#1 of Rainclouds and Grey Cubes

Aaron gazed outside from a nearby window in his apartment. Sad, raincloud filled day again. It was one of those days that begin with the dull rain, fresh stink of factory residue and ended with loud drunken folks rampaging through the street while still taking the constant bombardment of drops of water. It was indeed one of those miserable days with a big miserable-part written with capital letters. Miserable and dulled, Aaron stepped out of his apartment. Holding out an umbrella and wearing a raincoat he entered the rainy street. He didn't really have any plans for today. Not that they would have lasted for too long. He was one of those guys who was unable to think for more than ten minutes by maximum capacity. He stepped onwards towards the main street. He felt a small tingle at his tongue. Then he decided something: He wanted a drink. ***** Down at the Last Drop's Fall-bar bartender named Michael was cleaning up the shot-glasses. It had really been a quiet day. And a quiet day, was a bad day for him as well as his establishment. Suddenly the door was opened and a figure wearing a raincoat and holding an umbrella stepped in. "A clear case of a loner" Michael thought and nodded towards the figure. "Welcome, Have a seat." he said and nodded towards the newcomer. "So, what will it be?" ****** Aaron inspected the bartender: A healthy looking husky with a bit of "spare tire" around the waist, a friendly face and a nice smile on his face. "I think I'll have a small lager-beer if you have any." he said with a small smile on his face. ******* Michael saw the small smile on the Red Panda's face and was glad that at least for once, his smile was met with similar expression. He nodded when the customer had said a clear and polite order of beer. He turned to pour a small glass full of lager beer. Then he handed it to the Red Panda who had sat down on the bar desk on a stool. "You'r first customer today so this one's on the house" Michael said and turned back to cleaning glasses with a small bit of satisfaction. ***** Pleased about having a free drink on the house, Aaron felt a lot more cheerful than five minutes earlier. He happily took the drink offered to him by the bartender, sat down on a stool and gave a broad smile to him. "Thanks." he said. Then he gulped the beer down his throat and placed his free paw to the table. Suddenly he felt something moving over his paw. He put his glass down in an instant and turned to watch what it was. He saw that the bartender had put his right paw over his own. "I dare say you swing both ways. And by the looks if it, looks like you are rank-and-file virgin case." the bartender said. Aaron was astonished. True, he swung both ways. True, he was still a virgin, but how come it was visible? " "Two things dear: First, you are wearing a purple t-shirt over your black shirt. Second, you have no kiss marks or hickey to speak of at your neck." the bartender smiled. Aaron blush a bit and nodded and lowered his sight back to the glass which had miraculously disappeared. Five minutes passed with utter silence. "Do you want another one?" the bartender asked and pointed at his nearly empty glass. "Nah, I think I'll call it a night." Aaron said and turned away. He grabbed his umbrella from the corner and closed the zipper of his jacket. "Care for some company?" Aaron felt a slight pressure on his left shoulder. He turned and saw the bartender husky behind him. "It is closing time and I got no-one waiting for me at home." Aaron pondered for a moment. This guy here was apparently either one hell of a great guy or then really desperate. So far he had seemed like a degree more friendly "joe-average" bartender who had treated him with a degree of friendliness. "Well uhh...I guess that'd be okay" Aaron mumbled. The husky smiled and nodded. "Just a moment then and I'll lock this place up for the night." this said and pat Aaron's shoulder twice and went away for a minute. Meanwhile, Aaron stepped outside. After five minutes, the husky came out. "This way." the husky said and took Aaron by wrist. Aaron shrugged and followed the husky's lead. After some 15 minutes of walking the husky stopped in front of a common white detached house. "We'r here" he said and dug out a key from the pocket of his jacket. He inserted the key into the lock, turned the key in and the door swung open. The husky stepped inside and pulled Aaron inside by wrist. The house was quite small: Two story yellowish brick house with quite many windows. "Oh and by the way, my name's Michael Blake. What would your name be?" The husky turned to face Aaron. Suddenly Aaron realized something: He didn't know who he was following. The very thought struck him out of the blue so hard that he actually stood still for two second. "Oh, right. I'm Aaron. Aaron Greenlake." Suddenly Michael pulled Aaron closer to himself and kissed his forehead. "It's a pleasure to meet you Aaron. Go and grab yourself something from the fridge and make yourself at home." Aaron blushed. And then his stomach growled. Michael smirked. "Well now, aren't you a hungry pup?" He chuckled and took Aaron by his paw and led him to the kitchen which was quite tidy and neatly kept. "So, what will it be?" Michael smiled and opened the fridge door. There was plenty of beer, some vegetables, few packages of meat and some other mundane stuff. Aaron examined them for a while and turned to Michael, still having a soft blush on his cheeks. "Why are you so kind to me?" he blushed a bit more. "Why wouldn't I be? After all, you are quite cute when you blush." Michael chuckled and gave Aaron's forehead another kiss. "But truth to be told, I'v never had the stomach to stand by and let anyone suffer from solitude for too long. And yours is a textbook case of too long case of solitude life." Michael wrapped his paws around Aaron's waist. Aaron was uncertain what to do in this situation. He thought for a moment while being held by the husky and then said: "A beer and a sandwich would be nice combination". The husky chuckled and nodded. "Good choice." Five minutes later, Aaron was holding a big sized sandwich fit for a king and a large sized lager beer can. He sat down to a nearby table. Michael sat down opposite of him. "Not to sound cheesy or too obvious, but if you want to, you can stay here overnight." Michael said suddenly. Aaron stopped for a moment and thought about what Michael had just said: He, a complete stranger had entered his house and been given something to eat and drink. Again, the dual choice between either a good-two-shoes or a desperate fellow in need of a bed-filling for tonight swung to his mind. Much to his own surprise, both cases were seemingly appealing to him. After all, Michael seemed like a decent fellow: At least kind enough to give a possible bed-filler a proper treatment. "Sure." Aaron smiled back. Michael laughed. "Aren't you afraid of what's going to happen?" "Life's a game and there's no point playing a game if there's no enjoyment to be gained from it." Aaron grinned back. He was starting to like this particular husky. He finished his sandwich and Michael escorted him to living room where the two sat down on a couch. Ten minutes passed and Aaron finished his beer. ***** Michael chuckled and patted Aaron to the shoulders. To him, Aaron was one of those shy guys who needed a bit of time to warm up to get more social. And who knew, perhaps this particular Red Panda could prove to be more interesting than originally had met his eyes. "Do you want to watch what's on the television?" he asked. "Sure." Aaron had said and smiled at the husky. Ten minutes passed. There was nothing particular on the air at this time. The clock was around 20:06 according to the one on the living room wall. Suddenly Michael felt a slight pressure on his left shoulder. He turned and saw that Aaron was leaning against it. "Well aren't you a quick one to melt the ice?" he chuckled. Aaron grinned back at him. "Well, you were the first one to start with kisses." he replied. "Hehe. I like your spirit. Say, do you want another beer?" "Sure." ***** Hour and half as well as three cans of beer later Aaron was leaning heavily against Michael's shoulder. "I think you have had enough with that stuff." Michael pet Aaron's cheek. Aaron didn't reply. At that point Michael realized that Aaron had passed out. To Michael, the whole situation was amusing. He had not witnessed this kind of event since the day he had turned 19 and given up youthful age of drinking. And here he was, at the age of 27, witnessing a wholly passed out fellow on his home couch. With a small foul word he lifted the panda up in a similar fashion like a groom would have picked his bride up. Aaron smelled of beer. Michael noticed that some bit of it had spilled over Aaron's jeans and shirt. Not that it would matter by now. He walked upstairs to his bedroom, lowered Aaron to his bed and stripped the beer-stinking jeans, shirt and socks. Then he noticed that the stench had spread thoroughly to Aaron's undergarments. He shrug, chuckled twice and removed those as well, sat down on the bed, pulled Aaron close to him, lied down on the bed and pulled blanket over them both. Aaron's breath smelled like a mixture of beer, ham and mayonnaise. But he didn't mind. Not right now. He just closed his eyes and drifted to sleep. ***** Aaron felt terrible. He didn't remember much from what had happened yesterday. He slowly opened his right eye. All he saw was a bit of edge of the blanket. And he smelled freshly fried bacon in the air. "Morning sunshine. Had a good night?" Aaron turned to face upwards: Michael smiled at him, directly above him. "Wha...What happened?" "You passed out during the evening. One too many beers in too little time supposedly." Michael smiled. Aaron buried his face in his paws, blushing. Then he realized he was bare-naked. "Where are my clothes?" "They had a bit too much of beer stains on them, so I threw them to washing machine." Michael explained and sat down next to Aaron. Aaron blushed further and buried his face in his paws. "I'm sorry...." he said. Michael shook his head and pulled Aaron in for a hug. "Don't worry about it. I have seen far bigger crises than this. It ain't that big deal." For a moment Aaron's world stood still. And then his stomach rumbled. "Guess someone's hungry." Michael chuckled. "How about some bacon and friend tomatoes?" Before Aaron had time to answer, the stomach replied with a loud growl. "I take that as a positive answer." Michael grinned. Ten minutes passed and then, doorbell rang. At that point Aaron realized that he was standing bare-naked in someone else's kitchen. His face had a sudden flashy idea involving crimson red color and cheek mixing together. "Umm...." "Oh don't worry about that. The folks I'm expecting are nowhere near dangerous." Michael grinned, winked his right eye and went about to open the door. Aaron was ready to burst out into deep crimson out of sheer shame for being naked in someone else's kitchen. He closed his eyes, wishing for a divine intervention or at least some sort of a high-above coming rescue. But no, he was still there, eyes closed waiting for the embarrassing realization that someone he didn't know would take offence about this one. He heard faint sound of footprints closing in. Several pairs of feet to be exact. "And who is this new face here Michael?" "His name is Aaron. I picked the sad looking lone fellow from my bar yesterday. He was kind of miserable so I accompanied him after I had closed the bar, took him here, offered him few beers, he passed out and I decided that it's worth doing, ending up putting him to bed here and offering him breakfast." Aaron opened carefully his right eye: He saw Michael, accompanied by three other fellows: A very masculine looking snow leopard with a magnificent, yet friendly facial features and a astonishingly well kept long brown Vandyke style beard, clad up in a black suit holding a large notebook with him. Next to him, very cute looking young skunk lass wearing a red shirt and simple set of jeans. Aaron estimated that she might be as old as he himself. And finally behind her, there was a spotted hyena boy with a broad smile on his face, wearing black jeans, a white sleeveless shirt. "Aaron. These are my friends. We sort of had plans to dedicate this day for group-oriented games. You know; the root of all role-playing games with real paper and pen systems." Michael held a brief pause and then grinned. "Care to give it a try?" Aaron blinked twice. "Mr. Archbishop of all geek things to come, I think you have scared a living end out of this young fellow's stomach." the leopard grinned and chuckled and extended his paw towards Aaron. "Ibrahim Blake. Pleased to meet you Aaron." "Uuh.....I suppose.....But uh.....Mind if I get some clothes first?" Aaron turned towards Michael. "Hehe. Sure. I think I can borrow you some." Michael chuckled and went away. He returned after three minutes carrying a simple set of clothes. Another five minutes passed and then Aaron was all properly dressed up to ease his mind. "Well now Mr. Novice Acolyte of the cult of the dice rollers, clear up your ears for we'll have a rough introduction of the basics. And after that a briefing, a sum-up and a confession." Ibrahim shot words out like a enthusiastic politician in a heated up debate. Michael grinned. "Don't worry about Ibrahim. He's just one of those folks who would turn any third world country into thriving economic power in mere days if given power. All that using only his words. Oh and these fine folks here are Diana and Roy." Michael gestured towards the more silent part of the merry little group, Michael grinned out pulled out a huge pile of books from a nearby shelf. They varied in sizes and names. But they had one thing in common: They all had the title "Bars, Battles and Brawls" "Hehe. Didn't quite expect the rules to be this vast now did ya?" Michael chuckled and fussed Aaron's hair. Aaron decided that it was time to melt the ice as whole and gave Michael a grinning smile. Then he pulled one of the books close to himself and begun to read through it. ****** It took fifteen minutes to go through all the rules, character sheets, dice-rolls and of course, to pick up a suitable miniature to represent his character. And another ten minutes later, Aaron was all set. "Well then, ladies and gentleman, shall we begin?" Ibrahim grinned and rolled two 20-sided dices within his paws. _____________________________________________________________________________ Please have the decency of leaving me a bit of feedback.
