receptive to the ideas. Less manipulative compounds are needed to convince them. Sometimes, though rarely, none are needed. This often results in better... tasting compounds." The thing stopped performing lewd acts on itself and its pods turned their attentions back to me. "What is the latest news of the company that created me?"
"Electronic Sentience, they finally perfected the A.I. Though I suppose it could be argued they did that with the bunnies; or you." I considered that for a moment before continuing. "But this is A.I. in the more classically recognized twentieth century sense."
"Oh that is exciting. I imagine some of the algorithms used in our intelligence design were used in creating this new intelligence. Does it have a name?" The Plant asked, shifting subtly forward.
"It named itself. Jan, or something like that. It began with a J I think." I tapped my forehead trying to remember. "They used it to propose repeal on the New Life ban. The military and the other big corporations were highly interested in the electronic A.I. but the public vetoed the plan to repeal the ban. I don't see much difference between the two. If anything the Electronic version strikes me as being the more dangerous of the two."
