#5 of The Making of a Wasteland

Ehh... I know it's been a while since I've written a chapter of this, but I have [No] valid excuse as to why I haven't written, Just being lazy I guess. The problem for me is getting started writing, after that hours of enjoyment (and random awkward erections) happen... hope this chapter was worth the unnecessary wait. I always like the violent chapters :P

For the next week or so Anna and I got in the routine of waking up, "playing around" a little bit, taking a shower, getting some breakfast, and then doing whatever we really wanted until dinner, in which we spent at the same old diner we had went to quite a few times. When we didn't go out, Rose had invited us to eat with her and Phil, and we would; I actually may have started to warm up to them.

As you may expect though, with the cost of the room and food, the large quantity of money I had "acquired" was diminishing. I finally started to notice it when I had to scrap together singles just to manage the check.

"Hey Anna, you may have to start staying with Rose during the day..." I said, whilst we walked down the every so familiar path back from the diner.

"Why's that?" Anna responded, questioningly.

"We're running out of money and I'll have to get a job to support us," I responded.

Anna stopped abruptly, causing me too as well considering her hand was in mine, "I can work too! You don't have to do it all."

I chuckled, and patted her head gently, "Anna, I'm your big brother, I can handle it."

"Okay," She responded hesitantly, practically hinting that we'd argue about this again at a later time.

We arrived back at the room pretty soon after, and after a just a few affectionate nuzzles and kisses, we headed down to the lobby to talk to Rose.

Over the week we had been there we had begun spending more and more time with Rose and Phil, and I actually began to like them. Rose was really kind hearted, and Phil was kinda a dick, but in the way that he really wasn't, if that makes any sense.

Within a few moments we were down in the lobby, standing in front of the check in desk. Anna and I were both shorter than the counter, and standing on my tippy toes I could just barely see over the counter.

The older Vixen noticed me, and with a smile she said, "Hey Miles, Anna, good to you see you kids, so what can I do ya for?"

I straightened my posture, and tried to present myself as as much of an adult as I could, "Hey um Rose, could you maybe watch Anna during the day sometimes; I'm tryin to find a job, and it'd worry me if she was alone. I'll even pay if you want."

"Sure, why not, but keep your money, and Annie you can be my little assistant on those days." I thanked her, quite a lot actually, and unhappily for me, you have to look for a job to get a job, so I left Anna with Rose and searched around.

Since we were around the outskirts of a city, the only kinda jobs available were at little stores, gas stations, and the outlet mall Anna and I had visited.

To start with, I went to the book store; after all, I liked books, so why not get a job focusing on them?

I walked in the moderate to small store; the shelves filled with books, the same as they had been the other day. I strolled over to the counter to see a lady reading a book.

The book store probably was very seldom busy and since I was shorter than the counter, I had to speak up to get her attention.

"Excuse me ma'am," I called out, just barely shorter than the counter. She looked up from her book (Which happened to be named "The Fault In Our Stars").

"Is this store hiring?" I asked, hoping deep down that it was, and that I just may be able to spend my days buried in a book.

"Gotta be 18," Was all she said in response, before I could say anything she had already turned her attention back to her book.

I walked out of the store, a bit disheartened, and now instead went in the toy store beside it. When I walked in I expected the warm greeting of the old man that was there last time, however now there was a much younger guy behind the counter.

"Hey are you hiring?" I asked as I reached the counter, this one was quite a bit shorter, so I could see over it easily. "*Sigh* why must my grandfather make me work here to be in his inheritance? No we're not hiring, even if we were we wouldn't hire a scrawny brat such as yourself."

At that point I contemplated flipping him off or just something along those lines, but instead I left and went on to yet another store. Store after store, it was pretty much the same; everyone would just stress the fact that I was a kid and deny me.

After all the let downs maybe an hour had passed since I left, and instead of going straight back, I sat down on a bench, on the sidewalk.

As I say there, I thought of what I might do. After all we were running out of money, and I had to get a job so we could stay afloat, but I couldn't even do that.

While I was sitting there a black limo pulled up immediately in front of me. The window rolled down and a older greyish wolf stuck his head out, "Hey kid, heard you were looking for work, if you want I've got an offer."

The door to the limo opened, prompting me to get in, and I know it was against any good judgment, but I was desperate.

I climbed in; the seats were a dark leather, and the wolf was wearing a fancy suit; he probably had more money than I had ever seen.

"Driver please drive us to the drop off point," the man said, and the engine started up. We sat there for a while, the man had pulled out a briefcase and upon opening it removed a few papers.

"So what kind of work will I be doing?" I asked earnestly, after all it wasn't like it were peculiar for a man to pick a child off the street for some sort of job.

"Miles, my boy, you will be helping me with the dubious affairs of the underground," he responded, leaving me confused and also had I ever told him my name?

"How do you know my name, and what do you mean by underground?" I responded, more interested by the man than creeped out.

"Since you're obviously somewhat intelligent, I won't sugar coat it. Miles, in our fair city, I am what any self respecting citizen would see as a success, someone to be looked up to, but of course being an average business man is getting harder and harder nowadays.

Miles, do you know what cocaine is? Maybe crystal meth? Marajuna perhaps? I control the trade of all within the city and beyond, and if you were to follow in my footsteps then I just might cut you in."

The older wolf's monologue left me questioning as to what I might do next. First of all I had to know more about what I was in for.

"Why me though, after all I'm just a kid." I responded.

"Very true Miles, very true. I just must say you're probably the only child to have a handgun on your side, and I'd suggest that instead of questioning my motives, that instead you should be grateful that I'm giving you such an opportunity." The man responded, and nearing the end of his explanation his tone became more stern, making me feel like a son he was scolding.

I didn't say anything else for a while, and he was on his phone probably reading emails or something, and eventually his phone started to ring.

"What is it?"

"Again?"

"I warned you, Keith."

"There will be repercussions."

He then proceeded to hang up the phone, and looked over to see me staring at him.

"Sorry about that Miles, just business," The man responded before insincerely looking back at his cellphone.

The car ride was quite dull, the man spent the majority of time on his phone, taking to various people about different businesses and jobs.

The limo eventually stopped at a big hotel, the kind that you see but never expect to stay at, and then the driver came around and opened his door. He climbed out before turning to me, "I'll be back in a minute, just have to pick something up."

He then proceeded to walk in the front door of the hotel, his head held as high as the sky; I'd come to hate the bastard, but for the moment I just sat there and did what he said.

Quite a few minutes passed-somewhere between 10 and 20-before the wolf returned; now he carried a briefcase and was accompanied by 2 men, both of which in suits just like his. They all piled into the back of the limo, the "boss" next to me and the other guys across from us. It took the 2 other guys mere moments to notice me, and both shared similar reactions of laughter.

"Boss, who the fucks that brat?" One of the 2 guys rattled off, and then the other quickly added, "Didn't know we were that desperate for members!" They laughed for a few moments before the boss raised his hand and the driver pulled over. In a mere instant there was a gun barrel pointed at each of the men's heads, and in that instant both of them turned as white as ghosts.

"Gentlemen, I believe our newest compatriot, Miles, deserves your respect and an apology, and as a warning if either of you, or any other members of our exclusive 'club' decide to bother my new apprentice... Well I believe you know what's in order." Throughout his speech the men's eyes never diverted from his, and perhaps the scariest part of it all was that his voice held the same calm tone. He then nonchalantly put both of the guns back into his jacket, presumably where they came from, and patted some acquired dirt from his overcoat, "I think an apology is still in order."

"Sorry," both of the men responded in unison, neither trying in the slightest to hide their insincerity.

The boss sighed deeply before giving the guy on the right a hard fist to the gut, making him elicit a painful groan, "Why am I always surrounded by idiots? Now try it again, but this time get down on your fucking knees and really apologize. I really wouldn't test me with this... HURRY THE FUCK UP!"

In a time span of about 2 seconds both of the grown men were on their knees on the floor of the limo apologizing over and over again until the boss finally spoke up, "That should be enough boys, and Miles, if either of these guys, hell if anyone, decides to bother you just come to me and I'll solve the problem in the most effective way possible."

I nodded at the guy, quite afraid of him myself at this point, and i couldn't help but smirk at the guys across from me. They must have noticed because both of them started to glare at me, but neither of them made any move to say or do anything.

"Did my threats fall on death ears? Please don't kill the boy with those ugly faces of yours," The boss said, weirdly enough not even looking up from his phone.

"But boss the little basta-err I mean he's grinning at us," Mr. Left responded, before looking over at Mr. Right who just stayed quiet (probably not fancying another shot to the gut, or worse.

"We both know that if it were the same scenario and you were in his shoes, you would so the same thing, now that's hypocrisy, and I absolutely hate hypocrisy."

"Sorry boss," Mr. Left mumbled before actually doing the smart thing and shutting his mouth. The boss waved his hand again and the limo started moving again. The rest of the ride was really uneventful; neither of the guys would even look in my direction, which made taunting them ineffective, so I just sat there and took everything in. I was in the back of a limo with people I hadn't know more than an hour at most, and it felt pretty damn good that the boss was taking my side.

At that point I began to like the idea of being part of a gang, I always liked the idea of being some badass and being in a gang kinda put you there. For the rest of the ride I continued to think of cool things that could come, but we eventually arrived at some abandoned looking building, and based on all the movies I assumed a deal was about to go down.

As before, the driver came around and opened the boss's door and he climbed out, followed by me, and then the two men-who I assume where afraid to even be in proximity of me. I followed close behind the boss, at that point I felt that he was the safest thing around me. We made our way around the building to find a van and quite a few people standing around it. One of the men stepped out from the crowd and walked up to the boss smiling.

"How are you my friend?" The man asked excitedly as they shook hands.

"I'm doing quite alright, how about you Antonio?" The boss responded, his face now displaying a small smile.

"Very bueno, señor." He responded back, "but we are not here for small talk."

"I agree, now let's get down to business," The boss responded, before handing the briefcase he held in his other hand. The man took it from him and opened it. The rat (forgot to mention he was a rat) dipped a finger in the case, and brought it out covered in a white powdery substance. He then proceeded to sniff it feverishly, before sighing in deep relief, "I remember the days... This stuff is quality. Here is your money, I hope for continued business."

The rat handed the boss a briefcase similar in design to the other, and he unclasped the case and opened it. In that single case was probably more money than I had ever seen in my entire life. The boss picked through every set of bills counting all of them before turning to his good friend and smiling graciously at him, "We'll continue to do business as long as your rates stay this high."

"It may be a bit rude of me to pry, but what is up with the niño? Never known you to be a kid person. If you want I could take him off your hands for a good price, a cutey like him wouldn't have any problems finding a new home." The rat responded before licking his lips, at that point I was creeped out and my hand was now resting on the handgun. The boss must have known what I was about to do, because he put a hand on my shoulder and shook his head.

"The niño is my new apprentice and his name is Miles, and I'm sorry my friend, but I'm sure that we'd both rather he be in my care than having his ass prodded by some rich fellow. I take me leave now" The boss put his hand on my shoulder and guided me back to the limo, and then we were off down the same road in which we came.

"Sorry about Antonio, He deals with types of business that even make me shudder. I promise you that I'll never leave you in his care." The boss said reassuringly, "and now that the jobs over I guess the pays are in order."

He opened the briefcase of bills and took out a banded stack of money and handed it to me, and he took out a second one and broke the paper seal before splitting the stack in half and splitting it between Mr. Left and Right.

"What the fuck boss?! Why does the pipsqueak get more than us. We been in your service way longer than that little shit!" Mr. Left ranted angrily.

"I see that I miscounted the pay, thank you for pointing it out," Mr. Left smiled in triumph at me, but was quickly disappointed when the bills that were once in his hand were now on their way to mine. That really enraged the guy, and now I had a Magnum to my forehead.

"Don't test me boss, I'll shoot!" The bastard yelled, and the boss didn't pay any mind to him, "Didn't you fucking hear me, you arrogant son of a bitch, I'll kill the kid."

The boss sighed deeply and turned to the guy, "Oh no you're such a badass, you can kill a little boy, is that what you want me to say? It's kinda pathetic actually, but I won't stop you... I mean you're practically dead and I don't even have to get my hands dirty."

During all of the commotion I had drawn my gun, and the gun now rested under the man's chin. He noticed just a second too late and with a loud bang the ceiling became a canvas for blood splatter. The boss patted me on the back before chuckling.

"He never saw that coming! Anyone else have any complaints about Miles?" The other guy shook his head ferociously, "Well isn't that good, now let's hope everyone can just get along!"

I sat there silently not really knowing what I was feeling. It felt so unreal; I had just taken another life, granted the guy was scum that no one would miss, and I felt no sympathy for him. In the moment the entire ride after that felt hazy, it felt like I was dreaming, but I knew I wasn't. I knew that it had all really happened and that down this path it'd happen time and time again, but it really started not to bother me.

I'm not sure how long the ride was, but it seemed like I was instantly being dropped off at the hotel. I watched for a second as the limo drove off, before turning around and walking towards the stairs. Before even making it inside I heard another bang. Seems that Mr. Right didn't make it either.
