Do Not Touch
Chapter 11
Yanaba thought Yatokya was acting a bit an idiot. When before he had been friendly and courteous to Maka and Pati, he was now cold and curt, ordering them about with a threat in his eye, no longer trading jokes with them, no longer smiling. He had always been prone to such idiocy when it came to protecting her virtue. When Yanaba thought about it, Yatokya was probably the reason she hadn't lost her virginity.
Feeling bad for Maka and Pati, Yanaba took them aside during one of the group's rest stops. "Look," she said, standing with them under one of the many slender white trees of the forest, "my brother can go a bit overboard when it comes to me. Ignore him. Do your duty. Respect me. And I will see that he stays in line."
Maka nodded reverently. "Of course, your highness," he said and placed his paw on his heart.
Yanaba was surprised when Pati shook his head. "I can not . . . my princess . . ."
Yanaba's face hardened. "This isn't a game, Pati. Yatokya is not joking around: he will kill you. You must stop thinking of me. You must ignore your desires."
Pati swallowed hard. "May I talk to her highness . . ." he glanced furtively at Maka. "May I talk to her highness in private?"
Yanaba frowned. "No. What you have to say can be said here - where Maka can hear you and where the others can see us." She jerked her head at the others, who were drinking from canteens, stretching, and massaging their necks not far away. Yanaba almost smiled when she noticed Sa massaging Yatokya's broad shoulders in deep strokes, only to have Yatokya shake him off in alarm.
"I love you, Yanaba," Pati said abruptly, breathlessly.
Yanaba's eyes flew wide and her lashes fluttered at him in shock. Maka rubbed his neck, suddenly very uncomfortable. There was a tense silence as Yanaba looked away, and Pati stood peering at her helplessly.
"Do not call me by name," Yanaba said at last and cleared her throat.
"Yes, my princess," Pati answered humbly.
Yanaba went back to the others without a word, though she could feel Pati's longing gaze on her back as she marched away.
The group set out again, and Yanaba did not know what to do about Pati's feelings. It was agonizing. He lumbered along behind her, clearly suffering, but as dutiful and devoted as before.
They came to the White Cliffs on the second day and walked along the top of the canyon as Genessee had advised, keeping as far from the forest itself as the cliffs would allow. The top of the canyon was perilous as the white rock was fragile. Every now then, one of them would nimbly hop out of harm's way as a great piece of the glistening white rock would suddenly crumble free. The rock always tumbled to the desert wasteland that stretched far below, a place cracked and barren and devoid of trees.
Yanaba stared at that wasteland and had to wonder exactly where they were. She was sure Yatokya knew, but he was being so crazy and overprotective, she didn't want to give him the opportunity to lecture about her clothing again. Walking behind Yatokya in the midst of their procession, she took a step - and screamed as she suddenly dropped away.
Yanaba's heart beat hard in her throat. She sped down several feet, and the jagged white rock ripped her clothes to shreds, cut up her belly as she reached desperately for a hold. She managed to grab an outcropping of rock with one paw and hung on with trembling fingers. Her other paw dangled beside her, and frowning with determination, she swung it, trying to grab with both paws. She couldn't. Her blue eyes shimmered with fear. She was slipping . . . slipping away.
Above, Yanaba could hear Yatokya and the others shouting. The wind beat tears from her eyes and her tail lashed frantically. In seconds, she would tumble to that wasteland far below, and her body would shatter in a pool of blood. Her fingers started to slip again. She closed her eyes, resigned. They would never save her in time, she knew it. So she was started when a strong paw locked on her arm.
Yanaba's eyes snapped open. It was Pati. He was trembling and frightened but frowning and determined. Behind him, Maka was holding him by his chest scabbard. Yanaba was startled by the tears in Pati's eyes. He gritted his teeth and started to haul. Yanaba's face twisted when her body slid higher and the rock cut her afresh. She felt the blood dripping down her belly.
"I am sorry . . ." Pati grunted and pulled again, "my princess . . ."
"Don't apologize," Yanaba whispered. "Just pull me up!"
"Yan! He's got you!" Yatokya shouted from above. "Hold on! Don't let go!"
Pati gave a mighty heave, and Yanaba was hauled over the cliff edge. He had pulled so hard that Maka lost his grip and stumbled back, falling on his tail. Pati fell on his back, and Yanaba fell on top of him. He sat up, breathless and happy. She sat up as well, and it took her a moment to realize she was leaning between his thighs. He touched her curls. "My princess," he whispered and . . . he kissed her.
Yanaba's heart pounded in her ears. She had never been kissed before! And, god, Pati could kiss. When his lips pulled away, she remained with her eyes closed, her lips slightly open and tingling with the taste of him.
"Yan!"
Yanaba swallowed hard and tried to get her bearings as Yatokya helped her up. He touched her face and suddenly hugged her tight, and she realized with a miserable flush that her clothes were torn: she would have to travel naked now. Naked. Like the female warriors of the sun village, who only wore scabbards for their weapons. Ironically enough, her chest scabbard was fully in tact.
"Is everyone alright?" Keme said.
Yanaba could see Maka and Sa helping Pati to his feet. Yatokya suddenly whirled and grabbed Pati by the throat. The others backed away as Pati went rigid in Yatokya's hard grasp.
"You kissed my sister!"
"Yato!" Yanaba shouted. "Stop it!"
Yatokya ignored her. "I warned you!" he growled and punched Pati in the stomach. As the warrior hunched over, he followed up with a knee to his face. Pati dropped.
Yanaba screamed softly. She ran to Pati and fell beside him. His lip was busted . . . again. The poor bastard had taken a beating from both twins. Yanaba helped him to sit up and glared at Yatokya.
"He kissed you!" Yatokya protested and tossed an angry paw.
"He also saved Yanaba," Keme added quietly and placed a firm paw on Yatokya's shoulder.
Yatokya glanced guiltily at Keme and calmed down, though his brown eyes kept darting Pati glares.
Pati didn't seem to mind. In fact, Yanaba thought he seemed very happy. "You are safe," he said when Yanaba looked at him apologetically. He touched her face and frowned with longing. "That's all that matters."
Because Yanaba had been badly scraped by the rocks, they made camp that night near the cliffs. The others sat around the fire as, some distance away, Yanaba sat on a white rock, leaning back on her paws, as Sa cared for her wounds. Her belly had been torn by the rocks, but shallowly enough that the cuts were only flesh wounds. Still, it hurt like a bitch. She couldn't stop her stomach trembling as Sa carefully wound her middle. Her naked breasts were near his face, her naked sex, everything was touched by his breath. She suddenly hated being naked and couldn't understand how lower class females endured the staring: Maka and Pati had not stopped staring at her since her fall.
"Pati truly loves you," Sa said into the silence. He moved to her wounded thigh and began carefully cleaning the dirt and blood away with a cloth and water from his canteen. Tiny shards of white rock had also got in, and as he picked them out with his nails, Yanaba gritted her fangs.
"I don't know what to do with him," Yanaba answered unhappily. Her thick curly mane tumbled around her shoulders. "I can never return his feelings. And Yatokya keeps acting like a crazy fool."
Sa laughed sympathetically.
". . . do you love my brother?" Yanaba asked softly.
Sa's blue and hazel eyes blinked in amusement. "I do not love him, no. I am devoted to him. I am happy to serve him."
"I bet you are."
Sa laughed again. "How do you feel about Pati, your highness?"
"I trust him. I can rely on him. He is a skilled warrior and has served the throne well."
"He would make a fine mate."
Yanaba frowned. "What? No, don't be foolish. Surely Yatokya has told you during your cozy nights together that I like females. I do not want Pati. I simply respect him. I admire his devotion and abilities."
Sa snorted. "You do not have to desire him sexually to make use of him, your highness. One day you will marry, and since you are so determined to marry a female, you will need a mate to produce heirs . . ."
Yanaba nodded thoughtfully as Sa's meaning became clear. Her pale blue eyes peered over at Pati, where he sat beside the fire. As if he felt her stare, Pati turned his head and smiled at her warmly.
"And I'm sure he wouldn't mind it," Yanaba said with a laugh, "if I made use of him."
Sa smiled. "No, my princess," he said, binding her thigh wound now. "He certainly would not."
Later that night, Yanaba waited for the others to fall asleep before she approached Pati. He was on watch with Maka, sitting beside the fire with him. Keme had decided that they should sleep at night now and travel during the day: it was far too risky to walk along the canyon in the dark.
When everyone else was asleep, Yanaba slowly sat up in her bedroll. Pati and Maka had been talking but halted in surprise.
"I wish to speak to Pati," Yanaba said briskly, rising from her bedroll. "Maka, please . . ."
Maka nodded and rose to his feet. "I needed a private moment anyway," he said to Pati. He clapped his brother on the shoulder before moving some distance into the trees.
Pati seemed pleasantly and eagerly surprised when Yanaba sat beside him on his log. He perked up a bit as he watched her. Yanaba perched very stiffly beside him, her paws on her knees, her back straight. She did not look at Pati but at the fire. Her mass of curls tumbled around her, and she could tell Pati wanted to touch them. His eyes also raked over her big breasts, bare to his eyes for the first time . . . ever. He licked his lips and looked at her.
"Your highness?" he whispered hopefully.
Yanaba sighed as she realized: Pati was hoping she was going to say that she loved him too. Perhaps he was hoping she would fall into his arms and that they would make love, but that was not going to happen. Not the love part, anyway. If they did anything, it was going to be strictly for procreation. And it certainly wasn't going to be in the woods of all places.
Yanaba cleared her throat. "I have a proposition."
"I am listening, my princess."
"As I have told you, my only desire is for females. I wish to marry a female and have her rule at my side."
Pati blinked, waiting.
"This leaves the problem of producing an heir. I will need to take a mate to produce children with. When the time comes," she looked Pati in the eye, "I would like that mate to be you."
Pati slowly smiled. "Oh - oh, my princess - I . . ." He hesitated, then pulled her close in a passionate kiss. Yanaba's eyes sprang open when he grabbed her tit and massaged hard. His thumb passed over the nipple. She shivered, and after shrugging him off, she held him away by the throat.
"Do not touch me! I said when the time comes, you drooling --!"
"I am sorry, my princess," Pati panted. "But when you said you chose me . . . my princess . . . I am raging . . ."
Yanaba glanced down and realized with a jolt that Pati was rock hard. He started to reach for her again, but she held him away by the throat.
"My princess . . . please . . . it is throbbing for you . . ."
"It will just be throbbing!" she shrilled. "What do you expect me to do!"
He looked at her sheepishly. "If her highness would suck --"
"No! Never!" Yanaba said at once. "I told you this would only be for the sake of an heir. There is no sense in my putting my mouth on your - no! And if you ever ask me again I shall change my mind!" She shoved him away by the face.
Pati was forced back and caught himself with his paws. He was still breathless and grinning. And still rock hard. "My princess, that you chose me . . . I am honored . . . I can not express my gratitude . . . perhaps I could express it with a kiss?"
"On my paw," Yanaba said grudgingly.
Happy and eager, Pati took her paw at once and kissed it. But he didn't stop there. He kissed right up her arm to her neck. Yanaba shivered and shrugged him off.
"Stop it, I said!" she warned.
Pati was still grinning. "Oh my princess, when the time comes, I shall make such sweet love to you --"
Yanaba squeezed her eyes shut. "Don't go on with this."
"Yes, my princess . . ." Pati whispered. He fell silent and just regarded her happily. He was a drooling pup. She smiled at him reluctantly.
"I love you, my princess. I want you to believe that. And I want you now, so desperately. Look how it stands for you . . ."
Yanaba refused to look. "You will be wanting. Take care of it. I shall get back to bed."
"Yes, my princess . . ." Pati answered, but when Yanaba started to rise, he caught her paw. "No . . . I want to look at you as . . ."
Yanaba rolled her eyes as his meaning became clear. "Fine," she said, sitting back down. "But if you get one drop of your - fluids - on me --" she warned in disgust.
"I will not, I promise," Pati said at once.
Yanaba looked away, determined not to watch as the male fondled himself. A shiver of disgust went through her. Ugh. The very thought of putting her mouth on his cock! That he had dared to ask her still sent mild tremors of indignation through her.
After a pause, her ears pricked forward when she heard it: fapping. Curiosity overtaking her, Yanaba looked at Pati and her pretty eyes fluttered. His fist was closed on his cock and he was stroking himself briskly. His hungry eyes were on her jutting pink nipples as pearly white fluids seeped from the head of his erection. She was startled when his eyes went to her face, soft with longing, and his cock swelled even thicker.
Yanaba fluttered her lashes and didn't know what to think. That Pati wanted her so desperately, that he found her so beautiful . . . it was suddenly flattering. Her eyes softened with sympathy: she would never be able to love him in return.
Very slowly, Yanaba turned toward Pati and spread her thighs. He halted in his fapping and just stared, his mouth slightly open. Smiling at him, she took her pussy lips in two fingers and spread them for him. She also pulled back the hood on her clit. A tremor went through him.
"Oh . . . oh my princess . . . your pussy is so pretty . . . so pink and so soft . . . and one day. . ." his hungry eyes looked into hers, so dark with desire that a shiver of surprise went through her, "my cock will be inside."
Yanaba didn't know what to say. She lowered her lashes.
"My princess . . . may I sniff --"
"No."
Pati turned to face her, and as they faced each other on the log, he scooted closer. Suddenly feeling naked and vulnerable, Yanaba hugged her big breasts, as if to hide them. Pati was still touching himself as he looked at her. He smiled at her warmly, and without warning, he kissed her hard on the mouth. Yanaba gulped on his tongue. He gave a choked cry that made their lips tremble, and she heard the slap of his cum. When they broke apart, his cum was sliding over the fist that held his cock. Yanaba tried not to show her revulsion.
Pati looked at her sheepishly. "Thank you for not . . . mocking my feelings."
"I would never!" Yanaba said at once.
"I don't care," he said helplessly, "if you never love me, if you can not love me. Take me wherever you go. I will love you and protect you."
Yanaba smiled at him sadly. "Goodnight, Pati."
"Goodnight," he said breathlessly, happily, "my princess."
The next morning, it occurred to Yanaba that she would likely lose her maidenhead to Pati unless she found someone to take it for her. The thought of Pati being the one to take her that first time . . . it alarmed her. She wanted him to produce heirs, certainly, but she wanted that first time to be special, and she knew that with Pati, it was not going to be special. With Pati, she was going to lie there stiffly while he kissed her and groped her and ultimately forced his way inside, causing pain and blood. No, she wanted that first time to be something she remembered forever. . . . not something she blocked out with ale.
Yanaba immediately thought of Tala and her heart skipped a beat. She had never desired Tala's cock, but the more she thought about properly losing her maidenhead, the more she found herself imagining tender kisses, whispers, Tala's green eyes - warm with affection - as she pushed inside her in the dark. Tala would be gentle and sweet. Tala's eyes would connect with her eyes, and there would be mutual affection there . . . even if there wasn't mutual love.
Then came the thought of Tala's breasts touching hers. And Tala's pussy. Yanaba had to admit that she had not been able to stop thinking about Tala's pussy. She would not allow Pati to lick her pussy, but Tala . . . Tala would go down on her, eat her out with that strong tongue, make her moan and sigh again. She wanted that affection and trust and warmth. With Tala, it would be intimacy. With Pati . . . it would be politics.
"Pati is on his best behavior," Yatokya said, dropping back beside Yanaba. "Why!"
They had been traveling the White Forest for days. The cliffs had ended in more forest as they continued steadily south. As they went, small white basins began to appear, nestled in the roots of various trees. Basins with bones in them. Yatokya had warned them repeatedly not to touch the bones.
Yanaba ignored her brother and rolled her eyes. Not this again. Yatokya had been badgering her for days about Pati. It was true that Pati had been on his best behavior: he stopped openly lusting and staring at Yanaba, and he never dared to kiss her again. But he also became ever more her constant shadow. He always found a way to be near her or beside her, as if - with their arrangement - his desire to protect her had intensified.
"Sa knows something, I can sense it," Yatokya went on darkly. "But he won't tell me a thing."
"Because he knows you'll act like a royal ass," Yanaba returned in a bored voice.
Yatokya scowled. "That you and Sa are keeping secrets from me is infuriating and absurd. Tell me what is going on! We tell each other everything!"
Yanaba sighed. "I have approached Pati about one day producing an heir --"
"What!" Yatokya almost bellowed.
Yanaba scowled. "Keep your voice down!"
Keme was walking some way ahead of them, and behind them walked Sa, followed up by Maka and Pati.
"You still think to marry a female," Yatokya said wearily and shook his head.
"It's been done before," Yanaba snapped. "The crow wolves have female rulers and they are respected. If they can do it, why can't I?"
Yatokya shook his head. "But did you have to pick Pati?"
Yanaba laughed at him. "Oh, so you're going to pick a male for me?"
"I could."
"Except you have inherited the summer lands, my brother. You are now summer wolf. Who rules in the land of the sun is no longer your concern."
"The hell it isn't."
"You focus on finding our Tala. Let me worry about the royal succession of the sun."
After a week and a half, the village of the lake tribe took shape in the distance, silhouetted against the stars and the inky black sky. Too tired to keep going, they camped again. Maka and Sa set about digging out a fire pit. They dug up bones.
"Don't touch them!" Yatokya cautioned at once.
Everyone gathered around the fire pit, staring at the white skulls that glared against the black soil embedding them. There was a startling amount of them, disturbingly large, piled in with femurs and pelvises. . . and there was a crystal. A frosty purple crystal poked from the earth, winking in the moonlight, the length of Yanaba's forearm.
". . . those aren't wolf skulls," Sa observed.
Maka swallowed hard. "Then what the hell are they?"
Yanaba was not surprised when everyone looked at Yatokya. Wolves always thought he knew everything, and most of the time, he did. This time, however, Yatokya was as clueless as everyone else: he shrugged.
Keme shouldered his traveling pack. "Then we should move on . . . Maka? What are you . . .?"
Maka was climbing down into the fire pit, eyes blazing.
"No!" Yatokya shouted. "Do not disturb the bones - stop him!"
Pati and Sa obediently leapt after Maka. Without even turning his head, Maka elbowed Sa in the face and he went down. Yatokya ran to him as Maka twisted free of Pati's grasp. He picked Pati up by the throat and sent him flying. Yanaba watched, astounded, as Pati soared through the air and hit a tree. More bones had been piled in a white basin under the tree, and when Pati fell, he scattered them.
Yanaba ran to Pati and helped him sit up. He smiled at her groggily to reassure her.
"No!" Yatokya was shouting. "Stop him! Stop him!"
Yanaba looked back and gasped. Yatokya was kneeling, helping Sa to sit up, while Keme staggered down into the fire pit. Maka stood at the bottom of the shallow pit with the crystal in his paws. It was glowing - so brightly that it lit his face from under, giving his grin a ghoulish tint. All around the fire pit, ghostly creatures had manifested. They stood eight, nine, ten feet tall, with large heads and paws, gaunt cheeks, and haunted eyes lit like candle flames. They had the feline faces of mountain lions, but they stood upright . . . like wolves.
As the crystal continued to glow, the grim specters moved in on the fire pit. Yanaba's heart was pounding. She pulled her sword and leapt up, ran to help Keme. He was struggling to get the crystal from Maka's paws, and apparently, touching the thing put him in a great deal of pain. He roared in agony as they fought over it, and Yanaba gasped to see smoke trailing from Keme's fingers.
Yanaba charged at the fire pit. She could see her brother barreling toward it as well. But just as she and Yatokya reached Keme, the summer chief managed to snatch the crystal from Maka, who collapsed at once. With heaving chest, Keme snapped the crystal in half. The light died immediately, and in snapping unison, the ghostly giants vanished.
Silence and panting followed.
Chest still heaving, Keme dropped the crystal shards and fell to a knee. Yanaba ran to him. He smiled at her and assured her he was fine, though his paws were burned severely. Before Yanaba could answer, she saw Yatokya scramble into the fire pit and grab Maka by the scruff. He started shaking him.
"What was it," roared Yatokya, "about 'do not touch' that you did not understand!"
Yanaba gasped, horrified: Maka's head was rolling like a ragdoll's, and his paws were burnt black. She frowned. "Stop it, Yato! Stop it!" She grabbed him by the shoulder and shook. "Can't you see that he's hurt!"
Yatokya stopped, startled. Maka was unconscious. Yatokya let him slump to the ground. Sa and Pati pulled Maka out of the fire pit and laid him in the grass. Yanaba helped Keme climb out, and after a long time, Yatokya followed.
"We have to . . . continue to . . . the village now," Keme panted. He shouldered his traveling pack again and picked up his spear.
"But what happened?" Pati wondered miserably. He clutched his sagging brother close. "What happened to Maka? His eyes . . . it was like he was possessed!"
"I believe he was," Yatokya said quietly, grimly. "I didn't realize it at first . . ." he added, glancing apologetically at Pati. "The spirits . . . they wanted him to do something with that crystal."
"What were they?" Yanaba wondered breathlessly.
"Forgive me, your highness," said Sa, looking shaken as he gathered his spear, "but I do not care. We can speculate once we're out of this cursed forest!"
Keme smiled. "Couldn't have said it better myself."
