Chapter 02 - Introductions
#2 of Life's Secrets
Chapter 2 here but I didn't get my beta to give it a look over. At least, he didn't reply by. Just a warning.
As they approached the forest, Trevor let his curiosity leak out, asking about the area he was now located. To start, they were in the digital world, a world closely bound to the electronics of his universe. Though the digital world truly existed before the emergences of such devices, with their creation, a strong bond was formed between the worlds, allowing beings to pass between them. The connections are weak, though, meaning only the strong or the lucky get to pass. Trevor would be on the lucky side. He just rolled his eyes at the attempt to provoke him.
Renamon, as Trevor was later informed, is what the fox creature's race was called. They were (or so she says) masters of the elements; being one of the few races able to use all the elements of energy. No specific renamon could tap into all the elemental energies; most could only tap into 1 or 2. This particular member could only use Fire and Light energy. There were 4 other "main" elements to worry about were Water, Earth, Lightning, and Darkness. You could tell what elements a renamon could use by the color of its fur.
"I don't suppose you have a name, do you?"
"You may simply call me Renamon," the digimon replied. "I doubt we'll be meeting any another Renamon. There's not many on this whole continent.
Trevor slowly nodded. "Eh, you're right. They'll probably turn any moment now and at that speed, I'm not going to try to catch up to them."
Renamon looked at him confused. "What are you...?"
At that moment, a rustling could be heard a distance ahead. It was getting louder and closer, causing Renamon to take a more defensive stance. It stood ready to release another of its fireballs at whatever was charging them.
"Relax, this one is only human." At that exact moment, another human popped out of the bush. It came running at full speed, unaware and shocked to see another standing in its path. Trevor was prepared, though, as he held a hand out to try and break his charge. To his surprise, though, this human was at least 300 pounds and more than qualified as a bulldozer in this situation. Trevor was trampled without a chance to react.
Realizing what he had done, the stampeding human quickly recovered from the experience and grasped Trevor firmly. "Have you seen my sister?!?" he yelled at the top of his lungs, giving Trevor a fair shake as he did so.
The human was a high school football player; that was readily apparent. He was heavily built with a large but firm body mass. Save a helmet, he was currently wearing his dark uniform displaying his name and a number Trevor found too irrelevant to even observe. Short, straight hair waved with every movement of his head.
Trevor was still shocked that he had been so easily toppled. He could almost feel Renamon snickering as she watched him now struggle with the athlete on top of him. The shaking only functioned to further exacerbate his confusion. "Sister? Seen? Me?" He muttered uncomprehendingly. He knew there was something more important he had to take care of and it would soon be too late.
Renamon lowered her guard and started to walk towards the pair of humans. A smirk was clearly displayed as she got ready to "save" her companion. Suddenly, everything vanished in black.
Trevor saw a thick black fog consume Renamon's head. "There's a renamon behind him! Duck!"
Renamon was quick to listen to the instruction. Thanks to the warning, it narrowly avoided a flying kick aimed at its face. It heard the grass crunch behind him as the new arrival and turned herself to face him.
"It's coming back with a right jab," Trevor declared as he watched the battle, ignoring the fact he still had the other human on top of him. Trevor's ally decided to just sweep both hands in a circle, attempting to parry it from whichever side it was coming from. Feeling a fist deflect to the right, she made a note that Trevor was referring to the enemy's right and not her own.
"Leg sweep," Trevor called out, allowing "his" renamon to avoid a trip attempt. Trevor was prepared to call out another attack but found himself lost as the enemy stopped dead in its tracks. Trevor's ally had nervously shifted around, holding up its hands ant looking around for any sort of sign.
"Another human?" the latest arrival asked. The other renamon reacted by launching a fireball at it. The reaction was merely watching the attack soar far to the side, almost amazed at the lack of accuracy.
After a few seconds, the intended target decided a reaction should be assigned. "Whoa whoa whoa whoa!" He yelled with a feigned sense of urgency. "It's okay; I'm not attacking you anymore." With a wave of his hand, the black cloud disappeared.
The new renamon was a little taller than the first. He had a similar pattern with his fur; though the external fur was brown and internal fur black. The weight seemed to drawn lower, appearing to have more mass in his legs than the rest of his body. This was hard to tell, though, as his attire consisted of a cloth rag wrapped around his head and some rather baggy silk pants. He looked more like he belonged in a forest than a jungle.
Trevor's ally was almost noticeably disappointed. "I wasn't that off, was I?"
"I apologize for the attack," the new arrival stated. "I didn't realize you were another digidestined. I'm shocked to meet another renamon but more so to have met another human so early in our journeys."
"You go by Renamon as well, don't you?" Trevor asked.
Both renamon sighed. Having told their human companions the opposite, the need to have an alternate name was now a necessity. It wasn't that they didn't have them already but that they had no desire to use them.
"For the sake of confusion preventing, you may call me Harry," the darker colored renamon stated. Renamon soon followed by simply (re)introducing herself as Rogue. To the new renamon, the humans introduced themselves as Trevor and Michael.
"You wouldn't happen to be this one's sister, would you?" Harry asked Trevor once introductions were over with.
Trevor had a dumbfounded expression on his face while Michael shook his head and stood up. "No, no, no! Sisters are girls!" Harry rolled his eyes as the joke seemed to go right over his head. "Besides, I said only she's only 7. She's, like 3 feet tall at best."
"You sure she's here?" Trevor asked, opting to sit on the ground, quickly and comfortably crossing his legs. "When was the last time you saw her?"
Michael thought about it a bit and got a weird look on his face, like he knew what he was thinking but didn't know how to explain it. "I last saw her in our world but she was with me when I disappeared...I think. It's kind of fuzzy what happened, I don't really know how I got here! But, like, I know she's here, somewhere. I don't know where or how, I just do!"
Trevor and Rogue watched silently, caring little for where they went. Harry gave it some considerable thought. "Well, there's not exactly a place humans are known to crop up. I suppose you could say here since the two of you both happened to show up around here."
"Let's assume that's as lucky as we'll get," Michael declared. "Is there nowhere else you would go to search for a human?"
"It's been a while since my last human hunt but my best bet would be the human world."
"You're not helping," Michael said as he gave Harry the evil eye. Then his eyes lit up with a revelation. "Actually, any way into the human should be a way out of the human world, right?"
Now Harry found himself at a loss for words. The logic was appropriate and he wasn't technically wrong though, in all actuality, this wasn't helpful either. "Yes. The problem with that is connections to the human world are rare and random. They seem to come and go on a whim, appearing and disappearing sometimes before one can even blink. Even if we set the human world as our goal, there's not exactly a path there."
Michael as disheartened by this news. Harry sighed as he saw the look come out. "I don't know a way there," he stated again. "But I think I know where to find one."
The latter statement aroused Rogue's curiosity. She looked at him with interest but with her head cocked to the side with confusion. Michael's eyes lit up at the news.
"It's not a very safe place, though," Harry continued. "So, if you don't mind, I'd like to barrow your energy." Rogue and Michael's faces swapped expressions. "Right, humans don't know what bonding is.
"Bonding is a process which allows two beings to pool their energy together. From this pool, either of us could use the energy though it will probably benefit me more since humans can't use their energy. The only problem is it isn't exactly a willing offering. Once bound each person as an emotion connected to them. When experiencing that emotion, the energy of both is drawn into that person. Questions?"
"I think I got the gist of it. We bind and if I hear a voice that says 'Happy', be happy?"
"Not quite. I'll have a different emotion and it should be the exact opposite of yours. So if you're happy then I'll probably be sad so being sad will give me the energy while being happy will give it to you."
Michael slowly nodded with understanding before drawing back from a realization. "I hope I'm not happy."
Taking the remark as a form of agreement, Harry stepped forward and placed a hand on Michael's chest. "Don't resist, binding requires a willing transfer of energy to start it." Michael nodded in acknowledgement. In less than a second, Harry disengaged and walked began to walk away.
"That's it?" Michael asked, honestly a little disappointed in the briefness. Rogue nodded to confirm while Harry did the same through verbal repetition.
"But where's the mystifying glowing? Where's the eerie fog out of nowhere? Where's the voice saying that this would forever change our fate?" After a series of supposedly absurd questions with no answers provide, Michael let out a deep sigh. "This is nothing like the movies."
Hunched over, Michael soon began to follow Harry. Trevor and Rogue appeared to wait on each other to take the lead. Both stared at each other, as if silently beckoning the other onward. Rogue soon began to fidget as she questioned their objective. "Are we not following them?"
"We are," Trevor declared, his face displaying no emotion. He kicked one foot over the other and leaned back against a tree. "I was just wondering why I wasn't informed of that whole...function."
Rogue shrugged. "I'm not desperate for power and you never asked. Why does it matter to you? The whole point would be to take your energy and you seem insistent enough to need your own."
"I thought he just stated that we couldn't use it."
"That's not entirely correct but I'm sure you could prove it completely false."
"Look, all I'm saying is that if I'm not going to be using it, I'm more than happy to give it away."
"You do use it, just to a very small extent. I could never take enough that it would actually make a difference to you, but I have no need for it."
"Well I don't and "can't use it very well". So take it!" Trevor pushed himself off the tree and stood tall, exposing his chest for Rogue to repeat Harry's recent action.
Rogue didn't move at first, just staring at him. After a few seconds, she sighed in defeat and took a step forward. "Alright, but if I do this, you're not allowed to throw yourself into a fight again."
"No promises," Trevor declared they stared directly into each other's eyes.
Rogue growled. "It's not an option. Either promise to stay out of fights and let me do the work or I'll make sure you need the energy more than I will."
"I could lie to you and say I won't but if I feel I can help, I will."
"And you can't help in fights. Our kind is..."
"Don't make me tackle you again!"
Rogue paused for a bit, caught off guard by the comment. She clenched a fist but retrained herself from acting rashly. "The whole reason I'm following you in the first place is to protect you. I can't do that very well if you're going and throwing yourself into every battle we wind up in."
"Then let me help you. Maybe if I make you strong enough, I won't feel the need to rush in and fight with you as well."
There was something...off about that last statement. Until that point, she had been adamant about the fact she wanted him on the sidelines. For some reason, she wanted to fight it, argue for him to keep doing so.
Trevor watched as Rogue gave him a strange stare, as if confused by something. He could tell it wasn't what he said; its eyes were fairly unfocused all of a sudden, as if it were staring off into space. It suddenly shook its head and looked away, finally placing a hand upon his chest.
"Fine, that will have to do," Rogue declared.
In an instant, Trevor felt a pull from within. It was like a part of him was being removed but at the same time, he felt a warm energy pushing into him, taking its place. Not wishing it to go as quickly as Michaels did, he resisted this flow as best as he could, though the task would certainly have been a fruitless one. All he was looking to do was to feel this flow, keeping it constant enough that he could examine it.
Rogue was confused; the bond should have formed by now. Perhaps the ice energy had done more than just numb her hands. It did feel like the flow had reduced since she had started. Perhaps, she just needed to push more energy. She wasn't very experienced in bonding; it was more of an instinctual trait.
At the same moment, Rogue pumped more energy than before into Trevor and Trevor stopped resisting. This resulted in a sudden flux of energy rushing in both directions, making Rogue's whole arm go numb but Trevor was receiving fire energy. He clutched his chest and let out a cry of pain. Rogue didn't seem to notice, though.
"That's the second time you've burned me today!" Trevor exclaimed as he pulled his shirt open, trying to look at the burn. He kept searching, though, as there didn't appear to be any blackened flesh.
"Assuming you two just bound," Harry declared, revealing that he had been nearby for a while. "She didn't burn you. She uses fire energy which feels hot to people who haven't adapted to having it. Pure energy can't hurt you but your body will react to detecting extreme temperatures."
Trevor swore quietly as patted his chest, as if trying to put out a fire that wasn't there. It was only then that he noticed that Rogue had remained motionless. If its eyes weren't twitch oddly, he'd have assumed it was paralyzed. He waved his hands but didn't seem to get a reaction. "Are you alright?"
"What?!?" Rogue yelled as suddenly twitched to life. She noticed her hand was still held out and suddenly pulled it back, hugging it to her chest. She was glad her fur would easily conceal her blushing. "Sorry, it's just...um...ice energy. My whole arm went numb."
"You know you're not supposed to exchange that much energy, right?" Harry stated.
"It was an accident," Rogue stated.
Harry rolled his eyes and began to walk off in the same direction he had before. "Are you going to follow us this time or is this where we part ways?" Michael asked as he looked back and forth between the duo and Harry, trying to keep track of him but still wishing to make a polite amount of eye contact.
Trevor nodded as he began to follow. Michael nodded and took off after Michael, wishing to explore the world as fast as possible. Seeing Michael disappear, Rogue started to move as well.
"Did you...um...hear the emotion connected to you?"
"No, I was too busy screaming in pain." Rogue wasn't sure whether to take that sarcastically or... "No, it's not sarcasm, I mean it. Even if a voice in my head did say something, I was much louder than it. I think I heard it but...I can't quite make out the word. Probably better this way."
Trevor sighed as he noticed a confused look on Rogue's face. "See, if I had known, I might have tried to force the emotion upon myself, trying to give you that extra burst of energy when you need it. But the emotion wouldn't be genuine, so I feel it wouldn't work as well. Without knowing, what it is I'm supposed to feel, anything I feel is genuine so when I do feel the right emotion, it'll be stronger, right?"
Rogue nodded, providing a correct answer to Trevor's question though her mind was distracted enough it barely heard. She was nervously fidgeting, minor things but she was. She felt Trevor had it easy, not know what emotions had been chosen for them. For her though, the same 4 letter word kept echoing through her mind.
