A Space Opera - The worst day of his life
#1 of A Space Opera
Allright the legal stuff. yadda yadda yadda 18 or over yadday 21 in places.
This is the first piece of anything I've written in a while, so any and all comments are appreciated.
BEEP BEEP BEEP!!! Vladimir groaned as he was awoken by the soulless claxon that was his alarm clock. He glanced to the blinking LED numerals saw it was 6:30 a.m. and swore, he was going to be late again. He threw off the thin covers and stepped on to the carpet and gave a shudder despite the warming panels that lay underneath. Stretching his wings Vladimir walked to the washroom, lights automatically turning on as he entered the small room. There was space enough to barely fit a shower, a toilet and a sink with a small mirror hanging over it.
Ignoring his morning wood (which he normally would have taken care of in the shower) he went straight to the sink, also ignoring the reflection of a dark brown bat staring back at him with sleep in his eyes, he popped open the medical cabinet and grabbed some toothpaste and his brush. He activated the mirror allowing a small rectangle in the lower left corner to light up and display the day's headlines. The party was increasing military spending after the recent bout of assaults on nearby stations by the Fury of Gaia extremists. "Fucking eco terrorists!" Vlad managed to mumble in between brush strokes. Finished brushing, and with his hard on now flaccid he quickly relieved himself and hurried to get dressed. When he got back home the computer would have made necessary changes to his diet based on his urine sample. Vladimir quickly pulled on some boxers, and hopped into his blue maintenance jumpsuit. Grabbing a quick energy bar and bottle of orange juice on his way out, he prepared himself for the part of waking up he hated the most. Folding his wings over and around his shoulders as a cloak he opened the door, jumped out into the common hallway of his block, and grimaced as his stomach jumped to his throat as he entered the zero G area.
Squinting from the harsh artificial light he half floated, half flapped his way to the grav-well that would take him to street level. As he went out to the handrails that allowed pedestrians to make their way across the station to the mag-train, he looked up to the clear plaziglass ceiling, towering hundreds of meters above him, gazing out to the star covered void and sighed. He was not unhappy on the Leon station, so named for Leon Trotsky. Indeed after democratic Russia had formally returned to the communist ideal around 2045, it had quickly left the U.N. and begun to re-conquer all the countries that had succeeded, it had quickly become a world power once again. The likes of Putin and Medvedev had been harrowed as heroes of the new Communist regime, and as America's economy only withered, Mother Russia only grew, weaning themselves off crude oils through more ecologically friendly, and more importantly cheaper, more efficient means of producing energy. A little over a three hundred and fifty years later, here they were aboard the Leon, one of the largest and most prosperous space colonies in the Horse head nebula. Life was good for him, and yet he could not help feeling unfulfilled. He shook his head of the thoughts, he was doing what he was good at, and he had to put aside his ambitions (whatever they were, for Vladimir himself had little idea) and do his duty to the state.
A familiar voice quickly drew him out of his reverie "Hey Vlad!!" Vladimir's ears swiveled reflexively, though he already knew who it was. He smiled to himself as he turned to greet the wolf jumping up to his level from the artificial gardens below.
"Konstantin, what are you doing up so late? Who's going to cover me from the supervisor now eh?" Vlad joked, gently poking the wolf in the ribs as Konstantin ran up to him.
"Forgotten what day it is, have you Volodya? It's Maslenitsa! Surely she'll forgive you for being a few minutes late."
Vladimir struck his forehead in remembrance. "And you no doubt were stuffing yourself of Blini."
Konstantin only grinned in reply, and though Vlad would never admit it to the wolf, he found him almost painfully attractive. Konstantin was a lean athletic wolf whose winter grey was only just starting to come in with deep yellow eyes. Maybe not the smartest wolf on the station, but still far from stupid, and when he smiled at Vlad, all he could do was smile back.
"What are you staring at me for, come quickly before we miss the train." Konstantin teased, this time poking Vlad in the ribs, and shoving himself ahead in the zero G environ, using the hand rails to pull himself along.
"Hey, wait for me." Vladimir laughed, jumping after him and using his wings to quickly catch up.
They reached the mag-train with seconds to spare; a thoughtful commuter had held open the door open while they raced to get aboard. Nodding their thanks to the feline, they floated to some empty seats and strapped themselves in opposite of each other. Vlad took the opportunity to tear open the packaging on his bar and pop the top on his juice. While he ate he looked out the window as they passed a 24 hour diner. Workers who had just gotten off shift sat and chatted with friends who were just heading to work, night shift - day shift, neither meant much when the station was kept to an artificial noon at all times.
Vlad shifted his gaze back to the handsome wolf sitting across from him. Again he sighed, so absorbed in his own thoughts that Konstantin had to kick his shin to get his attention.
"What!"
"You're not listening to me Vlad. I asked you why you keep staring at me."
"I was just wondering why that even though you've lived on the station your whole life, your fur still changes with planetary seasons." Vlad lied easily; he'd had to learn after he started working with Konstantin. He still recalled when the supervisor had caught him eyeing the wolf from behind. The Parties enforcers had a very stern talking to him about keeping that to himself. "Now come on, this is our stop."
Un-strapping themselves from their seats they floated over to the exits as they opened, letting themselves off at the central hub of the station.
The Station itself was comprised of four parts, two tubular rings circling the main hub, the further ring containing the housing for the proletariat, while the second ring contained most of the shops and services. The central hub itself served as the parties headquarters, their immense skyscraper rising tall, just short of the plaziglass dome, then there was the military headquarters with adjoining barracks, and most of the public services where here. All three areas where linked by the mag-train. Vladimir worked in the fourth section. Located below the central hub was the maintenance area where everything that was required for the stations day to day functioning. Vlad worked there as a general maintenance. In the old days that would have been considered a lowly position, however with the advanced mechanics required for operating anything aboard the colony it took at least a bachelor's degree in mechanics and a minor in physics didn't hurt either. Konstantin worked as a computer technician, also very prestigious in this modern age.
They stepped into the Grav-well and descended in relative silence. Both were hoping that the supervisor wouldn't notice how late they really were. Unfortunately for them, she did.
"And where have you gentlemen been, you are 15 minutes late." It was a short somewhat stocky female fox, in her mid thirties.
"Our apologies Ms. Petrakova, but I-"
Konstantin cut him off there. "We thought seeing as it was Maslenitsa we'd have a quick blini before we came to work, please excuse us supervisor Petrakova."
"Very well, just make sure not to repeat this again, I care not for derelict traditions." She muttered already looking to her clipboard, and walking away, she did however take the time to shoot Vladimir and icy glance.
"Yes Ma'am" They replied in unison.
"Bitch!" muttered Konstantin after she was out of ear shot. "I don't know what she has against you Vlad, but damn does she hate you. No idea why you try to reason with her."
"Yeah." Vladimir replied rather non-committal. Vladimir knew very well why she hated him, the Party wasn't exactly known for being open-minded about homosexuality, and their enforcers had made that painfully clear. And Petrakova was especially ardent in her hatred of him, seeing as she was the one who caught him eyeing Konstantin. "Anyway, I'll see you during the meteor shower tonight right Kostya?"
"Of course, I wouldn't miss it, besides I want you to meet someone."
"You're not going to try and play matchmaker again are you Konstantin. You really should leave that to the spinsters." Vlad joked.
"Ha-ha, trust me Volodya; I've given up on you. You're too damn disagreeable. Anyway, I should really get to work, I'll see you later."
Konstantin waved his goodbye to Vladimir and headed to the computer database and mainframe. He had started to wonder about Vladimir, every woman he had every went out with, he had broken off with. Not that it was any business of his, after all Vlad worked long hours, and few worked as hard as he did, Vlad was practically married to his work. He was the kind of person the Party should promote, Vlad was the poster child of dedication, and yet he was never acknowledged. And there was that time where Konstantin had to take him to the med bay after his appointment with the grunts, the party liked to call police. Vlad had refused to talk about it. But still.... Konstantin just sighed, shrugged his shoulders, hunkered down at the mainframe and began going through the daily system maintenance.
Vlad waved goodbye to Konstantin and headed for his task list for the day. "Let's see what there's to do today hmmm." He mumbled to no one in particular. Today he had to recalibrate the artificial gravity, that would eat up a good two hours, some idiot had messed with the stations heating system, fix the prime ministers servitor, and repair one of the generators. Vladimir sighed; it was going to be a long day.
Vladimir had leaved the Prime Ministers servitor for last, figuring it was of the least importance. He was glad he had, it had proved to be simplest task, a wire had loosened itself from the power cell. Now finished he grabbed his clipboard and checked it off, while the small board uploaded his efficiency report to the Ministry of Labour he quickly checked the time. It was later than he thought it was, though he still had three hours till the shower started. Vlad figured he'd go home, clean himself off, get changed and grab something to eat before heading out. And seeing as he was already at the Party's main office it was a simple matter of catching a mag-train.
Taking the grav-well to his floor he opened the door and deftly landed on his feet as he crossed the threshold and entered a comfortable 0.75 g's. It always made him feel lonely, how empty it seemed, it was always just him, every night it was dinner for one and he rarely had company outside of Konstantin. Once he closed his door he got out of his dirty jumpsuit, and in his boxers headed over to the main computer. Based upon his urine sample it suggested a meal of Shchi with parsley roots, cabbage, and mushrooms, and lamb Pelmeni. He ordered so that it would be ready in about an hour. Vlad forcefully pushed himself out of the chair, grunting with the effort after a hard day's work; he headed into the bathroom, his clawed toes making a small ticking sound against the tile. He started up the shower, putting the hot water on first and adding cold until it was just right. He slipped out of his boxers, and into the shower, tensing momentarily as the hot water broke through his fur to find his skin. Grabbing the liquid soap he applied a generous amount to his hands, and started to work it into a lather throughout his fur. The water actually ran black off of him from all the oil and grit he had accumulated throughout the day. Vladimir always loved that, it gave him a sense of accomplishment. He loved knowing he had worked hard.
Speaking of hard, Vlad looked to his groin, seeing his shaft jutting out, stiff as a board. He shrugged his shoulders, after all he had missed his morning ministrations, why not indulge now. Grabbing the base of his cock with one hand Vladimir squirted out some soap with the other. Using the soap as lube, he gave his phallus quick short strokes, careful not to play with his head to much yet, he liked to save that for just before he came. Pretty soon he was letting his mind wander as it usually did when he masturbated, and as usual his thoughts came to rest on Konstantin. Vlad slowly undressed the wolf in his mind's eye. He started to increase the tempo with which he beat himself off; it wasn't long before his other hand strayed to his testes, rolling the orbs gently between his fingers. In his imagination Konstantin was holding him close, and he was just starting to kneel to take the thick juicy wolf cock into his mouth. He was starting to use fuller strokes now, panting with wild abandon as he slid up and down on his rod with lust. Pretty soon he was sitting on the floor of the shower moaning as Konstantin mentally prepared to ram his rear. Vlad's left hand gave a sharp tug on his balls, eliciting another moan, then traced down his leg to prod and trace his rectum.
He slowly started to shove his index finger in, using only the water as lube, he liked a rough entry. Pretty soon he was using two fingers to pound his hole in time to his mental fuck fest. Before he knew it he was moaning and panting nonstop, his fingers pushing deeper into him as he got closer to climax, he started to pound his meat uncontrollably, stimulating the full shaft, as well as the head. He had lost any sense of rhythm as he just stroked and shoved his way closer to the edge. Then with a loud groan, he could hold it back no longer and shot his seed out, slowing down on his shaft but not stopping until it had stopped twitching and oozing ejaculate. He sat in the shower a few moments longer, regaining his breath and letting his heart settle. Getting up proved to be a bit of a challenge, his orgasm had left his legs weak, but he made it up eventually, licked his hand clean of cum, and washed the rest of the sperm from his body.
Vlad had made extra sure to wash his hands well before dinner. He put on a fresh pair of drawers and threw his dirty clothes into the hamper. Feeling much more refreshed after his release and shower, he choose dark jeans, and plain black tee-shirt to wear. Even after a hundred and fifty years, fashion hadn't changed much. Stretching the kinks from his wings he took a seat as the computer finished preparing his meal. Opening the book he had been reading, he decided to finish the chapter in The Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell, by a Aldous Huxley. The book was restricted, but literature was the one thing he would by from smugglers that showed up at the station once every now and then. Besides, the philosophy surrounding hallucinogenic's had always interested him, especially ones from a historic perspective. He would even be interested in trying some of the psycho-actives, but not even smugglers where stupid enough to try that. Besides many of the drugs needed to be smoked, and in the stations oxygen enriched air, that would be a fatal mistake. With his supper just arrived, he placed his book mark back in and set it aside for later. Vlad was running out of time, so he ate quickly, put on a light jacket and headed out; grimacing as he crossed the threshold into zero G for the second time that day.
Konstantin sighed; she always took so long to get ready.
"Come on we're going to be late."
"You're one to talk, you didn't even tell him where to meet us, or even where for that matter."
"Yeah but you're the one who wanted to meet him, and I told you he's not that great with people." Konstantin retorted.
"Alright, alright, I'm ready okay."
It was the only time the station ever went dark. Every few years a meteor storm would come by, and the military would set up a few Lancer turrets to dispose of any that came to close to the station. The Party had made a sort of Holiday out of it. Many people where already out, looking for good views.
Vladimir ignored them and headed for the Arboretum, it was where he and Konstantin had always gone for the shower. The air was on the cool side, another of the Party's ideas; something about establishing a mood. He hopped from the handrails, to the lower level which constituted the gardens. Using his wings to navigate he landed on a tree with relative ease. It was his usual spot, expecting Konstantin to have little trouble finding him; he took a seat and latched on with the feet, digging in his claws so he wouldn't drift off.
"I'm telling you he'll be here. He always is." Konstantin's voice came, drifting from farther down.
"And I'm telling you if you would have told me I'd be hopping from tree to tree in the arboretum, I would have dressed more appropriately." Came a more feminine voice
Vladimir could hear Konstantin sigh all the way from his perch.
It wasn't long till they came in view, jumping from tree to tree till they made it to the clearing where Vlad was perched. Flapping his way down from his tree he greeted Konstantin leaving the introduction up to his freind. "I thought you were going to be late Konstantin."
"Ha! I told you Vlad, I'd never miss this. Oh by the way Vlad this is Tatyana Nikolai, Tatyana - Vladimir Karakov, my oldest friend."
"A pleasure to meet you miss Nikolai." Vlad bowed, Now that Vlad could see her up close, he realized she was quite striking, a wolf like Konstantin, she was a duskier colour then him with ice blue eyes.
She giggled, "Please, call me Tanya, Konstantin has told me much about you."
"Really, you must excuse me but I don't recall him giving mention of you, and I have not seen you on the station, are you new here?"
"Um.. no I work as a secretary for general Vyascheslav, my quarters are in the Main Hub and I start later in the day" she explained blushing before she turned on Konstantin, obviously angry. "You mean to tell me you HAVEN'T TOLD HIM YET!!!"
Konstantin backed up a bit and scratched the back of his neck nervously thinking of what to say to placate her. "I was planning on telling him tonight, I swear it."
Vladimir's ears perked up reflexively, now his suspicion was aroused and he had a feeling it was wasn't good news. At least for him.
"What were you going to tell me Kostya?"
"Well you see" The wolf stumbled. "Tanya and I are kind of engaged." Vlad could swear his heart stopped beating for a moment. "And I was wondering if you'd be my umm..... best man."
Vlad was stunned. The man he had pined over for years was getting married and worse yet, he couldn't think of a response. "..... Uh..." Vlad shook his head and snapped out of it, trying to burying his personal feelings and salvage the situation. "How could I say no Kons -" He managed to stumble before Tanya launched herself at Vlad, trapping him in an embrace.
"OH THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Konstantincouldthinkofnooneelsetobehisbestman andwecouldn'tverywellhaveaceremonywithoutone." Vlad guessed that they really had no one else to turn to. Thankfully she stopped to take a breath and slowed her speech down abit. "And I'm sorry for such short notice; Kostya was so worried about asking you he kept putting it off."
"Uhh... not at all, please." Vlad was able to get out. Interaction with others always put him off balance, luckily he was saved by the meteor shower, and by Konstantin.
"Oh, look at that dear, the showers started, why don't you go find a better vantage point and I'll catch up with you later. I just need to talk to Vlad for a minute."
She gave Konstantin a quizical look, however she must have decided against questioning him. She gave a little nod to Vlad, mouthed thank you one more and took off.
Once she was out of ear shot, Konstantin came within whispering distance. He looked a little disappointed, and Vladimir couldn't blame him.
"Vlad, what was all that about?"
"I don't know what you're talking of Kostya." Vlad lied. He was sure Konstantin could see through it though, a second later and he was confirmed.
"You're a terrible liar Vlad, and you've been lying a lot lately." Oh god, Konstantin knew. "I think we need to talk."
Vlad was starting to break into a nervous sweat. " What's there to talk about, Kostya, I'm happy for you truely." And he surprised even himself because he meant it. He may be bitter, but he would repress that at least for his best friend.
"You didn't look it, I've known you for years Vlad, I know you better than that."
"Konstantin, you want me to be your best man, and I've never met you're girlfreind, never even knew you even had one. You just caught me off gaurd is all."
"Vlad, you're hiding something, I'd hope you'd trust in me and our freindship is enough to tell me. However, I have a evening planned with Tanya for the night. We will, I repeat, We WILL talk tomorrow Vlad." And without waiting for a reply Konstantin floated after his fiance, leaving those final words hanging like a threat.
Not if I can help it. Vlad thought silently to himself. Once Konstantin was gone, he opened the bottle of vodka he had been planning to share. Instead he took a deep swig, and as he looked up to the meteor shower he felt well and truly alone.
