Chapter 12.

"Is he really...?" Blackpaw asked Loran as the Foxen was kneeling over Skip, his paw pushed up against the fallen Beast's neck.

Loran kept his paw still, though he already knew the result before he even tried. The Blood Magic he had used on the fox wouldn't have worked if he had survived. Even so, he held still for a good half a minute before he shook his head.

"He's gone..." He said softly and slowly stood back up.

Blackpaw stood next to him, silently mourning the otter he had only known before nearly seven years ago.

"Death seems so inviting." He thought to himself as he stared down upon the still Beast before him, before he heard that whispering voice in his ears.

He started to gaze about, trying to locate the source of the voice. It sounded a lot like Liki, but the wolf was no where to be seen.

Loran rimaced, remembering the words that his brother had hinted at.

"Oh, the Shadows aren't defending him from this torture."

Liki sat cross legged inside the leather tent that had always once served as home to him and his Master when they had both been alive. The old shelter, though it looked just as worn down and beaten as it had the day he had left the island, still was holding up even here in this world.

The Shadow watched his Master in front of him, who was also sitting legs crossed, meditating a moment, eyes closed in relaxed concentration. Liki wiggled slightly, looking back and forth anxiously as he waited and Uriay spoke lightly to him.

"Still as impatient as ever." He chuckled lightly and Liki scowled at him a moment, wanting to say something about how he was worried about the state of Heartwood and his friends right now, but he held his tongue out of the respect he held for Uriay.

"Master..." Liki started eventually as more silence crept on, "I need to know, what do I do?"

"Nothing." Uriay answered, "There is nothing you can do here to affect the living world Liki."

"There must be something Master!" Liki shouted and his paws clenched into fists at the frustration he felt inside him. He had hoped for a different answer from his teacher than what he had been getting from everyone else.

Uriay's eyes opened, staring at his student who was now leaning towards him, lips curled up in a slight snarl and paws clenching pawfuls of the clothing used as the tent's floor.

"There...there has to be something! Anything!"

Uriay sighed deeply, "There is nothing you can do Liki...you cannot assist the living from here."

Liki continued to snarl and clench, but eventually, he slumped back to his normal sitting position, feeling defeated.

"That is not to mean...that you cannot do things here that can help you help them."

The younger wolf's ears perked, "What do you mean?"

"It means." A voice answered as Death swept in through the tent suddenly, his scythe opening up the tent as he peered in, "That you must use your time here to better yourself, so that if you are able to return to the living, you can help them better than you can before."

Liki peered at Death, the Feline's hood was up, hiding his face once more in inky darkness, but then, what set him off was who followed close behind him. A male Aquari, completely naked just as Liki was, stood behind the large looming figure of Death.

"Liki...?" The Aquari lifted an eyebrow slightly, then chuckled, "Ha, never thought to see you again. Guess Loran failed in his job if you're here..."

"What?! SKIP!?" Liki rose up quickly, bumbling out of the tent only to trip on the cloth of and end up face first in the dirt just outside it, tail falling limp as he laid still in shock.

Before he could recover, Jaklya's voice now shouted out, "Skip?" She stood not far off from the tent, and as the two otters saw each other, Death moved out of the way before the female tackled the male to the ground.

"I thought I would never see you again!" She screamed as they tumbled onto the ground.

"Jakky...?" Skip was still rather confused it seemed.

It took a few tries to manage to pry Jaklya away from Skip, and for Liki to manage to recover from his fall, before they were able to sit inside the tent once more.

"What did you mean?" Liki asked quickly, "That Loran failed?"

"Well...I mean, he told me you had a few days left to live, and I just died. The fact that you're here must mean you died and he failed...right?" The otter tilted his head slightly.

"Time here has no meaning, actually." Death told them both. "We are stuck in a certain point of time, and while the sun may rise and the moon may fall, time here does not progress as it does in the living world." Death stated.

"Then you DO know what the future will bring!" Liki pointed at the Feline, grinning. "If time here is at a standstill, and this world houses all souls who die, present or future or past, you are able to tell if we die!"

Death shook his head slowly, "That is not what I meant. I can't tell when you are going to die, I cannot tell you when you are going to be revived or even if you will stay dead...what I meant by that was subjectively speaking, a day in this world can be a decade in the living, or a millenia, or even just one day. There is no way to tell."

Liki's eyes narrowed, "So there is no way of telling when I may be revived?"

Death shook his head again once more, "Nope," He chuckled lifting a paw, "You could be revived a day from now, two, three, four, it could take up to ten years. Similarly, it could be in the next ten minutes."

Liki scowled longer, and Death said, "Hey, remember when I said you're a special case, I don't deal with this stuff often, I don't understand how it all works. You'd have to go to Gaia for a more direct answer of 'when'"

The wolf's eyes lit up in interest, "Gaia? It's possible to visit her here?"

"Yes." Uriay answered this time instead, "I've seen her myself as well, it was one of the first things I did..."

"Why?"

"Cause I wanted to yell at her..." Uriay sighed, "I wanted to scold her for what she was putting you through as a Shadow, how her will took Uni away."

"What did she say to that?" Liki asked lightly, ears slightly falling flat to his head.

"She...well she said a lot." Was all Uriay said, the wolf dropping his gaze and sighing again, "It'd all probably be better for you to find out yourself than for me to tell you."

"How do I find Gaia?"

"That's a quest of an undertaking." Death said, "Not everyone gets to just go see Gaia...only battle hardened warriors who still know what it's like to fight in real life get that honor. There's two ways you can earn an audience with her."

Death lifted a paw out from the sleave of his cloak, lifting a finger, "One, is that you simply find her. She hides her Groove somewhere in this world, moving it whenever someone stumbles or discovers it."

"Two, is you earn it by fighting in the Gladiator Tournaments. You have to defeat her chosen champions in the arena."

"That sounds easy." Liki said, "I bet I could win through it easily enough."

"It's not that easy." Uriay chuckled, "Alone, sure you could, but you don't fight alone. You need a group of four, the battles are four on four."

"Group of four?" Liki whined and he slumped again. "Which one did you do Master?"

"I tried the tournament, but I lost against her champions, I didn't know my companions and our chemistry was the best. So instead, I scoured the world for a few years...ending up finding the entrance as an oasis in a desert in the middle of nowhere, barely even realized it before I was suddenly in her realm."

"So the best bet to getting to see her is by fighting her champions huh?" Liki said, "I mean, I'm at least hoping I won't be stuck here for years...time being subjective or not."

The wolf scratched his head, "Well then...I guess I need to find three team members..."

"Well I know one thing." Skip blurted out, "I'm going! That's that! So you got one."

Liki chuckled, "Okay then I'd need two more..."

"Us! Duh!" Uni and then Jaklya both popped their heads into the tent, glaring at both of their male companions as they had both been listening just outside the tent. "If you think we're going to let you jump into that arena without us at your sides you're both crazy!"

"Nah uh no way!" Skip started, "That's too dangerous for ya-"

"Shut it, Skip!" Jaklya shouted.

"Liki..." Jaklya said softly to the wolf as they were leaving the tent, she pulled him off to the side, the others continued to walk towards the Wolfspirit house to turn in for the day.

"Huh?" Liki blinked as she pulled him by the paw to a spot behind the tree by the tent.

"I knew there was something familiar about you when I first saw ya, just couldn't put my finger on it." She said first before letting go of his paw and she shuffled a bit in front of him, "Well...ya know, after coming here and what not, I remembered everything about who I was and what I was doing before I died..."

"I just..." She started slowly and took a deep breath, "Just wanted to say sorry for like, trying to kill you and everything and also to thank you for freeing Skip from the same fate..."

Liki blinked softly and he smiled a moment, "Skip vanished after the battle of Earthend. Often I would wonder what he was doing, and it turns out, the whole time he had been trying to get revenge." he shrugged, "I wish he hadn't chosen that path. He's been alone a long time..."

"No Beast should be alone." Jaklya nodded and she smiled as well, before her smile turned into a sneer and she slide past him, her paw purposely groping the still naked wolf by the balls. Blackpaw had apparently given control of the group to Loran, but being that Blackpaw was a Shadow, he was able to continue with the fox as they traveled to the distant mountains across the dry desert. It took a full day of walking to reach them, the sun had settled and the moon was high in the air, leaving a chill in the air as the desert climate changed dramatically to the time of day.

"It looked so much closer when we had started." Blackpaw grumbled as he looked up and down the mountain ranges, then to the pathway in front of them that seemed to lead up and into the rocky cliffs.

"Is there another facility here?" He asked then, looking to his companion.

Loran nodded, "Yes, there are only two others in this region that Salvis could be holding Liki. One of them is located here, the other one is located farther down the mountains, closer to the sea."

"Wouldn't he be there don't you think? Closer to the water?"

"Maybe, but this one was the closer of the two, and time of of the essence. If they are not here, then we will depart for the last one right away." Loran explained as he started to scale the pathway. He felt that surreal feeling wash over him again, as memories led him along the rocks to find the entrance to the facility. What would he find here he wondered, was Liki here, or maybe something else from his past he didn't remember?
