#1 of How I Came to Love My Best Friend

Hello, everyone! This is the story I've been hinting at for quite some time, but I finally have the first chapter done in a way I was proud of. It features a new set of characters and began as a writing experiment, so I hope you like it. I know the story is a bit short, but that's the style that I'm experimenting with, so there will be more soon. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Let me get this straight: I never expected anything that happened to me in September of 2022, but I have yet to regret the experience. It's a long story and came as a shock to me, but I'll try to tell it all to you as best I can. It all starts with an eviction notice and a desperate call I made to an old friend... Here's how it all happened, if you really want to know.

Sunday, September 4, 2022:

"Really, evicted?" I asked my landlord, begging for a second chance after waking up at 4 in the afternoon.

"I've had enough of people complaining about that damn music you play, kid. Here's some advice: get the hell out of an apartment building if you're going to pull that," the fox responded, exasperatedly, "Look, wolf. I'm sorry, but it's bad for business. I called a U-Haul for you, but that's basically all the help you're getting. Good luck."

I kicked a can on the way out, cursing at everything in sight for my own failing. I just got a job: finally someone was crazy enough to hire me as a head professor at some upstart college on the east side of the city. I guess I deserved the position, having a PhD. and all, but I felt pretty stupid at that moment for losing my chance at finally getting a good job because of my irrational need to blast music. I had a day; ONE DAY, before classes started and I taught my first class. Unless I wanted to go homeless, I'd need a place to call home...and going back to my parents again was not an option. Especially not after what happened the first time I left this city.

Then I remembered my best friend from my undergrad studies, "Wait, that husky Luke used to live around that area...do I still have his number? I haven't spoken to him in years! This is extremely awkward, but it's all I've got." Selecting him from my short thirty-four person contacts list, I put the phone to my head as I packed up my stuff.

"Hello, who is this?"

"Umm, hey, man! It's Marcus. Y'know, from college?"

"Holy crap! You remember me! It's been a while, my friend!"

I was elated that he still considered me a friend. "Yeah, I know. Listen: you're probably thinking I'm in jail and I need bail or something."

"That was my exact thought," he laughed.

"Well, it ain't much better. Uhh, could you get me an apartment near you for a few nights, Luke? I know it's short notice, but I finally found a job a block away from where you used to live. It's that or the streets..."

"Mark...well, the only problem with that is..."

"Did you move?"

"Only a block or so, but you know why people live at this part of the city, right?"

"Not really, to be honest."

"I have never lied to you before, so...it's because it's a sort of gay enclave. If you move in near me and I found you the place, it'll look like we're...you know! You probably have a girlfriend and it would be really weird because people would expect me to be close to you."

"Luke, I haven't dated since that time after Senior year, so my dating reputation is nonexistent in this city. Come on: it's just a few days for now and I'm sort of evicted..."

"Mark, you're evicted! Damn, you probably should've told me that first! I'll send you my address."

"No problem, I'll drive the truck up there and I should be there in an hour or so. See you then, Luke. And thank you so much."

About forty minutes later, I double-parked the massive U-Haul that blocked the entire narrow city street to unpack my guitars, computers, recording equipment, books, and clothes. My landlord was in the passenger seat and quickly drove away as soon as all my stuff was out of the truck. Finally catching my breath, I looked at the building which I was about to enter. The façade had the inscription "The Home of Luxury" and looking inside at the theme of gold paint only confirmed this title. Somebody's been doing well for himself to live here...

Dragging all my stuff behind me on the red velvet carpeting, I approached the woman at the counter, once again out of breath, "I'm here...for Luke...Thomson?"

"Really? With _those_clothes?" the well-dressed leopardess remarked smugly.

I looked down at myself, shrugging after seeing that I was wearing my "The Black Keys" t-shirt and carpenter's shorts in a tan color that matched my body fur, "What's wrong with these clothes?"

She laughed, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be so harsh. I'm a fashion designer, but I finally got the vibe that you must be a musician."

I smiled back, "Yeah. I know it's not the best, but it works for my salary right now. Do you know what Luke has been doing for a living recently?"

"Luke? He's an artist. He's been getting a lot of publicity lately and it's been pretty awesome for him. So, could I ask your name?" she kept me focused on the task at hand.

"I'm Mark. Marcus Canisius."

"Are you his partner?" she asked casually.

"It's complicated," I answered, blushing profusely.

She chuckled, putting my name into the system, "He's already on his way."

Almost half a second later, I felt the body heat of the husky behind me, "Mark!"

Just before I can react, he tackled me into my luggage, "How's it been, Luke?"

The husky (who wore a blatant "Guys Only" t-shirt) picked me up from the floor and carried all my stuff himself, leaving me to walk behind him. He approached the leopardess, "This is the friend I told you about. He's taking the room next to me, so just charge me." He got into the elevator and beckoned me to go in with him, but the lack of space made it impossible to do without rubbing against him. Giving him as much personal space as I could (because I know that people don't like the feeling of sweaty fur), I got inside with him.

He decided to make conversation on the way up, asking about how grad school was and what job I got and I kept answering his questions as the elevator kept going up. I took a quick glance at the elevator controls and realized that Luke has the top floor penthouse suite. I knew he warned me it was going to be awkward, but then I was certain it was going to be awkward. He was rich and I was going to look like his pet! Not only that, but "the room next to him" is definitely not the low-rent, burned-out building I was expecting to get that deep into the city.

Like the gentleman he is, Luke allowed me to exit the elevator before him, even though he was carrying all my crap behind him on one of those baggage cart things. Unlocking the door (and making a drum roll for himself), he revealed a massive suite painted in white, with stairs to a balcony and a seemingly infinite amount of space in all directions.

"I got a bed for you in the room past the fireplace, because I'm sure you didn't want to sleep on the couch or something. You know, it feels a bit warmer on this floor with a friend!"

"Luke, I feel like a jerk. I'm taking advantage of your generosity here. I haven't talked to you in forever and you bought me a bed and got me one of the most expensive apartments in the city? Come on: I can't compete with that!"

"Do you know how much it sucks to live up here by myself? It'll be awesome with you with me, Mark! You can come in anytime since the door between our apartments is open, but just knock before entering, okay?" he winks.

Ahh, the insinuations! Too bad that when you're tired and still a little enraged, you don't understand the difference between a joke and his actual advice. And that, as I later discovered, was advice.

Setting up all my equipment (guitars, amps, computers, clothes, accurate replica of Newton's cradle, that thing that explains momentum), I finally collapsed onto the bed only moments before Luke called out for me, "Hey wolf! Dinnertime! Time to catch up about the last four years!"

Mumbling about my tiredness, I sucked it up for Luke. He bought me an apartment! The least I could do was be cordial to him. "I'm coming, Luke. Sorry I'm taking so long: this is the biggest apartment I've ever seen. You realize I probably could've paid, right?"

"What's a few thousand dollars amongst friends, Mark? It's alright; I have a lot more money than I need."

I walked into his side of the apartment, smelling pizza in the air, "I still feel like a jerk about this. I thought you still lived by the projects. But hey, it looks like you're really making a name for yourself, so I'm glad." I started eating some pizza after he took a bite of his.

"So Mark, what did you end up getting that fancy degree in?"

"Physics."

"Oh, cool! So is that what you're teaching?"

"Yep. Except the school is really understaffed, so I'm also a counselor because of my minor in psychology and I supposedly have a music program."

He laughed, "That's how we met! Freshman year Intro to Psych!"

I smiled, scratching the back of my head, "Yeah, I almost forgot about that class! Damn, that prof was a total jerk..."

"Thanks to you, I passed that class. You tutored me almost every day. So there: you've earned the money for the apartment for helping me then!"

"I guess...and thank you for this, Luke."

"No prob. Why were you evicted though? You were always nice to everyone back in college and it definitely wasn't keeping up with payments."

"I like playing music at obscenely high volumes. That sort of got me in trouble."

"Ahh...well, if you let me ask a few really personal questions, I'll let you blast your music any time you want."

"Really? I'll accept that proposal."

"Alright. First things first: are you gay like me?"

"I'm bisexual."

"Good enough for me," the husky grinned, "Top or Bottom?"

"What?!"

"Hey, you said you'd answer..."

"Fine...bottom, if I'd have to say."

"Submissive, then?"

"Kinda, sorta."

"I'm guessing it wasn't easy moving on after Emilia?"

Thinking about my ex-girlfriend was still hard for me, even that far down the road, "Yeah, I missed her. She's why I left, as you probably found out, but I'm fine now."

"What hobbies? Still the same?"

"Video games, playing at clubs, reading books..."

"I like all of those things too, as you know, but most of all, I want to hear you play at one of these clubs. I want to hear the music that got you kicked out, because I can't believe such a quiet wolf listens to crazy rock music really loudly."

"Fine...I'll grab my guitar if you get me a place to play at."

"Downstairs. Stage is always open."

"That works!" I smiled.

Setting up all my pedals and amps, about a half hour later, I was ready to perform. I felt like being a bit of a tease and starting off with a ballad and then progressing to my rock, just to trip him up. I stepped up on stage with my acoustic in hand, playing "Please, Please Me" by The Beatles in the nicest way I could, trying my best to seem as innocent as possible:

Please Please me, oh yeah, like I please you...

After finishing the number, he called out, "I knew it, you goodie-two-shoes!"

Keeping him guessing, I went into a cover of "Little Black Submarines," finally getting a reaction from the husky for the rock vibe. It also played into my feelings about my ex-girlfriend, Emilia:

I should've seen the glow

But everybody knows

That a broken heart is blind...

I smiled deviously, before ripping into a cover of the rebellious "In One Ear" by Cage the Elephant, ending with:

And so it goes in one ear and right out the other

People talking shit but you know we'll never bother

So it goes one ear and right out the other,

People talking shit, they can kiss the back of my hand.

At that point, after the cursing and venting about Emilia, Luke finally believed the story about my eviction. I closed my set with "Howlin' for You," just to make him feel good about himself:

Baby, I'm howling for you...

I collapsed off of stage, tired as all hell from the stressful day just as Luke came around to bring me upstairs.

"Did the chorus of 'In One Ear' help you see the rebel in me?"

"A little. But you're still cute for opening up with The Beatles and closing with The Black Keys."

"Hey, you're an artist! I'm the musician. Only I can criticize myself," I joked nonsensically.

"Come on now. I've had too many drinks for a Sunday and you've got a big day tomorrow, cutie. Let's get on the elevator to your room..."

It didn't compute that he called me "cutie" until I was taking a shower in my new apartment about an hour later. I was just reaching for some soap and then it hit me, "Did I just flirt with him with my songs and did he just flirt back?" I facepawed pretty hard after that, knowing I left a bad impression...or maybe the impression that he wanted me to leave. It didn't really matter to me then, "As if...he totally has a partner already! He's way too popular for me!" I felt silly about even thinking about it. So silly, in fact, that I decided I'd walk over to his apartment and tell him about it. I took a towel and got out of the marble bathroom.

Just as I walked over to his apartment, I witnessed a naked husky patrolling the room, his cock somewhat raised from his large sheath. It didn't even register to my tired mind that this husky was Luke. He turned to face me, laughing, "Hey there! What did I tell you about knocking, Mark? Unless you wanted to find me naked...in which case you'd better drop that towel and make it even before I press charges."

"Luke?"

"I'm just joking! I'm probably acting a bit loopy, but I'll be alright. Just call me if you need a lift tomorrow. I'd never ask you to find a car by tomorrow, so I'll be happy to drive you into work tomorrow. See you then!"

I nodded at the disoriented husky before walking back to my apartment and closing my eyes on the balcony chairs. I needed to think about all this...but the only problem was that I could only think about Luke's dick and that was a problem. I usually didn't have the sort of thoughts that I was having... I knew then that it was going to be a long night. (And then I realized that I said "long" and gave up on myself).
