"So Tanner," Madsen called out pausing taking a sip of his drink. "Where were you before running into Sarge?"
"Aha! I wouldn't call him 'Sarge' for long! Not after leading that defense." Greenly boasted.
"Heh, I bet we're gonna have to call him Skipper here pretty soon." Tanner paused. "Well we're both in the 105th Battalion. I was Force Recon but I have standard infantry training. Had to use it obviously. Couldn't give you the details on my previous post."
Greenly and Madsen shared a look and said together "Why not?"
"I just arrived from Arcadion. Didn't really bond with the guys being raised on Titanus, its mostly a farming planet, because of not many to talk to or socialize with. All through out basic the only words that came out of my mouth was 'Yes sir!' and 'No sir!'. I kept to myself during chow time and before rack time." Tanner explained.
"Ah I see. Farming was too boring, social life was near impossible, and you wanted to get out more yes?" Madsen said assuming Tanner's reasons for joining the United Colonial Military.
Tanner nodded. He continued to eat his food while Greenly and Madsen carried on with their conversation. There were a lot of soldiers eating in the cafeteria. Assuming they were all back from the mission or rotating from shifts. Tanner looked around. He wasn't entirely used to being around so many coming from Titanus. Agricultural planets do not carry a high population depending on its size. About a thousand or so per continent. Titanus was relatively similar to Earth's size. Not as much water as Earth but enough to sustain life. A few large continents. Most of the land is agricultural. What land isn't used for agriculture it is used for government purposes such as capitol buildings, diplomatic structures, law enforcement, and economic buildings like a treasury of some sort.
"What about you guys? Was your post always the Z1A bridge? Or did you push up like Sarge and I did?" Tanner asked curiously.
"Yea Greenly and I were on the day time rotation. Thank Christ you and Sarge arrived when you did, we wouldn't have fared much longer if you hadn't shot off that gunner." Madsen replied thankfully.
"Did Sarge really dodge death twice? I mean we saw him get up after that shot to the chest but I overheard him talking to one of the special ops soldiers during the ride back about dodging death twice but I assumed he was just exaggerating." Greenly asked in anticipation.
"Yea, I was a couple yards out when the medical team attempted to get him out of rubble." Tanner replied. "He was on board a VH-27 gunship providing air support when it was shot down, he was the only one to survive. Completely unharmed."
"What happened to the medical team?" Greenly asked
"Gunned down by an aerial strafing unit." Tanner replied. "I was lucky to have reached him before another unit flew by. And the rest you already know."
Greenly and Madsen didn't say much else other than looking stunned and amazed.
"He's one lucky soldier" Greenly said in appreciation.
"That he is Greenly, that he is." Tanner replied. "That he is."
Sergeant First Class Coleman Spencer
United Colonial Military 105th Battalion

Primary Operations Complex, Debriefing Room
"So sergeant, that's quite a report. Dodged death twice. Took out multiple enemies as well as aerial units AND took command of the soldiers defending the Z1A bridge holding off enemy forces until reinforces arrived." Petrovsky said reviewing Spencer's report.
"Yes sir! Mission success sir." Spencer replied in a formal state. After his defense on the bridge he had to return to formal military ethics. He spoke to General Petrovsky over the radio before the enemy's final push. He knew his debriefing would be done by him. So he had to snap back into his subordinate self.
"We can cut the formalities Sergeant, it's just you and me at this debriefing, and I must say," the general paused taking a breath. "you are one damn lucky soldier and have done a helluva job!"
"Thank you General. It was...a tough yet successful day."
"What was tough about it Sergeant? Losing your squad after the aircraft went down or surviving the brink of death twice in one day?"
"Soldiers die, people die. It's a part of life and a part of war. We can't escape the inevitable death that awaits." Spencer replied cryptically trying to avoid the second part of the General's question.
Petrovsky nodded. "So it was dodging death twice that made your mission rough around the edges?" he assumed.
"The odds of surviving an aircraft wreck are slim General. But living after being shot point blank in the chest, with medium body armor, and with the ammunition being a forty five caliber round. Pssh! I should have died right there! I would have been dead if it weren't for Private Tanner pulling of my CH-U7 combat helmet and back handing my face."
"Yes I saw that in your report, I'm not going to list that against his file considering it wasn't insubordination, but I will recommend him for a Kyro Silver Star for his actions of today." Petrovsky paused and looked up at Spencer "Do you approve of this Sergeant?"
"He's not my squad member General. This is your decision sir, not mine." Spencer replied indecisively
"Speaking of which Sergeant." paused the General pulling out a small box, a piece of paper, and an enclosed envelope. "You might want to sit up for this one. I am promoting you to captain, for your extra ordinary actions of this mission. Before you thank me, here are your triad pins, wear them with honor. This paper is a requisition form for yourself, Private First Class Tanner, Corporal Greenly, Sergeant Madsen, and Staff Sergeant Bartus that you may fill out according to their skills. For new weaponry and equipment." Petrovsky paused holding the envelope making sure he had Spencer's attention. "Remember the package that the special forces team retrieved? These are your new orders." the General gave him the envelope.
"Sir I-I don't know what to say. Thank you sir!" Spencer saluted. "I wont let you down." Spencer stood up and saluted the General. Petrovsky relieved him.
"You're a damn fine soldier son. Just don't go trying to die, seems to be your main attraction."

Spencer had just finished off the requisition form for himself and his newly attained squad. He thought it through well. While reading off of the UCM's current weapon and equipment database. He included the form with new armor according to their skills. He thought about custom painting his combat armor to boost morale. But he'd decide when he'd receive his new armor. Spencer reviewed the requisition form.

"Well! That looks about right." Spencer said aloud to himself. He signed off the requisition form. He looked around the cafeteria. Looking for a scanner to send to the Chief Requisitions Officer or, CRO, so his new team could retrieve their equipment as soon as possible. He found the scanner he was looking for. He stood up and began to approach the scanner when his new squad mates caught him off guard.
"Hey Sarge!" Tanner called out in a slight excitement. All of his squad was there, anticipating the news from his debriefing.
"Jesus Sarge! You are hard to find." exclaimed Madsen. Spencer turned to them. Raised and eye brow looking towards his triad and sharply looked back at his men. All at once they snapped to attention and swiped up their arms saluting.
"Sir!" they all said at once.
"At ease men." Spencer said with a chuckled relieving them. "I'll assume you are anticipating the news from my debriefing so I'll give you the short version. Tanner, Greenly, Madsen, as well as myself have been promoted. Check the roster when before you hit the rack. Bartus, to keep ranks balanced, you will keep your current rank. You are a part of my newly attained squad. This, is a requisition form for all of us. No I will not give you a peak. And we have new orders in which I will speak to you privately about in a secure room. Sensitive information and such." Spencer said giving the load out to his men. "Any questions?" Spencer asked
"Sir! No sir!" everyone replied.
"Good, now, hit the showers, eat if you need to, and hit the racks. We've got a busy day tomorrow."
