Chapter 13
#13 of The Mating Season: A Life of Dreams
Chapter 13
"So . . ." Yaholo cleared his throat nervously. "That stuff Enya said about ripping our nuts off . . ."
Zane laughed. "She was jokin' . . . kinda."
Yaholo looked visibly relieved, and Yuri smiled to think he had actually been frightened of his cousin. Before the three of them left, Enya warned Zane and Yaholo to keep their grubby paws off Yuri or else. Zane had laughed at the threat, but Yaholo - who had not known Enya more than a day - had been cowed by the glint in her blue eyes.
"She was joking," Yuri assured Yaholo firmly. "She wouldn't hurt you . . ." She glanced at the staff the boy carried and bit her lip as the senselessness of her words came back on her.
Yaholo laughed and rubbed the sore spot on his head. "I beg to differ."
The three of them were walking up the street, heading for the docks where Kuza had been left that morning. Yuri walked between Zane and Yaholo and silently wondered if anyone had found poor Kuza. He'd been left there - bound and gagged - for hours. His ship had probably left without him, never realizing until it was too late that he wasn't aboard.
"What do you mean by that?" Zane wondered, shattering Yuri's thoughts. His brows shot up when Yuri and Yaholo went beet red. "Alright - halt!" Zane held out his big arm and regarded the two in the fading sunlight.
Yuri bit her lip and squirmed under Zane's staring. "It was nothing," she said, suddenly scowling. "Alright? Now let's go --" She tried to move past Zane but his big paw clamped on her narrow waist. She knew he'd taken any excuse to touch her and shoved his paw off.
"Why did Enya hit you?" Zane said to Yaholo. "What happened?" He looked at Yuri suspiciously, who was refusing to meet his eye.
"I . . . kissed her," Yaholo said guiltily.
Zane's nostrils flared like a bull. "You what!"
Yuri screamed softly when Zane grabbed Yaholo by the throat and slammed him against the nearest wall - which happened to be someone's house. Several shocked strangers appeared in the window above as Zane shook Yaholo hard. Yaholo was trembling. He dropped his staff, looking at Zane in amazement.
"Zane!" Yuri scolded behind him. "Stop it - put him down!"
Indeed, Yaholo's feet were not touching the ground. He dangled helplessly, but Yuri didn't like it when he slowly scowled.
"I warn you, friend," Yaholo hissed, "I will be forced to use magic --"
"Try it!" Zane dared. "I'll snap your neck before you can blink!"
Yuri saw light crackling on Yaholo's paws and her eyes widened. "No!" she shrieked, and lunging forward, she snatched up Yaholo's staff and pointed it. Light blasted from the gnarled branches, and Zane and Yaholo were smacked apart. Zane fell hard on his backside. Yaholo slid down the wall and dropped to his knees with a cry. Both males looked up at Yuri, who stood over them, sable eyes glinting.
"Zane, you will stop acting foolish. Yaholo didn't know who I was --"
"That doesn't excuse --!"
"And what's more, it is none of your business who I kiss!"
"It's my business," Zane snarled, lurching to his feet. He pointed angrily at Yaholo, "When someone messes with Enya! It's my business when someone kisses you --!" He halted and bit his lip.
Yuri looked away and felt her cheeks getting hotter.
Yaholo had gotten to his feet and was smirking. "So it's true," he said, massaging his throat as he watched them in amusement. "Enya's wife-to-be has slept with both her cousins. And almost a third one." He smiled at Yuri.
"I would never," Yuri snarled, shoving Yaholo's staff into his chest, "sleep with you!"
Yaholo staggered and caught the staff, but he smiled his slow and handsome smile. "You were wet, Yuri. I still smell it on my fingers --"
"Shut up!" Yuri shrieked, blushing bright.
Zane scowled. "You let him touch you?" he said, gesturing angrily at Yaholo. "Him!"
"It wasn't her fault," Yaholo said, his pretty eyes still watching Yuri's embarrassment in amusement. He frowned. "She had this staff . . . this weird staff. I think it . . . was doing something to her."
Zane looked at Yuri anxiously. "Is that true?"
Yuri folded her arms and looked away. The way Zane was looking at her, she felt as if she'd cheated on her husband! But he wasn't just angry; he was frightened for her too.
"Yes," she answered, not looking at either of them. "The staff was pushing me to disregard my better judgment . . . Sort of the way you get drunk at family gatherings, Zane."
Zane scratched his ears. "Yeah, well . . . as long as you're alright. Come on." He jerked his head at the street. "Let's get out of here before the owners of this house scalp us."
Yuri followed Zane's gaze and her heart leapt a beat: three angry males had stormed down the front steps and were standing there glaring at them.
"Get the fuck off my lawn!" one yelled.
The three young wolves hurried away and resumed their journey to the docks. Yuri walked between Zane and Yaholo once more, feeling miserable and embarrassed. She knew the staff had only acted on her inner desires, things she would not dare to do otherwise. Using it had indeed been very akin to inebriation. She was starting to wonder if Enya wasn't right about her. She knew she liked males as much as females . . . but did that mean she secretly longed to be with a male again?
Yuri glanced at Zane, who was watching her sullenly as they walked along. She glanced at his cock - his large, pink cock hanging so soft and smelling so - Yuri quickly averted her eyes. Only a year ago, she had known Zane inside her even while Enya was touching her, even while Enya was there kissing her and holding her. Having them both in one bed had been heaven, and she had secretly wished to have them both forever. If only it could be. She looked at Zane and knew he still cared about her, had always cared about her, even if she didn't feel the same.
"So the staff is destroyed now, right?" Zane said after some time. "I saw the pieces back at the house. I was gonna ask . . ."
"It shouldn't work any longer," Yaholo confirmed. "The crystal was cracked."
Zane nodded. "Good." He glanced anxiously at Yuri and whispered to himself, "Good."
Yuri cast him a furtive glance and knew he was thinking of the battle on the cliff, the rage she'd unleashed on the mountain wolves . . . the twitching limbs and heads in pools of dark blood. Her powers frightened him. Her powers frightened everyone. And the staff . . . it would have pushed her power to its max. She thought of Zaldon and how she'd managed to avoid his oncoming lecture for the time being. When she returned to his house, there would be no avoiding him, however.
"You seem to know a lot about this stuff," Zane said to Yaholo, and Yuri knew he was trying to be friendly, trying to make up for his violent outburst of only moments before. "I mean . . ." he shrugged. "I know you're a sorcerer or something. So what's with all the tattoos and . . ." He waved a paw, indicating Yaholo's wild curls.
"One day," Yaholo said smugly, proudly, "I will be leader of my tribe, those of the river. My bloodline is descended from the great sorceress Imani."
"Hey . . ." Zane blinked. "We're related!"
Yuri laughed. "What!"
"Uncle Zaldon said," explained Zane, sounding amazed, "that my family comes from a long line of sorcerers in the winter village - descendants of Eldan, the son of Imani." He looked at Yaholo with wide eyes. "So you're like . . . my distant, distant relative or something!"
Yaholo laughed. "I guess I am."
"No wonder Zane hates you then," Yuri said, amused. "He doesn't get along with Roan either. Or Enya . . . or anyone except Wynn. Weren't you fighting with LiAnh too?"
"No . . ." Zane said sheepishly.
Yaholo grinned and shook his head. "How does one fight with an infant?"
"Don't underestimate him," Zane said dully. "LiAnh's just a baby, but he has his ways. I was holding him earlier and he bit me!"
"Maybe you smell like candy," Yaholo said.
They laughed.
They had come to the docks at last. Dusk was still falling pink and purple across the sky. Stars winked in the inky black that crept beyond the edge of the clouds, and the breeze was salty and cool in their fur. They passed along the rows of docked ships, ignoring the lusty sailors who eyed them or shouted derogatory things. One male made the mistake of wagging his tongue at Yuri and got his lights knocked out by Zane. As the male collapsed on his back, his friends looked at Zane furiously, but seeing his height and girth, they hesitated - then suddenly ran.
Yuri led the others through the maze of crates, and after coming to a dead end, was ashamed to find Kuza lying there, his face streaked with tears. His eyes widened when he saw them and he cringed into a ball. His legs were still stained with urine, and the smell on the breeze was revolting. The wind hit them, and they groaned in unison. Perhaps the smell alone had kept wolves from coming his way.
"Geez," Zane said, pinching his nose with large fingers. He eyed Yuri. "What'd you do to him?"
"I didn't do anything!" Yuri protested. "Theo scared the piss out of him . . . literally."
Yaholo stepped forward, his swirling blue-green eyes fixed on the cringing male. He tipped his staff, and the binds of light holding Kuza disintegrated. Kuza stiffened as it happened, as if he thought Yaholo was going to hurt him. When he realized he was free, he sat up and stared at his paws - then he stared at Yaholo with his mouth open. He was awestruck.
Yuri smiled. She could only imagine what Yaholo looked like to Kuza: tall, slender, and handsome, covered in white tattoos, his wild blue curls haloed by the setting sun. Yaholo probably looked like some sort of god stepping down to save him. Kuza didn't even seem to notice Yuri and Zane anymore.
Yaholo smiled kindly and offered his paw. Kuza took it, and with his mouth still hanging open, he allowed Yaholo to help him up. He sniffed and absently dragged his wrist under his nose. Yuri and Zane glanced at each other: eww.
"Who - who are you?" Kuza said hoarsely. He glanced for the first time at Yuri and Zane, and his eyes shone with fear to see Yuri. He trembled slightly. "You!" He backed away and his back hit the crates. "I promise I won't tell anyone what you did! I promise!"
"It won't matter," Yuri said apologetically. "Your ship left without you."
Kuza's eyes went small with horror. ". . . shit."
Yaholo peered at Kuza breathlessly. "I'm rather glad it did."
Kuza looked at him slowly . . . and smiled a goofy, absentminded smile.
They made their way back to Zaldon's house, and because Kuza had no where to go - and because he seemed loath to leave Yaholo's side - they invited him home for supper. Yuri and Zane led the way, shaking their heads in amazement that Yaholo and Kuza seemed completely absorbed in each other.
"He was covered in piss!" Zane cried. He glanced at Yuri incredulously. "Piss!" he repeated, tossing his big paws. "And yet, Yaholo is all over him!" Zane glanced back: Yaholo and Kuza were walking behind them, holding paws as they talked happily. Yaholo had used magic to clean the urine from Kuza, who walked with the taller boy, looking shy but happy and glowing.
"I'll never understand tail chasers," Zane said under his breath.
Yuri rolled her eyes. "It's not because they're tail chasers."
Zane snorted. "I would never pick up a girl who was covered in piss. Mora and Nyssa can't even smell like sweat or I'm grossed out."
"I'm sure I smelled like sweat a couple times and you didn't care."
Zane glanced at Yuri fondly. "You could smell like shit, Yuri. I'd still fuck you."
Yuri blushed. "Anyway," she said pointedly and ignored it when Zane laughed at her. "Their attraction has nothing to do with them liking males - wait . . ."
Zane laughed. "You mean, them being drawn to each other - regardless of pissy smells - has nothing to do with being tail chasers."
"Exactly. It's just love, Zane. You see something in someone and you're drawn . . . and you can't look away." Yuri sighed, thinking of Enya. She caught herself and glanced sheepishly at Zane, who was watching her in amusement. "Why are you so shocked by it anyway?" she demanded, suddenly irritable. "Don't you feel that way about Mora and Nyssa?"
"No," Zane said simply and shrugged.
Yuri looked at him, her eyes scolding.
"I love them," Zane went on. "But the first time I saw them, I wasn't struck by lightning. I only felt that way about . . ."
Me, Yuri thought miserably. She was glad when Zaldon's house came into view. She cleared her throat and walked ahead faster. She felt Zane's big paw smooth playfully down her tail and she glanced back to find him smiling at her.
"It's alright, Yuri," he said. "I still love you and I'll always love you. Don't let it make you feel . . . bad."
Yuri's eyes softened. She came to Zane, and bouncing up on tiptoe, she kissed his cheek. Her heart fluttered when his large fingers touched her lips, but he cleared his throat and moved past her into the house. Yuri was glad when Yaholo and Kuza pretended not to see the exchange. She and the boys followed Zane.
Inside, everyone was already sitting down to supper. The long table in the dining room was laden with glossy meats and vegetables, twinkling wine glasses and bottles of wine. The entire family was already seated. Yuri gasped to see an enormous fish lying picturesque in the center of the table. Julyan was standing over it and carving it up to pass around. Ah. So this had been the secret cooking project. It looked delicious!
Yuri was happy to see Julyan's sister Ceara had come, and Theo was sitting happily beside Sade and Amrosa, while on his other side, Roan was sitting beside Lea. Kilyan sat between Lea and Ohana, and across from him, Keeno sat with Zalia, Yzlo, Hye, and Hris - who Yuri had learned was Yaholo's father. Zaldon sat at the end of the table with Kel, Aliona, and Ceara. Loryn and Kira were not far, while Wynn sat across from Lea and beside Inden, discreetly slipping her peas onto his plate. Enya was on Wynn's other side and laughingly slapped her paw. Yuri was glad to see a place had been saved for her beside Enya.
Mora and Nyssa had also saved a place for Zane. He lumbered into the room and greeted everyone loudly. His mother greeted him with a joke that sent laughter erupting at the table. Yuri watched fondly as Zane leaned down to kiss Mora and Nyssa on their cheeks - who giggled girlishly as he took a seat between them. He reached over and ruffled one of his sons' heads: Mio and Zee were sitting on Lynny and Idella's laps, each sharing a plate with their grandparents.
Yuri took her seat beside Enya and smiled when Theo and Kilyan stiffened to see Kuza. Yaholo introduced Kuza to the family, and there was scrambling as Yzlo went to get a chair for Kuza and everyone shuffled to make space for him. Kuza shyly took a seat, but everyone was so warm and friendly that he fell to easy conversation and seemed to completely forget he was surrounded by total strangers.
"Who the hell?" Enya whispered to Yuri. Her eyes were fixed on Kuza, who was laughing eagerly at something Ohana was saying.
Yuri took a long and weary drink from her glass. "It's a long story," she said, staring dully a moment.
"And you'll tell me everything," Enya added, looking at her. "Starting with the staff and Roan and what really happened to him --"
"Eat those peas, girl!" Kilyan barked across the table at Wynn. LiAnh was in his lap, and the infant stuck his tongue out at Wynn when she pouted.
Wynn glared at LiAnh and threw a discreet pea at him. He wailed when it hit him in the eye.
"Wynn!" Lea scolded, taking her screaming son from Kilyan.
"Wynn - to the kitchen. Take your plate," Kilyan ordered.
Looking very smug and triumphant, Wynn elegantly rose from her chair and took up her plate with a defiant jerk of her chin. She sauntered from the room with her father's scolding eyes on her back.
"If you spanked her," Kel said to Kilyan, "she might straighten up a bit more."
Beside him, Aliona rolled her eyes. "Oh Kel! You spanked Zalia and look what good it did!"
Everyone laughed: Zalia had defied her parents and slept with Keeno. Zalia and Keeno were sitting side by side, and hearing Kel and Aliona, they smiled at each other and kissed.
"Ew!" LiAnh cried.
"Got that right," muttered Enya to her plate.
"You say ew now," laughed Loryn, "but one day Kilyan will be whipping your tail for falling on some girl." He winked at Kilyan.
Lea laughed when Kilyan looked uncomfortable.
"Ew!" LiAnh repeated defiantly.
"No," Kilyan said, shaking his head. He chewed and swallowed. "My baby will never grow up. He'll stay small and fat and innocent forever."
"If only they did," Sade added, glancing at Theo.
LiAnh giggled and banged his paws on the table. Lea's glass shook and she scolded him.
"Remind me why you and Roan want a kid again?" Enya muttered to Yuri as the laughter and chatter went on.
"You and Theo are so stubborn," laughed Yuri. "We don't want one right now. But one day . . ." She smiled and closed her paw over Enya's. "Don't you want a little one to call our own? A family?"
Enya's long lashes blinked and she shook her head, "No."
Yuri laughed.
Enya's blue eyes softened. "But for you . . . I'd do anything, Yuri." She speared a bit of fish on her fork and fed Yuri lovingly.
Yuri took the morsel carefully in her teeth and slid it off the fork. She chewed, her happy eyes locked to Enya's. They smiled at each other and pecked on the lips.
"Ew!" LiAnh cried, pointing at them.
More laughter.
"You and Zane remember to pick up the rings?" Enya wondered.
Yuri stared off. "Shit!"
"Shit!" LiAnh repeated.
More laughter around the table, Lynny's hearty chuckling the very loudest.
"Yuri!" Lea cried, appalled.
Yuri's ears flattened. "Sorry . . ." she said as the laughter continued. She glanced at Enya. "I've been hanging around Kuza too much. I'm sorry about the rings, baby." She sighed. "It's been a long day."
Enya hooked her finger in Yuri's. "I'll help you unwind later," she said, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
Yuri knew what Enya meant and she was mortified: Enya's family was staying with them in their home. She hated the thought of making love to Enya while they were in the next room! But she reminded herself that she and Enya had touched each other any number of times during her visits to the summer village. She would lie in Enya's bed with her, and they would kiss and suck . . . caress and hold . . .
"Zaldon gave you your wedding gift early," Enya went on in an undertone. "Well, he gave me mine too. After you left with Zane, we had a talk. . . ." She smirked at her plate and speared more fish into her mouth.
Yuri didn't like the smug look on Enya's face. Before she could interrogate her lover, Nyssa asked her to pass the potatoes, then Mora dragged her into a long conversation about seasoning meat and how to do it properly. Yuri hated to cook and hated the conversation even more, but she knew that Zane wanted her to be friends with his wives, so she patiently endured it.
After supper, everyone went their separate ways. Lynny, Kel, Loryn, and Julyan sat around the fire downstairs, sharing the last dregs from the bottle of wine. Zaldon went up to bed while Aliona went in the kitchen with Kira and Idella, no doubt to fawn over what extravagance Julyan had to work with when cooking. Loryn and Kira would be staying in Zaldon's large home, as would Kel and Aliona, Lynny and Idella, Kilyan and his wives, Wynn, Inden, and little LiAnh - and Zane's family too.
Yuri smiled to see Lea carrying a sleeping LiAnh up to bed with Ohana, while Kilyan went after them with Wynn following behind, begging to stay up late with the adults.
"Five more minutes," Wynn whined.
"No minutes," Kilyan said patiently.
"Inden!" Wynn complained as they went up the stairs. "Help me out!"
Inden's wings fidgeted nervously. "Ten more minutes?" he said uncertainly.
Kilyan laughed. "Inden, you're terrible at this."
"I'm sorry, sir," Inden said humbly.
Kilyan laughed again.
Looking around the sitting room, Yuri noticed that Zane and his family had already gone up to bed. Sade and Amrosa had also already left with Roan and Theo, at whose home they were staying.
Enya's family, meanwhile, was gathered at the door and preparing to leave. They were going to stay at Yuri and Enya's home. Yuri sighed: all six of them. Well, seven now. Yaholo had begged Enya and Yuri to let Kuza stay at their home. Kuza would be out on the street otherwise. And given that it was kind of Yuri's fault . . . she had a hard time saying no.
". . . so I said 'that's not fish you smell!'" Hris was saying.
Keeno and Yzlo laughed loudly, but Zalia and Hye looked anything but amused. Yaholo was standing with Kuza, looking as if he wanted to sink into the floor.
"Dad," Yaholo moaned, rubbing his eyes, "please stop your crude jokes!"
Hris laughed and clapped his son on the shoulder. "Why, Yaholo? Am I embarrassing you in front of your boyfriend?"
"Leave them alone, Hris," Hye scolded, laughing when Yaholo and Kuza both turned a little red. Her arm was looped in Yzlo's and her long tan curls were loose behind the shoulders of her green shawl. She looked at Enya and Yuri. "Are we ready to go, girls?"
"Yeah, let's get a move on," Keeno added, wrapping an arm around Zalia. "I'm beat."
Zalia looked tired but happy. Yuri was glad to see her smile when their eyes connected. Enya told her at supper that her parents had been arguing.
"I should say goodnight to Zaldon," Yuri said guiltily to Enya. "I've been avoiding him all day . . ."
"Yes, you should," Enya agreed, folding her arms. A curl fell into her slanted blue eyes. "Honestly, I'd never avoid my father the way you avoid fighting with Zaldon! Just go up upstairs and have it out with him! You'll both feel much better." She smiled.
"She's right," Keeno added. "Enya always feels great after she yells at me."
Zalia rubbed Keeno's chest, and she and Hye laughed.
Yuri laughed too. "Alright. I'll be right back." She kissed Enya on the cheek.
"We'll be outside," Enya returned, rubbing Yuri's back as they parted.
Enya and her family filed out the door, and Yuri knew they would spend the next twenty or so minutes standing on the step, listening to more of Hris' crude jokes as Yaholo protested.
Yuri made her way to the second landing and could hear everyone getting settled in. Wynn was still protesting even as Kilyan and Ohana tucked her into bed.
"But I wanna sit in Grandpa's lap!" Wynn complained shrilly.
Yuri smiled, knowing that Kel was downstairs getting more inebriated.
"Hush now or you'll get no story," Ohana scolded on the other side of the door.
"I want Lea to tell it with you," Wynn protested.
"She's busy with LiAnh," Kilyan said. "Now settle down . . . or I'll never get to bed."
Ohana laughed.
Yuri could hear Lea humming and LiAnh's infant coos. LiAnh was breastfeeding. Yuri could hear him sucking gently as Lea continued to hum.
Yuri smiled and kept going. She could see the double doors that led to the balcony at the end of the hall. The bedroom Zaldon shared with Julyan was there, and directly across from it was the guestroom Roan had used while living with Zaldon the past year. On her way, she passed several more guestrooms, and she knew which one belonged to whom, for she had helped Julyan make all the beds in preparation for the family's arrival. She passed the room Loryn would share with Kira, and Lynny's room with Idella. She knew Kel and Aliona would be sleeping in Zaldon and Julyan's bed with them, so there was no guestroom for them. Zane's room came up and Yuri paused when she heard a moan.
Yuri stood very still in the shadowy corridor, her ears forward as she listened. The door was slightly ajar, and through the crack, she could see one of Zane's wives sleeping on the wide double bed. Mio and Zee were sleeping with her, tiny bundles snuggled in the sheets. Zee was gently sucking her big tit, hugging it as he nursed. Zane and the other wife, however, were acutely absent.
Yuri gently pushed the door open a little wider and froze. Zane was fucking his other wife against the wall. They were both facing it, and Zane was humping his wife so hard, her big tits were smashed. She fumbled to brace herself against the wall as she stood on one shapely leg: Zane had the other lifted and was fucking her deeply and slowly as he groped her tit. They were frowning with pleasure, and his wife was screaming softly. Zane shushed her, his muscular back flexing with each deep thrust. His ballsack was huge. Yuri could see it jiggling with his every move and shivered, inhaling the scent of it.
"Ah . . . ah . . ."
"Shh, Mora . . . shh . . ."
Mora bit her lip, and he gave her neck a deep slurp that made her giggle. It was then that he noticed Yuri. Their eyes locked. Yuri was going to back away from the door, but Zane smirked. He braced his paw against the wall, and hoisting his wife's leg higher, he fucked her harder, faster, deeper. She gasped shrilly and helplessly, whispering Zane's name, begging for it harder. Still looking at Yuri, Zane smiled as he obliged.
"Ah . . . ah . . . oh, Zane . . . oh god . . . so big . . . Fuck me! Fuck me!"
Yuri backed away, turned around, and hurried down the stairs with her straight mane streaming behind her. Her clit was on fire. She left the house as fast as she could, thinking with a burning heart that Zane had been trying to show her what she was missing. She was bisexual, but she could not have the best of both worlds. In choosing Enya, she had lost something with Zane. And he had taken the opportunity to show her what she had lost.
The bastard.
