"On this bed of nails and regret." "Dying of fevers, betrayal and sweat." "I cry!"

The rat sat at her desk, panic rushing through her as she tried to figure out just what to do. She had never had anything like this happen before, in the many years that she had been working here it never happened, and for the last three years that she had been running the orphanage this had never happened. She kept asking herself, how could she lose two of her charges. The past few weeks, she had felt like she was losing control. She hadn't done anything about Bessie and Bri, and that had lead to a massive clusterfuck. She snapped out of her thoughts the moment that she heard a knock on the door. "Come in." She said sitting up in her chair, looking at the door as it swung open. Amanda was greeted with the sight of the same officer that had come out when Cassidy was arrested. "I'm here about the missing persons call." The officer said, Curt was his name, she remembered that much. "Th... Thank you." She said looking in the eye. "Feel free to sit down." She said pointing to the chair on the other side of her desk. She was doing her best to maintain that air of professionalism. "Two of my girls have gone missing." She started. "I had went up to their room this morning to check on them and give the one her medication, and they were gone." She said, her voice starting to shake. "Me and the other workers looked through the house and yard and couldn't find them." "Are you sure that they ran, they may be playing some kind of prank?" He asked, pulling a small notepad from a pocket. "I mean, do you have any proof that they ran? Do you know why they would have ran?" "I do, and I know why." She said looking down at a pair of folders on her desk. "Well I know why Lilly ran, but I'm not sure why Katie did." She said opening the folder with Lilly's name on it. "And why is that?" He asked jotting down a few notes. "Lilly is trying to get to her love... To a girl named Cassidy." She said looking through the folder, reading over the note that she had taken from Lilly the day that she had gotten so sick. "What are the girls names?" "Katie Flowers, she's thirteen, and a numbat. The other is Lilly Swampwater, ten, opossum." She said picking up two small scraps of paper. "These will help." She said handing him a photo of both girls. "Do you know the girl that she is looking for?" He asked taking the photos. "Cassidy Lambert, but I don't know where she has moved to, Lilly has the only envelope that had an address on it." She said looking down and closing the folder. "Do you know if she has any family here?" "Just her father, Carl Lambert." She said looking up to the officer. "Please, just find my girls." She pleaded. "We will do what we can." He said coldly, turning to head out the door, leaving the rat with her thoughts again, only moments later, she burst into tears again, a wash of fear and worry for the girls, hoping that they were someplace safe, and not dead and frozen in some ditch.

"A little girl's lost." "On the streets of L.A."

"She complains about the sharks," "But plays the part of the prey."

"& it's, oh so surreal." "& it's, oh so surreal."

The light of the rising sun started pouring through the large windows at the end of the room, starting to wake the sleeping girls. It was a miracle or luck one that the two had made it all night without being found by the staff at the Denny's, now they just had to get up and get out. "Katie." Lilly said softly as she nudged the sleeping numbat next to her. "Its morning, we need to get moving." She said as she sat up, putting her hand on her chest, a twinge of pain shooting through her stiff body. "I'm up, I'm up." Katie said yawing, sitting up, taking a moment to remember just where she was. "Did we actually make it through the night here?" "Yeah, I don't know how or why but we did." Lilly said picking up her jacket and slipping into it, Katie doing the same. "I guess that the third shift workers are lazy." She said with a little snicker. "So what are the plans for today?" Katie asked, picking up her backpack, before helping Lilly get things straightened up. "Well, we have to get some supplies." Lilly said stretching a little. "I figure we can do that and find out just where we are at the same time." "I'm not looking forward to that." Katie said as she watched Lilly putting on her backpack on, before heading to the partition and opening it just enough to look out into the restaurant. "Well if it makes you feel any better about it, you can be the distraction." Lilly said motioning for her to come on as she slipped out and into the main area. "That doesn't really help." The numbat said as the two made their way to the front door, slipping past the different people that were eating, reading the paper or what have you. Once they got to the front door the two moved a little faster until they made it outside and started walking down the sidewalk, heading in a direction that they hoped would lead them to a gas station or something like that. "I know, but look at it like this, we will pay them back." Lilly said shrugging a little, a sign for a Shell truck stop coming into view. "Are we really?" Katie asked, looking over to the opossum. "Or are you just telling me that to make me feel better?" She asked. "A little of both." Lilly said. "Between the two of us, we will remember the place and all and we will do our best to send them money for what we got." She said as the two walked into the parking lot of the store. "Just go and keep the guy at the counter busy." She said as they got to the door, and went in. Katie made her way to the front of the store, looking for the clerk, she was greeted with the sight of a male sloth standing at the counter, the name on his tag starting with a 'B'. Katie really didn't want to learn the name of someone that she was stealing from. "Hello there." The male spoke, in a long, drawn out tone, making him sound slow and apathetic. "Hello." She said looking up at the male, smiling and trying to be cute and distracting. "I'm waiting on my mom." She said happily. "Are you a sloth? Can you really hang from trees? What's your name?" She asked, assaulting him with questions, a short pause between her asking them and him answering them giving her time to think of more of them. "I am a sloth." He said softly and slowly. "And I can... It's really... fun." He said looking to the little numbat. "That's neat." She said pausing for a moment. "Oh I think I hear my mom calling." She said turning and rushing off to find Lilly. "My name is Bla..." He stopped, it had took him a moment to notice that she was gone. "Lilly, are you about done here?" She asked walking up to the opossum who was picking things off the shelves. "Just about, I have a few more things to grab." She said looking along the shelf. It was just about then that they heard the same, long drawn out voice calling to them. "Heeeeeeeeey." "Oh shit, he saw." Lilly said grabbing one last jar off the shelf before the two took off running down another aisle, this time Katie gabbing a few things as they made for the front door. "Stoooooooooop." The voice called out, the two turning to look, seeing that the sloth had only just made it around the counter, but then an even more chilling sight. A large male polar bear standing behind him, no doubt the manager here. "Run faster." Lilly squeaked out, the two bursting through the door, nearly knocking over this tall, red and grey furred hybrid girl and the little deer boy that was with her. "Sorry." Lilly squeaked out as her and Katie turned and ran around the side of the building and into the sea of cars and trucks parked there. The two ran for a little bit, before they were sure that they were safe. By the time that they had stopped running they had made it several buildings down the street and had slipped into an ally, both leaning against a wall, panting softly. "Lilly, I swear that you're going to give me a heart attack." Katie said, panting out as she pulled her backpack off and opened it. "I'm sorry." She said panting as she took her bag off. "I think that I got everything." She said smiling and opening her bag, showing off the different jars and can of foods, and a couple bottles of water. "What did you get?" "I got some bandages, motion sickness pills and some other little odds and ends." She said putting the stuff into her bag. The two staying in the alleyway resting after their grab and dash. "So how does it feel?" Lilly asked smiling and looking to Katie. "How does what feel?" She asked, a little confused at what she asked. "How does it feel to steal for the first time, to be naughty for the first time?" She asked poking her tongue out. "I don't want to talk about it." She said shivering a little. She wasn't ready to admit that being naughty was oddly arousing to her, the fact that she was doing something that she would have never done in her boring, proper life was enticing to her. "It's ok." Lilly said softly as she pulled a map from her bag. "And I got this." She said looking at the front of it, it reading 'Bay City MI.' "Well it looks like we know where we are." She said smiling and unfolding the map "Lets see, New Hampshire." She mumbled as she looked at the map a little confused at how to read it. "Lilly have you ever read a map before?" Katie asked, scooting close to the opossum, looking at the map. "We are here." She said pointing to the map dot that read Bay City. "We need to get here." She said sliding her finger over to the dot that said New Hampshire. "So... We missed that place by a mile... So to speak." She said looking at the numbat pointing out where they needed to go. "How are we going to get there? Trains are too... Uncertain." Katie said shrugging. "And seven hundred and fifty odd miles is a little far to walk." "Don't worry about that, I have an idea." Lilly said smiling as she got up and put her backpack back on. "Why does that scare me so much?" Katie asked as she put the map away and shouldered her bag. "No idea, I know what I'm doing for once." She said smiling and poking her tongue out, the two starting to walk again, heading off in a general direction of where they hoped another truck stop would be. A short walk later the two had come up to another truck stop, this one a lot bigger than the first one. This was going to be their last stop in this town and hopefully their last stop between Lilly and Cassidy. Even if it wasn't Lilly wasn't going to stop until she was with her lover, her mate, her everything. "Lilly, just what is the plan here?" Katie asked as she followed the opossum, who was walking through the rows of trucks at this point. Looking at the names of the companies and the license plates on the back. "Well the plan is to find one of theses that is going to New Hampshire, and hitch a ride." She said nodding and smiling as she came up to one. "This one." "How do you know that it's going that way." Katie asked, pausing for a moment. "And who is even going to give two runaways a ride without calling the cops or something like that?" "Well, hopefully we will find a nice one that is willing to help." She said shrugging. "I mean, who could resist the power of our cute?" She said with a snicker. "Lilly." Katie said shaking her head. "Sometimes I really fear for us... Well mostly you." She said tensing up, the two's ears turning as they heard someone starting to walk their way. "Follow my lead." Lilly said smiling and faking her best innocent look. "Hey, what are you two doing?" They heard a male's voice calling out to them, the voice belonging to a male peacock. "Oh, just looking for the nice stud that owns this truck." Lilly said smiling and looking up to the male peacock, batting her eyes at him. "Aren't you two a little young to be lot lizards?" He asked looking down at the two. "Why don't you get back to your moms." He said brushing past them to start for his truck door. "We don't have moms." Lilly said reaching out and grabbing the male by his collar. "We are trying to get to New Hampshire, to the girl that I love." The opossum said looking the avian in the eyes. "So, help us, and I will help you." She said smiling, and teasingly licking her lips. "So, your telling me that you ran away to get to this girl that you love, yet you're offering me your ass?" He asked looking down at the girl. "Yes. I would do anything to get to her, and if that means sucking your cock or whatever, I will." She said glaring at him, her eyes drifting down to the name tag that was stitched onto his shirt, soon letting go and bursting out in a fit of giggles. "Ok kids, just go back to your parents, go find something better to do than playing truth and dare in a parking lot." He said standing up and adjusting his collar, the tall male glaring down at them. "Look, she's a little out of it. The two of us have been through a lot to get here, we have both done things that we thought that we would never. We just want a break, we just want to get to New Hampshire." Katie said looking up to the male, her eyes full of hope, that he would be the one that would help. "Yeah Dick, I'm sorry." Lilly said smiling, holding her chest with one hand and wiping a tear from the other. "Lilly, that's not helping." Katie said turning and glaring at her. "I'm sorry. Mr. Dick, I'm sorry for laughing at you and your name." She said looking up to him, smiling softly. "So will you please help us?" The male, Mr. Dick as Lilly was calling him, just looked down at them for a moment before opening his mouth to give the answer. "Sure, but it's not going to be for free." He said looking down at Lilly and smiling. "Ass, grass, or gas." "Well... Ok." Lilly said looking up to him smiling. "Lets go. The sooner we get on the road, the sooner I will get to see Cassidy." She said nudging past the male and making her way into his truck and into the sleeper cab. "Wow... This is a lot cleaner than I thought that it would be." "Don't mind her... She means well, she just doesn't think things all the way through." Katie said climbing in and moving to get into the passenger's seat. "This is the kinda thing that only happens to me." He said as he climbed into the driver's seat and closed the door. "So... Just how old are you two... And where did you even come from?" He asked as he started the truck and started backing out of the space, before turning around and heading to the driveway of the parking lot, waiting for his chance to pull out onto the highway. "A tiny hellhole of a town to the southish of here, called Jonestown." Lilly said from the back. "And I guess you should know our names since you are helping us out." She said smiling a little. "I'm Lilly." "I'm Katie." The numbat said smiling and looking at the male as he pulled out into the highway and started driving down it. "Lilly, you said something about going after your love, aren't you a little young to be in love? And in love with a girl." Dick said, keeping his eyes on the road. "I mean, I'm not judging or anything like that." "Yes, I'm trying to get to my girlfriend... My other half... My everything." She said leaning and looking up to the peacock. "And yes, I'm in love with a girl. I have little... Well, like literally no interest in boys... Too much... Bad history." Lilly said slumping back in her seat. "I don't know what kind of history you have, but it sounds pretty bad, but just remember they are not all bad." He said shrugging a little, there was a little pause in the conversation before he started talking again. "Have you to given any thought to what you're parents have to be thinking. I mean, their daughters have gone missing." "My family is dead." Lilly said bluntly. "The girl that I'm going after is the only person that has shown me love that has made me as happy as my mom did... Yes, I have friends and all, but this is a different love, ya know?" "My family abandoned me." Katie said turning and looking out the window. "I'm not so much running to get to someone, I'm running to find a place that I fit in, a place that will take me as myself, to find a family or someone that will take me as their daughter and all that." "I'm sorry." He said keeping his eyes on the road, focusing on his driving. "Just remember, it will get better." "I'm sick of hearing that." Lilly said with a huff. "I have heard that for so damn long. Shit might get better, but whenever it does there is something that comes up and bites you in the ass." The opossum said, shivering a little, thinking back to all the times that she could think of it happening. "I'm sorry kid." He said turning onto an exit, heading down another long stretch of highway. "I know that you probably heard it a lot, but what doesn't kill you will make you stronger and all that. So just, keep going no matter what." "Well then I will be able to rule the world at this rate." Lilly said slinking back a little more, soon laying down in the bed of the sleeper cabin. "You two get some sleep, it is a long ride." Dick said, smiling softly. "Lilly you do need to rest, take a nap, I will stay up and make sure nothing happens." Katie said turning back to look at her to see that she had already nodded off. "It's been a long trip for us both, but more so for her." "Has it been that bad?" He asked glancing over to the numbat that was sitting in the passenger seat, before looking back to the road. The stretch of highway that they were was a long and mostly empty one. "Yes. She might not look like it, but she has been fighting illnesses, physical and mental, getting so close to Cassidy, only to have her yanked out of her grasp." Katie said turning to look out the window, watching the trees sailing past. "I'm sure that if it wasn't for Cassidy, she would have given up the ghost by now." She said, yawning softly. "Wow." He whispered, hearing Katie. "Sweetie, you look tired. Go ahead and head to the sleeper, there is a second bunk back there that you can use." "I can't do that." She said yawning again, looking out the window still. "I will get some sleep when Lilly gets up." "It's cause you don't trust me isn't it?" He asked glancing over to the numbat girl, watching her nodding off for a little before jerking awake. "That's a big part of it." She said sleepily. "I mean I'm sure that you know where we are coming from." "I do, but trust me, I have no interest in you two... Well other than getting you two too New Hampshire." He said smiling softly. "Go get you some rest." "Ok..." She said getting up and heading to the back. "Just remember, if you do try something, you have a killer on this truck." She said, trying to act tough. "Don't worry sweetie, I'm not going to do anything that will hurt you two." He said smiling and glancing to her as she went to the back. Once she made it to the back, she slipped off her bag and set it with Lilly's before climbing up into the top bunk. She snuggled into the small bed, resting her head on the soft pillow, she did find it strange that the truck had two bunks in it, but she just pushed it out of her head as she started nodding off, sleep soon taking her into it's embrace. Katie didn't know how long she was laying there asleep, but suddenly her dreams were invaded by the sounds of screams. At first she tried to fight them, to stay asleep, but soon they got the better of her, she jerked awake as a particularly loud one echoed in her ears. It took her a moment to come to the realization that she was in the truck, but it wasn't moving. Looking about she didn't see Dick or Lilly. It was dark, the driver side door was open letting the cold air rushing in. The numbat's eyes went wide as she looked out the window of the truck. The unfolding scene illuminated by the headlights. She could see Lilly holding her left shoulder, blood running down her arm, and Dick holding her knife, slowly walking closer to her. She knew that she needed to do something, but she wasn't sure what she needed to do. She looked around the truck, she knew that the knife was the only weapon that the two had, she had to find something to serve as a makeshift weapon. Looking around, she found what she would need. Attached to the door was a fire extinguisher. Small enough that she could pick it up and swing it, but it looked like it had enough weight to do some damage. Dropping down from the top bunk, she hit the floor running so to speak. She fumbled with the latches, freeing the extinguisher and hopping out of the truck. "Get off of me you fucker." Lilly screamed out, struggling against the weight of the male that was pinning her down. He had dropped the knife now that he had pinned her. "It's like I said, it's ass, grass or gas." he said smiling, one hand holding her down, the other reaching down to start unbuttoning his pants. "and I know that you don't have grass or gas money, so it's ass." "Fuck you." Lilly hissed out, thrashing about. "You're not going to get anything." She said spitting up at him. "Why you." He said glaring down at the opossum. "I was going to let you live and take you to your bitch, but not now." The male peacock lifted his arm high into the air, ready to swing it down, but before he could the area filled with the sound of metal hitting skull. Katie had snuck up on him and brought the extinguisher down against the back of his head. While she didn't have the strength to knock him out, she did stun him. "What the fuck?" He hissed out, one hand holding the back of his head, the other letting go of Lilly as he got up to see that Katie was behind him holding the extinguisher. "Oh you little bitch." He said starting to walk up to her, reaching out for her, the little numbat swinging her weapon the best that she could. "You sorry mother fucker!" A voice came from behind Dick. "I will fucking kill you." Lilly hissed out, Katie having the perfect seat to watch Lilly getting up and picking up the knife up. "You done fucked up." She said. With all the strength that the wounded opossum could muster up, she ran at the male and jumped, landing on his back and clinging to him. There was nothing said as Katie watched Lilly clinging to the male, one arm wrapped around his neck the other holding the knife high. Dick clawed and yanked at the arm that was around his neck, covering her arm in cuts and scratches. "Die! Die! Die!" Lilly repeated as she brought the knife down, the blade sliding into the peacock's chest, causing him to cry and gasp out in pain. She was lost in her rage, Katie could see this, she watched in horror as the opossum kept stabbing him over and over again, soon the male fall forward, nearly tossing her off. "Lilly stop." Katie yelled out as she watched her still stabbing the male, who by now had passed out. "Lilly!" She called out again as she grabbed and started pulling her off of him. She still struggled in the grasp of the numbat, soon all movement from the opossum stopping. Katie carefully moved her to a little clear spot and laid her down. "Ka... Katie." Lilly said sitting up and looking around, watching as Katie climbed out of the truck with the bags. "Did I?" "Yes." She said sitting Lilly's bag down beside her. "He's not dead, so we need to get moving." She said pulling a box of bandages from her bag and start wrapping the opossum's scratched up arm. "Lilly, you really need to be a lot more careful." She said looking up and seeing the gash in Lilly's arm. "I know." She said looking away, meeping a bit as she felt Katie bandaging her arm. "Thank you." "Your welcome." She said finishing up and digging in Lilly's bag, pulling out a new shirt for her. "Come on, we need to get going." She said handing her the shirt, turning to shoulder her bag. "And if you keep this up, you're going to end up in the ER... Or worse." She said shaking her head as Lilly finished changing into her new shirt and putting her coat back on. "I know. Next time... I will think things through more." She said softly, picking up her bag and shouldering it. "I guess that we are back to walking." She said, the two starting to head off down the dirt road that the male had driven down. "So where do you think we are?" Katie asked as they got to the highway, looking up and down the long road, not a car in sight. "No idea, hopefully close to something." Lilly said as she looked down at the dirt road, seeing the way the tracks the truck made, turning and facing the way that the truck would have been going if it hadn't pulled off. "Lets go." She said as she started heading down the road, walking along the guardrail of the road.
