Angel growled with frustration as she tried to hold the bright blue and green wrapping paper down around a cardboard container slightly larger than a shoebox. The festive paper wasn't to curl back up and she was having trouble getting the tape to stick. The six-foot-seven sauropod eventually gave up and simply wrapped a long piece of clear tape around the entire package, ending with the cardboard inside more or less covered.
Angel was a boxer. Her height and reach gave her a large advantage in the ring. It didn't hurt that her smooth, broad skull and pointy teeth were more than a little intimidating as well. Golden eyes peered out from under a heavy brow. Red triangles ran down her backside, no more than a few inches wide at the top and spreading larger as they traveled over her spine and tail. They contrasted with her tough gray-brown skin nicely. Each triangle pointed downwards, each angle a perfect 60 degrees. Lighter white skin ran from under her chin, over the front of her neck, and spread over her chest and belly before narrowing near her groin.
Dressed as she was in black, baggy shorts and a tight-fitting black sports bra, she was exposing as much skin as she normally did at the gym where she worked out and sparred with other boxers.
The big dinosaur wasn't one to mess around with fine details like wrapping a Christmas present. Besides, she was hoping to see the receiver of the gift put them on right away anyways. It took Angel a few weeks to find the gloves, but it was worth it - they were perfect. The boxing gloves were springtime green with black wrists. Each glove had, right at the top where the glove would be hitting someone, a white, ten-point star.
Angel stood and picked up the poorly-wrapped gift from the bench near the boxing ring at the center of the gym. It was early in the day yet, so she got into the ring, leaving the present in one corner, and danced in circles, shifting her feet, punching the air, dodging imaginary blows. She loved to box and easily lost herself in the faux-fight, until she heard a voice call her name.
"Angel! Hey!"
The large dino stopped and leaned her elbows on the ropes as she smiled at Green Legend. The white-furred bunny was nearly as tall as she was. At least, if you counted her tall, flopped over ears, which Green always did. The rabbit approached the ring, dressed in her regular boxing uniform. She wore a light green sports bra and matching shorts. She also had a many-pointed star over her left eye, the same color as her boxing shorts. One cup of the bra had a circular patch of black, flat on the upper side, which extended over the side of her chest. Her green shorts had a stylized black flame on the left leg, outlined in white. She was fit, with a hard belly that showed off every muscle, even through her thick, soft pelt. She had long blonde hair draping down the sides of her short muzzle, going just past her shoulders. The ends were tipped with red, giving it the appearance of fire as she tossed it back and waved at Angel.
"Green! Just the person I was hoping to see," Angel said. Her tail swept the mat behind her lazily and she nodded towards the gift. "Got you your Christmas present early. Didn't want to wait."
Green laughed and ran over to lift the present. She raised an eyebrow at the crumpled wrapping paper, but didn't say anything, for which Angel was grateful. The rabbit tore into the box inside and pulled out the boxing gloves, a look of rapt adoration on her white-furred face.
"Oh, Angel! They're perfect!" she said, clutching them to her chest. "Wow!"
"Thought you'd like 'em," she said.
"But I didn't get you anything."
"S'okay," the dino said, shrugging. "Tell you what - be my sparring partner today and we'll call it even. Help you break in those gloves."
Angel nodded and hopped into the ring. Both boxers put on their gloves - Angel's were the same red color as the triangles on her backside. They couldn't tape them as tightly as if they were fighting for real without third-party assistance, but for sparring, it was good enough.
They bumped fists in the middle of the ring.
"Gonna kick your ass today, bunny," Angel said, flashing a grin that revealed every one of her many sharp teeth.
"You say that every time," Green shot back, dancing backwards, gloves up. "And every time I prove you wrong."
"I'm feeling good today," the dino said, retreating to her corner as well, keeping a wary eye on the bunny. "You wait and see."
They rushed back to the center at the same time and circled each other. Neither wore shoes, preferring their feet bare. The canvas trembled beneath them as they held their gloves up, protecting their faces, until Angel ducked, jumped forward, and went for an early uppercut. Green leaned backward, narrowly avoiding a nasty shot to the jaw, and tried to retaliate. Angel blocked the first punch, but took the second to her belly. She let out an "oof!" as she turned into the blow.
The dino's long tail swept around, catching one of Green's ankles. The white rabbit stumbled and Angel rushed in, raining a string of blows, several of which connected solidly around the white rabbit's belly and chest. One landed a hit on her nose, stunning her for just a moment. Green shrugged off a few more glancing blows and struck back half-blind, eyes watering. The white star on the end of her green glove connected and Angel grunted as she dropped back, gloves up.
Green sniffed and wriggled her pink nose. "Shoulda worn my mouth guard," she grumbled, opening and closing her jaw a few times.
"You're looking a little rusty there, Green," Angel said, taunting her sparring partner. "Slowing down a bit, are we?"
"Ha! Least I don't need the temperature at 80 to fight," Green shot back.
The two females growled at each other and circled again, toes dancing back and forth as they looked for an opening. They traded blows here and there, but for a few minutes, neither went for it.
Until Green saw her chance. She feinted a left hook and, when Angel took the bait, she swung in her right glove, catching the dino under the jaw. Dazed, Angel stumbled back, trying to get her gloves back up as the bunny's lightning-fast punches rained down around her head and shoulders. She got a few good body shots in before trying to swing her tail around, but this time, Angel was ready. The rabbit hopped into the air, putting her great leg strength to good work, and as she landed, brought her fist down on top of the bridge of Angel's muzzle.
The sauropod's jaw clacked together and a stream of blood poured from her right nostril. Growling, she ignored the wooziness and swung out, jabbing left, right, and left again. She caught Green a solid shot to the jaw and another to the temple, but the rabbit swung right back. Angel tried to block, but the pesky lapine girl was simply too quick.
The next thing Angel knew, she was on her back, staring up at the lights, arms at her sides, with a throbbing pain in her jaw and temple. Green stepped over her belly and straddled her chest, both white stars on the ends of the gloves pointing right at Angel's snout.
"Ha! Another victory for the mammals!" she shouted, glee evident on her face.
"That friggin' right hook of yours," Angel said, reaching up to rub her swollen jaw with her glove.
Green reached down and helped the larger female up to her feet. "Hey, don't feel bad. It was a good fight." She opened and closed her jaw a few more times. "You got a few good hits in there. Damn... feels like I got hit by a truck..."
Angel laughed and threw her arm around the rabbit's shoulder.
"Least I gave as good as I got, right?"
"S'right! These gloves are great, by the way. Thanks again!"
Angel's teeth clicked as she grinned and wiped her bloody nose on her free arm.
"Oh, don't think we're done already, bunny! Those gloves aren't going to save you in round two!"
