Here's a story I wrote last year featuring Khalil Dasar. It details one of the fennec's many adventures during his travels as a wandering Auran Sage, and a dilemma common to many Sages who want to help those in need without getting kicked out of the kingdoms they visit.

Travel Journal of Khalil Dasar, entry 332: The Rose Petal

23rd day in the month of Kasara--

I thought it was supposed to be the rainy season in this part of the world...

Contrary to many people I've met around here, I enjoy rainfall. I'm a fennec fox, born and raised in the desert. Rain is often a unique relief for my community. Here, however, I was far from home and parched from my journey. The cloud cover overhead was thick, as if night had fallen earlier than normal, but the ground remained dry. Not a single drop of rain fell, the sky taunting the people begging for it here. I arrived in the town of Saama and was welcomed only with a hazy glow as loose dust spread the light from its multitude of torches along the streets. I'd been traveling since dawn and my food rations were depleted, so by this time I was starving.

I trudged through dry dirt roads following the unmistakable smell of cooking food further in. As I walked, I noticed the town was rather run-down. Many buildings appeared to be abandoned, yet there was no shortage of people milling about. They all seemed lost in the miasma overtaking the city, making me wonder if the droughts I'd heard about had reached this far westward. The prospect of rain overhead didn't add any cheer to the air, and even the multitude of beggars along the streets had given up asking for money. Though I wanted to help, I wasn't sure what one could do to lift the spirits of an entire town so downcast. It was heartbreaking to watch.

Soon, I found a line of vendor stalls where people had gathered for food. I wrapped my cloak tighter to keep pickpockets away and joined in. In spite of my hunger, I tried to keep myself calm. I only had enough money left to carry me to Dimarsis and couldn't afford to let impulsiveness force the coins from my pouch. I wondered about the prospect of buying food for some of the beggars around, but upon hearing the prices the vendors demanded, I realized I'd go bankrupt before buying enough to feed a fraction of the poor people here.

Upon reaching the vendor himself, I noticed the food available was minimal and of dismal quality. I settled on a helping of grilled waterfowl and hoped it tasted better than it looked.

As I waited for my food, I overheard a unique voice out of the rest of the crowd, "But I'm starving! Please, just something from these stalls."

Another voice responded, this one rough, as if the speaker had been gargling rocks, "No! We'll give you something when we arrive. It's only a few miles' walk."

Then the first again--I realized it was a young female, "Let me have something from here. I promise I won't run."

The other grumbled, "Fine! Make it quick!"

A large, imposing figure shoved his way through the crowd and stood next to me at the vendor's stall. He was an eland, a towering bovine whose muscle bulged from his trimmed leather clothing (which seemed far more ornate than expected in a town like this). Twin spiraled horns were like daggers protruding from his head, ready to disembowel the first person to look at him funny.

His companion, or at least someone I thought was his companion, was much smaller. Judging by her scent, I could tell she was feline. A cloak and hood shrouded her appearance, but in the yellow lamplight of the vendor's stall, I noticed the sparkle of jewelry within her clothing's shadows. I sensed a degree of melancholy weariness in the way she stood, leaning on the counter as if reluctant, maybe even fearful, of standing up straight. I braved a glance toward her and saw deep sadness in her eyes, cast down like a bird robbed of her wings. I then noticed something else in those blue sapphires. She was staring directly at a carving knife.

The cat took a quick glance at the eland, then reached for the knife. I grabbed her wrist, trying to be gentle, and whispered, "Whatever the reason, it's not worth it..."

She stared back at me in muted surprise, then the eland took notice and lashed out, jamming his own knife onto the table, "Hand's off!"

I jerked back, gulping, "M-my apologies. I merely tried to--"

"If you want her, you can pay the same price everyone else will." The eland's scowl turned to a grin, "It's her first night. Stop by in a few hours... You might be lucky enough to break her in when she starts."

My eyes widened in shock. I glanced at the cat and realized the iron collar around her neck. She was a slave. Dreading the answer I'd already assumed, I muttered, "First night where?"

The cat trembled as the eland nodded toward pink-tinted glows across town, "The Rose Petal. Saama's first and only brothel, headed by the glorious Melindra-nara herself!"

I couldn't believe it... This region actually allowed sex slavery to exist within its boundaries? The eland took the cat by her shoulder to lead her away. She gave me a pleading stare before turning. I stood there gawking as they walked off, having completely lost my appetite.

I tossed my untouched food into the first beggar's bowl I found and hurried across town while my mind struggled to come up with some idea of how to spare that young lady from life in a house of ill repute. Judging by the marks and tassels I'd seen on the town's boundary posts, I knew there had to be an Auran monastery here.

Sure enough, I found the walls surrounding the enclave and tugged my necklace from my outer cloak to show the gate-watcher. To most, it appeared to be a piece of silver jewelry, but the blue gemstone of its pendant glowed in my hand, proving my status as an Auran Sage.

Beyond the gate, a circle of cottages surrounded a towering central building whose windows revealed lights and movement inside. Upon entering, a black-furred wolf rose from a table and greeted me.

We exchanged the usual pleasantries, as I didn't want to sound rude by bringing up the dire situation of the town. I figured the Sages here were already well aware. The wolf had one of the other caretakers bring my gear to a spare room for the night. It was common for Sages like myself to stay at places like this instead of an inn due to the safety and camaraderie offered to like-minded individuals. Though Auran Sages all differed in appearance and even spirituality, we shared the same Aura and honor code.

The wolf was named Santo and was the head caretaker of the monastery. He bid me rest near the hall's fireplace, sensing that something was troubling me.

I gazed into the flames and retold my encounter with the eland and the feline slave girl. I wanted advice here, or at least some reassurance that my fears about her fate were exaggerated. Unfortunately, Santo's weary expression revealed this was more common than I expected. The town of Saama was falling apart.

The ebony wolf let out a long, sorrowful sigh, "Shameful as it may be, that brothel is probably the one thing keeping this town alive. The soil has turned poor over the last few harvests and rivers are drying up. Our enclave has tried to help the best we could but the town continues to beg while resources dwindle. The only constant source of income is from those seeking the Rose Petal's prostitutes. It is a situation that lady Melindra-nara has shrewdly taken advantage of. She has even donated money and... services to the town's high courts, cementing her popularity with those running the region."

My ears fell, "But what of the slaves forced to work there?"

Santo shook his head, "Indentured servitude has produced them, due to families being unable to pay for their debts. They need to keep themselves fed and their own businesses going in lack of good farming conditions, and the only place that can provide that wealth at this time is that brothel. Many have no choice but to offer sons and daughters, once they come of age, in exchange for that."

I stood up and paced, feeling deep pity, "Surely something can be done..."

"I am afraid what they are doing is perfectly legal here. Even we Sages must abide by that. To interfere could rupture what's left of Saama. Furthermore, Melindra-nara has broken no laws. She is under our protection, regardless of our opinions."

I glanced away in stubbornness. Santo approached, putting a warm hand on my shoulder, "Let it go, Khalil. Given enough time, this town can recover. For now, however, its citizens must endure this trial."

My brow furrowed, "What about those forced to endure it against their will? What did they do to deserve that?"

"Such is life, my friend."

My ears flattened, "The very idea of sex slavery sickens me. To think that someone must be forced, day by day, to allow others to take advantage of them..." My voice trailed off as I occupied my mind of ways to help that feline, if nobody else would.

Santo calmly replied, "I understand your feelings, but not even the Sages are able to circumvent the law. Our battles are against those who abuse the law. Whatever it is you're thinking of trying, please remember that."

"But laws change throughout every region! The Sages don't. We have our code of honor and it's universal."

"True, but that doesn't change the fact we also pledged to uphold the laws of the regions we settle in."

I lifted an eyebrow, "Even unjust laws?"

"What is unjust about requiring the repayment of a debt?"

"But... what right do they have to offer their own children? Once they come of age, don't they have any say on whether or not they are sold?"

"These were the terms the families agreed to."

I sighed through grit teeth, frustrated, then turned and left. Santo called back after me, "Do not act in haste, Khalil!"

I waved back, "I will not break the code."

I went to my chambers and stowed anything designating me an Auran Sage. Since most Sages traveled wearing ornate tribal garments, this didn't leave much else for me to walk around town with, though I did find some ordinary robes and cloaks I could use, primarily one with a hood large enough to hide my big fennec ears. I also had to leave behind my sword. I hesitated at that, realizing that Sages were never to part with their weapons. The special Verrocite crystals that made up their unique construction were not only enhancers for battle, but also symbols of the bond between a Sage and the Aurorae, who have granted us our power.

Then again, the Aurorae had charged us with the protection of innocent life, above all else. I was certain that temporarily going without something as conspicuous as a large sickle sword would not deter this mission. I did need a weapon of some sort, however, and chose a dagger I could easily conceal in my belt. The only item I kept was my necklace. It was a gift from my mentor, Sarabi, as a memento for my journey. Its pendant contained a sparkling blue jewel of Verrocite that she'd forged herself, framed by silver in the shape of her heraldic symbol to show others I was once her acolyte. It was one-of-a-kind, and due to the memories of lessons learned when she trained me, this item was something I didn't want to part with.

I bundled up the best I could and left for town, heading straight to the red light district. I didn't know how I was to rescue this girl, but time was short here. I would think of something on the way.

Unfortunately, nervousness prevented any rational plan from forming in my mind. I couldn't believe I was actually entering this place on my own free will. Something the "servants" there should have had the luxury of, as well.

My heart pounded in my chest as I looked around, noticing the people walking through these streets. Many were here in hopes of forgetting their horrid lives if only for a single night, while others simply looked for a good time in a town where all other options had left with its cash flow. I also discovered a number of soldiers here and there. It made me wonder if this was common for regional militias.

I followed the scent of the eland through narrow streets and soon arrived at the Rose Petal itself. It was a brilliant contrast to the rest of the area. Surrounded by dull, dilapidated buildings, this large, two-story structure was lit up with a number of lanterns. A couple of muscled guards walked about, ready to threaten anyone hoping to "window shop" while the windows themselves displayed some of the girls, and even a few guys, waiting for someone to take notice of them. I didn't see the feline and shuddered at the thought someone might have taken her already, but then decided I had to make sure. I took a gulp and made my way forward, realizing my tail had been tucked firmly between my own legs as I'd walked here.

At the forefront was that hulking eland. He stepped up and blocked my path, looking down at me with an intimidating stare as lantern light reflected off his spiraled horns, "Lookin' for a good time, pretty boy?"

I pulled out my money pouch and gave it a shake to prove it was full. The towering bouncer grinned, "Follow me..."

I swallowed hard and followed without a single word, trying to force my tail from tucking under again. No turning back now.

Upon stepping inside, a wave of unique smells filled my nostrils. Perfume and incense wafted all about, nearly drowning out any other scents. And the pheromones were intoxicating! I could barely even think as the aroma of lust dared me to forget this mission and enjoy the night. After all... how often would I have a chance to do this in such an opulent place? I couldn't help but breathe in more, craving it like an addict on opium.

A grand scarlet hue bathed the entire place. Golden upper-level walkways converged in a regal staircase at the far end, while the walls were lined with plush, velvet couches occupied by a multitude of men and women. My own heart skipped upon noticing some of the ladies here. They were absolutely gorgeous! In spite of my opinions about such an occupation, I found it impossible to deny their appeal. The pheromones emanating from their fur made my whiskers twitch in anticipation.

A multitude of species walked all around me as I followed the eland inside. Many of the girls, upon noticing my entrance, gave a wink or a cute smile in hopes of catching my exclusive attention. A flirty skunk, a sultry mouse, a petite gazelle, a cute rabbit... an entire menagerie of women whose goals were the pleasure of men.

I had to pause and let out a breath, if only to center myself. I forced from my mind the distractions I knew were begging for my consideration. I reminded myself they were also here for money, and some may still have been forced here. I had to maintain focus. This wasn't for me, it was for them. For that feline girl. The image of her frightened face appeared in my mind and shattered my desire for arousal. I silently cursed at myself for nearly falling for such titillation.

"Welcome!"

My ears perked at a voice calling out from a staircase at the far end. A sable lady descended wearing a dress tailored to hug every pleasant curve on her body, and was transparent enough to leave little to the imagination whenever she passed a lamp. Her tall, musteline form swayed with every step. Long, lustrous hair shined like a waterfall flowing down her shoulders, and those eyes froze me in my tracks like prey.

I gulped in reflex as she approached, smiling as warmly as if she were welcoming a lover back home, "I'd hoped you would stop by to visit."

My ears flattened in shock, "Wha... huh?"

The sable chuckled and tapped my chin, closing my gaping mouth, "Tarsus here mentioned how a handsome little fennec took a liking to one of our newest additions."

I blinked, realizing I could smell the feline's scent on the sable, "Are you... Melindra-nara?"

The sable turned and regarded the rest of the building, "Indeed I am! Mistress of the Rose Petal, and lady of Saama's warm night." She spun back to face me, "I have catered to every noble in this town, providing the elite with the resources to keep it running in spite of the current difficulties. The accommodations I maintain for the public ensure that while food may be scarce, the need for comfort shall never go unquenched." With a sly grin, she added, "For a price, of course... So tell me, what would bring an Auran Sage to indulge in our services?"

I took a step back on impulse and bumped into the eland, still standing behind me like a monolith. "Uh... who told you I was a Sage?"

The eland chuckled, "I did. You people are easy to pick out in a crowd thanks to that gaudy sense of tribal fashion."

Melindra approached, "Now now, Tarsus... I'm sure he's not like those from the monastery." She glanced down at me and continued, "Neither your species nor your scent are from around here. I assume you're looking for someone to keep you warm after long months of travelling alone?"

I nodded, "I-I noticed the feline..."

"Ah! Yes, Karina. Tonight shall be her debut here at the Rose Petal."

I stood straighter and asked, "She seemed a bit... different from the usual women I see here. Is she, um... worried about her first night?"

Melindra bid me toward a nearby couch. "Most are, when they are not prepared for such a life. I can tell you seem concerned about her."

I quickly nodded, hoping to find a better answer than my fear she was a slave.

The sable continued, "Her family has worked up quite a bit of debt, so she is here to pay it off, as this is the only reliable way to earn money in this town until the next harvest."

I tried to maintain an expression of simple curiosity, but deep down, I knew it was worse than that. The look in that cat's eyes, her attempt to grab that knife... It all told much more than what Melindra was letting on. I tilted my head and asked, "How much does her family owe?"

"I cannot go into specifics, but I can faithfully say it would be no more than three years' worth of living expenses."

I blinked, "That much? How is that even possible?"

"Her father is a gambler. But enough about that. I'm sure you've come to support her, yes? All money she earns goes toward repayment, of course."

Something still didn't feel right about this, but I knew I couldn't prod further without seeing Karina herself. My pulse started beating faster as I realized that meant I would have to pay for her services. "How much for the night?"

Melindra-nara grinned, knowing she found a new customer, "She entered our ranks days after coming of age, and as such is completely unspoiled. The chance to claim her maidenhood carries a premium--six-hundred in advance."

My heart sank like a stone in water. I pulled out my money pouch in the feeblest of motions, "I... I only have about three-hundred eighty-nine."

"Then choose someone else. There are many other fine women in my employ."

"But... she's the only one I had my eye on."

"Oh? Then how do you expect to pay for her?"

My mind raced for a solution, but once again my nervousness froze me solid, especially in the presence of a socially-powerful individual like Melindra. I tapped my belt, "I have a dagger that might be worth enough to cover the rest. The hilt is laced with gold."

Melindra's expression soured, "We do not accept trades, fennec."

I felt a hand on my shoulder and jolted, then Tarsus's voice boomed, "...unless you wanna 'trade' yourself."

I glanced up and saw the malicious grin on the eland's face, "What?"

Melindra sighed, "Tarsus, we will not discuss this again. No more soliciting customers."

Tarsus grumbled and stepped back. I saw how he was looking at me and realized I might've gotten his attention in a way I didn't really want. I turned back to Melindra and noticed her eyeing my chest. My necklace was dangling out.

The sable's eyes widened, "We do take gemstones, however..."

I clutched the pendant, "That's not for sale. It's sentimental."

Melindra gave a sly smile, "Too bad. Such an item would certainly cover Karina's price and leave you with enough money for breakfast in the morning."

I glanced away, ears blushing as I recalled I still hadn't eaten since noon. Was this the only way?

Melindra added, "How much is she worth to you, Sage?"

My emotions clashed. I desperately wanted to help Karina, but in the process I might lose a keepsake that's constantly reminded me why I'm an Auran Sage. In the end, however, I figured that my memories of Sarabi were what mattered. Not a jewel.

Even though it was hand-crafted specifically for me...

I let out a defeated sigh and pulled the necklace off. Melindra-nara held out her hand in anticipation, smiling wider. I held the item for a moment, asking myself if I truly wanted to give this up for a stranger, then let my hand fall and the leave the jewelry in Melindra's hand.

The sable stood and chuckled, "Excellent! Karina is yours to do as you please. Do show her a good time, won't you?"

I got to my feet, clutching the arm of the couch for balance. I had just given up a personal gift presented in love for the services of a prostitute. Albeit one forced against her will, that I intended to rescue. As I followed Melindra upstairs, I asked, "Are the rooms here soundproof?"

The sable glanced over her shoulder, "You have those humongous ears... Do you hear any moans or screaming?"

I looked away in uneasiness, "No..."

When we reached the top, I followed her across a long balcony overlooking the ground floor until we reached a room marked with an amber lamp. Melindra doused the light and unlocked the door, "She has been reluctant and may not be completely broken. If you would like us to come in and restrain her, just let us know."

I halted an expression of disdainful shock and merely nodded. Melindra opened the door to bid me in. Inside was a lavishly-decorated room with colors matching the amber-and-scarlet motif of the main floor. Kneeling on a bed was the feline herself, Karina. Pure white fur reflected the room's lamplight while gold jewelry sparkled, accenting a silk outfit that left most of her body exposed. As her back was facing us, I noticed she was trying to stop herself from trembling. My ears fell in deep pity.

Melindra-nara yelled, "Karina! Compose yourself and turn around!"

As the feline did so, I noticed hastily-dried tear trails in her fur. She didn't deserve this.

Melindra continued, "This is your life now. Make the most of it."

I spoke up before the sable could say more, "I think I can handle her..."

Melindra nodded and left, closing the door.

Karina and I locked eyes in a tense moment. Neither of us was sure what to do first. The feline tilted her head, "You're that Sage from the market, aren't you?"

I nodded quietly.

She shuddered, clasping a shoulder, "Just... please be gentle."

I let out a sigh, "You can relax. I will not touch you."

Karina blinked, "What? But... you paid for a night, didn't you?"

I mustered all the courage I could, hoping to sound like I had the situation under control, "What I paid for was a night of safety from anyone who might take advantage of you."

The feline stared at me. I expected a relieved expression to appear on her face, but instead, she scowled and hissed, "You... you halfwit!"

My jaw dropped, "Huh?"

"Do you have any idea what you're doing?" She straightened up, "I was brought here against my will, trying all day to prepare myself for the fact I'd be violated on a constant basis, and you come in here trying to make it seem like everything's gonna be all right?" She trembled again as tears streamed from her eyes, "They've taken everything from me, fennec. My home, my dignity... and now I have to wait for them to steal my virtue, as well?" Muffled sobs escaped her quivering lips, "I... I don't want this. I wanna go home!"

I stood there, dumbfounded and heartbroken as she lay there crying her heart out. I wanted so desperately to help her, to make her feel better, but had no clue what to say now. I stepped forward but halted. In spite of the reaction to put a warm, comforting hand on her back, I knew that being touched by a stranger, even one with innocent intentions, was likely the last thing she wanted in this situation. I had to keep my distance for now.

I unwittingly reached up and placed my hand to my chest, then realized that Sarabi's necklace was no longer there. Clutching it when troubled was a reflex I had in the past. Now, however, I felt almost as unclad as she did. Then my ears propped forward. I was a Sage. What would Sarabi think of me if I just stood here staring all night?

I unclasped my cloak and held it out, "At the very least, I can help you feel better tonight, Karina. My name is Khalil Dasar."

Karina paused, stifling her sobs, and looked over at my cloak.

I added, "I've been trained to read body language. Maybe this will help you feel less exposed."

The cat ran a paw through her short hair then reached out and took it, wrapping it around herself, "Look, I know you're trying to help, but one night won't do much in the long run." Her whiskers twitched, "Wait... you're a Sage. Are you here to free me?"

I shook my head, walking to the nearby window. The glass panes were little more than vertical slits, allowing outside light to enter but refusing an escape attempt. "I'm afraid there's not much I can do for now, short of breaking the law." I snorted in frustration, "It's ironic... Auran Sages are given dominion over the elements, but I'm powerless here due to a stupid legal loophole."

I turned back to Karina to find her head tilted in wonder. "You have this power, but you restrain yourself against a law that can be abused?"

"Believe me, I've considered the possibility of freeing you by force, but the Sages in this town already have a bad rap judging by Melindra's comments. I don't want to make it worse." I glanced away, "Plus, there are a lot of off-duty soldiers down there. Even a Sage wouldn't be able to take on so many at once."

Karina let out a sigh, "Melindra owns them. She owns the town itself. There's hardly anyone that doesn't owe her a debt."

I raised an eyebrow, "Doesn't that seem a little suspicious?"

"Yes, but what can we do? No proof can be found that this isn't simply a matter of the drought. I was there when I saw my father speaking with her over matters of grain supply from our farm." The feline looked down, grimacing, "I hate him... He gambles away what money we have left... and mom never stopped him. She was too depressed to do anything other than mope around. She hardly batted an eye when Tarsus came to take me away!" She curled up, hugging her knees, "I hate them both for forcing me into this. What kinds of parents do that?" She grit her teeth in anger, "When the debts are paid and I'm free... I'm not even going back. If they don't care enough about me to save me from a whorehouse, then they won't care when I come back after being used by everyone in town."

My ears shifted to the side, "Look, I understand your resentment, but do you really want to harbor that kind of hatred for so long?"

The looked up at me, "What would you do?"

I paused in thought, then gave a wry grin, "Y'know... If my family betrayed me like that... I dunno. I'd probably return to them for one day and tell them how you just told me you feel about them, then walk out of their sight with no intention of ever going back."

For the first time since I'd seen her, she actually smirked, "I figured as much. At least you're not like those holier-than-thou types at the monastery."

"Aw c'mon, they aren't that bad... They tried everything they could to help this town."

Karina's smirk disappeared and her face turned downcast, "They didn't do a very good job, then... I've actually heard rumors that they're hoarding the donations people had given. Those who wanted help from these 'noble' Aurans got nothing more than a bunch of frightened monks who won't lift a finger to break the so-called laws that violate the people they're supposed to protect."

I walked over to the bed and sat down without getting too close, "I'll investigate that after tonight, but for now, let's just focus on your situation. We'll figure something out. I promise."

After a few moments of silence, the feline spoke up, "So you say Aurans can control the elements... What element do you control?"

I lifted my paw toward some nearby candles. The tiny flames flickered and spiraled, then snuffed out. "I can manipulate air pressure and direct the winds around me."

Karina tilted her head, "That's it?"

"It can be a lot more powerful than you'd think. Ever seen a typhoon?"

"So... what's stopping you from using it to blow Melindra and everyone away?"

I shook my head, "That won't stop all this. It'll just turn more people against us Aurans, and once we're driven out, the slavery will continue." I leaned back, "Melindra-nara has too big of a reputation here. If we can bring that down, her 'power' will disappear."

"How do you expect to do that?"

"Perhaps we can first remove her influence, maybe turn her bouncers. I know you've only been here a short while, but what do you know of that Tarsus guy?"

"He's a hedonist and a sadist. Plus, I got the impression he's more attracted to men than women."

I narrowed my eyes, thinking back to how the eland reacted around me, "That makes sense... What about his temper?"

"He doesn't take insults too well. He once kicked another bouncer just because he made fun of his horns."

A smile formed on my face, "And can he hold his alcohol?"

Karina smirked, "I doubt it. I've only seen him drink once, and that was just minutes before he made that kick." Her smirk faded, "What are you planning?"

"I could goad him to attacking me and get into a bartering position. If this whole ordeal is about business, then I could turn Tarsus's anger management problem into a liability."

"Do you really think that'll work?"

"It's all I have off the top of my head."

Karina sighed and sat back, "I dunno... It sounds too arbitrary. What if he doesn't assault you?"

"People his size don't normally let people my size try and push them around, regardless of whether or not they're patrons." I stood up and adjusted my robes, "You should probably get some sleep. There's not much else we can do until morning." At seeing her hesitant glance, and responded with a friendly smile, "I assure you, you're safe around me. I will not harm you in any way."

The feline lay back and pulled the cloak tighter around herself, "Yeah... I guess so."

I took a seat in a nearby chair, intending to stay awake to watch over her. I left some of the candles lit so she could know where I was at all times.

After a few minutes, she muttered, "Thanks..."

I gave a nod, "It'll be all right, Karina." Once again I had to fight the urge to give her a comforting back rub. A gesture that had calmed me so often in the past just wouldn't have the same effect on a woman frightened of being abused. The best I could give was my own word, and I hoped I could keep true to that promise. To fail would not only put me in danger, but could threaten what little trust of others Karina had left. I let out a slow breath and bowed my head in contemplation, running through imaginary scenarios of what I might face tomorrow. No matter how many times I envisioned myself triumphing, it did little to settle my nerves. I had an uneasy feeling about what I was up against. Not just a muscled guard and his mistress, but an entire town begging for a way out of this hellhole.

"Your time is up! Get dressed!"

I jolted awake at the sound of someone pounding on the door. Sunlight streamed in as thin bands tinted pink through the window curtains. When Tarsus yelled again, I leaped to my feet, "Uh, coming! I-I mean, we'll be out soon!"

I glanced over to the bed, where Karina was blinking from grogginess. Her eyes then shot wide, "It's morning?"

Tarsus pounded on the door again, "We have a schedule to keep!"

Karina pulled the covers from the bed and motioned at me, whispering, "Quick, get in!"

At hearing the door being unlocked, I bolted over and slid in. Karina tossed the covers back over and got on her knees right over my body.

Tarsus swung the door open and glared in, only to find the two of us in an easily-misconstrued position.

Karina faked panting, "Just... finishing up..."

I'm not sure if the massive eland noticed how red my ears were blushing, but he believed her and closed the door, "Then clean up and get out." It was apparent he was not a morning person. Getting him on edge might be easier than I thought.

Karina tossed the covers back and straightened, still over me, "That was close." We then locked eyes, realizing how close we were to each others' bodies. Karina tittered and backed away, "Er... yeah. Sorry."

I coughed, still blushing hot, "It's okay. I... guess you're regaining your confidence."

Karina smiled, "Yeah... thanks to you." She let out a relieved breath, "Look, I dunno what'll happen after today, but I think you've already helped me. I don't want to be here, but at least I know there are some decent people in the world. It might make things more bearable. Thank you, Khalil."

I straightened my clothing and bowed in respect, "It's what the Sages are here for. Now... let's see if we can get you back home, hmm?"

Karina shook her head, "I'm not going home... Not to parents like them. I dunno where I'll go, but it won't be there."

My ears fell at hearing that, then my stomach rumbled, reminding me how long I'd gone without eating.

The door behind us opened and Tarsus snorted in impatience, forbidding me from continuing the conversation.

Karina and I walked out. Melindra-nara stood just outside the room with her arms crossed, grinning right at me, "Well, how was her first night?"

I stifled a gulp as Karina walked past her, "I think I helped her get acquainted..."

The sable nodded, "Good, good." I saw her fingering my necklace around her neck, with the pendant nearly slipping down her cleavage, "I have high hopes for every newcomer here, not just patrons but workers, as well."

Tarsus trotted beside me, glaring at my body, "Come back sometime and I might show you how to have some real fun in this place..."

Melindra halted and turned to chastise him but I took the moment and tried to push him the best I could, "Hey, I don't swing that way you sadistic hedonist!"

Both Melindra and Tarsus froze. I had to make this believable, but deep down I wished I was better at lying.

I stepped up, coming eye-to-chest with the eland, "Get that through your thick skull to whatever tiny brain is in there." I narrowed my eyes, "Besides, you're nowhere near my league. What makes you think you could make an Auran Sage moan in pleasure?"

Tarsus's jaw dropped, his face a mix of shock and pure rage. He muttered out a garbled swear but Melindra-nara stepped up and grabbed his huge arm. A single stare from those eyes was enough to force him to turn and walk off. I smirked and pulled a coin from my belt, "Hey big guy, don't feel too bad. Here, buy yourself a beer and get over it." I tossed it his way and he swung out to catch it, likely smashing it in his clenched fist before walking off.

Melindra chuckled, "I never expected a little fennec to have such teeth. I hope you didn't scar Karina..."

Something then occurred to me... Karina was supposed to be a virgin, but there was no stain on the bed sheets to prove our night together. Thinking quickly, I tilted my head and replied, "Indeed, and speaking of which, I thought the feline was supposed to have been 'pure,' but she left no evidence of it on the sheets. Are you trying to cheat me? I didn't pay for someone who wasn't a virgin."

Melinda blinked, taken aback. I thought I had her, but her expression shifted to a condescending look, "Nice try, but if you want your necklace back, give up." She put a hand on my shoulder, "Fennecs are small creatures, so it's no wonder she didn't 'pop.'"

My ears flattened. That hurt.

The sable turned and walked away, "In any case, our transaction is complete. Feel free to come back to savor the Rose Petal's many delights of the flesh."

I stood there, dumbfounded. Getting Tarsus riled was easy, but Melindra would take some serious creativity in order to sway. I headed down the stairs, having no other choice but to continue with the plan and hope it would work.

I passed Tarsus on the way out and pantomimed a crushing grin. The eland grit his teeth and took a large swing from a beer bottle.

I came out into daylight and paused to gather my thoughts. Tarsus was fuming, but Melindra was keeping him on a leash. The only way for him to attack me would be to give him a reason to, and that wasn't going to happen as long as that sable was watching.

I then noticed another guard, this one a toned zebra, kicking a gawker away. A plan came to mind and I walked away, summoning a light gust to carry my scent back into the Rose Petal. All I had to do was stay nearby and wait for Tarsus to get tired of me hanging around here. I just hoped Karina would be okay until then.

I situated myself in an alley between a few run-down buildings across from the brothel. I didn't know how long this would take, and just waiting was nerve-wracking. I realized I could be facing the wrath of one large and very angry ungulate. Even with my training, a small guy like me may have some trouble defending myself. Nonetheless, I reminded myself this was for a good cause. A Sage commits to the protection of innocents and doesn't back down from that commitment. I kept my ears perked, eyes peeled, and nose high in order to keep from being ambushed.

An hour went by. No matter where I waited, I detected no trace of anyone coming near. It was bad enough being able to overhear the awful pick-up lines that potential customers gave the women over there. Having to listen to an occasional guard beating up an onlooker out of sight got even more frustrating. Why weren't they going after me? The fact my stomach kept grumbling didn't make things any better, but I refused to eat until I knew Karina was safe.

I let out a sigh and leaned back against a wall. A scent wafted into my nose--this one with faint traces of lavender mixed with the rest of the area's dust. I looked up to see a silhouette on the building's roof holding a huge rock.

I spun away right before the stone crashed at my feet, missing me by mere inches. The stone-thrower and two more figures leaped down to surround me. They were all otters in matching outfits of local militia.

I lifted an eyebrow, "Am I breaking any laws?"

A familiar voice boomed, "You had your fun last night. Now it's my turn." Tarsus emerged from around a corner, glaring at me in hatred. "What we do to loiterers is nothing compared to what I'm about to do to you. No one humiliates me!"

One of the otters charged. I spun and socked him in the gut, but then a hoof flew out and slammed me back against the side of a building. I dropped to my hands and knees, dazed and throbbing in pain. I didn't notice Tarsus approaching until he grabbed my head and lifted me up to his eye-level, sneering.

I let loose an air burst into his stomach, staggering him, then kicked up into his armpit, forcing him to let go. I hit the ground hard and punched a pressure point on his leg, sending him down in shock.

The other two otters leaped over him and attacked. I ducked a kick and elbowed one in the kidney but caught a nasty claw swipe from the other in my right arm. I backed away and dodged the next swing then punched back but he caught my fist. He tried to twist it, but with a sudden gust I leaped at him, spinning as I went, and delivered a knee-smash to his head.

The assailants lay on the ground as I tried to remain standing. My vision was still blurred, my head pounded from a near-concussion, and my bleeding arm hurt like fire, but at least I was still conscious. I glanced over to Tarsus as he writhed on the ground. I knew it wouldn't be long before his shock wore off, so I tore the belts off the otters and bound his wrists and ankles, then tried my best to pull his heavy bulk out toward the brothel. I had to get noticed.

I only made it halfway there before collapsing in exhaustion, but it was far enough for the zebra guard to see who I was trying to drag. I got back up and looked right at him, "Get... Melindra..."

The zebra gawked at the realization I'd taken down Tarsus, then turned and ran in, yelling the mistress's name.

I made it to the entrance and tried to catch my breath, then heard quick footsteps padding my way. I looked up to meet a scowling sable trading a glance between me and Tarsus outside--the eland was trying futilely to free himself.

She bared her fangs at me, "What do you think you're doing?"

My ears flattened, "Defending myself. Am I to expect an attack every time I visit?"

By this time, the zebra had already dragged Tarsus back, but hadn't released him. Melindra stared down at the bound eland, then spat, "Idiot! How could you let yourself be goaded like this?"

Dust billowed from Tarsus's nostrils, "He was loitering..."

Melindra wrung her hands, then clutched my arm, right on my slash wound, and led me further inside, "We can get you cleaned up, but don't expect a free visit."

Her grip hurt more than I thought it would, and as she let go my lightheadedness seemed to get worse. Nevertheless I followed, "Fair enough, but while I'm here I'd like to know how you could have local militias under your employ."

Melindra stopped, then glanced back at me, "What gave you that idea?"

"The fact three of them accompanied Tarsus when he attacked me. I thought soldiers were to report only to their officers..."

The sable turned as my vision became more blurry. I shook my head to try and regain composure, but it made me even dizzier. I looked back up at Melindra and my eyes focused onto her raised hand, still soaked with my blood. On one of her fingers was a ring with a sharpened point inwards, connected to a tiny capsule that I knew was once filled with poison.

She grinned in malice, "You had your chance to leave here, but you wanted to play hero." She approached as if confronting wounded prey, "That will cost you."

I turned and tried to run, but my legs felt so heavy! I tripped and fell right onto my stomach. My slashed arm had been rendered completely paralyzed. I tried to pull myself forward with my other arm, but my strength continued to fade. Within moments, I crumpled to the floor, wheezing.

Melindra's shadow came over me, "This is the same toxin I use to subdue many of our 'first-timers' here. I've always wondered how effective it would be on a Sage." She kneeled closer and hissed, "Don't assume I'm not aware of your conversation with Karina last night. The rooms are indeed soundproof, but I never said they were spy-proof. Half the reason I have such a tight grip on this city is because I can blackmail every single official in this region with the information my girls have gleaned from them."

I muttered back, "K-Karina..."

Melindra stood and sighed, "She'll be fine, once I show her the kind of power she can wield with such skills. It may require some extra effort in breaking her spirit, but once I've done that she'll be one more pawn to ensure my fame in this city remains. Speaking of which..."

She snapped her fingers and two guards pulled me up off the floor. They threw me onto a nearby couch and three of Melindra's girls surrounded me on the cushions. One of them covered my wound with a pillow. The venom had completely paralyzed my body. I could do nothing to escape or even move.

I heard Melindra talking to someone outside my field of vision, and within moments I saw Karina walking down the stairs. The two guards grabbed her, then Melindra walked up and backhanded the cat across the face.

"Did I not tell you never to trust the people that come in here?? This fennec told me you were trying to escape!"

Karina took a horrified glance at me, "Wha... what?"

My mind screamed to will my body to move, but I was completely immobile. The girls on the couch acted like they were my "reward" for weeding out the unwilling.

Melindra continued, "I told you from the very first day, this will be your life. The people in this town will ruin you, but only I can protect you from them. Now, thanks to your stubbornness, we'll have to break you all over again!"

Karina struggled in the arms of the guards. Tears of anger welled up in her eyes, "Backstabber!"

Melindra clutched the young feline's face, letting her claws draw a tiny trickle of blood, "You want vengeance against this world that betrayed you? Your parents, your so-called 'friend' here? I can easily teach you."

Karina bared her fangs, "I don't need help!"

Melindra tightened her grip, "Two days at my mercy, and maybe you'll change your mind. I can show you how to dominate anyone who tries to take advantage of you, even by fooling them into giving up control. All it takes is the sacrifice of your own dignity."

Karina's legs began to shake as she felt her edge slipping. Melindra's very presence implied a power rarely seen, yet the feline's expression remained defiant and angry, "I-I'm not afraid of you..."

Melindra smiled, "We'll see..." The sable shot me a smirk, then ordered Karina to the basement. The cat kicked and screamed as the guards pulled her away, but Melindra-nara remained calm as she watched them go, "Did you see what you've done, fennec? You've corrupted her far more than I ever could have. You tore down her hopes of escaping, and now I can use her own anger against herself. She'll submit. They always do. It simply takes patience, for no one has the strength to remain defiant forever."

I wanted to tell her not to underestimate one's own passion, but that thought crumbled in the realization that she was partially right. Last night, I let her own anger fester. I used it in an attempt to help her open up.

Melindra motioned to the guards, "Strip him, bind him, and gag him. Once the poison wears off we'll begin the breaking process. I'm sure there are plenty in this region who will pay a fortune for the chance to ravage a Sage, and when they do, I want him to struggle."

The guards pulled me up and did just that. They dragged my limp body into an empty room and tossed me onto the bed, then left. I lay there, alone, naked, and helpless as my body fought to rid itself of its paralysis. I'm not sure how long I was there, but it was agonizing. I couldn't get out of my mind the fact I let Karina justify her own anger, rather than help her cope. The damage could be irreversible, and it was my fault for allowing it to happen. I had made her situation worse simply by being stubborn and trying to help all by myself.

I could have said something different to her. I could have tried to reason with her, to see if there was some sort of redemption for her parents. Now, however, it was over, and we both were to be punished.

My locked muscles steadily loosened as time went on. It gave me a new determination... They had dealt with Sages before, but Melindra implied they'd never held one captive. If I was going to attempt an escape, it would have to work the first time. Hopefully... my luck will finally pan out.

I heard the door behind me unlatch and open, then relock upon closing. Footsteps scuffed the floor as someone approached. My body was still horribly weak, but my resolve was as headstrong as usual. I had to fight back, no matter how futile the attempt.

The paralysis of my body had weakened my Aura, but I still had enough strength to summon a weak drop in air pressure behind me. Like a bowstring gathering tension, I prepared myself to let loose whatever I could muster at the first touch.

"Khalil... You can relax. It's me."

The gust dissipated. That voice... Santo?

"I've already incapacitated the one spying on this room." The wolf walked around into my view and removed his hood, revealing the black-furred wolf underneath. Those shimmering gold eyes were an inconceivable relief. He untied my bindings and removed the gag from my mouth, then held up a thin dagger coated in blue fluid and pricked my neck. It hurt, but my body was still too weak to respond.

"I've dealt with paralyzing toxins before. This should counteract the effects and stimulate your muscles, but don't overexert yourself."

As the medicine worked its magic, the wolf pulled out a bundle under his cloak, revealing a set of regal, blue garments. The clothing I arrived here wearing. The striking apparel of an Auran Sage. With it was my crystalline sickle sword.

"How... did you find me?"

Santo chuckled, "I detected your scent everywhere around here and assumed you were still inside. Given the blood I smelled in a nearby alley, I decided to investigate. I tricked Melindra into thinking I had finally given up on the town and come to indulge in the Rose Petal's services. Melindra always had a flair for the dramatic, and I rightly assumed she would bring me to you as a lay, hoping to reveal later that I had raped the very Sage sent here to liberate those held against their will." He let out a sigh, "It took the monastery's entire savings, but I had a feeling this might be a turning point."

I coughed, "So Karina was right... the monastery was keeping the donations... You were saving up for something that could change the town's misfortune."

"Correct."

"I have some information that could make that happen."

As my body continued to strengthen, I told Santo about Melindra-nara's ability to blackmail the nobility, as well as her hiring and bribing the local militia, which was an act of treason here since it could turn soldiers against the rulers. That, coupled with the fact Melindra was drugging some of those forcefully brought here, implied she was exaggerating the debts people owe her in order to acquire more prostitutes. We had to bring her down immediately.

I stood up on wobbly legs and hefted my sword. It seemed heavier.

"Be careful, Khalil..." Santo warned. "You will not be at full strength."

I formed a tiny cyclone in my hand, "It will be enough... We have to free Karina." I kneeled at the door and listened for passers-by. A thought came to my mind, "Santo, what made you so sure Melindra would bring you to me instead of one of the women? I'm not that feminine, am I?"

Santo glanced away with a grin, "A few years back, I had a bit of a... history with that zebra guard before he began work here. Melindra is one of the few who know of my predilections."

I smirked and carefully pushed the door open. The hallway was narrow, but we knew what direction to go by the scents we caught. I used my anemokinesis to prevent our own scents from wafting toward guard patrols while bringing theirs to us. With it, came one that forced a gasp, "Karina..."

We followed the scent using alcoves to remain hidden and my ears to detect footsteps. Judging by all the muffled noises, I assumed we were already below-ground on a basement level.

Suddenly, a door opened next to us revealing a guard still pulling his belts on. We hid behind a stack of barrels, but my stomach let out an impatient rumble, catching his attention. He whirled to see us and shouted out before I could knock him back. Immediately we heard movement from behind.

Santo pulled out a pair of daggers made of the same crystal as my sword, "I'll hold them off. Find Karina, hurry!"

I nodded and darted down the hall, leaping over another guard then sliding under the legs of the next, using my size to move through. I kicked off a wall and down a side-passage, then spun and focused air into my palm. As guards rushed toward me, I let loose a massive gust and threw them off their feet into a pile of dazed bodies.

Karina's scent continued down the lower corridor and ended at a heavy door. I pressed my ear against it and heard Tarsus speaking. "Bruises can heal, and I'm well versed at only leaving temporary scars. All you have to do to make the beating stop is submit!"

Karina's ragged voice followed, "No... I'm not like the women here!"

I bared my fangs and held up my sword. The crystalline blade glowed, letting out a sharp, singing tone before I slashed the lock clean off. A gust burst the door open and I charged in, blasting a surprised Tarsus into the opposite wall with another wind surge to knock him unconscious. I turned and found Karina dangling from her wrists, bruised and bleeding but still carrying a spark of defiance in her eyes. I sliced the chains to let her down, but when she collapsed on her feet she refused to let me close.

"Stay back!" she coughed. "What are you doing here??"

I gasped for breath, even weaker now from the exertion, "Rescuing you... You didn't actually believe Melindra when she tried to turn you against me, did you?"

Karina stood up, eyeing me in suspicion.

I kneeled, leaning on my sword, "She excels in deceit, Karina... That's how she gains status. Please... trust me. I never betrayed you... She used me just like she uses everybody else in this city."

Karina looked at the floor, torn among her emotions. I heard something from behind and whirled, catching Melindra's arm right before she could stab me with her poisoned ring again. I twisted her arm around and jammed her hand into her side, dosing her with her own paralyzing toxin.

The sable hissed, "This wasn't... supposed... to happen! You're ruining everything!"

My strength gave out just before her legs did and we both collapsed onto the floor. I tugged my necklace from her neck, "You didn't earn this..." and then pulled myself up against a nearby barrel, "I'm placing you under arrest for kidnapping, slavery, espionage, and treason, among other things."

Karina looked on in disdain at her former mistress, then noticed my sword on the ground and lunged, grabbing it and pulling against Melindra's neck.

"Karina, no!" I yelled.

The feline snarled, "She brought it on herself! This is payback!"

Melindra was unable to struggle. I saw the fear in her eyes, and took a careful step toward them, "It's over now. The monastery's Sages are outside making sure the guards are subdued. I have enough information about Melindra's unethical 'business' here to have her thrown into a dungeon for life. We've won. There's no need to kill her."

Karina glared at me, "But look at what she's done! She ruined peoples' lives!"

"And she'll pay for it after tonight. No one can be blackmailed anymore. She's powerless. Do you really want to murder a helpless person?"

The feline's ears flattened.

"Karina... it's not worth it."

She growled and tossed the sword, "You're right... She doesn't deserve a quick death. She's lost everything, and I want her to feel that for the rest of her miserable life, knowing she'll never get it back." Karina let out a sigh, "But I don't know what to do now, Khalil. After all I've said about my family..."

"Melindra has no authority or resources anymore. The debts are erased, and those of your father may have been overstated in the first place."

"But now I know I don't want to go back there!"

"We can't change what's happened, but I think this event might help your parents realize what their actions have done. You can make things right with them."

Karina considered the possibility, "You... really think they'll learn?"

"Dunno, but at least you all have a chance now."

The feline glanced away, then leaned forward and embraced me, finally feeling safe. "Yeah..." I put a comforting hand on her back as she tearfully muttered, "Thank you, Khalil. I'll never forget this."

"Neither will I." My stomach grumbled again, this time louder. As Karina tilted back, blinking, I added, "...and I can finally get some food..."
